This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of August, 1934, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [636], through Study Group #3 of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss Esther Wynne.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Miss [636], and Mildred Davis.]
The … Beauty Time of Reading Shoppe, … St., 10:45 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Virginia. (Body and enquiring mind, in regard to her work in the … Beauty Shoppe, and the change which she contemplates making. Questions as to her mental, material and spiritual well-being.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [636]; those relations, conditions and circumstances.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is the scalp treatment I am now giving to men to make the hair grow really good? (A) For certain characters of disorder, yes, this is really good. In any scalp treatment there enters so many factors that there is no one form of treatment that may be said to be perfect, for there are certain types of disorders that arise from gland disturbances in the physical body that take away the sources of the elements that produce a coat or the basis for the growth of hair. If the activities being used in the present (by [636]) were considered with a diet and with a gland treatment, they might be made near perfect. While in the immediate capacity as a treatment suggestions may be made in the matter of diet, no internal applications may be made. A diet that works with the glands of the thyroid and especially with the sweat glands of the body would be more efficient; hence when such a scalp treatment is given there should ever be the suggestion that at least two or three meals a week should consist of seafoods; no fried or very greasy diet at all, or no fried meats at all; skins of Irish potatoes rather than the pulp. Such a diet together with an application to the scalp or to the skin will be much more efficacious in growth of hair.
-
(Q) Where is the best location to start? (A) Any choice may be made, so that it is accessible and of an easy accessibility - of course is the better; just so it does not produce an overhead that is beyond the present or the immediate future returns for the activities. For, as it has often been said, when there is a better application or a better treatment it will be found by those seeking; or, as it has proverbially been given, a better mouse trap in the middle of the woods will lead all people eventually to its door. Hence, in making same, to be sure keep those channels open; that is, the correct type of advertising; which is the spending, as it were, on printers’ ink in such a manner that it is put before others; or by observation find those that are in need. Begin there. Of course, the word of mouth is the better way of advertising; but printers’ ink or papers are the more efficient.
-
(Q) Please give me a better and sure formula and the treatment for bald heads. (A) There has never been a better than the crude oil treatment. This would be given about two or three times each month, followed with a cleansing with a 20% solution of grain alcohol and then massaging White Vaseline into the scalp in such a manner as to leave the whole surface of the scalp not too greasy, but as sufficient into the scalp to produce the better application of whatever may be used. But this will grow hair on MOST bald heads, unless - as we have indicated - it is of the germ nature that has destroyed the bulbs that GROW hair. But this will prevent four-fifths of all types of disorder, and will be especially efficient with such a diet as outlined; and occasionally specific gland treatment. So, when there is the necessity, make association with a physician that will give a GLAND treatment; such as thyroid, adrenal and the like, or as will be found in forms of iodine, adrenaline, thyroid extract or liver extract. Of course, such an association may be made with a skin specialist or one that makes a specialty of such gland treatments. Parker [James R. Parker, M.D.] would be very well to make an association with in this connection.
-
(Q) Please give me a formula for a medicine to be taken internally to restore natural color to hair. (A) This would necessarily be put up under the direction of a pharmacist, unless it was formed into an organization for the manufacture of same; which would be a combination in these proportions, whether making two ounces or four hundred gallons:
To 4 ounces of Simple Syrup, add:
Lactated Pepsin…1 ounce, Black Snake Root Extract…1/4 ounce, Essence of Wild Ginseng…1/4 ounce, Atomidine…40 minims, Extract of Liver (preserved in alcohol, of course, or Armour’s Liver Extract)…1/2 ounce, Grain Alcohol…1/4 ounce.
The dosage of this would be half a teaspoonful three times each day, just after meals, for periods of ten days with five-day rest periods. This taken in such a manner over a period of several months will be effective to glands, to those secretions that will not only make a digestion that will be much improved in health but - with any good scalp treatment, especially such as we have indicated - it’ll turn graying hairs back to normal; or where it has been streaked even by various forms of dyes, it’s GROWTH will come normal.
-
(Q) Please give me a formula to improve and recondition the nails. (A) There is not much better than that already prepared by Cutex for the care of the nails, provided the glands (which are from the thyroids, of course) are producing the proper amount of secretions in the system. So, then, what you use to care for the hair will care for the nails also, you see; for they are the OUTGROWTH of the same secretions in the system. While there may be occasions when a person with very thin or brittle nails may have very excellent hair, it’s because such persons eat their own nails!
-
(Q) What am I best fitted to do? (A) Do that thou art doing!
-
(Q) For what did I come into the world plane at this time? (A) This should be approached from another approach, rather than from that associated with present activities in this particular line of endeavor. We will seek.
In the approach to same we find, in those records that have been made by the soul-entity of [636], that insomuch as others served the entity in those capacities that were for the endearing of the physical body to certain and specific offices during the French sojourn and again in the Egyptian, the entity or soul in the present seeks - by natural tend or bent - to know through experience that which is experienced by an entity, a soul, in such services to its fellow man.
Would that each soul, each body, each mind, would get the import of that, “As ye do it unto my brethren ye do it unto me.” The manner in which one denies or submits, gives expression of feelings or activities of any relationships to a fellow man, is that by which such ones IMPRESS, or imprint, or stamp that imprint upon their own souls as relations to Creative Energy, or God.
So, the judgement is to be as He has given: “Depart from me, I never knew you,” or “Come and rule with me. As thou hast been faithful over the few things, I will make thee ruler over many.”
We are through. [GD’s note: GC started with waking suggestion, then EC continued:]
To turn again to why such a formula as given would affect the body-functionings, as to change the outward activity of the functioning of glands in a body:
The Syrup, surely, is the carrier.
The Pepsin is active such that the ingredients given may be effective upon the basic influences within the body that would produce in the varied offices of the body those proper functionings to stimulate in the proper proportions the activities of the cuticle and the epidermis.
So the basis of not only the complexions of body would be changed as to be more in a healthful and thus in an activative force to beautifying of that which is to man his crown of strength and to woman her head of beauty; for to man hair in the head is as strength - to women is as beauty.
Then, the Essence of the Black Snake Root is an active principle with the lacteal ducts that make for secretions in the system that stimulate a capillary circulation;
Aided in same and purified through the Wild Ginseng Essence, that is - according to the ancients - the basis of the stimulation of life in its very essence in the body of man.
The Atomidine - that is activative in the glands, especially the thyroid, the adrenal and all the ductless activities through the atomic forces in iodine, the one basic force with potash - makes for a balance throughout the functionings of the body itself.
While the Extract of Liver with the preservatives, in the activities with the other portions of the body, become beautifiers. Hence, proportioned as indicated, are activative with a body - healthy; the nails, the cuticle, the epidermis, and the adorning of the beauty of the body BEAUTIFUL!
- We are through.

R1. 8/12/34 Report of Miss [636]‘s Dream* had sometime ago:
A beautiful white horse with gray mane, tail and four gray feet to the knees. This horse was a beautiful clean white with only a halter on. As I was standing by the side of a stream she appeared by my side and started to cross. As she went in the stream I saw it was a stream of mud instead of water. She disappeared entirely from sight and seemed to walk across on the bottom of the stream. When she arrived on the other side she had lost her halter but did not have a speck of mud on her. She turned and retraced her steps and on arriving on my side of the stream she had found her halter and was still clean and white. She then turned and crossed the stream as before and when she appeared on the opposite bank she had her halter on and was still beautiful clean and white. After viewing the plains ahead of her she turned and nickered to me to follow. I could not seem to cross the mud stream I was afraid to follow across the mud. She turned and called to me two or three times and as I didn’t follow her she raised her head sniffed the air and started on a lope across the plains to a distant range which seemed to be the Rocky Mountains. I stood and watched her out of sight loping across the plain with tail and mane flying in the wind.
8/12/34 Report of Miss [636]‘s Experience* had sometime ago:
I was boarding in a certain home for eight months, slept in a large guest chamber all the time except one month when a visiting preacher and wife was holding meetings in the community church, I gave my room up to them and took a smaller room. Well every month except the month I did not occupy the large room, something would disturb me. About the same time each month something would awaken me out of my sleep by a light touch the full length of my body. The last time I was nearly shaken out of my bed. I awoke bouncing up and down in the bed as tho a very heavy train was passing the house. But there was no train passing or heavy truck or vehicle of any kind. I was going back to sleep when I was brought back to full consciousness by the shaking. The third time I was fully awake when I was bounced up and down on the mattress. As I was very much frightened I could neither speak or get up. Finally using all my will power I sprang out of bed and pushed on the light and I was alone in the room. I let the light burn the rest of the night and for the two weeks longer that I remained there but was not bothered again… Was some one trying to get a message through to me or what was it?
- [GD’s note: Miss [636] turned in above dreams of 8/12/34 which had sometime during her studies as a member of A.R.E. Group #3. She intended to ask for the interpretation in the reading but didn’t get to it. She seemed pleased with the reading and said she hoped to get a Life Reading later.]

R3. 7/29/40 HLC’s letter to Miss [636] via Miss Esther Wynne:
“In going through our files I find a copy of the Reading by questions, given for you in 1934. We’d like to bring our records on the Readings up to date, so would appreciate your advising us if you have successfully followed any of the suggestions given in the Reading relative to various types of treatment for hair, etc.
“You may be interested to know that having just read the answer to your question regarding an internal medicine for gray hair, I have decided to give this an immediate trial, and shall be glad to advise you the results. I wonder if you went to the point of having this tried on a number of individuals, and what results were obtained. I do not believe it would be difficult to get a number of people to try this out and give us a report on it. In fact, it sounds like a very good general tonic medicine anyway.
“We’d like for you to know about the expansion program explained in the enclosed leaflet. We believe that every individual who has had the experience with this work will want to have a part in this program.
“Within the last few years we have lost track of you and cannot find your address in the directory. We are sending this in care of one of the Norfolk group, and hope she can locate you.”
Sincerely, Hugh Lynn Cayce, Manager HLC:GD
R4. 8/7/40 Miss [636]‘s letter to HLC: “Regarding my rdg. from your father in 1934. I have experimented with the medicine in question and some day hope to be able to do more with it.
“As for your putting it on the market, I think that is out of the question. That formula happens to be mine. I conceived the questions and your father answered them, and I paid him for them. [GD’s note: She paid
5 or10, I don’t remember which.] That makes them my property, and by rights I should have the only copy in existence, or as your father seems to think he has to have one for his files. It should be in a sealed file and not available to the public.“As for the expansion program leaflet, you forgot to enclose it so am still in the dark as to progress.
“If you like, we may be able to get together on my formula and be mutually benefitted. Until then, it is my formula and not available for the market.
“Hoping the classes are progressing nicely and everybody enjoying the best of health, I am” Yours truly, [636]
R5. 8/8/40 HLC ans’d her letter and she subsequently gave him permission to experiment with the [636] formula.
R6. 4/28/49 See 3062-1 Reports on using the “rejuvenating elixir” [636].
R7. 6/20/49 GD’s report in her READY FOR QUESTIONS class at the A.R.E. Congress: “I started using Elixir [636] on 11/11/48. At first I experienced a slight nausea, and a nagging headache about the middle of the course - each ten day period, for the first few months of treatment.
“Early in March, about four months later, I began to have heart palpitation and attributed it to the elixir (Atomidine in it). I stopped in the middle of a ten day course, left it off for about fifteen days, then started again - no bad effects until 6/2/49: I began to have a trembly, internal ‘vibratory’ feeling. Again I attributed it to the Atomidine
- again stopped in the middle of a ten day course of the elixir.
“There has been definitely more energy. My skin condition has become clearer, and comments have been made on how my hair is regaining the golden lights, etc., which it had before it started turning gray. I feel that the hair has STOPPED turning gray.”
