This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of July, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self through wife - Mrs. […], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER, and her sister, Mrs. [3173].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Arizona.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3077].
-
As we find, there are complex disturbances with this body. While these contribute a great deal one to the other, in the disturbances, we find that the application which have been made in part work against one condition while being of help to the other.
-
It would be better, we find, to use cobra venom to mitigate the pain, especially in this climate.
-
As for the necessity of the operation on eye, we find that this will later have to be a part of the experience, but the applications for the muscular contraction - or the arthritic tendencies - will aid in relieving those distresses for the head and neck, as well as the eye.
-
First, - we would begin taking Atomidine internally; one minim (drop) in half a glass of water each morning before any meal is taken, for five days.
-
Then take two minims each day for five days.
-
Take then FIVE minims each morning for five days.
-
THEN have an Epsom Salts Bath. Use at least twenty pounds of Epsom Salts in fifty gallons of water, having this as warm as the body can well stand. Massage the limbs and the spine, between the shoulders and over the hips, while in the bath.
-
This will apparently make the pain in arms more severe, the first time.
-
Rest from all the applications a few days - three days, to be exact.
-
Then begin again with the Atomidine, taking five drops each morning for five days.
-
When this has been taken for the five days, AGAIN have the Epsom Salts Bath in the same manner.
-
Following the second Epsom Bath, however, massage the body thoroughly with Peanut Oil. This should be rubbed into the body well, all the body will absorb. Begin with the toes, gradually massaging through the bursa of the feet, the heel, the ankle, through the calf of the leg, under the knee, the hips, the thighs, and especially across the sacral area and lower portion of the body. Also massage this thoroughly into the abdomen, so that there are the reactions from same in eliminations. After the Peanut Oil rub is begun, keep this up daily throughout the period of the treatments.
-
Use Agarol as an eliminant, - this will be well, provided it is not necessary for too great quantities to be taken. But the massage with the Peanut Oil should help the eliminations.
-
Wait five days after the second Epsom Bath before beginning the Atomidine.
-
Then take EIGHT drops each morning for five days.
-
Have then the third Epsom Salts Bath, followed with the Peanut Oil rub in the same manner.
-
And we should find most of the arthritis removed, provided those areas are kept massaged daily with the oil.
-
Do these.
-
And then when it is time for the measures for the eye and neck and head, we would give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Was the foci of infection ever found? If not, what was it? (A) This is from the infection forces in the organs of the pelvis.
-
(Q) Is Arizona the right place for his condition? If not, where should we go? (A) Arizona is very good, but it will be better to return to regular activities when this treatment is finished, for we find that this may be done - if these applications are persisted in.
-
(Q) Any advice regarding the diet? (A) Liquids and semi-liquids for the present, but include in same a great deal of wild game - as much as practical; beef juices and not the steak. These will be the better, with the regular vegetables that are beneficial. Do include in these a great deal of beet tops, and beets, as well as water cress in the diet.
-
(Q) How can nausea be overcome? (A) This will begin to be helped when we start the massage.
-
(Q) Does empirin compound hurt him? (A) As indicated, and as we find, the use of cobra venom will be better than the compound.
-
(Q) How often? (A) This will be required almost daily in the beginning, but should be given - and can only be given - by a physician understanding same.
-
(Q) Will exercise hurt him or cause a “flare-up” of arthritis? (A) Not after the second of the Epsom Salts Baths.
Do these things, and we will find improvements.
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/8/43 Wife’s letter: “It is then no indifference on our part that you have not heard from us ‘ere this. Rather let us say I wanted to give the treatment a start. Our first problem was to find a doctor sympathetic to what we proposed to do and willing to take the ‘case’ providing the treatment indicated was followed strictly to the letter. We found him in the person of a Dr. Bradbury - an osteopath as well as a [medical] Dr. and deeply interested in metaphysics. However in noting all you say concerning the cobra venom for which he prescribed to take the place of the empirin which we’ve used, we realize that a daily dosage of 1 c.c. was not sufficient to allay the pain enough to permit the shutting off of the empirin. On the 12th day he began a severe stomach or gas pains. Unable to get hold of the doctor (…a flood, and all lines were down) I increased the dosage of venom to 2 c.c.’s. I felt that unless empirin could be reduced to practically nothing, that doubtless the empirin in combine with the Atomidine was increasing the stomach discomfiture, although I had doubled the dose three days before I got hold of the doctor, I am glad to say he agreed with what I’d done and in giving him a plain saline solution (pt. water to teasp. of salt) to relief stomach pains. We were a little worried as on the 11th and 12th days his stools were black and oily and thought there had been a recurring ulcerous condition, or else the Atomidine taking effect. The doctor thought the latter. In order to get the tub bath of right size we had to drive to the … mineral baths. We used the 20 lbs. of Epsom Salts as indicated. This Wednesday we will go for the 2nd bath. All told the baths make a 56 mile trip. The first trip was a little hard on him but we came through all right.
We are not used to such sustained hot, humid weather, 100
- 115, for nearly 3 months and have not gotten the rest we should. There were pains in his knees after bath and in shoulders and neck the day following bath. For some time past, my husband has been mostly on a liquid fruit - custard diet, not wishing anything else as he either had nausea or eating produced the same. I note that this will disappear with the peanut oil rub. The masseur at the baths on the days we go will give the massage but on the days between it looks as if I will give them to him. I’d prefer an experienced person but I feel my intense love and interest will balance any lack of technical skill.
I see the treatment is for 36 days, ending 8/22nd. By your reading I note you will then give further instructions… We are pinning all our hopes on you. My beloved sister, [3173] is having a reading on 8/23rd, and I’m sure she will not object to sparing a little time the further instructions if you are filled with appointment… Dr. Harbridge, the eye man was here this morning. I longed to tell him what we’re doing but feel his skepticism, so refrained. He says he likes the color of my husband’s eyes today and that he thinks an operation should be tried in a couple of months. I’m hoping that by following your advice to the letter that you will have been the means of so improving not only his general condition but alleviating the eye condition that the Dr. will find a less serious operation to perform… One comment, no wild game is available. My husband has had the beef broth as you ordered. Beet tops are hard to get. Water cress not at all; besides he doesn’t like either and can’t eat any regular meal, hasn’t since Xmas. What to do? In every other way I’ve observed all you say to the letter… Since I doubled the dose of cobra venom, it has been only necessary to take 1 c.c. empirin in 24 hrs.
R2. 8/15/43 EC’s letter:
Mrs. […] …, Arizona
Dear Mrs. […]
Thanks for yours of the eighth. I appreciate very much your letting us hear from you and I do hope that you will keep up the good work and that you will soon see a real response and I believe the improvement in his general health will make an improvement in the diet. The experience has been in many cases that the first two or three sweat baths, where they are taking this atomidine and epsom salts bath, it seems to aggravate rather than help and in the third and fourth you see real results. We are trying to manage somehow to get in the appointment for the check-up. Let us know when it would be the right time and I will try to save it as close to that time as possible. Remember we are doing this to try to be of a help and not the money. This is, can be, contributed to the Association if one desires but if not we will not ask for it.
Do let us hear from you and I hope that we soon see real results.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R3. 8/19/43 Wife’s letter: “From the first reading, unless I misunderstood it, we have not a long treatment ahead of us. And yet we can go no further until we receive the further instructions as the treatment you indicated will be over by this Sunday… Once started we ought to know what to ‘do’ next. Dr. [H…] has again spoken of the eye operation and we want to do everything possible before that has to happen. Up to today, we would say that there seems to be a firming of the muscles. My husband can touch his face with his right hand, something he hasn’t done for a year. We are a little disappointed in the Cobra venom as it doesn’t hold too well. He has tried to cut out using any empirin but it has left him pretty painful. He has made no attempt to walk yet and his eyes are troubling him. He can’t see at all. He still has the nausea and most uncomfortable with abdominal pains. The Dr. says he has an abscessed tooth which should be pulled. We are worried over this as it is too hard on him and too difficult to get him in town to do this. What do you think? Please tell us what to do next. So far the peanut oil has not helped the elimination problem. Will it? Or are we too anxious? Arizona may be good for both of us but so far we don’t see it. We are completely worn out with the terrific heat and humidity plus loss of sleep at night. How long will it be best to stay here and will it be possible to live again in Penna or N.Y. or where do you think it will be best to be? Are you satisfied with our application of your treatments? When may we see the results you promised? How soon can he expect to walk? Can his eyes be fixed that he may see again? Is the Atomidine to be continued? How long, how much? Cobra venom? How long will we need to use this? We will have used six boxes @ $3.75 by this Monday. Should we continue to drive 56 miles to the mineral baths or can it be done at home? Our tub is small… Forgive me if I sound a little discouraged. When one is so tired it’s hard to think straight and see truly. All we can say is we believe in you and are pinning all our hopes on your help…”
R4. 9/10/43 Wife’s night letter: “There will be no eye operation until his condition is so improved that it will be beneficial. Our immediate concern is mobility. Joint, especially hands, very painful. Constant nausea and stomach pains. Eyes painful and troublesome between weakness and pains. Impossible to try walking. Can baths be taken in home though bath but too small. Now using two empirin one night and morning. Chief concern is to obtain sufficient benefit from your readings that an eye operation may not be necessary or at least have this condition so improved that the seriousness of operation will be lessened since you have indicated that strict adherence to your instructions are necessary to success. We are gratefully worried over this long interval. Please advise earliest convenience sparing no expense.”
R5. 9/10/43 EC’s wire: “Wire address and questions for Monday afternoon, the 13th.”
R6. 9/11/43 Wife’s night letter: “Address same as before… Will you give us advice concerning following: Where there has been little improvement after first treatment joints especially hands very painful as to make any attempt to walk impossible. Almost constant nausea and stomach ache. Eyes sensitive and painful, sees only light. Please suggest anything which will help vision. Cobra venom ineffective, why? …, Arizona climate difficult. Please indicate place as good or better. Doctor thinks tooth may be abscessed, is removal necessary? Can baths be taken at home? Tub too small for complete immersion. In what way have we failed to get much longed for results?”

Background
Background
B1. 5/2/43 Wife’s letter: “Sixteen years ago my husband was stricken with arthritis after an osteo-myditis [myelitis?] operation. From then on it has been a series of doctors - spas - recovery and relapses. Almost 2 yrs. ago, we thot he was on the road to recovery and after waiting those years we were married. As far as we know a tooth infection and subsequent extraction caused another flare-up affecting his eyes. Last fall the doctor advised coming out here from N.Y.C. The arthritis was supposed to be arrested and the eyes eventually would clear up were we to live here. Such has not been the case, and the eyesight has diminished to such an extent that the doctor here advises a two-way operation on the worst eye, holding out little encouragement, and indeed the possibility of losing the eye… It seems to me that in reading about you in Thomas Sugrue’s book my most urgent prayers have been answered… The wonderful work you are doing and have done must have something for us, too… I have always felt that our help must come from God, as every contact with a doctor has brot more complications and different diagnoses until we knew not which way to turn…”
B2. 6/15/43 Questions:
Was the foci of infection ever found? If not, what was it? Can his eyes be cured? Do you advise the operation in the fall, as the doctor says? If so, is Dr. Hasbridge alright? Is Arizona the right place for his condition? If not, where should we go? Please name any regime we should follow, be it dietary, treatments, etc. Does empirin compound hurt him? If so, what can he take safely to alleviate pain? Will exercise hurt him or cause a “flare-up” of arthritis? What should be done for the hands that are very painful? How can he get his muscles stronger? (When he sits in a chair it hurts him…he has no muscle tone.) How can nausea be overcome? (He hasn’t eaten any solids for 4 or 5 mos.) Will Agarol as a laxative hurt him? If so, what is best? Is it possible for him to be a producing member of society once more?
“The above are our most vital problems, Mr. Cayce. I wouldn’t ask all these, had this illness not been for so long a time, so many things tried, so much money spent and the need now for conserving all our finances as they are limited.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and may God give you the strength to continue your wonderful work.”
