This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 4th day of August, 1938, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. [585], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Eda Louise Johnson and Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading … St., 10:45 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Virginia. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes.
-
Now as we find, the changes that are indicated are rather acute - and are of rather serious natures.
-
Unless there is given those things, or applications made to meet the conditions, we find that some of the tissue will not be able to withstand the great temperature that is being experienced.
-
While this is nature’s method in attempting to eliminate poisons, this may also so use up especially the lymph and the emunctory circulation as to cause adhesions or lesions - or cells be destroyed, the blood cells themselves, through making a strain upon the circulatory forces as to destroy the efficiency of the assimilating system and through same destroy the blood cells themselves.
-
This is the effect of that character of fever - typhoid - as is indicated in the body.
-
Then, as we find, while there are not a great many ministrations in the present, these - as we would suggest - would supply the necessary forces in the body for building or keeping resistance in same:
-
First - over the abdomen - or from the lower portion of the lung clear to the caecum, or to the hip bone areas - we would use the Grape Poultice. Use this once a day until we have allayed the temperature. Let the Poultice remain on until it is warm or HOT. This is to assist - not only by the absorption - in supplying nourishment to the circulatory forces through the portion, but in giving strength to the body; as well as keeping the bodily forces in accord in the circulatory force.
-
At least once a day, massage gently with GRAIN Alcohol - along the whole length of the spine, from base of brain downward - and even around temple and face; and then down the spine even to the lower limbs and to the feet. Let this be gently given, but away from the head - over most of the body, and especially EACH side of the spinal column. This is to prevent too great a temperature, yet this must NOT be allayed too easily - or too quickly.
-
We would keep away from the body any solid foods WHATSOEVER! only use liquids; and include in these a little WEAKENED beef juice, see? this not too strong. Also the fresh grape juice may be taken as a part of the diet - the juice squeezed from fresh grapes, see? (not the same ones used for the Pack or Poultice, however!)
-
Let the body drink ALL the water it desires to drink, but let it be WARM - NOT cold water!
-
We would keep the eliminations with cool - not cold - enemas. This is to take the inflammation out of the system.
-
Every other day we would give a little Milk of Bismuth - not more than a quarter teaspoonful in a full glass of water. Stir this thoroughly into the glass of water, and it may be taken in at least three or four doses during the day, you see, if preferable to drinking it all at once - but stir it thoroughly each time before taking.
-
These as we find, with the care and nursing, are those things that may bring the better forces for the body. These as we find are the cares that should be taken.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should the Tonicine be given? [As recommended in 308-4.] (A) Not during these PERIODS! We DO NOT need anything to make a strain on the body!
-
(Q) Would Dr. C. B. Gifford, Medical Arts Bldg., Norfolk, Va., be proper dentist to remove the abnormally growing tooth, when this is done? (A) Let’s consider this after we are out of the woods with these conditions in the present! Don’t worry about these. This would be very well, if it gets to this.
-
(Q) Should the present doctor’s instructions be followed? (A) Well - choose between these!
-
(Q) Any other advice regarding this body at this time? (A) This - if we will do these - as we find offer the better conditions, see?
-
We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/11/38 Mother phoned further questions, saying “No temperature since Sat., but has a pulse of 50 - nurse says it should be between 72 and 84; it was 56 Sat. and is now - tonight - 50.”
R2. 8/12/38 See 308-6.
R3. 4/2/39 Mother [585]‘s report: “For two months prior to 308-5, my daughter had been acting as though she didn’t feel very well. She wouldn’t go out with the other children. Not very long before she was taken ill I had a dream warning me, but I didn’t pay very much attention to dreams at that time. It did worry me a little, and it wasn’t until after her illness that it came back to me very clearly. Had I realized what it meant before the illness (I’m glad I could not recall it), it probably would have been more than I could bear.
“She was taken ill on 8/3/38 and Mr. Cayce was not able to give me a reading until the next morning. Since I had to wait for the reading, and her temperature was 104, my husband insisted that we call a doctor. A nurse who was vacationing in the vicinity dropped in and immediately remarked that my daughter was very ill, that she could smell the fever, and she thought it was typhoid. She took the temperature and found it was 104. I explained to the nurse that I was going to get a reading from Mr. Cayce, and my husband [1538] said ‘If my child is as sick as that, I’m going to get a doctor.’ We called the doctor and he said it was either pus on the kidneys or typhoid, and he gave her two or three prescriptions. He took a blood test, and didn’t find any sign of typhoid and then said it was pus on the kidneys. We gave her the medicines prescribed through the night and the temperature went down, but she looked ghastly, and all through the night she kept going to the bathroom but could not have a b.m.
“The next morning after the reading HLC phoned it to me and told us it was typhoid, and I asked my daughter what she wanted to do, follow the reading or go by what the doctor suggested. She chose the reading. This was the first time my husband openly opposed Mr. Cayce or the readings, but we followed the reading, as chosen by my daughter. I kept all of the doctor’s medicine in sight, so that when he came each day he would say, ‘She is getting along fine - just keep up the treatment,’ but I was following what had been outlined in the reading.
“What really saved her life was the grape poultice, which brought her temperature down to - at first 101, but very gradually. She was too weak to raise her hands, and I never saw her so ill. About the third day she started crying, and begged me to please call Mr. Cayce - ‘Get me a reading - I don’t want to die!’ I didn’t want to get one too soon after the one just given, but I did call in for a check reading at that time.”
