GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane; giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: (In going back over dates from present - ” - ‘42 changes for the entity - ‘41 - ‘39 expectations - ‘30 anxieties - ‘21 changes ‘19 - ” etc. on back to birth date.)
-
Yes, we are given the records here of that entity now known as [3175]. In giving an interpretation of the records as we find them here, there is much to choose from. But these we choose with the desire and purpose that this be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better choose those purposes for which it entered this present sojourn.
-
Unusual in many ways are the records here. The faults we would minimize, the virtues we would magnify. It is well that this also be the policy of the entity in its relationships with conditions as well as with individuals in this experience.
-
These we find as a composite of the material experiences, combined or parallel with the sojourns of the entity during the interims between the earthly manifestations:
-
One that is very sensitive to slights; one that is very sensitive to compliments.
-
One that has those abilities of vision, especially in dreams. These portend oft to happenings. These are well to consider; yet do not depend too much upon them, unless self is balanced well in its ideal and in its purpose.
-
For, remember, the Infinite spoke oft to those He would warn, to those He would direct; and God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
-
Let them all be sacred, treat them so, but be sure also within the conscious self.
-
One that has innately an idea, and ideal, as to color schemes. Hence either as a dress designer or an interior decorator the entity in the present might apply self in those searches for an outlet of those abilities.
-
Then, these will oft bring that comment, that compliment to the entity, as to its choice, as to its neatness, as to its balance in its dress, and the ability for home building.
-
These are the composite of the material as well as the astrological sojourns of the entity.
-
From astrological aspects we find Venus, Neptune, Uranus, Mars, Saturn, as parts of the entity’s consciousness. Or, through those influences accredited to those dimensional experiences, there are the activities of the mental self in its relation to spiritual as well as material things; bringing into the experience, then:
-
In Venus, beauty in color, beauty in character, beauty in ability to bring into the experiences of others - through the mental as well as material - love, beauty, and real peace.
-
In Neptune we find the mystical; while in Uranus the extremes and the occult. Do not let these confuse thee. In Saturn we find the great changes that have been and will be a part of the entity’s experience in the activities in the earth.
-
Mars brings that abundance of energies, activities rather than anger. Anger, to the entity is a fearful state. Do not let that which ye fear come upon thee. Replace same rather with patience, constancy and - most of all - consistency. For, consistency is a gem which few souls acquire, in its interpretation or understanding in speech or in conversation with others.
-
As to the sojourns in the earth, not all of these may be indicated. With the cycles under which the entity has manifested, and as it is in the midst of a cycle, we will find more than the ordinary influences upon the entity in the present; owing to what may be called - in astrological parlance - the closeness of the entity’s entrance to a divided influence, or to the cusps.
-
These, however, are indicated rather in the experience of the entity under the variations; as in the combination of material experience and the astrological sojourns. For, in the entity, little difference is experienced, in the real consciousness of same. For, as has been experienced by the entity, one may live in a dream world, and one may be rudely awakened when dreams are asked to be made realities in a three-dimensional world.
-
Dream, yes - and hold to those counsels, those directions often found there, but keep thy head, keep thy feet.
-
Do not be misled by the confusion of an hour or of a circumstance. Know in whom, in what, ye believe. Know the author of thy faith. Know the author of thy confidences. Then apply those tenets that are truths in same.
-
For, there is a way that seemeth right, but the end is confusion. But in Him who is the light, there is no confusion. For He is the way, the truth, and the light; He has promised to meet thee in the Temple of thine own body. And as given, “I knock - if ye will but open, I will enter in.”
-
Entertain Him then oft in thy mind, in thy activity. For, the applications of His tenets are simple; yet in the world of reality oft become as mountains:
-
Patience, love, kindness, gentleness, long-suffering, brotherly love. There is no law against any of these. For they are the law of consistency in the search for peace. For they of themselves bring peace, and they are what He gave into the world with the offering of Himself to be the mediator between man and God.
-
Before this we find that the entity was in the land of the present nativity, in those periods when there was the establishing of what has come to be known by many as the “city of brotherly love.”
-
The entity was among those who contributed to the welfare of the young especially in dress and in decoration of the home.
-
In the experience the entity gained. For, then the entity had a career and then a home. In the present experience the entity may have a home and then a career. The entity gained, for its contribution to the welfare of the many was of a universal purpose or nature.
-
The name then was Mildred Phiffer.
-
Before that the entity was in the French land during those periods when there were questionings as to visions and the meanings of that lady who rose to power through its mystic powers.
-
The entity was in association, in attendance, with those of that household where the entity later known as Joan of Arc aided in the political, in the social, in every form of activity in the experience and yet suffered in those periods. The entity then was not a doubter, for the entity also experienced much that was a part of the experience of that entity.
-
The abilities to join in were denied the entity. This brought worry and questionings in the entity’s latter days through that experience.
-
Then in the name Marcella, the entity spiritually gained, materially would be questioned. But the abilities of the soul-entity’s sensitiveness arise much from the experiences of the entity through that particular period of sojourn in the earth.
-
The application of same in the present must be tempered with the material judgments of practicability as to the use of same in daily experience, but deny them not.
-
Before that the entity was in the Holy Land during those days when the Master walked in the earth, and among those peoples when there was the choosing of the disciples.
-
The entity was acquainted with the Master, being a sister of Peter’s wife’s mother. Thus the entity was acquainted with the first of the outward miracles of healing in that experience, and has looked for and may find in its own hands the abilities to heal others in His name. Not of self but in His name.
-
In the experience the entity ever remained through the period one of those of the holy women. The timidity, the backwardness, and yet the exaltation that may be the experience of many by merely being in the presence of the entity, arises from that sojourn.
-
For, as has been indicated all feel a variation, a difference, by the very presence of the entity in any company. This is not to be used other than as given; kindness, gentleness, patience, persistence and brotherly love. These are the fruits of the spirit. These ye then made manifest. These ye may again make manifest.
-
There, too, the entity made for much color, and it was this entity that prepared the robe of one piece for the Master.
-
The name then was Martha.
-
Before that was in the Egyptian land during those periods when there were the preparations for the activities from the Temple Beautiful, and especially in association with those that held for the establishing of homes as individual units.
-
The entity was close in activity with the Priest, as well as with many of those that held to that phase of man’s unfoldment during those periods of activity there.
-
Here again we find the abilities in the entity as the decorator of the home, as to the preparing of wearing apparel. As a purchasing agent, as a designer in such, the entity might easily apply self in the present.
-
Do not forget thy abilities to heal by the laying on of hands.
-
The name then was Art-El-Om.
-
As to the abilities in the present, that to which it may attain, and how:
-
First find self; know self’s relationship to thy ideal. Walk oft, talk oft with Him who is the way and the truth and the light.
-
In material applications of those things having to do either with interior decorating, or dress, or the managing of such departments, the entity may in the material world succeed.
-
There are many stories that the entity might one day write, if it would. Let this be later in life.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What is God’s plan for me in this incarnation? (A) Abilities are thine. These He will and does encourage. Use them in those directions to make, to bring, peace and joy to others also.
-
(Q) How and where can I best serve God and my fellow man? (A) In either of those directions, if there is the choice of those ideals - or ideas that may be made into ideals of activity.
-
(Q) What were my past associations with my late husband, [3021]? (A) In the experience before this brother and sister. In the Holy Land experience, husband and wife. In the Egyptian land, friendly enemies. The growth has been well. It will be again.
-
(Q) Would it be well for me to plan to marry again? (A) As has been indicated in the experience before this there was a career and then a home, in the present there may be a home and then a career. The home is the ideal of every soul, but will ye find peace in a home in the present? Not that these are at variance, but ye may help others to find a home when ye may never in this experience find the perfect one again.
-
(Q) What talents should I seek to develop? (A) As indicated.
-
(Q) Should I plan to enter the business world? If so, in what capacity? (A) These will be outlets - either of these for the entity, and ye will find peace, and BRING help to many.
Keep the faith. Keep that interest in thy close associations - be not overcome with longings, but apply love, patience and truth in thy experience, in the application of those things outlined.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 10/22/43 [3175]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Association for Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Realizing that you are probably buried under an avalanche of requests since your fame has been broadcasted by magazine and newspaper, I hesitate to ask you for another appointment for myself, but do so anyway, hoping you will grant my request and not think me too greedy for it.
How often I indulge in pleasant reminiscences of the short time I spent there and think of you all a bit nostalgically, wondering how each one of you are. Your work is so unusually interesting, helpful and fascinating that I am sure everyone connected with it finds great happiness in having a part of it.
A few days ago I had a letter from Millicent [Horton] telling me she has written the November bulletin and that the earlier ones written by her received much favorable comment. That certainly is fine. I am so glad she and Mary Ann [Woodard] like me well enough to write to me.
The career suggested by my Reading has not been given too much attention yet but I have accumulated some books pertaining to the work and have been doing some reading. After all…great oaks from tiny acorns grow…so, who can tell; I might amount to something if I live long enough.
Well, it is midnight now. I had planned an evening of letter writing by the fireside and was just in the middle of this one when guests came so the other letters must wait until another day.
Please give my warmest regards to all and may the God of peace make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever.
R2. 11/21/43 [3175]‘s letter:
The sun is shining, - so I am not really alone, for does not it’s rays also shine upon thousands of others even as they do upon me.
Thank you for the period set aside for me. Feb. 27th, you stated as the time but you did not say which year. Now I suppose it to be Feb. of 1945 and if so that will be fine for according to my ‘Date Book’ I have nothing planned for that afternoon. I want to use the period for a reading on one of my previous experiences on this earth as I would like readings on each one of them if possible.
Because I believe the work you are doing is a good work and because I would like to do a bit to help, I am enclosing a $100.00 bill for the Living Sponsorship with a prayer that it will be as a seed which will grow and be fruitful and multiply in power. I will continue to pray that your needs will be supplied and for ever increasing abundance for you. If you will pray with me for the abundance you desire, surely God will answer for has not the Christ said, “If two of you shall agree on anything you desire, “IT SHALL BE DONE.” Perhaps your Tuesday evening group would pray with us too, thus increasing the spiritual contact.
[…] [my dog] and I are now going for a walk and while out under the open sky, I shall be asking that sufficient strength and power be given you that you may be a real help to someone this afternoon.
My best wishes to you all for a truly happy Thanksgiving Day and for many days of giving happy thanks.
R3. 2/18/44 She submitted questions for her Physical Rdg. which EC gave on 4/13/44. See 3175-2.
R4. 6/17/44 EC gave her second Life reading, for which she was present and submitted these questions [See 3175-3]:
Ck. Life Rdg.
You will have before you the life existence in the earth plane of [3175], born September 21, 1900, in Manor Township, Lancaster County, Penna., and the earthly existence of this entity in Palestine, as Martha, a sister of Peter’s mother-in-law and one of the holy women. You will give a biographical life of the entity in that day and plane of earthly existence, from entrance - and how - into the earth’s plane, and the entity’s departure; giving the development or retarding points in such an existence. You will answer the questions, as I ask them, concerning the associations and urges from that period in the present.
- Describe in detail the robe.
- Did I make this especially for the Master, or did He just come to possess a robe I made? In other words, was I a maker of robes?
- What was the name of my husband at that time, who was also my husband in this life?
- Was I acquainted with Lucius; if so, how?
- What place did I occupy at the Crucifixion?
- In the meeting on the day of Pentecost?
- Did Martha have any children?
- (If so) are any associated with the entity today?
R5. 6/17/44 See 3175-3. Subsequent correspondence with EC and GD may be seen under 3175-3 Reports.
R6. 6/19/46 Personal report on Life Reading by Mrs. [3175] as told to Gina Cerminara on June 19, 1946:
[3175-1] Par. 5: “One sensitive to slights” [GD’s note: It IS true; several instances are indicated in personal letters.] - doesn’t know if this is true or not; feels she is often unaware of slights if they are intended.
“One sensitive to compliments” - well, like anybody else, says she likes compliments, but doesn’t let them ever give her a swelled head.
Par. 7: “Abilities in vision, especially in dreams” - has vivid dreams, which seem to be symbolic, and which come to mind during the day.
Par. 10: “Innately an idea as to color schemes” - yes, was always fussy about color combinations, even as a child; likes interior decorating in her own home; does all color schemes on covers of … magazine, of which she is editor.
Par. 11: “Neatness, balance in dress, ability for home building” - yes, this is true.
Par. 15: “In Neptune we find the mystical” - yes, interested in the mystical, especially since her husband’s death 3 years ago.
Par. 15: “In Saturn…sudden changes” - yes, there have been many sudden changes in her life; many times she has had to begin her life all over again.
Par. 16: “Mars brings abundance of energies - yes, she is energetic. “Anger to the entity is a fearful state” - yes, this is very, very true; she hates to be around anybody that is angry; ever since early childhood, has felt great fear of anger in other people; does not herself get angry.
Par. 26: “In the present experience the entity may have a home and then a career” - Yes, this actually happened. After the death of her husband in June 1943, she became editor of … or rather associate editor; reads all the manuscripts; though she had worked in an office before her marriage, it could hardly be called a career. This work however, would seem to be more of a career.
Par. 31: “Entity’s sensitiveness” - says she is sensitive where her intentions are misunderstood.
Par. 41: “As a purchasing agent” etc. - says that this has never appealed to her much, but that once she worked in the shoe dept. of the largest dept. store in … the buyer and head man trusted her taste and judgement and wanted her to become a buyer.
Par. 51-A: “In the experience before this brother and sister.” Says she was much struck by this because when she first met her husband she felt like a sister to him; she never had any brothers. Even after they were married she felt periods of what was more sisterly than wifely affection for him. Very happy marriage.
In what way the reading was helpful to her:
Says it’s hard for her to distinguish between the reading itself and the meeting with Mr. Cayce and all the other things learned in general through the contact. What she did learn was almost like opening a door to a room which had been locked and forgotten; it was like finding something that you once knew about and had forgotten.
It was as if her life had been incomplete before, but this made it complete.
Accepted and instantly believed in all the teachings of Mr. Cayce; though she isn’t gullible about believing everything. She felt Mr. Cayce’s sincerity and integrity.
The reading was given just after her husband had died, and she was at a loss to know what to do. The reading gave her the encouragement that she would be useful and have a career; thus it meant a great deal to her.
Additional: Has always liked children (previous life in Philadelphia supposed to have taught children).
In Palestine experience she was wife of Nicodemus; reading indicates that she was more of wife to him than chattel; he brought seamless robe to Master which she made. One of the last books she read to her husband before he died was “The Robe” which dealt with this very thing. She says she thought this was interesting, though as she read the book nothing registered particularly. The book “The Robe” describes the robe as being brown; the reading says it was pearl grey. Enjoyed the book very much.
Par. 2: “‘42 - changes” - her husband’s health was failing, his condition became serious in ‘42; “‘39 - expectations” at that time she thought she was going to have a child, but then she didn’t; “‘30 anxieties” - doesn’t know for sure what this refers to, thought this was at the time of her father’s death, and her favorite sister, who was her best friend, was quite ill at the same time; “‘21 - changes” - yes, there were definite changes which should would rather not tell of that happened in ‘21; very personal.
R7. 8/47 Mrs. [3175] married a professional writer, rather suddenly, and traveled with him collecting interesting and informative material for use in magazine articles and stories. This is especially interesting in light of the Life Reading’s reference to “sudden changes” from Saturn’s influence, and to the many stories she might one day write - later in life.
R8. 11/28/62 To this date Mrs. [3175] has remained an active, interested member of A.R.E.
R9. 9/64 Interview with Charles O. Rhoades, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma:
Mr. Rhoades: What impact has your reading had on your life?
Mrs. [3175]: I can’t explain what it feels like to have been told that I was a friend of Jesus. I have always felt very close to Jesus and having been told that I was there meant a great deal to me. I always felt that men should be held in high esteem ever since I was a little child. Next to God was man. I have always loved boys. This may have come from teaching boys, I don’t know. I always thought that if I could have only one child, I would like to have a boy. I always thought that being the mother of a man would be one of the greatest privileges a person could have. I never did have any children. it was because of my previous husband’s illness that I got to know Mr. Cayce and came to have a Life Reading. I have always considered my life to be a happy life, despite any hardships that might have come along. I accepted the reading from the moment that it was given. Since then, it seems as though I were almost living in another incarnation. Once you get to meet other people who think along the same lines, things are different. After my husband’s death, I edited a metaphysical magazine. I had to read and pass on manuscripts with this metaphysical magazine. I had not thought seriously of marrying again but I did think that if I did marry, I would try to marry some one who thought along the same lines that I did - so that maybe we could work together to help people. I got the reading at the time of my husband’s death and I was all alone. The reading helped me to bear his death. I felt radiant as a result of having had the reading. I realized there was something beyond the church’s teaching and this is what I had been looking for.
Later on in her testimony, Mrs. [3175] was asked by Mr. Rhoades if it were true that Mr. Cayce used her as a sort of leaning-post to help him when he gave readings. She clarified the matter by saying that, after Edgar Cayce had given her reading, he turned to her upon awaking and said: “You were a very great help to me when I gave the reading”. Later on he asked her to be present in the room when other readings were given for other people. When she asked him what he meant by saying that she was a help to him, he replied that she helped to to keep on the beam or something to that effect.
When she went home Mrs. [3175] tried to keep a period of silence and meditation during the times at which the readings were given. Mr. Cayce apparently knew when she was doing this because afterwards he wrote her letters saying so. During a physical reading that was given for herself, Mrs. [3175] was lying down in meditation at her home and tears came to her eyes for no apparent reason. In a letter which came shortly thereafter, Mr. Cayce asked her why she was crying. On another occasion, she was out walking and had knelt down, possibly at the gravestone of her husband, and in a letter which followed, Mr. Cayce said that this helped him to give a good reading. After Mr. Cayce passed on, Mrs. [3175] frequently felt pains in her wrist and every time she did so, she was always thinking of Mr. Cayce. She does not know whether there was any connection between the thinking and the pain.
Later Mrs. [3175] in the interview told about a dream which she had prior to Edgar Cayce’s death. She was sitting on a chair in a long corridor and Mrs. Cayce came out of a door from one side and went into the room across the hall but did not show any signs of recognition of her. Later she came out of the room and crossed back across the hall but left the room ajar. Mrs. [3175] could see Mr. Cayce lying in bed and so she went in. She saw that he was trying to say something to her but couldn’t and he turned his face to the wall. Upon awaking she said something was wrong and so she prayed for Mr. Cayce and then thought of writing to Virginia Beach. Thinking this would be too slow though, she decided to call but put off the call until nine o’clock so as not to disturb those who were taking care of Mr. Cayce. Just before she was able to place her call, the phone rang and it was a call from Western Union, a telegram informing her of Mr. Cayce’s death.

B1. 7/7/43 [3175]‘s letter [re husband’s death]:
[3021] and I had faith in you and your work as soon as we became acquainted with you through the book, “There is a River” while in the hospital in April and were so eager to get a Reading for him.
Even though his condition was extremely serious by the time you could give the Reading, our hopes were strengthened as we carefully followed instructions but we knew everything was in God’s hands and only if it were His will would [3021]‘s health be restored in any measure. He wanted to live but was ready and unafraid to die and I know from his life and death that he has entered a better life.
I know God’s will is always best and I am willing it should be done and wish to abide by it but am at such a loss to know what to do. Would you help me Mr. Cayce, by giving a Life Reading for me at your very earliest convenience? It seems so essential and so very important to me that I have this Reading, for I know not what to do or where to go until I do. Life seems so unbearably empty just now.
