GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: [After repeating suggestion in undertone - in attempting to make the location] Yes - high fence across the way. [3210] - these are very serious attacks. These conditions have reached those proportions where they will become more serious unless there may be applications that will enable the administrations to keep away from so many sedatives.
-
We find that these seizures, these convulsions, arise from definite lesions in the area about the lymph and emunctory pockets about the digestive system.
-
Apply, then, the Castor Oil Packs over the area about the lacteal ducts of the right side. This would include the whole liver area even to the caecum on the right side, extending to the navel center.
-
Do this at least an hour each day for five days. Use three to four thicknesses of flannel thoroughly soaked in warm Castor Oil. Using electric pad, low heat, to keep the Pack warm for one hour.
-
After removing the Pack, sponge off the area with a rather strong soda water. Then massage the same area gently, by a masseuse or an osteopath, or one well-trained in physiotherapy or neuropathic massage. Little should be applied to the spine in the beginning, but be careful that the connections from the sixth dorsal to the first cervical are in alignment. Test these by the radioclast, or the instrument usually used by the chiropractic profession to indicate position of segments. This is a very good instrument and should be used more often by other professions also that make mechanical adjustments.
-
After using the Packs five days, leave off, for five days then apply again for five days, and so on.
-
When the massage treatments are begun, begin the corrections also. But not other than just to keep the alignment in the area indicated.
-
Later, we will make corrections in the ninth dorsal, sacral and the plexus of the lower spine or coccyx - which shows decided change. Don’t make them, however, in the beginning.
-
Do these for at least ten weeks.
-
Be mindful of the diet. Keep away from sweets. Take quantities of foods carrying extra quantity of iodine; such as all kinds of shell fish or sea foods should be often in the diet. Vary as to their preparation so as not to become obnoxious to the body. But very seldom let any of the foods be fried. If some character of sea food could be taken once every day it would not be too much.
-
Do not re-enforce the diet as yet. But keep these applications for at least ten weeks and we will give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Have the continued convulsions brought about any material injury to his brain? (A) The giving of certain drugs brings more deterioration than the convulsions, as yet. Do these things, and in ten weeks we would give further instructions.
-
We are through for the present.

(9/12/43 GD’s note: See directions [which were enclosed] for preparing Castor Oil Packs.
We are making an appointment for a check physical reading, to give further instructions, on Sunday afternoon, November 21st, 3:30 to 4:30. Let us hear from you about a week before that date, giving us your questions and the exact address at which he will be.)
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/29/43 Father’s letter: ”…We received transcript of your reading of September 12th for our boy…and have been proceeding in his treatment as per your directions.
“There is one item in your reading that is not clear; Dr. Hardy, Osteopath and Chiropractor, has been giving the massages and adjustments. You stated in the reading to keep the connections from the 6th dorsal to the 1st cervical in alignment and that later ‘we will make corrections in the 9th dorsal, sacral and the plexus of the lower spine’. Dr. Hardy also found the right hip out of place and she wants to know if it will do any harm to line up the lower spine and hip sufficiently to enable her to keep the upper area (6th dorsal to 1st cervical) of the spine in adjustment, at this time…”
R2. 10/1/43 Father’s letter: ”…Enclosed please find check… for which send me three additional copies of the book ‘A Search For God’. We value this book very highly and are buying extra copies for our friends to read…”
R3. 10/6/43 EC’s reply: ”…Thank you for yours of the first. We are sending the three books, ‘A Search For God’ [Book I], under separate cover. I appreciate your interest in this and I trust that it will prove to be a very helpful experience for all of your friends who read it.
“I do hope the young man will improve…”
R4. 10/8/43 EC’s reply: ”…I regret not being able to answer yours of the 29th sooner, but I am sure Dr. Hardy will know just what is correct and when to make the adjustments. I should think that it would be necessary to line up the lower portion of the spine. When those in the 6th dorsal and 1st cervical have been adjusted, I hope that you will see results real soon.
“Thanking you…”
R5. 11/7/43 Father’s letter: ”…In Mr. Cayce’s Psychic Reading of the 12th day of September, 1943 for [3210] a further appointment was made for a check reading on Sunday afternoon, November 21st between the hours of 3:30 and 4:30.
“At the time Mr. Cayce gave the reading in September we were in …, N.C. This time the boy will be in our home at …, Fla. He will be in his bedroom located upstairs on the northwest corner of the house and our family group will be with him during the appointed period for prayer and meditation.
“When the first reading was given, we asked how the boy’s condition had been brought about, but this question was not answered; would it be possible to answer the question now? “We will be very anxious to know what condition or improvement is found now and to await further instructions. I presume, also, that another appointment will be made for the next check reading.
“I am enclosing check for $10.00; is this the correct amount to cover the check reading of November 21st?…”
R6. 11/18/43 EC’s reply by VW: ”…The appointment for [3210] is set for the afternoon of Sunday, November 21, 3:30 to 4:30 EWT. I hope we can get some of the questions that you say have not been answered. I do hope that you are finding some improvement, and that soon you will be lots better.
“Thanks a lot, and hoping to help…”
R7. 11/21/43 EC gave check reading 3210-2.
Background
Background
B1. 8/20/43 Father’s letter: ”…We read the story of your life “There Is A River”, by Thomas Sugrue this week and it encouraged us to write you for a diagnosis and your suggestions for a cure for our eleven-year-old boy [3210]. We were particularly interested in the chapter entitled ‘Epilepsy’ and the wonderful help you were able to offer to the Catholic priest who wrote you for help.
“[3210] has been having convulsions for ten years. He was born a normal baby and was very healthy until he was ten months’ old when he suffered his first attack. There is no history of epilepsy in our family and, while we have been unable to locate the source of his attacks (after many trips to good doctors and hospitals) we still believe there is a cure for his trouble. Brain examinations (by means of air and electro encephalograms) have failed to show a brain lesion and the supposition is that his trouble lies in the chemical make-up of his blood - possibly improper functioning of his glands and other body functions. Just where the trouble lies and how to go about correcting same, however, is still just as much a mystery as was the case ten years ago when we began our search that has carried us to more than seventy doctors.
“The boy’s attacks average about one per day and last approximately one minute; he can spell about thirty-five words and count but cannot make any progress in his learning. Our impression is that his brain is unimpaired and if a cure for his condition could be found, that he would be a very intelligent boy.
“The reading of your life story has given us new hope and we would greatly appreciate your being able to give our boy a reading. May we hear from you at your earliest convenience?…”
B2. 8/25/43 EC’s reply: ”…Thank you for your letter of the 20th. I do hope that we may be of a service. We are sending you under separate cover the booklet which tells about the work here, and also a paper on Epilepsy. This condition, I know, has always been something of a mystery to the medical profession. While not every case that has come to us has been cured, most of them have. In the daily paper (yesterday, I think) there is a story about a boy who has been decorated for his activity in Guadalcanal. You know, he couldn’t have been a pilot unless he had been cured of these spells. …Let us hope that it will cure the boy.
“We are many, many months ahead with appointments and it will be next Spring before we will get to your reading… Hoping to be of a real service…”
B3. 8/29/43 Father’s wire: ”…Association’s pamphlet mentions readings for emergency cases. Last spring our doctor said our boy might not live another year unless his convulsions stopped and his condition improved. Is this case sufficiently serious to warrant reading within ten days after joining Association? Could boy remain here for reading? Please wire collect…”
B4. 8/29/43 EC’s reply wire: ”…We may be able to get an appointment in thirty days but couldn’t promise it under that time.”
B5. 8/30/43 Father’s letter: ”…I wrote Mr. Edgar Cayce under date of August 20th regarding our boy’s condition and received his reply in his letter of August 25th. In his letter he stated that it would be some time before a date could be set for the boy’s reading, whereupon I wired him that I believe the boy’s condition is sufficiently critical to be classed as an emergency (see my wire of August 29th). Mr. Cayce thereupon wired me that the reading could not be set for the time requested in my telegram (10 days) but would require possibly thirty days before the reading could be given.
“Will you please set the date of the reading at the earliest possible time. Also, I have noted from the book ‘There Is A River’ as well as from the pamphlets that Mr. Cayce sent me, that many times he gives readings for a person where the person remains in his home. If this can be done in our boy’s case, it will help greatly because he is in bed a large share of the time and it is very difficult to bring him by train because he averages a convulsion per day. Just at this time he is having from two to three per day…” (enc. Membership, Check, and Application for Reading.)
B6. 9/3/43 EC’s reply: ”…I have yours of the 30th enclosing the application for membership and the request for the reading for your son [3210]. We will undertake this Sunday afternoon, the 12th. I hope you will give the exact address he will be at, and prepare a list of questions to have asked at the reading. It is not necessary that the child be here. If at all possible, without too much expense, it would be nice if you could be here, but it is not absolutely necessary.
“Keep the hour in prayer and meditation. This is on a Sunday and we are giving up our time for rest where we think we can be of help for you. Hoping to be of a real service…”
B7. 9/6/43 Father’s letter: ”…Your letter of 9/3 was received this morning and we certainly thank you for making it possible for us to have a reading for our boy on Sunday afternoon, September 12th - which is considerably earlier than we dared hope for. We can assure you, however, of our deep appreciation of the personal sacrifice that you are making in arranging this early date for the reading.
“You did not mention the hour on Sunday afternoon but in the book on your life the hour for afternoon readings is given as 3 P.M. We will therefore assemble our family in [3210]‘s room for prayer and meditation on Sunday afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 o’clock; if there is any change in the time that you wish to make, please wire me at my expense. Our home is located on the Northwest corner of … Road, …, North Carolina. Our family, consisting of [3210] and mother, father, sister, and older brother, will assemble in [3210]‘s bedroom, which is a downstairs bedroom in our home, at the appointed hour.
“The list of questions that we would like answered, if possible, are as follows…”
Questions submitted in addition to those at the end of 3210-1: 1. Can this condition be materially improved or cured? 2. What treatment should be used to better the boy’s condition or to bring about a cure? 3. Have the continued convulsions brought about any material injury to his brain? 4. If a prescribed diet plays an important part in the cure, please be as specific as possible in naming the diet list. 5. If a treatment is prescribed, shall we continue to use his present medicines consisting of sedatives (Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Bromides) Calcium Phosphate, Glandular extracts (Pituitary and Adrenal Glands) and Vitamins? 6. If there is a deficiency in the blood stream that courses through the brain, is it possible to name what this deficiency is and how the deficiency can be remedied? 7. The boy’s sexual organs have been overactive for almost a year now, resulting in frequent erections; can any recommendations be given to improve this condition? 8. The boy is tall for his age (11 years) and as he continues to grow, his ankles turn in - indicating weakness and lack of control; can this condition be improved? 9. If osteopathic treatments are prescribed for any dislocations for the spine, and the Osteopaths that we have used in …, N.C. and …, Fla. (where we live during the winter) should fail to bring about the necessary corrections, is it possible to name an Osteopath who can produce the required results?
“Trusting that I have supplied you with the information that you asked for and assuring you of our complete cooperation and belief in the wonderful work that you have been privileged to carry on for so many years…”
