This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 12th day of October, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3280], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [3347], through the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
Time of Reading 11:05 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, La.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - we have the body here.
-
As we find, there are many disturbing factors, but these primarily arise from the one source - that of incoordination between the sympathetic nervous system and the central nervous system and circulation.
-
These cause, then, these disturbances. And it will be necessary, if there will be the corrections, that some of the habits be changed by this body.
-
There must never be any carbonated waters, strong drinks; though light wine may be taken occasionally, no hops, no strong drink of any kind.
-
These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body: In the blood supply there are burrs, where there is the lack of the elimination of the poisons from the system. And these in the circulation cause, in portions of the lungs, the liver, the kidneys, a combative influence between each circulation. Thus at times there is a neuritic reaction in varied portions of the body; especially in the extremities at times. Then there is the upsetting of the digestive system, dizziness in the head, bad taste in the mouth, a great deal of trouble at times through the prolapsus in the lower portion of the colon, and a rectal disturbance at times.
-
All of these are from this incoordination between lymph (or sympathetic system) and the central nervous system.
-
Here we find it will be necessary first for the purifying of the body forces.
-
Begin taking each morning before breakfast a heaping teaspoonful of Eno Salts in a full glass of water. Do this for at least a week.
-
After each meal for at least a week, take a half a teaspoonful of Milk of Bismuth with ten drops of Elixir of Lactated Pepsin stirred in half a glass of water. Take this especially after the noon and the evening meals.
-
Then, after that period of cleansing, begin with hydrotherapy treatments. These should include dry heat cabinet sweats, followed with a heavy massage. Sitz baths should also be included. These treatments we would have twice a week until eight or ten have been taken, and then they may be taken twice a month for a while and then once a month.
-
Morning and evening take the exercises of standing erect and touching the floor or bending forward.
-
After the first eight or ten hydrotherapy treatments (not before) begin adding to the body every other day vitamins A and D and the B complex. Take the A and D of morning and the B complex of evening. Take these for at least a month. Then leave off.
-
Then begin taking Kaldak once each day with a glass of milk.
-
These do, and we will bring much better conditions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What is condition of antrums, nose and teeth? What causes present constant flow of catarrh into throat and bronchial tubes, and how can same be cured. Are eyes affected to any way by this catarrh, and is the inflamed and red condition of the eyelids due to it? (A) These conditions are the result of poor circulation, especially that between lymph (or the sympathetic) and central circulation. The purifying of the body, though, will clear these conditions.
-
(Q) Is it true that I have duodenal ulcer, as some doctors have said? Or is it merely the cardiospasm condition? (A) We do not find a duodenal ulcer. We find pressures from the condition through the intestinal tract, that are sympathetic reactions.
-
(Q) What is condition of esophagus, stomach and colon? (A) Needing purifying as has been indicated.
-
(Q) What is condition of lungs and heart? (A) Only sympathetic, they are not organically affected.
-
(Q) Also what is cause of bluish color of lips in past three years? (A) Poor circulation.
-
(Q) Are kidneys and bladder in good condition, and other internal organs? Is pain at back due to kidneys? (A) When better circulation is established, after purifying the body, much of these conditions will be relieved.
-
(Q) What is cause of intermittent nervous upsets and fits of high tension with trembling or fluttering sensation in thighs, behind knees, and in soles of feet? (A) The very condition we have described, this incoordination, or controlling the emotions of the body and the physical reaction through the central nerve and blood supply.
But if we will do these things that have been suggested, in the order suggested, we will have near to normal forces for this body.
- We are through with this Reading.

R1. 10/25/43 [3280]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I am indeed grateful to you for the Reading which reached me here in … as my departure on leave has been delayed. I have gone over it carefully, and agree that it seems to fit the situation perfectly and to account for all the many and apparently unconnected little physical troubles which have been plaguing me.
It is at any rate a great relief to know that there is no organic trouble and nothing other than a toxic condition and lack of nerve co-ordination, all of which can be handled. I shall have my short holiday and then begin treatments, letting you know whom I select for the hydrotherapy side (though I learn that it may be difficult to find anyone to handle this properly in New Orleans).
Once again, please accept my sincere and heartfelt thanks.
Very truly yours, [3280]
Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia
P.S. I notice that on the reading, you give the address as …, but presume that here it merely indicates my MAILING address and that you located and diagnosed me at my home address, …, as requested. Certainly the diagnosis does not look as though there can have been confusion with anyone else.
P.P.S. I enclose postage refund in respect of air mail special delivery letter. Sorry I did not enclose same earlier.
R2. 12/14/43 [3280]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment VIRGINIA BEACH, VA
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Miss [3358] [See 3358-1] and I have commenced the prescribed treatments with a local osteopath who seems to be well equipped for this work and to be very desirous of co-operating with you. This is Dr. John P. Kilb, 1151 Canal Building, New Orleans. This gentleman was greatly impressed by your diagnosis for Miss [3358], especially with regard to the desired osteopathic corrections, and he has asked me to give you his name and address and to assure you that he will be very glad to co-operate with the Association in the handling of any cases which may come his way. I have given him the book “There is a River” to read, and he seems entirely unprejudiced, indeed I should say favourable, to the idea of clairvoyant and psychic diagnosis.
We assume therefore that his equipment is the right kind. For Miss [3358] he is giving a cabinet sweat which seems to comply with the instructions, but if there is any danger of our being wrong on this we would be grateful for directions as to the proper kind of apparatus. In my case he is giving an “ultra-short wave,” deep heat machine, which produces a powerful perspiratory effect.
The main thing however is that Dr. Kilb seems ready to follow the directions carefully, without wanting to insist on his own interpretations, as so often happens.
With regard to your reading of myself, there are three questions which I would still like to ask. Firstly, is the cleansing with Eno Salt, Bismuth and Lactated Pepsin to END COMPLETELY when the hydrotherapy begins, and secondly, as the prolapsus of lower colon seems an important item, is there any other treatment which should be given to correct this, or will your indications as given in the Reading fully suffice? The reason for my asking this is that I gained immense benefit from the week of cleansing, and now that I have ceased, on commencement of the hydrotherapy, it still seems too soon for the colon to begin to work normally and I feel some signs of getting sluggish again.
Thirdly, are there any specially indicated “brands” or makes of vitamins, or are they all more or less equal quality for the purpose?
R3. 12/18/43 EC’s letter:
Mr. [3280] …, La.
Dear Mr. [3280]
Thanks very much for yours of the 14th, in which you gave me the address of the Doctor who is taking care of you and Miss [3358]. I feel very sure that if he has read the book, and is acquainted with the work, and with any of those in his profession who have studied the work here for a great number of years, you will have no trouble with his following directions as the suggestions indicated. It sounds very much as if Miss [3358] is being given the proper treatments. Of course the Doctor can judge this better than I. Very soon we will have a checkup, and of course this will be a check on the Doctor also, as the information is no respecter of persons.
Yes, Mr. [3280], I understand from your reading the first application is to cleanse the system. Then the hydrotherapy is to correct and finish the cleansing of the system. You see the hydrotherapy cleans the colon entirely, that is high colonics, at least, and with the treatments the Doctor gives you along the spine this will gradually correct the prolapsus. This may require, of course, two or three series; the osteopathic treatments made from the ninth dorsal down during that period. Very recently, Mr. [3280], the information suggests that there is a combination of ingredients called Kal-Dak. Now it doesn’t give this in every case, for we have had it indicated for different individuals many of the others that are on the market, such as Vitamin plus, B1, Stems, A & D., but as the information suggested, Kal-Dak will be a more universal combination of the Vitamins. You can get this from the Lanworth Co., Lansing Michigan.
Thanks for your referral to our little plea for help. I am sure you will do just as you feel that you are able. Wishing you the merriest Christmas possible, and with every other good wish, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R4. 12/27/43 [3280]‘s letter to EC:
I have to acknowledge with many thanks your two letters in reply to my enquiries regarding (1) treatment, and (2) publications of the Society.
I know you must be terribly busy, and I hate to trouble you again in this way, but the fact is that your reply about my treatment has NOT cleared up my uncertainty, but in fact made it a little worse.
You see, in the original Reading, you prescribed for my “hydrotherapy treatments, including dry heat cabinet sweats followed by sitzbad [sitz bath]”. There was no mention of colonic irrigation.
In your letter of the 18th. you now say “the hydrotherapy cleans the colon entirely, that is, high colonics at least…” from which I take it that my treatments are to include colonic irrigation after all!
But so far, I have had none, as the first Reading did not appear to indicate it (unless the word “hydrotherapy” INCLUDES colonic irrigation??). I took this to mean that probably the condition of prolapsed colon was the reason why you had not advised colonics for me.
The other question is, what exactly does the phrase “dry heat cabinet sweat” mean? What Dr. Kilb is giving me is ultra-short wave DIATHERMY - not inside a cabinet, but on a couch, under a diathermy machine. Does this answer the requirement, or are we on the wrong track?
All this must be a terrible nuisance for you, but you will appreciate the fact that we and the doctor are most anxious to follow your advice to the letter, and we want to be sure that we are doing right.
[3280]
R5. 12/31/43 EC’s letter:
Dear Mr. [3280]:
I have yours of December 27. I am sorry that my letter confused you, rather than clarified the suggestions.
The hydrotherapy practically in everyone includes, unless it is made specific that it is not to be used, colonic irrigation. This I think, under the hands of a good hydrotherapist, is one of the best ways of preventing a prolapsus, but I am sure your doctor should be able to advise you respecting this.
The cabinet sweat and the dry heat is not the diathermy or short wave at all, but in the cabinet in which the heat from the lights in cabinet works directly with the perspiratory system, or produces a sweat and, from your reading, I would think that this would be possibly better for you than the diathermy, though here, too, of course, your physician might know of course, better than we. I believe you will find this most beneficial.
Know we appreciate your writing us. I just hope we don’t get things mixed up for you so you don’t get as good results from the suggestions as you should have had.
Thanking you again, and hoping you will write us and ask any questions that would have to do with your getting better results from the suggestions made, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC/vw]
R6. 1/10/44 [3280]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Very many thanks indeed for your recent letter giving clarification as to my reading. I note that colonic irrigation IS indicated and am acting accordingly with the doctor. (Actually, I do find that my colon is in such a spastic and nervous condition that too much attention of this kind definitely upsets me, but anyhow, I think that if I had the colonic treatment at every other visit it should be adequate.)
However, point of this letter was not to discuss my own troubles, which are anyhow very minor, and clearing up fast through your kind help. I have already sent one or two other people to you, and as your aim is to HELP I know that I am doing the right thing.
Now I have another case, also known to me personally. This is a young lady named Miss […] living at … She has read your story in the book “There is a River” and believes that surely you can and will help her. The physical condition is said to be MOST SERIOUS - in fact I believe she has had as grave a medical report as anyone could have.
As time presses, and you are heavily booked ahead, I promised to write to you on her behalf. She will write to you also, and I am suggesting that she ask you whether a Physical Reading can be arranged.
This person, although brought up in rather materialistic background and much associated with doctors (she is herself a nurse to a local doctor) has some understanding of the higher values and is herself clairvoyant of late, (although the latter factor is most disturbing as it appears related to her very serious physical trouble). In brief, I think she would understand and would be ready to act on any advice given her from psychic sources.
With all best wishes,
Yours very truly, [3280]
Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment, Virginia Beach, Va.
R7. 1/31/44 [3280]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
This letter is on behalf of Miss [3358] as well as myself.
We are particularly anxious to know what exactly are the regulations and conditions governing “check readings”, concerning which neither of us is very clear.
The matter is important only because of the very heavy cost of the treatment which we are both receiving. Naturally we are both going to take same for the periods indicated in the Readings, despite cost, but in the meantime we were thinking that we would like to have some clearer idea about the circumstances under which “checks” are available.
Do appointments for such check-readings have to be made far in advance, just as is done with ordinary FIRST readings, or are the “checks” made very briefly and separately by you without being included in the waiting list.
It is important for us to know this for, as you will appreciate, one is always a little worried about the effectiveness of treatment when the latter is so very expensive, for it might happen that a person could devote a terrible amount of time and money and then still find that there is something wrong. For, as you say, the check is the sure proof, and is no respecter of persons, and will therefore tell the patient whether he has found the right practitioner or not.
If “checks” are included in the usual waiting-list, I suppose both of us had better have our names put down. In the case of Miss [3358] it is of course clear that a long period of treatment is needed, but I think she is quite worried over the question whether it is being done properly. In my own case I must confess that I am a little anxious because there does not yet seem to be any evidence of improvement.
Please forgive me for troubling you. I know how busy you are, and feel ashamed to disturb you again.
Sincerely yours, [3280]
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
R8. 4/13/44 Questions:
SUBJECT: [3280]
TIME: 3.30—4.30 EWT, Sunday, April 23rd, 1944
QUESTIONS:
- Is improvement in condition of colon and elimination satisfactory? Much improvement seems to have taken place. Is condition in lower rectum and prolapse responding to treatment and Kal-Dak?
- What else can be done to calm down NERVOUS TENSION, which is at present really the only trouble, as otherwise I am feeling a lot better?
- Is present dosage of Kal-Dak adequate, or should any further vitamins be added?
- Is this nervous tension of PSYCHIC ORIGIN and is any kind of mental healing required?
- Is condition of circulation and lymph system responding to sweat-bath treatments now being taken?
- Is present sweat-bath treatment in accordance with what was prescribed in First Reading, or is some other kind of apparatus intended?
R9. 4/23/44 See 3280-2.
Background
Background
B1. 5/15/43 Request: PHYSICAL DIAGNOSIS covering general health, and with particular regard to (1) sinus condition, nasal swellings at night, and slight bronchitis of right lung. (2) Thyroid gland, and rest of endocrine system. (3) stomach and (4) kidneys.
LIFE READING. The writer would like to ask for as full a record as possible, especially for a hint as to whether a former personality-projection was lived out in the Orient, and whether he still has work to do in that part of the world, from which he has but recently come. He also asks whether the work which he is doing is indeed that best suited to him (he believes that it is) and whether he is correct in his intuitive feeling that the path for him is now curving upwards once more, with possibility of really useful work in this present life, despite much sin, now being gradually overcome.
Also, is the writer about to reach such a point on the course that MARRIAGE would impede his progress? He has a growing feeling that it would, and that for him it would be wiser, now that the Light has been seen so clearly, to devote all effort to pushing ahead now, so that he may as soon as possible be fit to be of service to his fellow men.
[3280]
B2. 10/2/43 QUESTIONS: 1. What is condition of antrums, nose, and teeth? What causes present constant flow of catarrh, dropping into throat from nose and thence into bronchial tubes and stomach? How can same be cured? 2. What is condition of esophagus, stomach and colon? What is pain felt on right side of back below shoulder blades. Is this gas? Is it true that esophagus is constricted by cardiospasm condition and if so, is this cause of the pain, or does pain arise from some other cause? Please indicate possible treatment. 3. Please confirm whether or not there is duodenal ulcer, as some doctors have said. Or is it merely the cardiospastic condition? 4. What is condition of lungs and heart? Is latter (as appears to be case) affected in some way, and if so, is it due to the cardiospasm? Is heart beat weakened in some way. Also what is cause of bluish color of lips in past three years? Is this due to a heart condition? Doctor has mentioned slight soft systolic murmur over apex, and says it is due to cardiospasm. 5. Are kidneys and bladder in good condition, and other internal organs. Is pain in back due to a condition of kidneys? 6. What is cause of intermittent nervous upsets and fits of tension with trembling, or fluttering, sensation in thighs, behind knees, and in soles of feet? Is this connected with cardiospasm, or is it due to a disturbed and overactive metabolism as claimed by local doctor, or is it result of nervous shock suffered during War in China. Please indicate causes and suitable treatment. 7. Are there any other focal points of disharmony to be observed, and are they physical, mental, or spiritual? 8. A tendency to rheumatism and stiff joints is noticed. Is this due to antrum and nose condition, or to some other cause. What counter-measures are indicated?
