This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 11th day of October, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [3282], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born October 17, 1900, in Morich, Person County, North Carolina. Time of Reading 10:50 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.C.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we are given the records here (and what a beautiful record!) of that entity now called [3282].

3. Here we have the record of an entity very few appreciate as to the abilities, or what the entity does and has done for those with whom the entity has come in contact. Yet, through the many years to come, all those portions of the land where this entity has labored and may labor, the world will be better for its efforts. And this can be said of very few.

4. The entity is one that invites confidences. Whether this is done consciously by the entity or not, many made the entity a confidant.

5. The entity is imposed upon by others. This is better than rejecting the responsibility, and yet it doesn’t appear to be fair from the material angle to the entity. But to the entity we would give:

6. Keep in that way that does not cause thy conscience to condemn thee. And though the way may be hard, deep in the soul there will ever be that pronouncement, “I have fought a good fight,” and henceforth there is laid up for thee a crown of righteousness in His name.

7. In analyzing this entity, its activities in the earth in the present, and the past sojourns, - from the astrological little would be wholly in keeping with that ordinarily termed astrological aspect.

8. For the entity has formed its own ideals, and it has remained true to them irrespective of what have been the personal desires. These have hurt at times. The way becomes long and hard.

9. Be thou faithful unto the end.

10. In the application of self, naught can be said as respecting that chosen. For these, as has been given, - never do that which would condemn thine own conscience.

11. As to the appearances in the earth, - these have been far in their ways of influence, yet many of these appear in the life of the entity itself.

12. Before this the entity was in the land of the present sojourn during the early settlings on the east coast, or, near Baltimore.

13. There the entity, while a servant in the household of those in authority, in the name Emma Bates, made itself so needful that all came to depend upon the entity; not only for the care from day to day in material things but also in the mental and spiritual.

14. This gave to the entity abilities as a teacher. Thus in the present, whether in teaching, in lecturing or is representing a large organization in presenting new goods of one character or another, the entity will make - as has been indicated - the success spiritually and mentally whether considered so by others from the material standpoint or not.

15. Before that the entity was in the Holy Land during those days when the Master walked in the earth, when the Master taught in Bethsaida.

16. There the entity, in the name Micah, was among the children blessed by the Master and among those that later became helpers in the church first established in Jerusalem, dissipated by the orders and by the persecutions when James was beheaded, when Philip and Stephen were stoned. All of these as martyrs were friends of the entity.

17. Thus the abilities as a nurse was an aid, as a helper for children, as one lending hand in every manner.

18. And those that may know the entity may indeed count themselves fortunate.

19. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land when there were those preparations for those that aided in the Temple of Sacrifice.

20. The entity was among the first of those chosen by the Priest for purification; and thus became that entity that aided all mothers in their activity that became a part of the service at the birth in that period.

21. Thus the confidant. Thus it behooves the entity to keep self well informed (as it is) upon every sort of a subject - the seed times, harvest, history, geography, nature - all of these become a part of the entity’s activity. Thus does the entity contribute a great amount of knowledge.

22. But DO write one book that will be of the hills of North Carolina; of the peoples, their problems, their hopes, their desires, their faith in the Christ, their contribution to the welfare of the earth in all of those channels. It will be a best seller. Write it in your own name.

23. As to the abilities of the entity, that to which it may attain and how:

24. Little may be said respecting these, except - keep the faith, keep Him, the Christ, as the guide, as the helper.

25. Put thy faith in Him.

26. Ready for questions.

27. (Q) Just what is my mission in life? (A) Few are filling it better. Make others better, that ye meet day by day. Do it in and to the glory and honor of the Christ principle.

28. (Q) Why am I restless, unsettled? (A) Not restless and unsettled in the inner self, but lack of response in the emotional body. Thus, keep self in accord. Ye chafe under duty, but do not that as would condemn self.

29. (Q) On just what one thing should I concentrate for greater perfection? (A) In the writing of this book.

30. (Q) How have I been associated in the past with my present brother, [3158], and what is my duty to him in the present? Or how may I best help him? (A) The experience in the Holy Land, when he was among those healed of the unclean spirit. Thus was thy attraction brought. Thus may it again be fulfilled; knowing that life, health, yea all one has is in the Christ-consciousness.

Thy duty? that thy conscience demands of thee.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I received the reading and your letter. I was interested in your statement to the effect that mine is an unusual reading. The reading was also most interesting. I was especially glad of the assurance that I have not piled up a lot of negative karma to be cancelled. As to the reconciliation of the law of karma and the law of grace, I can’t seem to get it straight. As I understand the law of grace one can by trusting in Christ avoid the consequences of a sin or in other words not have to suffer according to karmic law. If Jesus came, not to take away the Law how was it replaced by the Law of grace? I am not so sure I know what the law of grace is. However, the main thing I want to know is whether it is possible under any circumstances not to have to pay the price of sin according to karmic law. As I see it now, I am inclined to reject the doctrine of the vicarious atonement and accept the Spiritualist teaching that Jesus atoned for our sins only in so far as we accept his teaching and live in a way to avoid unpleasant results.

The statement in the reading concerning the attraction of [3158] and myself toward each other and the statement “thus might it be again,” gave me some little encouragement that my efforts to help him might not be in vain. However, I almost give up hope when I see him getting worse every day and get mighty discouraged. I wish I had some way of knowing whether what we are doing will avail anything or not. So far we can’t see any improvement. Instead, he is weaker now than possibly he has ever been. The evil spirits or whatever it is drives him more continually and he is less able to resist than ever, it seems. I wish I had his Life Reading. Perhaps it would give me a better understanding of his case. If I knew it would be of any practical value in solving our problem I would have one, but unless it would help in his recovery I don’t feel able to have it. We have been having the adjustments regularly except for missing one week when he was not able to go, but we had such bad luck getting started with the Appliance we have used it only three weeks. First, Mr. Godfrey was delayed in getting it to us. Then we couldn’t get water for a time. Then when I did get it fixed the nickle pole was no good and was eaten up, thus causing us to have to wait for new materials and start all over again. Sometimes I wondered if it were really intended and best for us to use it at all. I wish I had some way of knowing what effect it is having on him.

Concerning the injunction that I write a book of the N.C. Hills, it may be that I could and should, but at the present time I can’t see any way I could do it. In the first place, I don’t have any idea about how to go about it. In the second place I couldn’t do anything about it in my present circumstances if I did. As long as I have to see after [3158] and do my teaching and work at home I don’t have time to read much of what is already written, much less have time and opportunity for the concentration necessary for writing anything of any importance. It is hard to get a short newspaper article on a question of general interest done. I have too much interruption and confusion at any and all times. However, I have been told before that I could and should write. Maybe there is something to it. If so maybe sometime the opportunity and the inspiration will come. My cousin who teaches with me remarked that it was remarkable how well the reading applied to me and the apparent truth of the past history as told there judging from my present characteristics and the events of my present life and the fact that you knew nothing of my present situation, works or character. I wish it were possible to go back for several incarnations like the entity in “An Earth Dweller’s Return,” and to know more of these lives in detail.

You say you would like to know me personally. I’m afraid you might not find me such a very interesting person, but I am more or less different from the mass in many ways - always have been. I guess we would have at least that much in common, for we both know what that means so far as getting the greatest joy out of living is concerned. I find so few people who are interested in things that interest me or who agree with my views on many questions that it makes the going pretty lonely at times. As an example, take the question of whites associating with colored people. Personally, I had just as lief teach a colored child in school as a white one, all other things being equal. My fellow teachers, however, think that is terrible. Maybe they are right and I am wrong but I don’t see it that way. I don’t feel that Jesus would object to that and I feel that our attitude has got to change toward the colored race as well as many other things before we have the peace we preach about so much - not that I think that the races ought necessarily to mix, or anything of that kind, but I do think that our attitude in many ways must change.

I, too, would like to meet you. Maybe some day it will be so I can visit your place. By the way, there is a woman living in the same hotel in … that […]‘s doctor lives in that has had arthritis for some four years has, so the doctor says, got one of your books, biography I guess, and found a case history [951] so much like her own that she has started on the recommended treatment and plans to come to see you as soon as she can feel well enough to take the trip. Don’t believe I told you that Dr. Hardin [J. Ella Hardin, D.O.] treated Mrs. [1663] of … who came to you some years ago.

When will Vol II of Many Mansions be published, I wonder. I found this one very enlightening. Mr. Cayce once made a reading for me.
