This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of August, 1943, in accordance with request made by the sister, Miss [3282], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
Time of Reading 3:50 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.C. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here.
-
As we find, here we have a lesion in the brain centers. This causes not only these spells of lapse of control of the body but the inability for the body to control itself in an emotional manner.
-
This is a karmic condition. While the body might be benefited, it would require long, persistent and consistent effort on the part of some very loving, very careful individual.
-
These as we find are those conditions which disturb, through the inability of proper coordination between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal nervous centers. Hence oft the things the body would do seem apparently unable to reach the consciousness. Things the body in itself promises not to do, it does. The voluntary and involuntary reaction or impulse, as carried in the white and gray matter of the nervous systems tends in certain centers to run together and become confusing to the body.
-
We find that there should be regular periods of osteopathic coordination by gentle manipulations; not deep, in segment corrections, but stimulating the areas in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th cervicals, in the 3rd and 4th dorsals, and the areas where the patches of plasm between the active force of the lymph centers connect impulses by the sympathetic and cerebrospinal system.
-
These treatments we would have at least once each week until at least eighteen are taken before a rest period.
-
Then leave off the adjustments for a month and then begin again.
-
Throughout the whole period we would use each evening when ready to retire, for at least thirty minutes, the Wet Cell Appliance carrying Gold. The Gold solution would be in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold Sodium to each ounce of distilled water. Using at least three ounces.
-
The large plate, through which the Gold Solution passes vibrationally to the body would be attached to the umbilical center and lacteal duct plexus; that is, a hand’s breadth (including the thumb) from the navel center to the right and two fingers up from that point. The small copper plate would be attached to the 9th dorsal center. Take the connections out of the Solution when not being used. Connect to the Appliance about fifteen minutes before it is to be attached to the body.
-
Recharge the Appliance about every thirty days. For this body the Gold Solution would only need to be changed every thirty days.
-
Make these attachments each day consistently in the manner indicated. Polish the plates with emery paper each time before and after using.
-
When there is the beginning of the second series of osteopathic treatments, we would give further instructions. But keep up the Appliance with the Gold Solution throughout the whole period and through the rest period. We would give the instructions at the beginning of the rest period for adjustments.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/23/43 Sister’s letter: “I received the reading for [3158] which you sent me last week. I have ordered the appliance and started him on the adjustments. I note that the reading states that there MIGHT be a chance of him being benefitted. This sounds to me like the instructors have little hope. Do you understand this to be their feeling? I wish we had the money to obtain a Life Reading for him. Perhaps some things that we can’t understand would be cleared up and we could carry on to better advantage. When time comes for them to give further instructions on his case, will there be a charge for this? I notice that the time required for this reading was very short - only twenty minutes instead of an hour as I thought.
“I have misplaced the letter stating the time for my Life Reading. As I remember, it is set for Oct. 11 - 10:30 to 11:30. Is this correct? Hoping that [3158]‘s treatments may benefit him, and thanking you for your efforts in his behalf…”
R2. 9/2/43 EC’s letter to [3282]: “Replying to yours of the 23rd. My interpretation for the reading is that it depends upon his attempt to cooperate with what is done for him. Of course, just what someone is going to think and just what someone is going to do, and just how they are going to respond as changes come about, I do not know if anyone could know. We take the Book as a guide, for God Himself does not know what man is going to do or think. He knows the end of it, but that is different. No, when it comes time for the check-up in the course of 2 or 3 months, there will be no charge. You know it requires just as much of our strength and labor to go to sleep for 5 minutes as it does for 1 1/2 hrs. and it takes just as much strength out of me. However, you would understand it much better.
“The period for your life reading is for the morning of Oct. 11 from 10:30 to 11:30. I believe we have all of the data. If not, be sure and let us have it, which is full name given at birth, place of birth and date of birth.
“Thanking you, I am…”
R3. 10/1/43 Sister [3282]‘s letter: “In reply to your recent letter will say that I think you have all the information for my reading except perhaps the fact that I shall be at school that day instead of at home. I don’t know as that matters in my case, but in case this information is needed I shall be in … School about five miles, as the bird flies, more or less north of my home. I teach third grade.
“I enjoyed the bulletin received this week. I am glad you have decided to give some of the stories of individual experiences as recorded in your readings. It is most helpful in helping readers to more fully comprehend the significance of the readings as well as perhaps helping us to understand life in general better than we otherwise might. I am looking forward to my reading in the hope that it may help me to solve some of my problems, especially the problem of the relationship between [3158] and myself. His reading stated that his condition was Karmic. I am wondering if our situation is not something very much the same as the situation related in the bulletin, if there is not something we must work out together, perhaps, before either of us can have freedom, - for I am tied seemingly as surely as he is in a way. I am all that stands between him and the insane asylum. And in spite of the fact that I can hardly carry the burden I can’t get the consent of my mind to give up trying to help him as long as I can keep up and going, tho sometimes I get to the place where I can hardly make it. Then too, I get on his nerves sometimes to the extent that he says he can hardly bear it. Yet there is nothing we can do but stick together it seems. He seems driven to desperation by unseen forces and he in turn worries me almost to death, so to speak, not because he wishes to, but because he does not have strength of mind to control his thoughts and actions. I do sincerely hope that my reading will reveal the cause of our troubles and show us how to solve our problems speedily.
“How do you reconcile the Law of Karma with the teaching of the church that we can get forgiveness for and have our sins wiped out by repentance and faith?
“[3158] has been taking the Osteopathic treatments since we got the reading, but due to the delay in getting the appliance and in getting enough distilled water we have just recently got that fixed, so can’t tell yet what benefit it may be. Hope it helps. Not knowing anything about your type of work, naturally I didn’t know that it took as much strength for five minutes time as for a long period. I have wondered if this activity was as much or any more taxing on the body than other hard labor either physical or mental.
“If I understand correctly the use of the appliance is primarily for nerve stimulation for better metabolism and strengthening of the system. It seems that I need something of the kind and have been wondering if I might not be able to use it. Maybe with a different solution with benefit. What would you recommend? I am in a weak, nervous, rundown condition.
“Do you think a little variation in the time [3158] takes his osteopathic treatments each week will matter in the benefits to be had?”
R4. 10/11/43 See sister’s life reading 3282-1, Par. 30-A re. their past association in Palestine when he was healed of unclean spirit by Jesus.
R5. 10/20/43 EC’s letter to sister, Miss [3282]: “Thanks for yours of the first. I hope you have found your reading most interesting. Do take it out and read it over once in a while. Then put it away and try to forget it. Then after a few weeks read it again. Then if you think there are questions that I might help you with, write me about it. It is one of the most unusual we have had in the last forty years. Now I am anxious to know you personally.
“Yes, I reconcile the Law of Karma, for you know Jesus said He did not come to take away the Law, but to fulfill it and Karma is just law, cause and effect, but by taking away the law and making in its place the law of grace, we can live in that, as you ought to be able to tell people better than most anybody. Why we are at an at-onement with Him.
“I don’t know whether it would be well for you to undertake to use the appliance for yourself or not. Those things are so sensitive. By using an entirely different solution, you might be able to get a real help out of it. I think with your solution, I would use spirits of camphor and Atomidine. I don’t remember just what is used in your brother’s, but if you do this be sure to get the new bottles from Mr. Godfrey, and don’t use the same connection and the solution. That would mean that you would have to have at least one wire to use it yourself that had the large plate and connection to go in the solution.
“Thanking you for your letter and hoping to have been the means of a service for yourself and your brother…”
R6. 10/31/43 See sister [3282]‘s letter re. their karmic relationship, his use of Wet Cell Appliance, etc.
R7. 11/4/43 EC’s letter to sister: “I am sure from what you say and what I gathered from the reading of your brother, that you are praying a lot! I think if you could possibly arouse something in him and make him want to fight that this would be of help, and if you can’t, then there isn’t much chance, as he would have so much to battle against.
“So much anxiety, I am sure, is trying on you. But you evidently are an exception, an unusual person, and I do hope to have the opportunity of meeting you sometime in the near future.
“I believe most of the material was sent you, except ‘Essenes’ this is in press. We should be able to get it within the next three or four weeks.
“Won’t you write me again about that time, and remind me I owe you this booklet. Unless, of course, you would rather we return your money.
“Hoping you will be able to get a great deal out of your reading and that there is some help to be had for your brother, and thanking you, I am…”
R8. 12/7/43 Sister’s letter to EC: “Since [3158] has only 2 or 3 more adjustments to take, I guess it will soon be time for the check reading. When you make this reading I am hoping that you may be able to get answers to the following questions for me, as I am very desirous of knowing them if possible. Questions: 1. What is the karmic cause of his condition? 2. Is or was he possessed of evil spirits during this sickness as was suggested in my Life Reading when mention was made of his being afflicted thus in a former incarnation? and if so, how can he be freed? 3. He is very weak physically as well as mentally. This condition is often intensified by being in a reclining position. In a way he is rested by lying down, but in the meantime his mind and nerves seem to run down, so to speak, until he gets very weak & nervous & also weak mentally after lying in bed all night, especially in certain positions. He usually gains strength mentally & physically after being up for awhile, so that by afternoon & night he often feels pretty strong both ways. What can be done to remedy this condition? 4. Am I discharging my duty toward him as I should? If not, how may I do better? 5. He suffers much with cold feet at night. How get relief?
“[3158] seems improved some in that he is more settled & better able to control himself mentally, but he says he is weaker than he has ever been. He had to have his eye, which was hurt sometime ago, removed last week. That has been a great strain on him.
“Concerning your recent request for help in financing additional service in your work, will say that I should be glad to help, but have had so much expense that I don’t feel that I am able now. Hope you will get the necessary help to enlarge the work that it may be of increasing value to an increasing number of people.
“You told me to remind you that you owed me the booklet ‘Essenes’”.
R9. 12/17/43 EC’s letter to sister, Miss [3282]: “I have yours of the 7th, and request for appointment for the ck. reading for your brother, [3158]. Whether we can get this in any time real soon or not, is a real question.
“Will try to get this for you the morning of Feb. 1, 1944, 10:30 11:30 EWT. Be sure and let us know exactly where the young man will be during the hour, and make out a list of questions to be asked regarding his condition etc. We are enclosing the blank…”
R10. Sister’s reply: “I was indeed very much surprised and very, very disappointed to get the above [written on letter he sent] letter stating that you probably would not be able to give the check reading ‘til Feb. 1. I was so sure you would give it now as the Reading stated that instructions would be given at the beginning of the rest period for adjustments
- and also at the beginning of the second period of adjustments. I was hoping that we would get some further advice as to whether it is necessary to continue treatments or not. Especially since they don’t seem to be helping. Apparently his mind and body both gets weaker and weaker and he has also lost a great deal of weight. We have had so many delays and hindrances of one kind and another in following the instructions that I sometimes wonder if we should be taking the treatments - if, after all, some higher power isn’t trying to show us that it is unnecessary. I am wondering if we wouldn’t be seeing at least a little improvement if the treatments were benefiting him. I’m thankful to say that his attitude toward people, circumstances, his condition, etc. has changed for the better and he is trying harder to help himself, but he can’t do what he wants to do in overcoming his wrong thinking for lack of mental strength. I wish I could know what is best to do and have some assurance of what the outcome would be.
“In one of your letters you said there would be no charge for the check reading. However, I notice on the blank a charge of $10.00. Does that mean I have to send that? If so, I’ll send it later with my questions and statement concerning his whereabouts at the time of the Reading.
“I don’t know why you sent so many blanks. Don’t know as I need but one.”

Background
Background
B1. 5/2/43 Sister [3282]‘s letter: “He is 37 yrs. old [Born 3/7/06]. At about 13 yrs. he joined the Missionary Baptist Church. When he was baptized he was stricken with a headache which lasted for years. Along about the same time his mind went dim, as he calls it, much the same as a light being turned down. Since that time he has suffered more or less with fears and illusions of various kinds - part of the time not able to work at all for lack of mind & nerve strength
- part of the time doing light work & odd jobs that require little mental effort & responsibility…can’t do much learning books. Has had 2 breakdowns, being so tormented in mind that he was hysterical & could not control himself. The last being last year & from which he has only partially recovered. Some doctors say his weakness is a result of self-abuse or masturbation when a boy, others say no. Sometimes I think fear of hell in the next life is partly if not all the cause, & if there is such a thing as a person being possessed of evil spirits I’m almost persuaded that he must be. He is obsessed with the fear that he is not a Christian, that he will do wrong and go to hell when he dies. He gets the idea often that the most innocent & trivial things are wrong & is led to do the most silly things to cancel this wrong. And even when we persuade him & he can see the foolishness of it, many times, yet he hasn’t the strength to ignore the thoughts but is tormented until he straightens, as he calls it, by doing even the most uncalled for things. He is a firm believer in the orthodox interpretation of the Bible & any teaching I suggest that seems to conflict with that he won’t listen to because he thinks that is ‘just something’ I’ve read and is wrong. Sometimes I think if something or someone could prove to him that he was not in danger of hell fire, he would get well, which I don’t believe he is, but in the condition he is in his life is being almost, if not quite, wasted, it seems to me, which might put him in an unfavorable position in the next world. I’d give most anything to see him well & satisfied & able to lead a useful life, & also free us from responsibility for his care so we could serve ourselves & others better… He is afraid of saying something wrong. He often won’t express himself in answers to many questions, even as to what he believes, & if he does he is continually taking back what he says, as he calls it, even to the extent of imagining he may have said something wrong & saying he’ll take back anything he ought to, & is always asking us to forgive him any harm even when he has done & said nothing - just gets it in his mind he might have done wrong. Sometimes he gets on the fence, so to speak, one thought says do thus & so, another says don’t, and he is afraid to move either way & gets all nervous & hysterical, suffering terribly. Afraid to & afraid not to. I do sincerely hope & trust you can help us.
“He has never done anything the world would consider wicked.”
