This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of December, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3511], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. Contact: [5098].

Time of Reading In the church …, 3:35 to 3:50 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Florida.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3511].
-
As we find, while there are many conditions that are very good, there are disturbances of such natures that unless measures are taken for correction these may greatly limit the body’s activities.
-
These have to do primarily with the organs of the sensory system.
-
Quite interesting has been the life experience in other sojourns!
-
These conditions are partially a meeting of the own self, and thus may in the greater manner be assisted and corrected through the proper spiritual attitudes. For, who healeth all thy diseases?
-
It will require, then, that there be such an attitude in mind, in purpose, in hope, and in relationships to others, that each cell of the body may be attuned to the divine within. Each cell must become expectant, that there may be the renewing, the revivifying of the relationships that the soul-entity bears to Creative Forces.
-
It will not be better understood, for this entity, than by the interpreting of Exodus 19:5 in its own life, and then the whole of the 30th of Deuteronomy, and then especially the 15th of St. John.
-
To be sure there are pathological or physical conditions. For each soul meets itself in that phase of its experience in which the errors occurred that bring the results or effects in the present.
-
There has been considerable disturbance in the Eustachian tubes from a catarrhal condition, and a disturbance in the sinus and the antrums. These have so weakened physically that there is a prolapsus in the tube itself, and this necessitates physical correction.
-
But if the body-forces, the body-energies, are to receive the proper coordinating activity, we find that the body-thoughts and the body-mind and the body-expectancy must look to those sources from which there comes health, life, light and immortality.
-
In the physical, then, we find that these conditions should have the attention of an osteopathic specialist, one trained especially in finger surgery.
-
These measures taken, with the attitudes that should be an the consciousness of the entity, will bring help to the body.
-
There will be needed a period of preparation by the osteopath for this correction. And if through that period the body reaches that consciousness respecting Creative Forces, then we will find that responses will be sure and certain.
-
Do that.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Would it be well to continue taking thyroid and hydrochloric acid? (A) As we find we would leave this off and substitute the compound called KalDak, for this carries a better proportion of the vitamins minus in the body, as well as the body building forces of iron and phosphorous. For this body take a level teaspoonful twice each day, morning and evening, first dissolved in a very small quantity of hot water and then milk and cream added to fill the tumbler.
-
(Q) Is there either a vitamin or hormone deficiency? (A) There is at times, this will be supplied through the properties indicated. These vary considerably, you see; they change (the hormones).
-
(Q) Where shall I live in relation to best health? Is it God’s will that I stay where I am or go elsewhere? (A) Where the entity may serve the better. As the entity attempts to contribute to the testifying for and the working with those who have dedicated themselves to the service of God, through their relationships to their fellow men, there the entity may serve best. In the present environs we would stay at least until next fall when there are changes.
-
(Q) Is there any way in which I am failing to do the will of God that is a factor in my physical condition? (A) Let thy conscience be thy guide as ye read those verses pointed out to thee. Who made us a judge over thee? Let thy attitude ever be rather, “Not my will, but Thine O God, be done in and through me.”
In the activities of the entity in preparing itself for the administrations for the physical being, know that good comes only from the divine - no matter what may be applied, materially, physically, spiritually. Have ye not read that in Him ye live and move and have thy being? What are those elements in food or in drink that give growth or strength to the body? Vitamins? What are vitamins? The creative forces working with the body-energies for the renewing of the body! What speaketh of the spirit? My spirit beareth witness with thy spirit whether ye be the children of God or not.
When there are those physical deficiencies, the body is minus something, but who is to add that which will constitute a complete coordination. Man may only sow, man may only apply, but God giveth the increase, God giveth the healing.
- We are through with this reading.

From Dr. Muncie’s written report: DIAGNOSIS: “Otosclerosis caused primarily by prolapsed Eustachian tubes and secondarily by intranasal and sinus pathology. This is a progressive disease and results in degeneration of the auditory nerve endings in the cochlea and extreme deafness unless the active disease processes are checked through correcting the underlying causes.” PROGNOSIS: “Judging your case by similar cases successfully treated by my method and from satisfactory therapeutic tests made at the time of examination, partial restoration of hearing can be established. “I believe you will be interested to know that we are now in the process of preparing the readings for microfilming. The latter of this month we will have our second set of readings microfilmed and they will be available at Congress time in June.
“Your reading will be among the earlier readings to be done. For this reason we are especially grateful to have the report you gave us on the manner in which you followed the ‘physical treatment’ outlined in your reading.
“Perhaps you would like to comment on the other aspects of your reading. Did you find the spiritual suggestions and guidance helpful? Did you find the reference to reincarnation in your reading acceptable to your own way of thinking? If so, have you found the reference to karma ‘meeting of the own self’ and the deeper meanings involved in this thought, the answer to the ‘why’ of your physical problem? To what extent did you find the scriptures suggested, helpful? Would you say that your reading was (or is) a key for you to ‘peacefulness’ within? Has your reading, to any extent, pointed the way for you - toward more purposeful living?
“If you will be good enough to give us more detail on those items wherein you agree or DISAGREE with the information in your reading, it will prove most helpful in forming the setting for your reading.
“Your continued good thoughts and immediate reply shall indeed be appreciated.
“P.S. In 1950 we requested a report from Miss [5098] on the Life Reading given for her by Edgar Cayce. We did not receive a reply. Could you possibly tell us what her current address is? Thank you.”
R6. 11/6/52 [3511]‘s letter to Gladys Davis:
“My apoligies for being so long in answering your letter of last May. As you will note from my letter-head, my work has changed since then and I have been busily engaged in getting adjusted to my new assignment.
“Miss [5098]‘s address is now somewhere in ‘heaven.’ She died of an abdominal cancer after two operations and a prolonged illness. [She had a Life Reading only. GD]
“Concerning my own spiritual reading, I must in all honesty state that the suggestions and Biblical references were so general and vague that there has been very little help from them directly. I would add that indirectly I have been immensely helped and broadened in my outlook from my contacts with Mr. Cayce’s life and works. I regret his death makes impossible a spiritual reading.
“I would say that I have an increased and deepened sense of inner peace which has developed since the time of the reading. How much the two are related, I cannot say. I do not know that my living is ‘more purposeful’ because of the readings, but I am decidedly less concerned about temporal standards of success and I feel the readings have helped to solidify and make possible the living out of convictions already held on that score. As I have indicated, the hearing is gradually diminishing, but it is now no longer a matter of concern. The acceptance may involved what you refer to as a ‘meeting of the own self.’
“I hope that I have answered your inquiry in a helpful way. In any event, the pursuit of truth wherever it leads is life’s most thrilling adventure, even when it involves discovering the truth about oneself.”

Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Doctor:
As an individual who has had some interest in, or experience with, the information given by Edgar Cayce, we believe you will want to assist us in our efforts to evaluate the applicability of his clairvoyant readings.
As you know, we are confronted with the important task of working out a system for extracting and testing for general use the information in the readings which has for 40 years proved its worth in individual cases. We have devised, with the help of members of the Advisory Board of Physicians, a plan of abstracting the cases, synthesizing them, and sending you, in compact, readable form, the resume of a number of cases of some specific disease.
We feel that this service will be of value to you as a matter of intellectual interest and as a matter of practical value in your practice.
Here is a study of deafness.
If your experience with this disease has either confirmed or differed with these findings, please indicate it on the enclosed card and return it at once. (Another card will be forwarded for future use.)
If you put into practice some of the recommendations of the readings, and find them efficacious, you will not only have helped a suffering fellow-man, but you will also have demonstrated the validity of Edgar Cayce’s medical clairvoyance.
Should the recommendations prove to be of no value, that, too, is of scientific interest and should be reported.
We recognize, and no doubt you recognize also, that close cooperation between you who are in the field and we who are abstracting and recording is absolutely necessary. Only by such close cooperation, and by your actual testing of the material which we supply, will it be eventually possible to establish a scientifically sound case for Edgar Cayce’s work.
Extracts from the readings on various diseases are being sent to our members who request them. Upon our recommendation some of these individuals may come to you for help. We know that you will guide them as to the advisability of using, for their particular ailment, such methods of treatment as have been outlined in such extracts.
We welcome your suggestions and advice regarding this phase of our work.
Sincerely yours,
ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT, INC. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Mgr.

According to EDGAR CAYCE’S PHYSICAL READINGS
Survey for ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT, INCORPORATED Virginia Beach, Virginia
Abstract #1 March 23, 1946
This is a survey of 18 cases of deafness, several cases of which were mixed with other complaints. These readings were made over a period of approximately 20 years and on people whose ages varied from 6 to 73. The following points were noted and deserve consideration:
Under the age of 25 there were 2 cases. Between 25 and 50 there were 8 cases. Over 50 years of age there were 8. There were 10 readings on women and 8 on men. The types of deafness were classified as follows:
- Catarrhal 8
- Mixed 3
- Nerve deafness 2
- Toxic 1
- Mechanical 4
The classifications of types of deafness were arrived at from the perusal of the reading and wherever possible from the medical diagnosis as submitted in the application.
It is recognized that the diagnosis of these conditions from the medical standpoint is extremely weak and it is hoped that by the card system the attending physician’s diagnosis as well as his progress and treatment reports may at a later date be secured.
The findings throughout these cases have corresponded uniformly with the diagnosis.
The treatment as indicated from the readings is as follows:
In 17 of the 18 cases mobilization and manipulation of the lesion cervical and upper dorsal areas was recommended.
Finger surgery was recommended in 10 cases. Prescriptions ranging from special massage ointments to internal medicaments were given for 11 patients. Colonic irrigations were recommended for 4 patients. Diets, cutting down the use of carbohydrates were recommended for 4. Meditation was prescribed 3 times. Oil packs twice. Radio-Active Appliance twice. Hot baths, twice. Violet ray, twice. Elliott treatment in the nose, once. Cabinet baths, once. Wet Cell Appliance, once. Static electricity, once.
It will be noted that out of 18 cases, mechanical manipulation was recommended for 17, and finger surgery was recommended for 10. It may be assumed that by and large in the treatment of deafness manipulation and finger surgery have much to offer irrespective of what other modality or adjunct is used.
Our index case numbers used in above survey:
319- 413- 657- 811- 1052- 1076- 1090- 1169- 1309- 1438- 1661- 1861- 2051- 2543- 3267- 3335- 3546- 5315-
Note: This, the first in a series of abstracted and synthesized studies from the readings of Edgar Cayce, is presented for your convenience and quick reference. If this study on DEAFNESS meets with your approval, other studies will be forthcoming as quickly as possible. The success of this effort will depend upon your wholehearted cooperation. We ask that you fill in and return the enclosed progress card with your notes and comments. This will guide us in our further abstracts by your request.

R24. 8/25/71 Letter from Dr. Charles W. Snyder, Jr., D.O.M.Sc (oto), Chairman of the Department of E.NT., Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, to Mrs. Eleanor Davis:
“Your letter of August 13, 1971, regarding ‘finger surgery’ has been forwarded to me by the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“‘Finger Surgery’ is indicated where there is a hearing loss due to lymphoid tissue in or around the Fossa of Rosenmuller.
The diagnosis is obtained either with the use of a ‘O’ laryngeal mirror with indirect visualization of the fossa or by direct visualization with the use of the nasopharyngoscope.
“The removal of lymphoid tissue from this area should be done by someone familiar with this procedure. This form of therapy is by no means a treatment for all kinds of deafness. It should be confined to the aforementioned.
“I trust this will answer your question. To my knowledge there is no printed material in this regard.”
R25. 12/28/71 Letter from Dr. Douglas J. Muncie, D.O., to Robert O. Clapp, A.R.E. Membership Department:
“I am familiar with Edgar Cayce’s readings and the fact that he suggested Finger Surgery in many cases of deafness. I remember, in 1945, my father [Curtis H. Muncie, D.O.] telling me he had several patients whose hearing he restored as the result of these readings.
“I also have had numerous patients who told me about Finger Surgery being mentioned in Cayce’s readings and showed me a reprint of an article on Deafness published by A.R.E. which mentions Finger Surgery. [See March, 1974, A.R.E. News.]
“As far as I know, there is no one who uses this method of treatment now. It is not taught in the colleges and it is not an accepted method of treatment by the A.M.A. Yet we continue restoring hearing and to many who failed to respond to the regular methods.
“I am sending you PREVENTION AND CURE OF DEAFNESS [Curtis H. Muncie, D.O., author. See it under reports to 3511-1 after above reports] and some articles which will interest you.
“I will be glad to treat cases referred to me if they are favorable at the time of examination.”

Linda Clark Presents:
MOST DEAFNESS CAN BE CURED
HOW IS YOUR HEARING?
An estimated 15,000,000, Americans suffer partial or complete loss of hearing. Five million of them are victims of progressive deafness, which means that in time they will be cut off from all sound.
A man has pioneered a unique method of treating deafness. He was so successful that word-of-mouth praise brought him the largest ear practice in the world. His offices occupied the entire 29th floor of the Hotel Delmonico on Park Avenue in New York City. For 50 years, until his death in 1963, he treated an average of 75 patients a day, His name - Dr. Curtis Hamilton Muncie.
Dr. Muncie discovered a means of curing most types of deafness which has been considered absolutely incurable. He toured the United States and several European countries, holding free clinics and giving demonstrations of his new found technic for increasing the ability to hear in deaf people whose auditory nerves had not degenerated completely.
His son, Douglas J. Muncie, D.O., who has been in practice in Miami, Florida, since 1946 and will soon open another office in Las Vegas, Nevada, was taught the technic by his father and is the only doctor, I know of perhaps the only one in the world - who practices this treatment.
NOTE: Since the publication of my book GET WELL NATURALLY in 1965 I have received many letters requesting more information on the treatment for deafness rendered by Dr. Douglas J. Muncie of Miami, Florida. Also, as a result of my book, a number of hard-of-hearing citizens sought Dr. Muncie’s aid and have written me that their hearing was restored - and how grateful they are! Hence - this article on the Muncie Method.
DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT
An accident discovery (1910) - that the Eustachian tube in most deafness is deranged or deformed and that it is large enough to be successfully treated with the finger - marked the origin of this method. Let me quote from the book of Dr. Muncie, Senior, Prevention and Cure of Deafness:
“A boy of 11 was referred to me for an adenoid operation. He had been deaf since an attack of scarlet fever, and the best efforts of otologists had failed to improve his hearing. After removing his adenoids by the usual method, I examined the nasopharynx with my finger and found lateral adenoids remaining which had grown about the orifice of the Eustachian tubes. I broke them down digitally, and while doing so my finger slipped into a depression and with slight pressure entered to the extent of about 3/8th of an inch. This I later realized was the Eustachian tube, but at the time I did not recognize it because anatomical texts had described the Eustachian tube as being the size of a goose’s quill and thus too small for entrance of the finger.
“The boy’s hearing was ‘miraculously’ restored, but in two weeks some of the improvement was lost. In my effort to determine how the hearing had been benefited I examined over 500 Eustachian tubes with my finger while patients were under an anesthetic at our sanatorium. I found the Eustachian tube is large enough to be treated digitally. I again operated on my little patient, reconstructing his tubes, and then gave him after-treatment to maintain the tubes in their corrected condition until they became normal. His hearing was restored and remained so for years afterwards.”

After several years of research in hundreds of cases, Dr. Muncie consolidated his findings (1920) in concrete and definite conclusions. He had isolated eight different types of tubal deformity, of all which cause deafness, and developed and perfected a specific technic for correction of each deformity, which he called “Reconstruction of the Eustachian Tubes,” and treatment for normalization of each type.
Dr. Muncie’s conclusions checked consistently with physiology, anatomy, pathology and physics, but obviously disagreed with many time-honored medical theories. His discoveries combine to make the Muncie Reconstruction Method revolutionary, both in concept and results. In the wake of this method were born prejudice, petty professional jealousy, and bitter opposition by many doctors. Such is the lot of all great scientific discoveries in their “pioneer” stage.
RECONSTRUCTION OF THE EUSTACHIAN TUBES
Reconstruction of the Eustachian tubes is accomplished by a single operation without the use of cutting instruments. An anesthetic of nitrous oxide and oxygen is administered. Then the sensitive finger of the aurist determines the exact type and extent of the tubal deformity, as well as the condition of the surrounding tissues, and by means of molding process the deformity of the Eustachian tube is corrected.
A small instrument which Dr. Muncie invented is then introduced via the patient’s mouth, opening the osseous labyrinth, the half-inch section of the tube which cannot be dilated because it is surrounded by bone and in most cases is also closed. The average case requires less than eight minutes! The patient rests for one hour, the hearing is tested and compared with the original test, and he returns home. There is usually an immediate improvement of 10% or more.
Further treatments are then given, without anesthetic, to gently mold the Eustachian tubes so they will not become deformed again; to further improve the hearing and make for permanent results. Many cases achieve 20% to 50% improvement in their hearing, most average 30% improvement. Thus, a person having 50% hearing and wearing a hearing aid may receive 20% to 30% improvement and will then be able to hear normally without an aid. Other cases with a severe hearing loss of 70% to 80% can usually be improved so they will have normal (70-100) hearing with the use of an aid. Total deafness cannot be benefited, since the auditory nerves are degenerated and cannot be restored by any method of treatment.
TYPES OF DEAFNESS WHICH RESPOND
Dr. Muncie states, “Most deafness can be prevented and hearing partially or completely restored to a large percentage of cases through this corrective approach to deafness without cutting surgery. Patients who have 40% or more hearing are the most favorable.
“The types of deafness successfully treated over the past 59 years are: catarrhal deafness, otosclerosis, nerve deafness, destroyed drums or suppurative deafness, Meniere’s disease, some cases of children born deaf or severe deafness in infancy and aviation deafness. Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can be cleared up in eight out of 10 cases.”
TECHNICAL ARTICLES
Over the years, approximately 60 technical articles written by Dr. Curtis Muncie and Dr. Douglas Muncie have appeared in various medical journals, describing the results obtained through this method of treating deafness. More than 50 Muncie Clinics were held in the principal cities of America and Europe before scientists and physicians of all schools and were sponsored by over 30 different scientific societies of this profession.
THE A.M.A. AT WORK
At the Paris Clinic of Dr. Muncie Senior, in August 1924, members of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Paris and visiting specialists of Europe received his work so well that it was enshrined in the International Archives of the University of Paris, and the French Government wanted to present the doctor with the Legion of honor. But the American Medical Association wrote to the University and warned that if this honor were given Dr. Muncie the A.M.A. would send no more medical students to Paris. This was because Dr. Muncie was an Osteopathic Physician.
The great success of the Muncie Method can be guaged both by the wealth of clinical results (supported by scientific background) and by criticism born of the misconception that “it can’t be done because it has never been done before.” Dr. Douglas Muncie writes, “Medical politics and controversies should not exist when they obstruct issues of value to life, health and hearing - the rightful property of humanity.”
NUTRITION IN DEAFNESS
Dr. Douglas Muncie supplements his corrective digital treatment of the Eustachian tubes with the use of natural concentrates to supply specific nutrition to the inner ear and auditory nerve. He is a follower of natural health methods, and claims specific natural concentrates aid in his working with the deaf.
Straining to hear keeps the person with defective hearing in a constant state of tension, leading to further nervous exhaustion and irritability. This also holds true for those who converse with the hard-of-hearing. This can cause breached relationships - both personal and business. Of the 15,000,000 deaf people in the United States, 3,000,000 are children whose entire lives could be ruined because of parental indifference or lack of knowledge. With today’s advancement in medicine and surgery, there is little reason to ignore the loss of hearing - hoping the trend will reverse itself. Face the facts and have your hearing checked regularly. You have nothing to lose - everything to gain, particularly since there is now hope for hearing improvement.

GENERAL INFORMATION Patients who are able to hear conversation three feet or farther from the ear, without the use of a hearing aid, or who have 40% or more hearing as measured by an audiometer, have responded favorably to this method of treatment and many have been restored to normal.
This method is unique in that it corrects and REMOVES the underlying cause of deafness without cutting surgery and without hospitalization. This is a molding process done entirely with the surgeon’s fingers for the purpose of correcting deformities of the Eustachian tubes, while under a short and light anesthesia.
Post-operative treatments are required to establish maximum and permanent restoration. In most cases immediate improvement of hearing is established and head noises and vertigo are eventually eliminated. The amount of Post operative treatment varies with each individual but the average case requires a minimum of 3 weeks. Advanced cases require 2 or 3 more months of Post-operative treatments.
People residing within reasonable commuting distance of this office may receive two to five treatment a week, and in some cases two consecutive treatments a week. Patients from distant locations remain here for two to three weeks and receive five to six treatments a week. They may then return home for a period of rest from treatment of three to six months, resume further treatment periodically for a week to two weeks at a time until the case has been completed.
No hospitalization is required and patients are not inconvenienced or incapacitated by the operation or treatment.

B1. 10/4/43 [3511]‘s letter to EC:
“I deeply appreciate your letter of September 27th in which you have granted an appointment for a reading on December 17, 1943 at 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. EWT. I am also very grateful to Miss [5098] for her kindness in making possible my participation in this spiritual quest.
“It is my intention to be at …, Florida at the hour appointed. The location is my Church which I love so much and where I can pray and meditate most effectively. Miss […] and my wife will join with me in meditation and prayer at that hour. We all seek only the will of God. And we have prayed many times for God’s blessings upon you in your sincere devotion to serving others.
“As to questions, I have them by the score but none of them arises from any mood of doubting either the wisdom or goodness of God. I am content as things now are, if He can use me better the way I am. The questions arise in the course of an objective quest for the truth on a no-matter what basis.
“What has caused or is causing my deafness? Can it be corrected? Will it grow worse? How shall it affect my ministry to which I sincerely feel called of God? Is my profession and work a factor? Where should I live in relation to best health? Is it God’s will that I stay where I am or go elsewhere? What factors are associated with the present necessity for my taking thyroid and hydro-chloric acid? Is there either a vitamin or hormone deficiency? Is there any way in which I am failing to do the will of God that is a factor in my physical condition which I can now correct?
“I want to express my deepest appreciation for your work as a servant of God and pray that you can help me to become a better one. If an emergency reading should arise, I want you to feel free to use my hour for someone who may need it more.”
