This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of January, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - [3527], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. Lydia J. S. Gray.

Time of Reading 3:40 to 3:55 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Washington.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3527].

3. As we find, these are disturbances. While the body may become very much perturbed, we find that these problems may be met in self - if there is the consideration of the coordination between spiritual and mental things, and then living them, and with the expectancy of using and knowing that what may be used is as much of God as self may make of same in its manner of relationship to self and others.

4. Hence we have a pathological and a psychological condition to be met. For there are those periods when these seizures arise, from lesions in the lacteal duct area and in the 1st and 2nd cervical, when the body is almost possessed by its own self in relationship to those problems it is meeting in self. And this is not good. For these influences ordinarily leave the body-mind in those states of discouragement, of hating self, of wanting to blame everything on everybody else - and then condemning self also.

5. These must be met in self first - by the spiritual attitudes, spiritual concepts. Know that in self alone ye may not meet such, but that as ye forgive - even yourself so may ye be forgiven by Him who is life, light and immortality. So may the healing influence of the Christ-Consciousness come to be a part of the individual self. Know that He has meant, “I stand and knock.” Open - don’t close the door to that Christ-Consciousness. Don’t put Him away. Don’t shut the door. Let Him enter, that He may abide with thee.

6. For as the promise is, “I and the Father may abide with thee.” Thy best self, and the way to get rid of that which has disturbed you, will abide with you.

7. Then physically apply for three days in succession each week, for at least an hour at the time, the hot Castor Oil Packs over the area of the liver and lacteal duct.

8. Also at the same time apply the hot Glyco-Thymoline Packs (using an electric pad) to the base of the brain, extending to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cervical. Put these on cold but apply the electric pad to make the body absorb same.

9. After the three-day series of the Packs each week, take internally at least two tablespoonsful of Olive Oil to eliminate the poisons and accumulations.

10. We would also follow each three-day series each week with a good massage thoroughly given, by a good osteopath. Correct those areas of the coccyx, 4th dorsal, 4th cervical and 4th lumbar. With the breaking up of the lesions in the first cervicals, there should be the reducing of the periods of disturbance and a change in the activity to the locomotory centers, so as to bring better conditions for the body.

11. But do first things first. Don’t condemn anyone nor self. Don’t feel sorry for self - that’s the best way to condemn, for you condemn everyone else!

12. Ready for questions.

13. (Q) Please explain the trance-like state which follows one of these spells. (A) Read what we have just given. It is almost possession! Do these things as we have indicated.

14. (Q) What will cure the rectal trouble? (A) Do these things outlined - we will correct these disturbances.

15. (Q) Would some particular vocation be more beneficial than another? (A) Do as suggested and there will be much for the entity to do, and it will think along a different line entirely!

R1. 2/4/44 [3527]‘s letter to EC: “I realize I’m a little late in acknowledging the reading, but when it arrived I was just starting one of my bad periods, which lasted about two weeks.

“I’ve tried the treatments now for two weeks and although it’s a little early to expect much change, I feel very much encouraged. Now if I can just get the mental side of it to clear up, I’ll be very relieved.

“I showed the doctor who is handling my case the reading and he was quite interested. You asked for the osteopath, he is, Dr. C. Heckman [Claude C. Heckman], 716 Shafer Bldg., Seattle.

“I’ll let you know from time to time just how things are progressing. I would like to put in my request for a Life Reading.”

R2. 8/8/44 [3527]‘s letter to EC: “Please consider this as my application for a check physical reading. My first reading no. 3527-1 was on Jan. 5, 1944.

“After seven months of carefully carrying out your instructions in the first reading, I am pleased to say the epileptic spells have improved very much. Also the minor ailments have come along nicely. But Mr. Cayce, this trance-like mental state which follows each series of epileptic spells isn’t improving at all. I mentioned these spells in my first letter.

“This mental condition lasts about a week or ten days. During this time I always feel as though I have died and have gone to heaven, and living on another plane of consciousness. These spells are impairing my concentration and memory so, I’m not able to hold a job.”

Here are some questions:

1. Am I following your instructions correctly?
2. Could all this trouble be caused by a thyroid or goiter condition, as one doctor said?

B1. 10/14/43 Letter from Mrs. Lydia J. Schrader Gray: “Last Friday evening Paul, Lorraine and I called on Dr. Lorimer and his wife. Your ears must have been burning - for our conversation was of you. How we became acquainted - the Readings and what they meant to us - and of course the book, THERE IS A RIVER. It’s a revelation to Dr. Lorimer and he has loaned it to several friends and other ministers.

“It’s going to CHANGE some of his thinking - but he is open and eager. Suddenly he said - ‘I’m moved to tell you about a young man who came to my study at the church. He’s not a member of our church and I think he heard me speak - at the University. Anyway - he came and told me he was at his wits end - at the end of the road. For ten years he has been afflicted with attacks that appeared to be epileptic and they come usually once a month and leave him in a trance like condition for a week afterwards. Anyway - he cannot hold any position - he’s been fired from one job after another because of his absence. The attacks fortunately occur at home - usually when he is in bed. The young man says - ‘he cannot live a normal life - he can’t think of marrying and life as it is isn’t worth living.’

“He is now thirty four and this has been going on for ten long years. Well - Mr. Lorimer wondered if he should acquaint the young man with your ‘Life Story’, thereby offering a RAY OF HOPE. We all said, ‘by all means do so’ and if he or his family cared to meet us personally we would do everything in our power - to encourage that hope and give him added confidence.

“We met last night - in the pastor’s study! He’s a fine young man clean cut - dark hair and dark eyes. Truly - he reminds me of Hugh Lynn. They look SO much alike. His voice is quiet and you know that he has suffered.

“His parents have spent their all on doctors for him - he’s been dehydrated, gone on a soybean diet - etc., etc. After reading the case on epilepsy, on page 386 of There is a River, he became filled with hope for the case seems so much like his own in that the spells came on - not during youth - or rather CHILDHOOD, but in their twenties, so that he feels his spells have nothing to do with HEREDITY - as his parents know of no epilepsy in the family anywhere.

“We all hope that after you have heard from him that in some way you can consider him as an EMERGENCY case, for naturally, his life is at a stand still - unless he can be cured - for he cannot seek a position - while these spells continue - and to wait for over a year! might just seem too much - or too long under the existing circumstances.

“Have you by any chance reserved some of your time for just such emergency cases?? If your wonderful gift could only be shared by others so that you ALONE would not have to hear this great burden…you must of course, protect and guard your own strength. Mr. Lorimer is of course deeply interested and he says, he’ll preach about your great gift from the pulpit, if this boy receives aid. He introduced me to a man who wants to own the book - a Mr. Robbins, he said, Mr. Lorimer took the book back before he had finished it. We were at the Church Supper and Lorraine said - ‘many an ear was bending’ towards our conversation. We were speaking of you and your work.

“The young man’s name is [3527] - born Feb. 3rd, 1909. You will hear from him direct and I hope and pray that he has been guided to us at just the right moment.” [Remaining portion of 10/14/43 letter is under 1770-8, Par. R5.]

B2. 10/14/43 [3527]‘s letter to EC: “My friends Mrs. Lydia Gray, Lorraine Schrader and Paul Owens have talked so enthusiastically about the great work you are doing, that I’m sure you are the one to come to. The power you possess seems to me the only thing that will ever cure me of what the doctors diagnose as epilepsy.

“I’ve spent the last twelve years going from one doctor to another without much relief. After so many discouragements, I was just about ready to give up when my pastor suggested I read the book ‘There Is A River’ which I did.

“Mr. Cayce if you could give me a physical reading I would be ever grateful.

“I will attempt to faithfully follow the treatment prescribed.”

B3. 12/29/43 [3527]‘s letter to EC: “I am sending the necessary data and questions you suggested in your last letter. At the time of the reading, I will be at … I will be in my room and in prayerful meditation as you suggested.

“Here is the list of questions for the physical reading:

1. What is the original reason or cause of these spells, which started over twelve years ago?
2. Are they epileptic in nature?
3. Please explain the trance-like state which follows the physical disturbances.
4. Am I, after one of these periods of attacks temporally on another plane of consciousness?
5. Will my memory and concentration improve as this condition gets better?
6. Is there anything to be done to cure this rectal trouble that has bothered me for sometime?
7. Could you name a vocation that might be helpful?
8. Would you recommend a change of residence for the betterment of my health? If so what city?
9. Please name the Seattle Doctor who should be asked to carry out the treatments prescribed.
