This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 10th day of June, 1931, in accordance with request made by her daughter, Mrs. [959].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, W. Va.
-
GC: You will now have before you the body of [356], who is in her living room (address). You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time, giving the cause of the existent conditions; also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body. You will speak distinctly at a normal rate of speech. You will answer questions which will be asked.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [356], here. Now, we find there are abnormal conditions in the physical functioning of the body, as well as organic disturbances. These, as we find, effect the body in specific ways and manners, and destroy the effective work at times the body is able, or may do.
-
In considering the conditions, much might be given as respecting the history, or that as has brought about the disorders that at present exist. These, as we give then, will be rather that as exists which must be correlated WITH that as the body has SUFFERED periodically in the past.
-
IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, we find this tends to a heaviness, and a pressure in heart’s action, not eliminating as it should. Hence drosses or accumulations in extremities of the body, as pains in the shoulders, intercostal pains through the right and at times through the left side, under the arms, across the chest at times, heaviness in the region of the heart. MOST of this in the region of the heart, however, is INDIGESTION, though this produced by the disorders functionally AND organically of the eliminating system as a whole.
-
IN THE NERVE SYSTEM, this we find under the stress or strain as produced by pressures, caused or produced in the cerebro-spinal system from the attempt of the circulation to be made normal though CONGESTED areas, from poisons or accumulation in muscular tissue, as the intercostal, as in the brachial, as in the lumbar and locomotary plexuses of the system, so that even deep breathing of the body at times gives catchy pains across the diaphragm area.
-
IN THE FUNCTIONING ORGANS, brain forces are very good. The organs of the sensory system, that as is normal with the age, with the drosses apparent in the system; that is, these become ACUTE at times in their normal functioning, at others dimness in the eyes, drumming in the ears, fullness in the throat, and a general tendency of a throbbing feeling in the pulsations, or the capillary circulation.
-
In throat, bronchial, lungs and larynx, these are very good, or near normal, considering the conditions.
-
Heart’s action subnormal, or pulsation low, with a pressure high in blood supply. The respiration is sometimes faster than normal, at other times near normal and again below normal.
-
Digestive system, “all out of kelter!” We have had indications of, and still some existent conditions, of the gall bladder, or gall ducts, showing a blockage, or congestion, from sediments accumulating there, or gallstone accumulation, and this producing then sour stomach, tendency for constipation, with periods - or times when there are attempts to bring about eliminations - of a diarrhea nature, but lasting only a short period.
-
With the distresses in the lower portion of hepatic circulation, not overactive in quantity but too frequent activity of the kidneys at times; this producing irritation in the bladder from ACIDITY of system, and the ATTEMPT of the kidneys to ELIMINATE an extra amount of poisons thrown into that area for elimination.
-
The eliminations through the capillary circulation, or sweat pores, low; though at times there is the tendency to be clamminess, or cold feet, and flushes in face and perspiration over the body, but an abnormal character or nature. Swelling at times in the feet or lower limbs. This reflex only, from the kidney condition.
-
Now, to meet the needs of the conditions in the present, we would begin first with the castor oil packs over the liver area. These should be with heavy flannel, and sufficient oil to thoroughly DAMPEN same, or dipped in oil and wrung out - made hot and kept hot, which may be done with HOT salt packs, and when these cool heat them again. Keep this on each day for at least an hour to two hours, see?
-
After these have been kept on the body for four to five days, and hour to two hours each day, begin with all the olive oil the body WILL assimilate, but give it in VERY small doses - half a teaspoonful at a time, giving it every hour or every two hours, see?
-
Take a high enema after the oil has been taken for a couple of days.
-
Then prepare this, in three doses: [Each capsule containing the following:]
Podophyllum…1/2 grain, Leptandrin…1 grain, Sanguinaria…1 grain, Cascara Sagrada…1 grain, Senna…1/2 grain, Dover’s Powder…1/4 grain.
-
That’s a dose! Take these one day apart, see?
-
During the period - with the oil packs, and with the oil given, before the cathartic is given, and following same - we would take small quantities of ELM in each glass of water taken, just a pinch between the forefinger and thumb, put in the water just a little while before taken. Should this become offensive, in that it produces belching from non-activity through the system, discontinue and take Yellow Saffron water, or tea, see? made twenty grains to one pint of water, steeped as tea would be, strained, and drink cool - see?
-
When at this stage, we will find that the diet will of necessity be of more a liquid diet, though that that will be stimulating to the system will be well, as beef broth, chicken broth, or such. The general diet would be:
-
Mornings - stewed fruits, with rice cakes, or whole wheat bran cakes, or coarse ground meal cakes, see? A little tea or coffee, not too strong.
-
Noon - as many of the green vegetables as may be well made into a salad, which may be eaten with dressing of the oil base; that is, whether the French dressing or Mayonnaise - either would be well. At this period it would be well that some milk be taken, of one nature or another, preferably buttermilk, or that which has been treated with that that produces the proper fermentation.
-
Evenings - small quantities of meat, but these should only be those that do not carry fats.
-
It would be well that the body, each day before retiring, have a thorough massage with an electrically DRIVEN vibrator. Use that of the cup, or vacuum cup, over the body. Extend this to the extremities, especially along the main nerves as come to same, base of brain, along the side of the jaw, out to the arms and over the shoulders. The body will rest much better.
-
When necessity requires to relieve pains, we would use the enema to alleviate the pressure in the intestinal system. Be sure, however, that a portion of the last water used, especially, carries Glyco-Thymoline, or Boris, or Boracic Acid, as an antiseptic in same. Or the first quantity - that is, to the gallon of water - we may use a level teaspoonful of salt and a heaping tablespoonful of soda, with a little of the Glyco - that is, a teaspoonful - with same. The last water used should carry at least - in a gallon and a half of water - two tablespoonsful of Glyco, see? Do that. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What causes vomiting? (A) Backing up from the conditions in the duodenum, produced by the gall not acting properly in the system - the gall ducts.
-
(Q) Is her heart alright? (A) As has been given, pressures produced by disturbance in the hepatic circulation, as well as in the general circulation, by poisons in same. Do as we have given, and we will relieve these pressures.
-
We are through for the present.
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/20/31 Daughter’s letter: ”…We are following treatment for mother and find she is improving. When I read the reading to her she said ‘Well he expresses better how I feel than I can’ but she said ‘I can vouch for every line, its every bit true’ and she is trying to follow every letter.”
R2. 6/25/31 “My mother has been taking the treatment prescribed and is making wonderful progress. Everything is just like Mr. Cayce said, to the very letter. She just told me this a.m. to keep track of the reading and she would follow a course every year in the springtime. She thinks the hot castor oil packs helped so much.”
R3. 7/6/31 Daughter’s letter: ”…Mother is giving your work the credit of her life. She feels like she would not be alive today except for the information and direction of the reading. She is improving every day and to say she is ‘broadcasting’ your work is expressing it mildly…”
R4. 1/31/32 Daughter’s letter: ”…Mother wants to have a reading soon…”
R5. 5/2/32 ”…Mother had spoken about having another reading but she has been talked to so much (folks trying to get her to save me from insanity) that I don’t know what she now intends to do. But she seems perfectly well…”
R6. 6/5/33 Daughter’s letter: ”…My mother is not so well and she asked me to write you for a reading, so give it at your very earliest date…simply write her the day and hour… I will write questions she wishes answered on another sheet …”
“What causes breaking out with hives or itching bumps? Is the mineral oil now being used the right thing, and should it be continued? Is she able to stand a trip soon to Va. Beach? Any other advice?”
R7. 6/13/33 See 356-2, and subsequent good Reports.
R8. 1/26/34 Daughter’s letter which was used as a report on the case in the A.R.E. Feb. Bulletin:
“My mother was taken suddenly very ill in May, 1926, with some sort of hard convulsions which lasted all day, leaving her very weak. After close examination, the doctor reported her heart in good shape and no trace could be found for the peculiar attack. Two years from almost the same day she had another such ‘spell’. This left her weaker. Still the next year she had another, in May. Each time getting weaker and was longer in regaining her strength.
“In the fall of 1930, we became acquainted with Mr. Cayce and interested in the work, so I asked for a reading. And such a reading it was, six pages in length [double space typing], describing every condition, taking blood supply, nerve systems and the organs separately. Anything but a good condition was shown. But the treatment was simple and plain. We began the treatment and followed the directions to the letter.
“Mother was then 74 years of age. She had been rather stout all her life, but since 1926 had been losing flesh until now she was very thin. The first reading was given on the 10th day of June, 1931. She began to improve almost immediately, and today at 77 is in wonderful health and able to do her own work around the house and go where she wishes.
“In June, 1933, she had a check reading [356-2]. The report was very gratifying. With a few changes in the diet and some changes in medicine, she has continued to gain in strength and weight.” [signed] [959], daughter
R9. 4/5/34 Daughter’s letter: “Mother has come to the place where she needs another going over. So am writing for a ck. rdg. for her. Please give it as early as possible for I have to be leaving…the latter part of the month and would like to get her started on any new treatment that may be suggested… Many thanks for the previous help you have been able to render to Mother. She never fails to say she owes the latter years of her life to the service you have rendered her. She has wonderful faith.”
R10. 4/11/34 See 356-3, and her [the daughter’s] letter reporting on her mother’s condition as follows:
R11. 4/20/34 Daughter’s letter: “When I wrote for the reading for Mother, I was very much disturbed about her condition. She had gotten so much worse. Her breathing was real laborious and panting, especially at night and when going up steps. She began at once on the new treatment and I can see a decided change already. While we were waiting for the reading our family physician chanced to came in here and seeing how she was feeling, gave her an examination and told me that she had a leak, or I believe he said lesion or something of the sort in her heart that was worth watching and to keep her absolutely quiet. Well, I was right much in hot water for I just did not know how the reading was going to sound to her, for she gets very blue and worried about her condition at times and I never tell her that I worried about her condition, but I knew I could not keep her from seeing the reading so you cannot know how relieved I was when the reading had no reference to a leak in her heart. In Feb. she had a pretty close shave with pneumonia and of course I was not surprised at a weakened heart condition. She still suffers with weakness, though her breathing is much easier. So I think she is responding very well considering her age. Where the reading says ‘Many of the ministrations that have been outlined would be well to take or consider’ etc. I had been wondering if that refers to the castor oil packs? If she keeps on feeling so weak I will try that again, for she received wonderful relief by it. Just at this time I have to be away and will not be able to give the vibrator treatment…”
R12. 6/12/34 Daughter’s ltr.: “You have not had any way of hearing of my loss save through me, so I am sure you do not know. Mother was taken with one of her regular spring attacks on Apr. 25th and passed away on Apr. 27th. I was not at home when she was first taken but hurried on as soon as I heard. She had not been able to react very well from the change in medicine, tho she was working faithfully and I believe had she been a little more careful of the diet it might have been different, I do not know, but if you remember the last rdg. [356-3] was not at all encouraging or not nearly so as the others. She had been gradually growing weaker all winter tho she made a brave fight… She said often the past few months that she owed the latter yrs. of her life to you.”
R13. 4/29/40 “The physician’s analysis was heart weakness and gallstones. Her improvement was 100% when we followed the first rdg. I am sure that the Edgar Cayce treatment prolonged her life for 2 or 3 years.”

B1. 5/30/31 Daughter’s [Mrs. [959]] letter:
“My mother has been under the weather for some time. But night before last she had a return of some trouble that the doctor does not seem able to diagnose.” She submitted questions, including: “What causes the pressure feeling in chest? Pains in arms? Vomiting? Has she ever had gall bladder trouble? Is her diet alright? Is her heart alright? Any suggestions?”
