This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 26th day of June, 1933, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [360], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., by her sister, Miss […], and recommended by Miss [1377].

Time of Reading 3:20 to 3:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Mass. (Physical Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [360].

2. Now, as we find, there are specific conditions that are the result of a combination of disorders in the system. And the effects of these are in the disturbances of other portions of the system.

3. In times back we find there were some injuries to the body that at the time appeared to be the results of conditions in the system form dis-ease as from childhood, or from an infectious disorder - measles combined with other distresses. These in their state settled in portions of the system that hindered the circulation to portions of the body.

4. Later, from a contraction of a congestive condition in the body - or from that known as influenza, or the flu, there was an increased irritation to those centers that already hindered impulses and circulation from the general system to the specific centers in digestive area, and in those sensory reflexes to the head.

5. These, then, have gradually grown to be such as to impair the vision, through strangulation and irritation to the eyes. These active in a reflex manner make an impairment through the secondary cardiac plexus to the cardiac portion of the stomach. Hence an irritation that exists there. At times this causes greater distress through the manner in which there is produced this choking of the organ itself as to cause regurgitation from the duodenum to the stomach proper, as to cause overacidity - or an accumulation of hydrochloric fluids in stomach proper.

6. The reactions to the sensory system, and circulation to the head and eyes - optic nerve and the orb socket - are affected through the impingements and the activity of the circulation through the secondary ganglia, and 5th and 3rd nerve impulse to the head, as to cause at times more reaction in face than pain in the eye itself - save at periodical periods.

7. The centers from which we find these conditions arise are in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal plexus, in the 3rd and 5th cervical plexus - and in the 2nd cervical plexus do they affect directly the conditions.

8. As we find, these may be materially aided; while not relieving the condition in its entirety from the manner or character of the impingements to the nerves to the brain and through the optic centers - or wholly those that cause irritation to lids, these may be relieved to such an extent as to increase visibility to the body to at least seventy-five percent, and through the aid of lens and through the activities that may be kept, will bring a much more active and normal result or effect to the body.

9. The removal of these impingements in the same area as affect the heart’s action, to the cardiac and secondary cardiac reflexes, will make for a much better enjoyment of the foods taken - and of assimilation in the system. And the general health will make for much easier conditions for the body.

10. In the beginning, then, we would first use those applications on that portion of the cerebro-spinal system indicated, of mud - or mud made from Fuller’s Earth, with an equal amount of oil to make it pliable or applicable to that portion of the system.

11. Then, with 3 to 4 ounces of Fuller’s Earth, mix an ounce of Cedar Oil, that will be capable of being applied for at least two applications.

12. This, however, should be applied directly to the body itself; not in cloth, though a cloth may cover same; that is, the 3rd and 4th dorsal, the 3rd and 4th cervical, or reaching from the 2nd to the 5th cervical - see?

13. Apply this every other day until 10 applications have been made.

14. Then begin with OSTEOPATHIC adjustments for these portions of the system, these being made every other day for at least three or four weeks of treatments.

15. Then, in the second week of the osteopathic adjustments (not before), begin with the application of the violet ray anode directly to the eye.

16. Cleanse the eyes each morning with a weak antiseptic solution, that will cleanse the eyelids of secretions that will form from the continued stimulation to the circulation through the applications.

17. When the osteopathic treatments are given, there should be stimulation throughout the head and to the centers leading to the optic and auditory centers.

18. We would be mindful that the diets taken are those more easily assimilated, that consist of foods tending more towards an alkalin reaction for the system.

19. As we find, these will make for better conditions to the body.

20. When a full course has been taken of the Fuller’s Earth and oil, as given, with the three to four weeks period of osteopathy manipulation AND adjustments - with the violet ray anode used as given, then we would have a rest period of one and a half to two weeks.

21. After the rest period we would give further instructions for this body, [360].

22. Ready for questions.

23. (Q) How long at each period should the mud be left on? (A) It should be applied in the evening and removed of morning, and cleanse the body.

24. (Q) Of what thickness should this be put on? (A) This quantity over these places will make for about an eighth to a quarter inch thickness, over these specific centers indicated.

These will draw, and act as irritants sufficient to allow the circulation - with adjustments - to become effective in removing drosses, and in correcting the condition.

Do this, and we may then give further instructions.

R1. 7/2/33 Sister’s letter: “Mrs. [360] rec’d the rdg. and was much impressed with the diagnosis. She wants to carry out the instructions exactly, but they were not clear to us, so we called in the only osteopath near here. He was sure he could cure Mrs. [360] without help from anyone, but as three other osteopaths have tried, at different times, and failed, we are hoping that the other things with the osteopathic treatments will work wonders. He criticized the instructions and said they were vague, but told us if we put the Fuller’s Earth and Cedar Oil mixture on the back of the neck from the hair line down about five inches, he thought we would cover the places which needed attention.

“The only way we could think of to fasten the plaster in place was with adhesive tape, but it seemed as though the oil loosened the tape, for the plaster crumbled and fell out during the night. The discomfort and strong odor kept her awake and her eyes are always worse when she doesn’t sleep well. Also the tape leaves marks which will not come off even with alcohol, and taking it off so many times will probably make her neck sore.

“We would like to know if you can give us any helpful suggestions, because we want to do all we can as quickly as possible. Mrs. [360] has just had a dizzy spell which lasted longer than usual and her eyes are getting worse.

“The doctor also said that she ought not to have more than two treatments a week, but he would give her three if she insisted.

“Will you please tell me what consistency the plaster should be, how large, where to put it, and how to keep it in place? I want to be sure I am doing just right.”

R2. 7/5/33 EC’s letter:

Dear Miss […]:-

“In yours of the 2nd I note what you have to say about Mrs. [360]‘s condition, her reception of the reading, and as to what the osteopath says. I am not at all surprised at the osteopath’s attitude, if he has not had any experience with a work of this kind.

“Under separate cover I am sending to you our current issue of the Bulletin. In this you will see a copy of an address made by one of the best osteopaths in the country. [See R14 below.] I do not say this because he is somewhat in sympathy with our work, but because I am sure your local osteopath - if he is sincere - will tell you that Dr. Richardson is numbered among the best. For a number of years he was instructor in one of the leading osteopathic schools.

You will notice what he has to say about the approach of a physician of any school to a work of this kind.

“But, this has little or nothing to do with your wishes or our desires respecting Mrs. [360]‘s condition. What we want to do is to make this information so very clear to you that you will be able to carry out the instructions and get the results promised. Our experience through the years has been that where there has been the sincere effort to carry out the suggestions made, the results have come as promised.

“Now, as for my interpretation of the reading. The doctor is probably correct in part in saying that the application is made from the edge of the hair down, but it should extend down at least a full span - which is somewhat more than five inches. For, as you notice, the reading says the applications should be to the dorsal as well as the cervical area.

“The ingredients for the mixture of Fuller’s Earth and oil in the proportions given may make the mass too soft, but I should think if there is sufficient oil for the mass to be pliable and yet not too crumbly when first applied, it may be put on a cloth and then held in place possibly by adhesive (as you have tried to use), or by a cloth, band or tape being put around the body. Or, do you find this plausible?

“The advantage of this extending lower, as you will note from consulting the reading, is that there will be relief to the digestive disturbance as well as preparing the body for the treatments that would later be given by the osteopath and through the violet ray.

“If the odor from the plaster keeps Mrs. [360] awake, it may be that the quantity of the oil should be materially reduced; for, to be sure, there must be much more irritation when she has spent a sleepless night - or when the fumes from the oils have irritated the lids because of sleeplessness.

“I don’t just understand why she should have such a protracted dizzy spell, unless it was from the relaxation of the muscles and circulation to the upper portion of the head without balancing same with the nerve connections to the digestive system, which would be done by the plaster reaching to the 3rd and 4th dorsal area, as suggested in the reading.

“Of course, there is not a specific outline for the osteopathic manipulations, but the area where he is to give particular attention is designated. However, if he does not give the outlined treatments in the proper manner the check reading will certainly tell him about it! I would like to refer him (and have him write, if he will) to the following:

“I hope I have given sufficient to enable you to carry out the suggestions as to bring satisfactory results. Know, please, that we want to be of real help, and we believe - from our experiences - that information can be obtained that will be of help.

“I’m enclosing an application blank as you suggest, and we will be very glad to make an appointment for yourself.

R3. 7/8/33 Sister reported: “Her neck is blistered, that is, the part covered by the upper two inches. The lower part is red and sore… Certainly no osteopath could treat it in the present condition, and there have been only four applications. Really only two that stayed on.”

R4. 7/12/33 EC’s wire: “Discontinue packs. Apply camphorated oil to parts affected. When inflammation is sufficiently reduced begin adjustments. See letter.”

R5. 7/12/33 See 360-2, advising the camphorated oil and indicating that too strong or large a quantity of Fuller’s Earth, etc., had been used over too small an area.

R6. 8/9/33 Sister’s ltr.: “[360] is not seeing any wonderful results. She is feeling some better than when we came here for the summer, but she always does feel better and gain weight during the summer months which we spend here… We did hope the osteopathic tr. this time would at least prevent the dizzy spells, but one came on her suddenly last evening and she fell again, though she had a tr. yesterday. Her eyes have been unusually bad for the past 3 days, and the arthritis in her jaws and lack of saliva is worse than usual.

The dr. thinks she should continue to have osteopathic tr. but he does not give violet ray tr. and does not know anyone who does. Perhaps she should have it now, as you say, but it seems to be impossible at present… Mrs. [360] is not easily discouraged, but of course we are both disappointed.”

R7. 8/18/33 EC’s note: “I can’t understand any doctor in the osteopathic profession not being in sympathy with the violet ray treatment. But I believe you could give this tr. as well as he could, or perhaps better, at home. The hand machine costs very little…and with it you could obtain the eye applicator, double-eye applicator. The machine is attached to the light socket, and you would only use it one or two minutes each evening…the violet ray tr. and the osteopathic tr. should work together, but if the doctor gets the impression that he is being interfered with, why it makes a hard proposition.”

R8. 8/22/33 “Last Sat. completed 5 wks. of osteopathic tr. The doctor is also disappointed at lack of good results. He said Sat. that the upper part of Mrs. [360]‘s back and neck were very tense and he could not relax it. Mrs. [360] thinks she may continue with 2 tr. a week unless we have more definite advice from you.”

R9. 8/28/33 EC’s ltr.: “I think you can now understand why the first rdg. recommended that the neck and back be relaxed before the osteopathic treatments. If the physician had been able to take advantage of such relaxing, it would have been much better.

“As soon as Mrs. [360] gets set again (for I understand you will be going home now very soon to N.J.), I want to see what a ck. rdg. will give - and if it will suggest someone to whom she may go for treatment; or if it will outline the treatments so definitely as to be clearly understood and in accord with what is needed. I certainly trust she will soon be on a decided improve.”

R10. 8/29/33 Sister’s ltr.: “Mrs. [360] expects to go home Sept. 5th and would like to have a rdg. as soon after that as you can arrange for it. There is no electricity here, so we could not have used the violet ray. If you can ask questions at the next rdg., Mrs. [360] would like to know if there is anything wrong with her glands. One doctor said her liver and adrenal glands were not working properly. Most of her thyroid was removed several years ago when she had exophthalmic goitre. Eye specialists have said she had tuberculosis of the eyes.”

R11. 8/31/33 EC wrote giving her an appointment.

R12. 9/7/33 “Mrs. [360] will be at …, N.J… We do not think of any other questions than those we sent in our last letter.

“The diagnosis of the first rdg. was, we thought, very good. The trouble was that the instructions for treatment were not clear. Would it not be well at the next rdg. for the recorder to ask questions necessary to make the instructions clear to us? It seems as though all the time and money spent so far had been wasted, but perhaps not, and we are looking for and hoping that instructions in the next rdg. will be so definite that we cannot mistake them, and that Mrs. [360] will receive some relief from present conditions.”

OBSERVATIONS ON MR. CAYCE’S PSYCHIC PHYSICAL READINGS

I confess a certain timidity in discussing the psychic - particularly in connecting the psychic with the physical or with its physical interpretations. Obviously there is such a connection, but insomuch as the psychic functions most actively in sleep, or in a state resembling sleep, it is difficult to approach by our ordinary senses and common language.

To make matters even more discouraging, we know physiologically almost nothing about the very common function of sleep itself; and we get no help from the psychic himself, for he admitedly knows nothing of what happened and his reading is entirely new to him when he returns to the conscious world; of course there is in this, the negative suggestion that the force acting through him is independent of his consciousness and volition; that is, he acts as a passive agent.

Perhaps our training also adds to these several barriers; we are so accustomed to tapping the chest, listening to the heart, testing by chemistry, and examining by microscope and X’Ray that anything which will not submit to this diagnostic 3rd degree has no length, breadth and thickness, is not material and hence is inconsequential.

To those interested in psychic phenomena, these difficulties need not be discouraging. They can find inspiration in the fact that a like condition exists in other fields of human inquiry; the electrical engineer has for a century been directing electricity of chosen power at will - and yet no one yet knows what electricity is. This ignorance being inconvenient he constructs a theory which he hopes will fit into the known facts. If it does not he discards it and tries another. At present he postulates; that all matter is fundamentally electric; composed of atoms which contain a positive center or protone around which is grouped a cluster of negative elements or eletrones. So long as these balance each other all is peace and quiet. However, if one electron is coaxed away by man’s inventions an attempt is made to recover this electron by stealing one from nearby atom: It’s then a case of every atom for himself and the consequent riot is what is known as an electric current.

In the transmission of magnetic energy, light, heat and sound waves, it has also been inconvenient not to know the agent of their transmission. Oxygen and nitrogen and the other known elements of the atmosphere are not the agents, so in our dilemna we invented the ether. Although this ether penetrates all space and all matter, no one has the slightest idea what it is and yet its assumption fills in a void in human knowledge.

Life itself has been pondered over since the days of Eden and yet its nature is as much a mystery as ever. A dead body weighs as much as a living one, yet life itself has gone from it.

Psychical research enjoys, in common with all branches of learning, this privilege of filling in the voids with theories. Without them that enigma of sleep cannot be bridged and the psychic phenomena which take place on its far side cannot be approached.

The subject has always been a fascinating one to me, and the more so during the past ten years when I have had frequent opportunity to examine the physical readings of Mr. Edgar Cayce and also the patients concerned. The many instances in which by psychic means he has revealed physical conditions which have later been verified by physical methods have been impressive. I admit but do not explain this.

Certain thoughts however have resulted from these experiences:

Insomuch as sleep is interpreted between the psychical and the sensorial, perhaps the psychic sense springs into life and activity as our other senses become dormant in repose.

Perhaps one highly endowed with this psychic sense can be compared to a sensitive radio receiver. He can at will adjust and tune himself to the energy - or lack of energy - from a selected source, and receives and records in the readings emittions from this source.

If this is true and the psychic acts as a passive medium, we might denominate this an actual psychic touch or contact.

I offer these thoughts for whatever use they may to those of you interested.

To these remarks I append some random observation, pertinent and impertinent, involving in turn The Readings, The Doctors, The Patient (the body).

The Readings:

I think my earliest impression of a psychic reading was that I was being served a very much scrambled portion of the English language. It seemed that all of the rules of composition had been overlooked. But here and there something was clearly stated and stimulated interest in getting the connection.

Have you ever been reading a column of newspaper and come to a place where the type lines had gotten out of order? It was quite a problem to keep the sense while looking for the line that should be next.

Many of the readings are not in good sequential order. They must be read and reread. Even then frequently there are vagrant statements which seem in no way connected. I have noted frequently that these are fitted in and cleared up by subsequent - or check readings.

And since we have compared our medium to a radio receiver, these facts suggest:

That psychic reception is, like radio reception, variable. That it may have its own problem of static. That strong senders may create interference. That psychic transmission is sometimes good and sometimes not so good.

The Doctors:

From all sources I hear of difficulty in obtaining cooperation of physicians I sympathize with you in this.

The physician has arrived at his present methods of examination only after years of intensive training, study and experience. The system, although not perfect, has been vastly expanded and improved in recent years. It furnishes a wealth of information that is dependable and on which he bases his treatment.

To meet and act alone in the sundry emergencies of life his whole training has taught him independence, self reliance and resourcefulness, and as a consequence he cannot comfortably use another diagnosis as his guide even the diagnosis of another physician.

Your hope of cooperation must rest with the occasional physician who feels that present methods of examination are predominantly physical and neglectful of other aspects of life. Interest and curiosity on the part of these should be cooperative.

The Patient or the Body:

I have had an opportunity to observe the various and varied emotional reactions of the subjects to physical readings: In some there has been a clear understanding that improved health will result when the change of diet, better hygience, emotional control and treatment are carried out as suggested. Some have made a faithful effort to do as directed.

Some, it really seems, look for a cure in the reading itself. That the reading has been a psychic purge by which harmful causes and effects have at once been dissipated and improvement must quickly follow.

Still another group makes a fetish or talisman of the reading. They carry it with them always in the belief or hope that is possesses some inherent power to effect magical or extraordinary results.

Stated as briefly as possible: A physical reading tells what is the trouble and what should be done about it.

Results, after all, depend upon physical action in response to psychic command.
