GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3629].
-
As we find, there are many disturbing conditions as related to the physical forces of this body. In the main these have to do with the incoordination between sympathetic and cerebrospinal system, and these incoordinations are of such natures as to produce rather a series of disorders with the body. These are indicated in the brush end of the cerebrospinal system, or through the lumbar and sacral areas, then in the 6th and 7th dorsal, then in the 3rd cervical.
-
These cause periods when there is dizziness in head, irregularity at other times, with the heart’s activity. Very poor eliminations at times and at others just the opposite; periods of insomnia, conditions when there are reflexes to the organs of the sensory system - blurry-eyed, as it were, things never taste exactly right, and there are periods when even the hearing and speech become disturbed.
-
These, then are incoordinations between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nerve systems in the areas indicated, and the ganglia are the basis of the disturbance.
-
We find that these may be materially aided, but it will be necessary that the body take the time to do this. For there should be the continuous use regularly of the hydrotherapy treatments, until at least twelve to fourteen have been given in the first series. These should include first a Fume Bath, using iodine, that the reflexes produced by absorption to superficial circulation may act as a stimulant to drain or to set up irritating activities for the emunctories in those ganglia along the cerebrospinal system. Then this should be followed by a needle shower, then a Pine Bath. Then give the body a gentle massage with special reference to the areas indicated along the spine, especially the 9th dorsal and the lumbar-sacral area and 3rd cervical; though this would include, of course, a coordinating of all the areas from the 6th dorsal to the 1st cervical.
-
Also the body should be put under the ultra-violet ray for at least two or three minutes with the green glass projected between the light and the body.
-
At least twice during these periods, there should be included a colonic irrigation.
-
Do these - be consistent - keep away from carbonated waters, quantities of fats, and do have better eliminations - and we will have better conditions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Would a change of climate help me in any way and, if so, what climate is recommended? (A) You change often enough! This is not a part of the condition, unless the body accepts same as its own suggestion.
-
(Q) Can the hearing in the right ear be regained? (A) As indicated, all of the senses will be materially aided.
-
(Q) Were hayfever shots in any way responsible for this trouble? (A) Any shots are responsible for most anything? Yes - they are a part of the disorders.
-
(Q) Are the treatments I am now taking helping me? (A) We have indicated that as we find the best. Use your own judgement.
-
(Q) Would giving blood donations affect me adversely? (A) These would not be very good for the one you gave them to, unless there are some corrections made - though they wouldn’t affect you much!
Do these things as indicated, and we will make for better conditions for this body.
- We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 3/14/44 “I took the extra copy of my rdg. to Dr. Reilly and was immediately started on my course of treatments. After the 1st 2 or 3 I started to respond; now, after having taken 10 of the 14 treatments, I can say that I have shown some rather startling improvement. My hearing has gotten considerably better and is no longer subject to the extreme variations.”
R2. 7/18/44 “Toward end of series I suffered a relapse and my hearing fell off considerably…perhaps due to contracting a cold…took another series, when about half way through the series began to feel better & hearing began to pick up…by end of series was feeling considerably improved physically and my hearing had improved.
“The 2nd series ended the 1st of June. Since this time has always been the time of year when I have been troubled with a grass pollen allergy, I decided to spend my vacation in the south where the grass pollen had passed…my ear & hearing seemed to improve further under the 2 wks. in warm sun, etc…when ret’d to N.Y. my hearing was much better than it had been for almost 2 yrs., tho it had not approached normal.
“Since then it has slumped a little altho on the whole it has remained fair.
“During my vacation I had an accident to my nose and went to an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist…it was not as serious as I first believed, but during the treatment the Dr. ran a series of tests upon my hearing in left ear…these tests showed substantially the same results as the tests taken at the Mayo Clinic 2 yrs. ago.”
R3. 7/18/44 “My trouble has been a series of attacks of deafness in my left ear; the seriousness of the attacks is compounded because of the fact that I have never been able to hear from my right ear because of an injury at birth. The difficulty with my left ear was described, by several doctors including those at the Mayo Clinic, as being a perception or nerve deafness; this diagnosis, it was pointed out, was substantiated by mechanical tests or audiograms and showed a perception loss of hearing of approximately 30%.
“Notwithstanding this, there were times when my hearing returned, it seemed, almost to normal; one of these instances was in the summer of 1942. I maintained fair hearing during this period of about 5 mos. before my hearing again suffered a slump.”
R4. 7/11/44 Questions: 1. What is the condition in the inner part of left ear with reference to the nerve of hearing? 2. Would the climate in Cairo, Egypt agree with my ear condition? (“I have been requested to go there on a job in connection with the war.”)

B1. 10/1/43 [3629]‘s letter to EC:
New York, N.Y.
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Arctic Circle Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
My wife explained to me that you had told her it be possible for you to give us a reading during the first week in January; you had talked to her on the long distance telephone on September 27 when she had called you after we had both read and re-read avidly the literature you sent us. She further explained that you would appreciate my giving a more detailed account of our difficulties; this I hope to do in the following paragraphs.
In my own case, as I stated in my letter of September 16, I have been suffering from recurrent deafness for over two years; I have seen innumerable doctors without relief.
An injury at birth deprived me of my hearing in my right ear; I have never, to any conscious knowledge, been able to hear out of it. In 1933 I suffered an onset of Meniere’s syndrome which lasted, with varying intensity, for about five or six years. In 1941 I was prevailed upon to undergo injection treatments for my hayfever. This I did and almost immediately I began suffering from periods of deafness. At first the seizures would be of short duration; gradually they began to get longer.
During the summer of 1941 I ceased the treatments and the seizures disappeared. During the fall of the year I began to become very sensitive to temperature changes, coming down with colds. And with each cold I had a recurrence of the deafness. During the winter of 1941 and 1942 I was again prevailed upon to take the hay fever treatments and again the seizures started. I would obtain relief by inflation treatments, but gradually even they lost their potency.
In the spring of 1942 I went to the Mayo Clinic where they diagnosed my trouble as nerve deafness; this was in contradiction of the previous diagnosis of tubal edema. After receiving histamine, ascorbic acid, and other treatments, I was sent home as being incurable. However, I gave up the hay fever treatments and gradually my hearing returned. I suffered no further seizures all that summer and my old family physician maintained that I was suffering from an ear edema induced by the hay fever injections.
In the fall of 1942 I had several very severe attacks of influenza which again resulted in my having periods of deafness. Again the cycle was maintained with the periods becoming longer. And again the difference of opinion of the several doctors whom I was attending at various times during the period.
At the present time I am in New York to have a well-known surgeon correct and re-mold a prolapsed tube. I have been here five weeks and it now appears that neither the original correction nor the treatments are going to show results. [The next paragraph was used in wife [3696]‘s Background - See 3696-1.]
I am enclosing the application forms which accompanied the literature you sent and a money order for $40.00. This money order will cover the cost of associate memberships for both my wife and me.
I sincerely hope that the above information on our troubles is sufficient for your purposes. And I should also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kindness in securing readings for us as early as January; your recognition of the urgency of our “cases” is sincerely appreciated.
You indicated to my wife over the telephone that I should send this to you personally; that is the reason for my addressing you as I have.
I expect to be returning home very shortly so I have given my home address on the application forms.
Sincerely yours, [3629]

Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
As you requested in your letter of December 31, 1943, I have prepared a list of questions sufficiently far in advance so that you may have them in ample time for the reading. The questions are as follows:
I have been told by at least one doctor that my trouble was a layyrintina edema with accompanying auditory nerve neuritis. Is there any way I can regain any nerve loss in the left ear? 2. What relationship to the dizzy spells I have experienced over a number of years bear on my present ear trouble? 3. Would a change of climate help me in any way and, if so, what climate is recommended? 4. Can the vertigo or dizzy spells be cured and will the removal of this trouble alleviate my deafness? 5. Why, in the past, was relief from previous periods of deafness often accompanied by dizzy spells? 6. I never had any trouble with my hearing in my left ear before I took shots for my hayfever. Were these shots [hayfever] in any way responsible for this trouble? 7. I have not, to the best of my knowledge, been able to hear in my right ear; can the hearing in the right ear be regained? 8. Are the treatments I am now taking helping me? 9. Does the condition in my Eustachian tubes bear upon my trouble in any way? 10. Would giving blood donations affect me adversely? 11. Did the injections of histamine I received some time ago have anything to do with my ear’s clearing and staying clear for four or five months? 12. Why do I suffer periodic slumps and why are these slumps accompanied by ear noises, pressure pains in the back, left part of my skull, and slight dizzy spells? 13. Why do I feel so sluggish in the mornings and why is my hearing always at a low point then? 14. Does my ear trouble have anything to do with a haziness I have been experiencing lately with my right eye? 15. My seizures of deafness have often been accompanied by spells of belching. During the expulsion of air some of the air seems to go up the eustachian tube causing a click in my ear and then a terrific humming sound. Gradually the ear has cleared up and the hearing has been at least partially restored. Can you explain this?
I realize that you might wish to edit these questions since you may feel that some of them will be answered in the reading. All of these questions have been on my mind and I wish to be sure that you had all of them. I have stated them in their order of importance as I see them.
My ear has been troubling me quite a bit lately and I am looking forward very eagerly to the reading. I know that you can help me.
I shall be at the above address at the time of the reading, 10:30 - 11:30 A.M., Saturday, February 5, 1944.
Sincerely, [3629]
