This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 6th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self through sister-in-law, […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.) Harmon Bro, Mrs. [4033]”s sister-in-law and brother-in-law.]
Time of Reading 3:40 to 3:55 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Kentucky.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body, answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [4033].
-
As we find, there are disturbances preventing the normal reactions in the physical, as well as those reflexes in the coordination of the physical and mental. These at times cause a great deal of distress to the body.
-
There are special causes, as we find, from an injury to the coccyx end of the spine; combined with the reflexes causing acute disturbances in the limbs and the activity of same.
-
Then the incoordination produced through these disturbances causes the activity between sympathetic and cerebrospinal systems to be at variance. Thus causing the periods of distress to the whole body. [Sciatica?]
-
There is a lesion from the first segment of the coccyx and this, because of its pressure, gives particular distress to the nerves of the iliac plexus; consequently one of the limbs more than the other, though sympathetically there are distresses in the locomotory center and thus the reactions in both limbs.
-
Then the reflexes to the centers in the lumbar axis and 9th dorsal cause disorders, where there are the distresses between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal systems.
-
While reflecting more upon the reactions through the sympathetic system, this also causes from the 9th dorsal a break with the cerebrospinal centers, which at times causes distress in the organs of the central nerve and blood supply. There will be times when apparently there is the stress in the obtaining or gaining of a deep breath. There will be others when there is a variation, and quite a variation, in the pulsation in the heart; then the organs - as the liver and the kidneys, the kidneys especially - show scant reaction and at others an excess.
-
We find that these may be materially aided if there would be the correction of the segments and their positions as related to the nerve ends that find reflexes in the ileum plexus and at the base of the spine itself.
-
These corrections should be made by one who would be in sympathy with such measures or who would make proper adjustments osteopathically. This would necessitate these areas being relaxed first with wet heat before there is the attempt to correct the position of the segments.
-
There should be sedatives given the body, not necessarily for the periods of pain but for the quieting of the nerves. We find that the compounding of the activities of the bromide of soda, bromides of the varied natures combined with the alkaloids will relieve tension, quiet the body, and with the correction and reducing of the lesions produced in the lumbar axis, 9th dorsal and in the 3rd cervical, we will gradually bring better conditions for the body. Such a combination of bromides may be found in that compound called Bromidia.
-
These osteopathic treatments and corrections we would have twice each week until at least sixteen to eighteen treatments have been given.
-
After there has been the correction osteopathically, we would then use the short wave electrical treatments, for the unifying of the nerve forces especially in the lumbar axis, 9th dorsal and the 3rd cervical.
-
Also the massages that would be given with these treatments will aid in quieting and correcting the coordinations between the nervous systems, thus reducing the tendencies that exist.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What caused the disturbance of the nerve in the top of the leg? (A) As indicated, this is a direct pressure, because it is turned in this area to the opposite limb where there is the greater distress, though both limbs give distress at times.
-
(Q) What causes the congestion through the head? (A) This is sympathetic. The indications are that there is a lack of coordination in reflexes. Thus the pains in the head at times indicating the pressures in the areas given.
-
(Q) Please suggest foods to stress and foods to avoid in the diet. (A) In the diet there should be the stressing of those that are nerve building; such as beef, liver, fish, especially sea food - not fresh water fish. Vegetables that are raw, especially such as water cress, celery, lettuce, carrots should be prepared quite often - in fact, have some of these every day, but prepare most often with gelatin because of the activities that cause the better nerve forces.
The supplying to the system of the short wave electrical forces with the massage will cause coordination of nerve forces in the body.
- (Q) Would you suggest a doctor in Louisville who would be sympathetic to giving these treatments? (A) Any good osteopath, especially of the Kirksville school - or the old Southern school - they are both here.
Do these things and we will bring better conditions for this body.
- We are through with this reading.

(4/6/44 GD’s note at the time of the reading: The following osteopaths we find listed in the American Osteopathic Association Directory of members in Louisville, who are of the Kirksville school and the Southern College of Osteopathy: Dr. Martha E. Garnett, 35 Weissinger-Gaulbert Bldg., Dr. E. W. Patterson, 460 Francis Bldg. Please let us have the name and address of the one you choose.)
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/15/44 Mrs. [4033] wrote thanking EC for the reading. “Will endeavor to follow through with the treatment suggested, and will advise possible results later on.”
R2. 5/27/44 She wrote: “I want you to know how very grateful I am and how truly and sincerely I appreciate your giving me a reading wherein you diagnosed my case so well, as confirmed by the osteopath [Dr. Nora Prather].
“I started taking two treatments a week as soon as I received your reading and am endeavoring to follow your suggestions as nearly as I possibly can do so, and feel that I am getting favorable results. I am much improved and confident I shall continue to do so as time goes on.
“You are undoubtedly doing a wonderful work in carrying on God’s plan in helping suffering humanity, both material and spiritual, and I know you will some day receive your reward.
“I shall continue to let you hear from me as to my progress, and shall ever remember you in my prayers.”
Most sincerely and gratefully yours, [4033]
R3. 6/4/44 She wrote: “So far, the treatments have apparently been favorable and I am hopeful of continued improvement until the full number have been taken, some twelve or thirteen now. They have been according to suggestions with the exception of the wet heat applications prior to any attempt to correct the position of the segments, since she said she was not prepared to do that properly. She also advised me that the short wave electrical machine she has was not in condition right now due to inability to obtain necessary parts or repairs so far. It is possible that I will have to call on Dr. W. E. Dale, Physiotherapist … Bldg., for continuance of treatments. I understood just recently that he had a short wave machine and has been giving electrical treatments of most all kinds for quite a number of years. I hope this change, if necessary, will be satisfactory to you, and would like to inquire the number of such treatments and how often.
“Dr. Prather was anxious to read the book, ‘There is a River’ and advised me it was most interesting indeed, so I am hopeful of further cooperation by her.”
R4. 6/8/44 EC wrote that he would give her a ck. rdg. to ask about the short wave treatments, but: “It would be very well, I think, to keep up the osteopathic treatments, then rest a period while you are taking the short wave treatments
- though they should have gone along together; then take another series from Dr. Prather. Make them possibly once a week instead of twice a week.”
R5. 6/19/44 She verified the ck. physical rdg. appointment, submitting questions for it, saying: “I am endeavoring to follow your suggestions as far as possible consistent with treatment available and shall continue to do so, having experienced quite an improvement as I see it.”
R6. 8/44 She again verified appointment for the ck. physical rdg., repeating questions in re small mole or soft growth on left side of back just below shoulder blade, and in re rectal fissure, saying: “At this time I am pleased to say that material improvement has been shown in my physical condition since treatments by the osteopath as suggested, although at the present time they have been discontinued temporarily or until after your check reading.”
R7. 8/25/44 EC gave her ck. physical reading 4033-2, which was near the last of the readings given by him (only sixteen given after that) before he died on 1/3/45.
R8. See subsequent reports under 4033-2 indicating complete cure.
Background
Background
B1. 4/6/44 Mrs. [4033]‘s husband’s sister was present for the reading, submitting questions in re Mrs. [4033]‘s extreme pain in left leg and hip. She had been hospitalized about five weeks and attended by five different doctors and found no relief. They said it was a nerve disorder. Is at home and feeling some better but still has to use pills for sleeping, also hot water bottle to help relieve pain in the leg. While in the hospital, did not have temperature. [Sciatica?]
