This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 11th day of January, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [418], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. L. B. Cayce, Helene and Ernest W. Zentgraf.]
Time of Reading 11:35 to 11:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Tenn. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have had before.
-
As we find, while improvements have been wonderful, there are at present some discouragements; with the rise of temperature that comes from congestion and the tendency for the coughing to be increased, with pains through the chest and the area in the left lung that has shown the tubercle being encased - FROM this irritation - now shows activity.
-
While this is only a setback, there must be greater precautions taken as to taking cold and going or sitting in drafts, or going about places where there are drafts without the head being properly covered, and open air at night that is not so well. Not that there is not to be constant amount of air in the sleeping quarters or sleeping apartment, but that this shall not blow directly on the body. The better way to ventilate the room would be to have an opening at the lower portion or near the floor and at the upper portion of the room on the opposite side, or near so. This will make for better ventilation and will prevent the draft being ON the body while sleeping.
-
As to the changes we find necessary in the present:
-
Heat up more the brandy and change the quantity you have here, and breathe DEEPER into the lungs, see?
-
Have prepared again the inhalant [as in 418-1] that is to act as the antiseptic that will prevent the reaction or the infection producing irritation in the throat and lungs. Breathe this, when taken, DEEP ENOUGH to go deep into the lungs, as WELL as the fumes from the brandy, see?
-
We would also prepare to take at times, when there is the tendency for the coughing or for too much of the refuses or spittle coming up (while it is well for this to be thrown off, we do not want to IRRITATE by straining; hence this would be taken internally, see?):
-
To 4 ounces of compound SIMPLE syrup (this means simple syrup to which sufficient quantity of alcohol is added to preserve same), add:
Oil of Eucalyptus…8 minims, Rectified Oil of Turp…4 minims, Tincture of Benzoin…15 minims, Rectified Creosote…4 minims.
-
Well that this be shaken together before the does is taken, which would be half a teaspoonful at the dose, see? This will allay the irritation and will not make for congestion in any portion of the system.
-
Follow the diet very carefully; that is, the milk, the egg and brandy or spirits frumenti. All of these are well, and it would be preferable to use the spirits frumenti THAN the beer in the present (that is, the character that has been used is not so good).
-
We would take plenty of the beef juice, small quantities at the time - but keep this near.
-
Not necessary for the body to remain in bed, if it is careful about drafts as we have indicated; for the strength does not gain so well as is necessary to build resistance in the system, when the body is inactive.
-
Do not be alarmed unless the temperature goes ABOVE a hundred, for there must be kept alive all the vitamins in the system.
-
Occasionally, once or twice a week, if there is not the activity of the bowels as they should, eat a cake of yeast!
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/20/34 “We just rec’d your rdg., also your letter a few days ago. We sure appreciate your letters, they are so encouraging they cheer us up so. The doctor has said that if I run any fever I should stay in bed but I didn’t pay any attention to him - he hasn’t seen how well I look. I guess he would be surprised. Everybody says I look so well. If I had listened to the doctor here I would have been dead. I am feeling pretty good this morning. I still cough and spit up. I think I am better, though. You sure did tell me in the last rdg. where my pains were. My mother went to see Miss [243] last sunday a wk. ago - she said for them to take the thermometer away from me, not even let me see it - she told lots more things I can eat. I have been better ever since. I don’t think I have had any temperature much since… I hope next time I write you I will be nearly well. My husband said my inhalant had lost its strength and he didn’t know it [but you did].”
R2. 1/27/34 Husband’s letter: “She has had a cramping in her bowels for some time. She gets sick at her stomach very often and that makes her feel awful bad. She doesn’t have any appetite for what she eats and she feels weaker some times than she does at others. She doesn’t seem to be getting her strength back very fast. Her stomach seems to be bothering her more and making her feel worse than anything else. We give her one night Milk of Magnesia, next night Milk of Bismuth, next night 5 drops of Glyco-Thymoline, and the next night a mild laxative. We don’t know whether to give her a purgative that will work on her liver or not - we thought it might make her too weak. I think if we could get her stomach to stay in good condition she would do lots better. She has the headache often, which I think is caused from her stomach or from being weak. Her tongue is coated, which I think is her liver not acting. Mr. Cayce, we certainly do appreciate your kindness in helping us, and just as soon as I can I am going to pay you for what you are doing, for we certainly do appreciate it.”
R3. 2/13/34 Husband’s letter: “She has been awfully sick for 2 wks. and isn’t very much better now. She took cold and had a hurting in her side and under chest so that she could hardly breathe, but that has all left now. She still runs a fever, around 101 in the evening, which makes her feel nervous and face flushes up. This evening it is 100 1/2 at 3:15 P.M. It gets higher sometimes later on in the evening. She has gotten so she doesn’t want anything to eat. Miss [243] came down Sun. a wk. ago. She recommended a tonic for us to give her for her appetite - Neoferrum, which has iron, manganese, Maltine and Sherry Wine. We have been giving that for a few days but it hasn’t had any effect on her appetite yet. She has gotten pretty weak since she has had this spell and has lost some weight too. She has coughed and spit up lots, and sweated some at night. The hurting she had was mostly on her right side and under her chest. The left side wasn’t bothered with it.”
R4. 2/21/34 “She can’t eat anything for supper except drink a glass of milk. She has a catch sometimes below her chest when she coughs but it doesn’t stay very long. Her stomach still cramps and bothers her a lot. We are still carrying on the treatment except the diet that calls for the egg and milk, and she says she can’t take it. She says she sure wants you to send her a rdg. quick as possible, for that is the only hope that she has of getting well.”
