This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of February, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [418], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis, L. B. and Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 4:15 to 4:25 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Tenn. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have had before. Not so good in some respects. Lost some ground by contraction of fresh cold and the inabilities to make for resistances sufficient in the body to meet the needs in the circulation; tending to make - by the slow activity of the liver, by the upset in digestive area - for strept, and this in the blood itself produces much more severe pains in the lungs themselves.
-
Do not be unduly alarmed as yet from the coughing or from the amount of phlegm that is expectorated. Do not be so mindful of taking the temperature; better keep that away for the while, for this works psychopathically on the body.
-
And if we will use these things, we will find that the strength will be brought back to the body:
-
First it will be necessary for the changing of the inhalant; that is, the brandies, for these were not so good in the first, and they have deteriorated to where they are not as good as they should be. In using same at present, or until there can be some changes made, get a fresh supply of brandy, see - a pint will be sufficient just now. When there is the tendency for coughing, choking up, or the heaviness, pour about a tablespoonful of the brandy into a pint of boiling water and let the body inhale the fumes from this, by putting a cover over the head even, you see, and let the steam, the fumes, be breathed into the nostrils and deep into the lungs, see?
-
As to the matter of diet, prepare all the BEEF juice (not broth, but beef JUICE) that the body may take, and do not have any fats in the meat when the juice is prepared - and cook it DONE, the meat, you see, for an hour and a half to two or three hours; then strain off, but don’t eat the meat - it isn’t good for a dog even! Take the juice in very small quantities. If it is given every thirty minutes, a teaspoonful or so, so much the better. At regular meal times, take the yolk of egg, coddled or boiled, and toast, liver Broiled, not fried), the broths and meat of WILD game - and all the milk the body may well assimilate; if possible, have the milk warm from the animal heat of the cow - but be sure the cow is free from any infectious forces, see? Have the milk tested before it is used for the body. There’s been some taken that hasn’t been so well!
-
Keep the eliminations by the use of oil enemas for the evacuation of the colon, where there’s been the tendency for the accumulation - and that makes for bad conditions in the digestive system, upsetting the stomach sometimes back - because there was some food taken that was not just as fresh as it should have been; but use the enemas in this way and manner:
-
In the first quart and a half of water used, put a level teaspoonful of salt (put this in first) and a heaping teaspoonful of baking soda. Dissolve this.
-
After the evacuation, in the last pint of water, put the Russian White Oil. This will float, to be sure, but it will enter the colon also, if it’s used in the proper way and manner. Keep it stirred as it is used, that there may be the prevention of any forces that would produce irritation or cohesion in the intestinal tract.
-
Do not overtax self, and be mindful that the body is kept warm.
-
When there is any real irritation in the throat, hard breathing, rub rather the lower limbs and the feet with a compound made in this manner:
-
To 2 heaping tablespoonsful of melted mutton suet, add 1/2 teaspoonful spirits of turpentine and 1 level teaspoonful spirits of camphor.
-
Massage this in the knees and in the lower limbs, and ESPECIALLY the bottoms of the feet. And when it is massaged in the bottoms of the feet, either toast them before the fire or heat flannels and wrap the feet in same. This will make for the circulation changing sufficiently.
-
And if there are the proper amounts of the beef juices taken, and the liver juices, and the foods that are blood building, we will build up resistances to this body. Do not use too much sugar, but stick to the blood building foods.
-
If GOOD apple brandy is obtained, to 1/2 pint of brandy add 2 tablespoonsful of strained honey (real honey; this doesn’t mean made from that selected from other quantities; preferably take the honeycomb and sling it, because there isn’t any such thing as making the honeycomb with imitation honey in it!).
-
Then, to 2 ounces of Horehound add 4 ounces of water. Let it stand, and what will be strained off and squeezed out may be put in the brandy and honey solution. Shake it together and take as an expectorant and as a stimuli. Don’t take large quantities of it, but just SIP a little bit of it; that is, a teaspoonful at a time. This may be taken every two, three or four hours.
-
The inhalant will be the stronger for the relief. It’ll get rid of the cold.
-
Do that.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 3/5/34 Husband’s letter: “Thought I would write you about my wife. She is not feeling well at all. She has lost her appetite and in the evening she runs a high fever. It was 103 this evening. Some evenings she is lots hotter than others, and I guess it will run to 105. She is getting weaker and falling off all the time. She has lost all the weight that she had gained. I don’t think that there is any chance for her. I would like for you to write me and tell me just what you think about her. She has been sweating lots and her stomach seems so weak that she can’t take the yolk of an egg without vomiting it up. Do not hesitate to tell me what you think about her, for I am keeping this letter from her. I would like for you to answer quick as possible. We are keeping up the treatment just like you said, but she is going down all the time.”
R2. 3/7/34 We wrote advising that EC was out of town and urged that they reconsider all the details mentioned in the last rdg., but we were putting both Mrs. [418] and her husband on the A.R.E. Prayer Group list, asking that they cooperate in prayer at any or all three daily prayer periods.
R3. 3/15/34 Husband’s letter: “My wife wanted me to drop you a few lines to tell you we are going by the last rdg. Her fever is awfully high in the evening and low in the morning. She has had a hurting right under each arm for 3-4 days and we could not get anything to ease her except a tablet that doped her up. We are doing everything we can and carrying the treatment out in full. We certainly do appreciate what you have done and if you have any more suggestions we will be glad to have them. As I guess you know, I wrote you before this, not letting my wife know it. I hope you have returned and will be glad to hear from you soon. Just write me and let me know what you think about her. We certainly did appreciate the letter we rec’d from your secretary and we certainly pray and hope it is God’s will, with us helping, to restore her back to good health.”
R4. 4/5/34 EC wrote that he had been away from the office nearly a month [in Arizona]: “I will be very glad to try and be of help, if Mrs. [418] feels she would like to have information through this channel again. I think she herself could suggest to you the questions she would like to know.”
R5. 5/20/34 Miss [243]‘s letter: “Mrs. [418] has been mighty sick. Her sister told me they called a doctor from Nashville who said he wouldn’t treat the case as long as she was with her mother. He told [the sister] that they could have had her well from that rdg., had the child been allowed to follow it. I haven’t heard from her for a wk. now, but when they get her away from her mother she will get better.”
R6. 5/25/34 EC’s letter to Miss [243]: “I was quite a bit surprised to know that Mrs. [418]‘s doctor agreed with the rdgs., but have had quite a number of such reports recently
- possibly more in the last month than we have had in any year before… I hope she will be able to follow the information, and be sure to let them know we will be glad to do anything we can to be of help, but there is no use of us giving information and then it being disregarded. If it isn’t worth trying, it isn’t worth the trouble of getting it.”
R7. 7/27/34 EC’s letter to Husband in answer to his card saying that his wife had passed on:
“God, perhaps, in His wisdom, has seen fit to make the future home more desirable for you in taking her at this time. I am sure, however, you may feel that in the Hereafter she still lives. While she may not be in the body that has been so wracked with pain, the soul, the love, that has existed, hasn’t changed one whit.
“Know that we will be very glad to hear from you if we can ever be of service. I appreciate your card letting me know, and know that we are asking God’s peace rest and abide with you always.”
