Date: 3/22/1938 Sex: M Age: 50 ReadingID: 3247
This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of March, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [437], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 4:00 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: We have the body here; this we have had before.
-
As we find, in many ways the general physical forces of the body are very good.
-
There HAS been the effect in the system of INHALING a gas from decomposition of cellulose forces. And these carrying quantities of a character of gas, the body has been affected by same (though not showing outwardly) such as to cause a disturbance in the circulation between the heart, the liver and the lower hepatic circulation.
-
Then, the normal equilibrium in these directions should be brought by the general exercises, and keeping the body- eliminations well in hand - by the use not so much of the cathartic stimuli activities but the correct proportions of green vegetables as well as the physical AND mechanical exercises - AND KEEPING IN THE OPEN!
-
Hence as we find: Occasionally, or once a week, we would have a thorough, deep mechanical or osteopathic manipulation. These would be especially for the activities of the glandular system as related especially to those between the upper portion of the kidney as with the gall duct; or between the adrenals and the activities through the liver, spleen and pancreas. These then would be not only from the dorsal but also through the lower dorsal and lumbar and sacral.
-
Then occasionally have the thorough hydrotherapy treatments; that is, with the Pine Oil Sweats and Rubs; that there may be a stimulation and a coordination between the sympathetic and the deeper circulation, or superficial and deep circulation. DO NOT take electrical treatments - unless it is the LOWEST form of such.
-
Walk or ride IN THE OPEN as often as plausible (and make it so!), especially - of course - the sunshine.
-
In the diet, at least have a raw vegetable in the meals during each day. Such a salad may be composed of any or all of these: tomatoes, lettuce, celery, onions, radish, leeks, or mustard and the like; or slaw or celery cabbage, or any or all of these.
-
Do not eat too much meats; fish, fowl and lamb are preferable.
-
To be sure, the activities that have caused these disturbances arise not then from any condition which has as yet localized itself or produced a source of local infection; and for a neuritic or arthritic condition this must be the case. For arthritis and neuritis are RESULTS, or they are EFFECTS AND NOT CAUSES of conditions.
-
And these disturbances will be dissipated if there are those adjustments and exercises and precautions followed as to the diet, as indicated; we will find that the body will respond, and those conditions produced by the inhalation and the effect upon the digestive system of those conditions causing this will be dissipated.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What doctor in New York would you advise to follow these suggestions? (A) As we find, Dobbins AND Reilly [Frank P. Dobbins, D.O.; Harold J. Reilly, Ph.T]. Each of these, of course - not just either, but BOTH, see? in their individual spheres of treatments.
-
(Q) What caused the pain in left shoulder and arm of 2 hours duration? (A) As has been indicated, the effects from inhalation of gases from cellulose; and this in the form of such that it was decomposing. And this combined with poisons in system produced the condition that became as a REFLEX in the circulatory forces between heart, liver, kidneys; finding its focal point in that area about the hand’s breadth from the secondary cardiac - left shoulder here.
Do these things and we will bring the better forces for this body, [437].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is raw cauliflower beneficial as a raw vegetable? (A) If it is THOROUGHLY masticated, it is well to occasionally take same. The reactions from this are very good, if it is THOROUGHLY masticated; but it’s hard to digest when not!
-
(Q) Any other advice for the body at this time? (A) Do these.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 3/29/38 Letter:
Dear Judge,
“I have your letter of the 24th and the first paragraph of the reading more or less amazes me.
“During the years from 1914 to 1924 I was confined for a great many hours every day in a film plant. As you know, motion picture film has a nitro-cellulose base. Although the plant that I was in was air-conditioned throughout, it is possible that I may have inhaled a great quantity of gas from the decomposition of cellulose as all great quantities of celluloid throw off these fumes.
“What is difficult for me to understand, however, is that I have been out of the plant since 1924 and have felt no ill effects and it seems still more surprising to me that the result of the inhalation of these gases would manifest itself fourteen years later in the manner that I now complain of.
“I have had another examination in New York and the heart specialist can tell me nothing as everything seems to be about normal, so I am going to proceed with Dobbins and Reilly and will advise you.”
R2. 3/31/38 EC’s letter: “Thanks for yours of 29th, am sure many possibly every one would tell you that such as suggested in your reading could not possibly happen. Yet with the facts before you as you have them, couldn’t be - but surely is.
“The fact that you have been away from the experience for years would seem that couldn’t possibly have been cause, but evidently what is once builded in the system sooner or later finds expression. The real proof will be by following the suggestion, there is not a return of the trouble, that will be the real proof after all. Will be interesting too to see what Dr. Dobbins says about it all.
“Thank you very much for writing me, am just hoping the suggestion will remove all traces of the after effects of the experience, what ever may have caused it. Of course knew you were associated in pictures - but have never thought of you or known any thing but as an office man - and never dreamed even that you were in position that you might have inhaled the fumes of the film themselves.”
R3. 4/2/38 Son [949]‘s letter: “Dad wrote you about his last rdg. and I saw your answer. He has been going to Dr. Dobbins and hasn’t been complaining since.”
R4. 4/28/38 Mr. [437] sent another generous contribution to EC’s work.
R5. 11/23/38 See 257-202, Par. 34-A in re proper approach to Mr. [437] and others to “get funds for EC and the work.”
R6. See subsequent rdgs. in the [437] series on Business and Mental-Spiritual affairs.
R7. 8/26/60 Letter to GD, reporting on 5501-1:
“You can do something for me if you will. What have you, if anything, in the records regarding ATOMIDINE? Just what is it? What are the component parts? Where can it be had? I have been trying for years to catch up with it but have never had any success.
“My health seems good and I have no complaints. My next birthday in January will be my 73rd, so under the circumstances I am happy to report that I am as well as one can expect to be and extremely fortunate and grateful that such is the case.
“Hope this finds you well and my best to you and yours,”
Sincerely, [437]

B2. 2/17/38 Report:
Stanley W. Imerman, M.D. 802 Taft Building Hollywood, California
Film #773 - [Mr. [437]].
SIX FOOT STEREOSCOPIC X RAY FILMS OF THE CHEST reveal that the lung fields are clear. Both costophrenic angles are clear, and the apices are normal. The heart borders are within normal limits. The aortic arch is not widened. The hilar markings appear normal. The introlobar pleura is thickened on the right side, giving evidence of an old pleurisy.
FLOUROSCOPY OF THE CHEST revealed lung fields to be clear as above. The heart beats were normal. The aortic arch did not appear widened. The retro-costal space is normal and appeared distinctly on inhalation. Both costophrenic angles are clear on inhalation.
CONCLUSION: X-ray examination of the chest shows insufficient evidence of pathological change to be of Roetgen diagnostic value.
B3. 2/18/38 Dr. Stanley W. Imerman’s letter to EC:
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
The following is a report of history and physical examination of the present illness of Mr. [437], of the … Hotel, …, California.
Chief Complaint: Pain in left shoulder and arm of two hours duration.
Present illness: Patient states that while in a conference about two hours previous to this examination, he was seized with a severe attack of acute pain in the region of his neck, left shoulder and arm extending over his chest anteriorly. (Pre-cardial area). Pain was sharp and increasing in intensity and was so severe that Patient went to bed. Pain radiated down his left arm to his finger-tips and he states that has left hand became numb. On arrival home, Mrs. [his wife] […] states that Patient was very pale.
Past History: Patient does not give a history of having any previous attacks.
Physical Examination: Temperature 99.2, Pulse 88, Respiration 20, Blood Pressure 130/90.
Patient’s color was good. He did not appear cyanotic or pale. He was not in actual pain during this examination. The left upper extremity was cold and the right warm.
Head: Negative, except for diminished hearing in left ear.
Chest: Heart appeared within normal limits and the tones were of good quality and regular.
Lungs: Appear normal. No increased dullness present. Breath sounds were normal. Fremitus normal.
Abdomen: Negative. No tenderness. Patient was not distended.
The examination on the following morning, February 17, 1938, was as above with the exception of the blood pressure, which was reduced to 110/80. There was no pain in the left arm or shoulder.
Laboratory findings: White Blood Count 9,400, Differential count normal. Red Blood Count 5,300,000. Temperature 98, Pulse 80, Respiration 20.
It is my impression that even though the laboratory findings and the physical examination was normal, that with the above history and the cardiographic findings, the Patient should exercise a moderate amount of precaution at least for the next week or so and that the E.K.G. be repeated in about ten days or two weeks. Cervical spine and left shoulder joint should be x-rayed for arthritis.
Very truly yours, (signed) Stanley W. Imerman, M.D. [SWI:es]
