This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of May, 1942, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [459], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 3:45 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.J.

1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [459], … Rd., …, N.J., [GD’s note: At 4:45 P.M. a wire was rec’d from Mrs. [459], sent at 2:56 P.M. saying she would be at ”… Ave., …, N.Y. until 3:45 and … St., …, N.Y. until six.” Evidently EC gave the rdg. from her ‘vibrations’ in her N.J. home.] who seeks information, advice and guidance as to her health, her mental and material affairs in relation to self and children. You will answer the questions she submits, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind, [459]; those conditions respecting the physical, mental and material welfare of self and children. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) What is the present physical condition of my body? [See 959-11 on 1/17/41.] (A) Very good in most respects. Precautions must be taken as to those changes being wrought in the general physical forces. [Menopause?] But the gradual adjustments are very good.

4. (Q) Any special treatment I should have, or that I should follow at this time? (A) Only those precautions for such periods.

5. (Q) What should the summer program be for [1856], [2444] and myself? (A) This, as we find, would depend upon the later developments that are to be expected. If there is the choice of self as respecting connection or association with a camp, keep [2444] with the body. If there is the decision of self to become engaged in the activities as may be further carried on in association with brother [257] in the furniture, keep [2444] with the body.

If there are the activities practical, with the aid of [1856], with the service to be rendered, these would be better for the body than other associations or connections.

6. (Q) Where should they attend university? (A) This should be the regular outcome that is prescribed in the courses that are being taken.

7. (Q) Mrs. Joseph Gorfinkle, owner of Camp Birch Crest and Cedar Crest camp in Maine, would like for us to associate with her. [See 459-2 on 9/6/30 mentioning same connection.] A former Rdg. said Camp at certain periods. Would you advise this? (A) This will be a very slow process or activity at this special season. But as for a rest period, this might be a very good connection; not any amount of moneys made from same, to amount to anything.

8. (Q) Would it be advisable for [1856] to work at Jewish Theological Seminary at N.Y. or Stephen Wise Institute, N.Y.? (A) The Theological Seminary.

9. (Q) The following rabbis have designated an interest in [1856]. I would like to associate myself in the future with the temple that he is so destined to assist. Please advise me which one, and in what capacity: Rabbi Rosenblum, Temple Israel, N.Y.C. [Rabbi Wm. F. Rosenblum. See 459-14, Par. R1.] (A) (Interrupting) This as we find would be the most advisable, and those associations and activities here would be the more satisfactory than ANY or either of the others. [Other Rabbis mentioned in [459]‘s question, not allowed to be named in Rdg: Rabbi Goldenson, Temple Emanuel, N.Y.C.; Rabbi Samuel H. Goldenson; Rabbi Scharkman, New Rochelle, N.Y.C; Rabbi Marius Ranson, Temple Sharey Tefilo, East Orange, N.J.] While there might be a great deal of sentiment in association with Rabbi Ranson and the work there, we find that with Temple Israel, with Rosenblum, would be the better of ANY of those. As to the type, this would depend upon the manner or the development; but that as to the young people’s work and its connection with the universal affairs to which there should be the lending of self, and building of self in those directions would be the better or greater channel for activities.

10. (Q) Should I make connections with firms and carry out Home Furnishings or Ammunition at …, West Va., with my brother [257]? (A) This for the time being, or for the next eighteen months, should be the better association; for later there would be those connections in the same associations that would be in the decorative - or in the furniture and of same.

11. (Q) Any suggestions for good and welfare in the assistance of humanity by us three? [[459], [1856] & [2444]] (A) In following those lines that have been indicated, either as to those associations with camp or in the activity of either of the children through the periods, and of this special season keep the [17 yr.] daughter [2444] with the body in WHATEVER service or activity is determined.

F. Rosenblum of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, representing the Reform Jewish faith, says, ‘It is a maxim of Judaism that one must do everything humanly possible to prolong a life.’ The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada has taken no official position on the subject.”

R2. 5/29/42 “I’ve been trying to get a minute to write to you… [She went into detail about nursing her expectant sister-in-law, wife of brother [4162], etc.]… I don’t know why [2444] should remain with me, only that she has had some ardent admirers in Cincinnati in the pre-med field and in the Hebrew Union College they are exempt. However, [1856] is an ROTC and was made a Corporal - the only boy at HUC to enlist, so he caused quite a sensation the first time he wore his uniform at HUC, about the time when a Jewish army was talked of. He believes in protecting Palestine only under the American flag.

“The rdg. was very definite on Rabbi Wm. F. Rosenblum. Now I’ll tell you what happened. He promised Mother [325] that he would do for [1856] what Rabbi Rosenaw of Baltimore did for him. He sponsored Rosenblum who was an orphan and Rosenblum landed at Temple Israel in N.Y. which is a very fine pulpit. Mother [325] belonged there. Rosenblum performed [1856]‘s confirmation and married my sisters [460] and [563], and he has taken quite an interest in [1856], as he attended his Sunday School when we went to N.Y.”

R3. 10/23/42 “Well, here we are in Cincinnati again, [2444] and [1856] at college here, and I am wondering what part of the civilian defense that I could get registered in adequately…

“[2444] is carrying out your sayings, that little heart-breaker. I have my hands full with her. She has a social calendar that always seems to terminate into a ‘steady’ - to keep her down to her 5 subjects at college is a task. She says the young folks are stupid to marry now, knowing that the boys have to go over, so I am reaping a little of the harvest.

“[1856] never looks at a girl - he will do like Edgar Evans [meet a girl and marry all of a sudden]…

“I guess I’ll close this rambling but I did want you to know that [1856] fulfilled the stepping stone of a rdg. given before he was born [See 459-1 Background], when he went to his first call. Now you have something to fulfill [with your new grandson, Chas. Thos. Taylor Cayce]. I am to be a Ruth.

Wasn’t it strange the rdg. before I was married gave the prophecy, and to think I was married just nine years [when [4159] died] and Ruth was married nine years. I’d love to have a copy of that rdg. I have them all from the ‘home school’ on, but I’d love to see the one before I was married. I was to marry a man, not a lawyer but one who had to do with making laws. According to our religion the Rabbi was the judge in the making of our history.”

R4. 10/31/42 EC’s ltr.: “Thanks, more than I know how to tell you, for yours of the 23rd. It gives me something of the shivers to hear and know something that has been given so long ago in a rdg. is working out just as given. And when it has so much to do with people’s thought and activity toward God, well, can’t help but have the creeps. Know you are proud of [1856], that is putting it so mildly I know, but it is a real honor and a privilege to be even acquainted with him. And to feel that I may have had some influence in his selecting his work is a real pleasure in spirit. Am glad for him, and for the call to have come as you say from the people in the State where his father [4159] had his first charge is really marvelous. I wish we had a copy of the rdg. you refer to [See 459-1 Background], but you will recall that [257] wrote those off in longhand and hoped to get typewritten copies, but have never gotten them, even for our files. So we only have the recent ones.

“Wish to thank [1856] and you many, many times for his contribution to the help of the Ass’n. Certainly will put his father’s name on the list of the contributors to the welfare of the Ass’n.”

R5. 4/30/43 “I took the course in home furnishings or interior decoration at University of Cincinnati - made an A. Ready to work but furniture is ‘frozen.’”

R7. 4/29/44 EC’s ltr.:

“Thanks a lot for yours of the 19th.

“[257] spent the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd with us. He came down with a friend of his from New York. Was certainly glad to see him. He is looking fine and seems to be doing alright for himself. I was sorry that we were not able to work in a few questions side-ways, but we have been so busy, and when you have promised people, you feel like you have to try at least to fill the promise, just as much as your strength will permit.

“We have been going pretty heavy, in fact, so fast that although Miss Gladys has an assistant [Jeanette Fitch], we have had to layoff from the readings practically all of this week to let them catch up with transcribing what we have gotten. This is very unsatisfactory, and I know a lot of people are going to be disappointed, for it means about five to six every day and when we put off their reading, it means six months to a year to wait before we can get to them again. You know this is not satisfactory where so many emergencies come up, and so many calls and telegrams and letters come in asking us to do this or that, and of course we are anxious to do it, but we can’t. Possibly I am not a very good manager, and help is a bad, bad problem. You know we always did have trouble in getting people who could write down what was said during the time of the readings.

“It is certainly mighty nice to hear from you again, and I can easily visualize your remembering us now and then.

“I have heard from your friends, Dr. and Mrs. [Charles] Diserens [He is a psychologist at Univ. of Cincinnati]. We will do the very best we can, but as I said, we are about twelve months in advance with out appointments, which makes it bad on those who are anxious for something right now.

“Appreciate you writing me about [1856] and [2444]. Of course I am just as anxious and just as sure of their abilities as you are. I know from forty or more years of experience, the readings are not far wrong, and when the information says people can apply themselves, and then goes ahead and says they will apply themselves, they are pretty sure to make good. Don’t know as I will live to see it, but some day, all of those who have been acquainted with [1856], will be proud of the fact that they were even acquainted with him. That is the way I feel about it. [2444] is just as efficient. There is a question mark about whether she lets something else come in, according to the reading, but her child will be better known than any of those in the rest of your family, don’t care which one we are speaking of.

“Wish we could get in some work for your friends real soon, but just how we will do this, I don’t know right now but we will do the best we can. You can rest assured of that.

“We hear from Edgar Evans and Hugh Lynn pretty regularly. Hugh Lynn is in England in special service work. Edgar Evans is in Trinidad in the signal corps. Both of them have sons, as you know. Hugh Lynn’s son, Charles Thomas (although everyone calls him Tommie) is one of the cutest kids you ever saw. He is about nineteen months old, and wears an age four suit I think. Edgar Evans’ boy is about ten months old. He is big, fat, healthy and more quiet. Each of them are very much like their dads, but they are both beautiful children. I wish you could see them.

“Gertrude is fairly well. She does most of the work around here. She does all the running around in the car. Of course the mail is so heavy now we have to send it to the postoffice. She has to go to the bank everyday, and takes Sally, Hugh Lynn’s wife, who lives here, to the grocery store every day.

“Miss Gladys hasn’t been feeling very well, but is too busy for comfort for anybody.

“Thank you a lot, and let us hear from you. Thanks for remembering our work here. If it wasn’t remembered by those of our friends who think something of us, we would be in tough sledding.

R8. 8/29/44 EC’s letter: “I am leaving tomorrow, with Gertrude, and will be where, possibly, no one will know me, and where I can get to a doctor at not too much trouble. An out of the way place, seemingly, but a nice little town, and a nice hotel. [Patrick Henry Hotel, Roanoke, Va.]

R9. 8/20/45 Her ltr. to GD: “His name will go down in history as the greatest living character in history in psychic phenomena… I’ve just been on the decline mentally [since EC’s death] - then suddenly I decided the house was on fire and I was running away from it. So I started back to college. I joined the Psychology Dept. of Teacher’s College as a student, taking 3 graduate courses. This was an inspiration due to dear Mr. Cayce’s death - I said, ‘I’m going to tell the world about him.’ But I must know the theory of psychology to do it, be able to express my views in psychological terms. So I took Educational Psychology and also School Administration having to do with the ‘teacher’ - New Psychology of Personality…

“Gee! No matter if their earthly existence (Edgar and Gertrude’s) could have been 200 yrs. it would not have been long enough… I’ve been in a daze since I heard of their death.”

R10. 7/14/65 Brother [257]‘s report: “[459] died 2 yrs. ago [at 67 yrs. of age]. She was ill 6-8 months. An internal thing was going on for 2-3 yrs. - couldn’t get her to reduce her weight - doctors couldn’t get into the rectal situation. She died of cancer of the uterus.”
