GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures, answering the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [464].
-
There are some improvements, yet not so good in the abilities for activities, or for the body to gain strength.
-
As we find, we would massage into the lumbar and sacral areas an equal combination (added in the order named) of Mutton Suet, Spirits of Turpentine and Spirits of Camphor; or dip cloths or flannels in same and apply, with electric heat over same. This as we find would be beneficial, when there is the acute pain.
-
Also we find that a little Watermelon Seed Tea, - not too much, - would help to clarify and make for better activity of the kidneys, without too great a strain or stress on same. Because it tends to make for too frequent activity for the time being should not be alarming, provided it is purified. The quantity and proportions would be as follows: Crush or cut about a tablespoonful of Watermelon Seed, - pour about a quart of boiling water over these and allow to stand for thirty minutes to an hour. Then take this, about three- quarters of a glass or tumbler of it at a time, - and take it once or twice a day, dependent upon the reactions of same.
-
Beware of fats or sugars in the diet.
-
The Jerusalem artichoke, as we have indicated [EC had written her to use Jerusalem artichokes but she had indicated they were out of season and hard to get.], would be MOST beneficial, as it will aid in the activity of the upper hepatic with the activity through the kidneys.
-
Do those.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through with this Reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/30/39 Daughter [2144]‘s letter: “There were no beneficial results from the watermelon seed or the artichokes, as they are out of season and I could only get some shriveled up ones, that were not very fresh. Mother does not improve any at all. Just the same, all of the time, still unable to turn on her side, without crying with pain. And to make matters worse, my father was let out from the store, so his working days are over. It keeps me busy, going to work every day and then having to wait on Mother at night and do housework besides.”
R2. 6/10/39 “We most assuredly would appreciate a ck. rdg. if it could throw some light on Mama’s condition, for we are at our wits’ end to know the cause of the trouble, so we could go about doctoring her with some intelligence…the last doctor we had just simply washed his hands of her trouble after trying all he knew about it. He gave her some tablets to flush the kidneys and bladder out by drinking 8 oz. of water every hour and he made 3 urinal examinations and could find nothing wrong. He expected to find sugar or albumin, and he asked her about a discharge but there is none. So he suggested that she try and sit up, after her telling him it was impossible for her to do so, without being in agony. So the irritation goes right on in spite of all tr., so we came to the conclusion there must be some foreign matter in the bladder, so we looked up gravel in the medical part of Dr. Chase’s recipe book, and saw that the symptoms corresponded with those of Mama’s case. So she just finished a glass of smartweed tea with gin in it, that I fixed for her. It is supposed to move any gravel, 12 hrs. after taking it… There was no reaction from the watermelon seed. The bladder has to be kept irrigated or the pain is awful. I even bought a watermelon for her. We tried Harlem oil, 4 drops in jelly
- no results. We tried Buchu leaves as a tea, twice a day, no results. We have tried everything but whiskey, and still the soreness remains, like knives sticking into the flesh, is the way she describes it. Does she have gravel or stones? Can you give us a definite answer as to this bladder condition, and cure?”
