GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes.
-
As we find, the body continues to be greatly disturbed by those conditions which exist as related to the kidneys and to the activity of the SEDIMENT in the bladder.
-
These cause a great deal of excruciating pain, whenever the body attempts to move a great deal or to stand, as well as general disturbance to the whole equilibrium of the body.
-
Weakness continues, of course, and continues to be more and more disturbing to the body.
-
As we find, we would apply over the bladder area, or close to the lower portion of the abdomen, as well as across the kidney area in the lower portion of the dorsal area, the poultices made from Raw Beet Tops. These should be mashed or bruised, and applied between gauze. Have them at least half an inch thick and of sufficient breadth and length to cover the areas indicated. The leaves would be bruised first, you see, and then boiling water poured over same - in a crock or enamel container (not tin or metal), - and then applied between the gauze as indicated. Change these at least three to four times during an evening, - applying them for three to four hours, then, in an evening and night - letting each application remain so long as it brings some relief, - that is, until there is the discoloration considerably - or for thirty to sixty minutes. The beet tops are to be RAW, to be sure, - not cooked.
-
During the same period we would apply across the ABDOMEN a weak solution of Turpentine, - or the proportions of two tablespoonsful of Spirits of Turpentine to a gallon of water, and then cloths wrung out of this and applied across the abdomen. This is to take out the soreness. Do not do too much rubbing over this area.
-
But following the Beet Poultices, we would have a gentle massage with an equal combination of Mutton Suet, Turpentine and Camphor, - along the areas where the Beet Poultices have been applied.
-
The diets shall necessarily be more of liquids. The beef juices will be the most strengthening, as would be the use of white or light wines for the body.
-
These activities we would keep until there has been a dissipation sufficiently of the irritation, as well as the sediment or small stones, so that there may be relief and not so much severe pain with the attempt for the activity of the bladder or kidneys, - and until the general sediment indicated in the area has been reduced.
-
Do these, and we will bring easier forces for this body, [464].

R1. 6/28/39 Ltr.:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
The Reading arrived safely. I don’t think you ought to attempt to give a reading when you are overtired. They are not satisfactory to yourself or to the one you are giving the Reading to. I don’t want to be unkind but the Reading was too much like mental telegraphy than a genuine psychic reading. I am not blaming you for this for I do know that it requires something mighty fine to give a Reading in the first place and when you are overtired and worried or nervous you cannot commune with the spirit, or force, whatever it is to do justice. I was so anxious to know the cause of my trouble, the cause of that acute pain that keeps me a prisoner in bed while the rest of my body is getting weaker and I am no nearer getting up and around than I was 3 months ago. I have had 4 doctors besides the Readings and not one of them seemed to ever have had a case like it or know what to do or what it is. It is very discouraging and besides this illness, I have had many vexatious things happen to upset me. Maybe they are just little things but I can’t take it anymore. I could close my eyes and be no more. To see this letter one might say, “Well this letter doesn’t look like one sick in bed.” No I am not sick like that with fever and chills or any sickly sickness you might say. Just a few knives sticking into me in the wrong place and that is plenty.
[Husband] was let out of … they said if business picked up they would have him come in again in the fall. But that was only salve to their conscience, but […] is getting too old to go out every day in all kinds of weather especially in the winter when the streets would be covered with ice. I was always worried over that. Old age is one thing we have to face. I don’t feel that I have any right to continue a correspondence with you folks. Now that the Readings are over I want you to know that I appreciate your many kindnesses in the past and things done that are not paid for. When […] worked in … he got $16.00 a week paid to us a day car fare and lunches out of that too, so you see how little I had to do with. We barely got by.
Kind regards to all, Mrs. [464]
R2. 7/3/39 EC’s letter: Dear Mrs. [464] -
Have yours of the 28th - am sorry to hear you are not feeling any better, and that the suggestions in the reading brought no relief from the pain and misery. That the suggestion came at the time we were so busy with the Congress was too bad, yet should not when given fail to bring some help if applied as suggested - there have been many that it has evidently brought help for - that were given at about the same time if am to believe the reports - of course if you do not care to write any more that is alright - but certainly would never wish you to feel that I keep up the correspondence in the hopes of getting a request for a reading from you, am not built that way - have written because have enjoyed your correspondence and have told you often you have been a real help at time when needed just what you expressed in your letters, and certainly not for hope of gain in any way. Am sure you don’t feel much like writing letters while you are feeling so badly, but hope that will soon pass off now and you will be feeling a lot better - seems too bad that they should have let Mr. […] off at the store - for as have told you am sure in my early life felt so closely connected with that store owing to the close association with some of its representatives - but possibly will be best for all in one way or another - if you worried about his going and coming - and some way will be provided for the way to carry on - it is discouraging to grow old - and feel quite old at times - saw our baby boy graduate a few weeks ago - makes me feel old to see him through school - and doesn’t look as if will be easy for him to get work - as he is supposed to be a specialized man - yet that field is full also.
Well hope you soon feel much better - give my regards to all and write again when you feel like it, won’t you. With regards from all here
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R3. 7/28/39 “I am still in bed, much to my disgust. That awful pain when I move is sapping my vitality… Doctor came and said I would have to make myself get up and walk… I tried getting up every day but the pain was so severe that I quit, and I suffered so long afterwards with it. However, I will try again…I am getting sore and lame from inactivity, and my folks are all ready to throw me out…
“Just as soon as [youngest daughter] and husband heard that [Husband] was let out, they moved back home to help us, so we have help…they now pay the running expenses here instead of rent. It seems so queer to me not to have any money coming in, for I have always had [Husband]‘s pay to do with, but to be without any money burns me up…
“Do you know what that scoundrel [Husband] said to me? and let me tell you he is one bad egg. He said ‘I’m going to get a job. Do you think I am going to sit around here all the time doing nothing like you are, lying in bed all the time doing nothing?’ And here I have pieced 2 quilts for the girls. Did he get his head snapped off, just in the way wives know how to do it, and what all he did on his vacation was plenty, and just as [daughter] said, he acted just like the cat that swallowed the canary. So smug.
“I can’t write much of any interest to you because all I know or see is from the bed, and what news the family bring in, I could make up a lot of stuff and tell you…
“I still have much faith in your work, believe it or not. I wish that bladder trouble would leave me. I am going to take to drink.
“We are going to have stuffed white fish for supper. I am hungry all the time and ready to eat. I love dressing, don’t care much for fish, though [daughter] fixes up quite a few fish dodges for us.
“I wish something lovely would happen, something big and worth while. Did you ever feel that way?”
R4. 8/1/39 EC’s letter: “Do hope you are soon feeling a lot better. Still feel if you could, even in this hot weather, bake that Mutton Tallow-Turpentine-Camphor in your back, over the bladder area, you would get relief - unless something is growing there, and it should halt even that.”
R5. 8/10/39 “I am better. I get up and walk around the house now. Knees and ankles very painful. I hope to get downstairs very soon now. [Daughter] is in the hospital with appendicitis… I guess you didn’t understand my last letter. I should have told you I was only kidding about [Husband]. He and I always are handing each other slams and digs…
“I have been upstairs in my bedroom since last Feb. I sit at the window now and look down on my garden. There is nothing in it but hardy phlox. [Husband] is very lonesome with nothing to do, and there would be plenty to take up his time on a farm. He could look after the poultry… I wish we could all go on a farm, then I would have all the flowers I want…
“I must close now. The doctor likes me to walk around as much as possible, but I am not very good at it yet, although he thinks I am doing fine.”
R6. 9/1/39 “I am not improving very fast. I look as if I had been shot at and missed. It is hard for me to get around. My knees and ankles are still sore and painful, and my head is woozy.”
R7. 10/12/39 “My blood pressure is up and I am crabby… I would say that the pus that is draining out from that old sore bladder is awful. I am just like a rotten apple, rotten all the way through. I wonder what keeps me alive.”

B2. 6/10/39 Daughter [2144] submitted questions: “We have tried everything for this bladder condition and still the soreness remains, like knives sticking into the flesh, is the way she describes it…the doctor made 3 urinal examinations and could find nothing wrong… The bladder has to be kept irrigated or the pain is awful… Does she have gravel or stones? What can be done for relief? Can you give us a definite answer as to this bladder condition, and cure?”
