EC: Yes, we have the body here. Now, the abnormal conditions as we find in this body here have to do with the functioning of the organs and the reflex conditions produced by the inability of these organs to function thru their proper channels and the effect it has on the muscular forces in the body rather than organic conditions. Yet we find reflexly many portions of the body affected by this condition. Now, these are the conditions as we find in this body.
-
First, in the blood supplying forces in the body itself, we find it deficient in its rebuilding properties. It carries an insufficient amount of rebuilding cellular forces to give the proper incentive to all cellular units throughout the system, so that we find portions of the body have become anaemitized, not anaemic, but an anaemitized condition existing in certain portions of the body. This especially do we find through some portions of the trunk portion of the body, it also shows through the extremities, and in the lack of fat throughout the system. This condition is being produced by the condition existing in the hepatic circulation, the condition of the liver and especially the condition of the spleen and its action over the body, causing contraction of certain portions of the body. This is caused by a deficiency of certain properties in the blood to add rebuilding forces. Reflexly this causes the muscles and nerves to be contracted in an improper way, or in an abnormal way in this body. The blood being deficient in red blood cells is fairly well balanced for the condition thru the white cells, being of a normal pressure for the conditions existing in the system, but we find the action of the pulmonaries at the time of this contraction through the spleen forces produces a fast pulsation, yet the pressure of the blood is not above normal, often after this condition sinking below normal.
-
In the nerve forces of the body, the body is well balanced for the conditions existing in the system, yet with the incentives as carried by the circulation through certain portions of the body along the pneumogastric, the solar plexus and the ganglia governing the action of the spleen with the circulation, they have become over taut, they produce a contraction of the muscles governing this portion of the body and produce not a nerve condition, but a condition of the blood supply affected by the nerve forces in the body along this portion of the body. The functioning of the organs themselves we find in the brain forces, the cerebro-spinal forces, or the head the seat of the brain forces, very good. The body is well balanced through the brain forces. The action of the forces through the throat, through the larynx are good, only at times we have a reflex condition, which causes a dryness of the throat, a tendency to swallow often, but this is produced reflexly through the circulation and by calls on the emunctories to discharge the lymph to those parts to be assisted.
-
The functioning of the stomach itself is not a normal condition. Thru the action of the spleen we have a contraction of the stomach and across the diaphragm producing a smothering of the lungs, the lungs seem choked, but the condition is produced through the spleen and stomach and is not organic. The contraction of the muscular forces through the blood supply produces the smothering spells to the body. The action of the duodenum on the digestive forces has been hindered by the anaemitized condition, by the lack of forces to be given to the chyle to produce proper nutrition to the system to rebuild itself in proper form. The liver is enlarged through the right lobe and hardened through the left and we find the functioning of this organ is impaired by reflex conditions. The seat of this trouble comes from a sub-normal nerve force. That is, the body has had to stand long on its feet at the time until we produced a deadened sensation to all of the nerve forces, the locomotors and the solar plexus. These supplying more nerve forces and blood to the lower portions of the body than to the upper, and we have produced lesions at the 9th and 12th dorsals. This in turn produces a deadened, dry sensation over the body, the leaden weight, as it were, to the feet, and the lack of energy to produce locomotion throughout any part of the body. We have been treated for torpid liver through the intestinal tract, all of which have been dormant, but this was not the seat of the trouble, as these are reflex conditions. The liver has become enlarged or engorged, not to excess, but sufficient to produce the contraction of the nerves and muscular forces to produce the effect to the diaphragm and the lower portions of the lungs. The functioning of the kidneys is very good, except when we have a reflex condition and then we find an over discharge of secretions. The body is not always sick, but is always tired.
-
To relieve, to bring about a normal condition to this body, will be to reach the system through that which will bring equilibrium to all portions that are affected and reach the seat of the trouble. The best way to reach this will be the longest way, but will be the surest way, and will be more effective to this body here. It must be by little medicine and a great deal of exercise of the proper sort to the body - diet, little medicine and exercise is what we need in this body. Exercises which bring into action those muscles that have been so long misused rather that unused and to add, by taking into the system, properties to the blood and nerve forces to rebuild throughout the system. The medicinal properties that will be taken into the system will act on these forces in the proper way. They will be taken three times each week. Take this into the system:
Senna…3 grains, Licorice…1 grain, Cascara Sagrada…1 grain, Dover’s Powders…1 grain. This is a dose.
-
The exercise to be taken by the body must begin with the hip exercises as would be taken by the setting up exercises of the army as it were. With the hands on the hips, the body erect, the stooping exercise 3 times, then bend the body forward with the hands toward the floor 10 times, then the circular motion of the body with the hands on the hips 3 times to either side, then the circular motion 3 times, then reverse 3 times. This to be used night and morning for at least 10 minutes - work on the exercises persistently. Take plenty of water into the system, fresh water, not mineral water, for those properties are to be added through medicinal properties which we will give into the system. Foods should be those that carry a great deal of protein that will assist the blood supply in rebuilding - lots of vegetables, not much meat, if at all, much fatty portions and not lean - cereals, fruits and fresh vegetables. Follow these out and we will find we will have a different body from that we have at present in six weeks.
-
We are through.

R1. 7/28/22 [4769]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Selma, Ala.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Yours of 26th to hand yesterday.
I have been wanting to write you, but just kept neglecting it from day to day. But I had made up my mind to write you by the end of this week, at latest.
After receipt of your diagnosis and prescription I was very busy and not being familiar with some of the exercise directions, kept waiting, hoping to find some one who could explain this part of the work to me, and finally my adopted son, […] came on a visit, and he instructed me as best he understood it, he having spent over four years in the U.S. Army, part of time being an instructor in drilling and exercise tactics.
A good part of time have been unable to secure the kind of food recommended. This, and being so busy with my work, caused me to hold back in the commencement of the treatment. And another thing: I kept thinking I would arrange and get off on a visit to my brother, who is a Chiropractor, in Longmont, Colorado, and who understands all the different physical exercising tactics, and thus be able to take a good rest, and at the same time get him to help me along with the work. But it looks like I am not going to be able to get off, and so have recently begun the exercises as demonstrated to me by my son. Have also been using foods as nearly like recommended as I have been able to secure here, and to drink more water than usual, and I have already noted great improvement in my general condition. Have not yet had the medicine part of prescription filled, but will within the next few days, if nothing happens to prevent, and will try to carry out all the instructions the best I can.
When I first began the physical exercises, there was one certain movement that caused me to feel the contracted muscles of the stomach, or somewhere in there, to move across the lower part of my lungs. This convinces me beyond all doubt that your diagnosis as to the cause of the awful smothering spells I had some weeks ago is correct. And this tightness of the muscles has given way to a great extent, and as a consequence I can get long breaths - deep inhalations - without discomfort. And I sleep just like a young, healthy baby, something that I have been unable to enjoy for past several years.
I feel perfectly confident that I will derive great good from the work given me, even though I might not be able to carry it out to the letter. If I were not so poverty-stricken, so I could afford to take a long rest, and at a place where I could get the proper foods, etc., thus enabling me to carry out the treatment in full, I feel most sure that I would receive benefits that would startle my friends when I returned home. Even now my friends are asking what is making me look so much better than usual, and what I am eating that is fattening me up so much. I generally give them some kind of foolish answer.
The awful constipation that I have been afflicted with for over thirty (30) years does not trouble me in the least now. This, alone, is worth thousands of dollars to me, if such a thing can be measured in dollars and cents. And the good, restful sleep seems so good to me.
I have shown the work to three Chiropractic doctors, all of whom have told me that it was one of the finest things they ever saw. But as to the medicine part of it, they could not express themselves, not being versed in medicine. All advised me to carry out the work. I have also shown the work to our local medical doctor, J. M. Shamburger, M.D. He said he did not know much about physical exercise, but that the food part of it was fine, and that the medicine part of it was one of the very best liver and spleen remedies known. He stated that you was a first class graduate in medicine, and a good judge of human nature, and that your “going to sleep” was all a sham. He said it was impossible for any but a well-versed physician to give what you have. He advised that I carry out the treatment in full, assuring me that there was no harm in it, and that he knew the food recommended and the medicine would do me great good. But he insisted that I get it out of my mind that you was NOT a medical and human nature expert.
I hope to be able to write you again from time to time, and keep you advised as to my conditions, etc.
In conclusion allow me to express my honest opinion and feelings about you. I believe you to be just what you are represented to be, not what YOU represent yourself to be, for you do not represent yourself to be anything unusual or unnatural, but what OTHERS who know you and who have seen and used your work represent you to be. And I consider you the most wonderful man in the entire world so far as my knowledge goes, and I have read and studied a great deal for past 35 years along all lines of scientific research and matters generally. Taking you, as I understand your work, and the Bible, as I understand it, you are simply the very embodiment of Jesus Christ, and a true apostle of His, doing His work just as He taught it and as He intended it should be given to the people. The main difference between you and the “common run” of the human family is that you are able to forget self absolutely, leaving your mind free to run as a machine of the spiritual world, turning out the TRUTH just as it is. By this I do not mean to state that you are a “spiritualist” as such persons are generally known, for you are not. You are in a catalog to yourself, and when put to use you turn out the goods to prove your works. In other words, there is something to show for your work, and not mere talk and theories.
I do not believe a better thing could be done than for the people to take you as an example, and by continuous thought, work, etc., try to comprehend your wonderful powers and try to do the same thing themselves. In other words, try to develop more like you. We need more thought along this line and less along the ordinary line of “preaching the Gospel.” Yours is the Gospel exemplified, and the other is the Gospel imagined and hoped for. What you are able to do is what ALL should be able to do, and will be in the course of time.
With very best wishes to you and your good father, whom I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with when in Selma on the 5th of this month, and at which time you diagnosed and prescribed for my case, I am your friend with all the power in me.
Yours truly, [4769]

Dear Sir:
Perhaps you will remember me. I had you give me a “reading” in Selma, Ala. a few years ago. At that time I lived at …, Miss. Your father conducted the “ceremony,” or whatever you term it, which I believe you state in your interesting pamphlet just received, that your wife now does.
At that time I believed you stated my condition just as it was. In prescribing the treatment there were certain physical exercises to be performed, but the instructions seemed to be rather vague, but I did the best I could. And part of the medicine called for in the prescription I could not secure in my home town (Meridian) drug stores. But, after all, I got much better of my complaint.
Now, I would like to get a brand new “reading” of my bodily troubles, together with “treatment” for same, and would be glad you set the time and advise me, giving any instructions you wish me to follow at same time, and I will do the best I can.
I notice you make no charges. I am not able, physically or financially, to go to you, so ask for the “absent” “reading.” But advise me what the stenographic charges will be, and I will send you check for same, adding some as a free donation to you.
With kind regards and best wishes to you, I am,
Your friend, [4769]

We shall certainly be very glad to make the appointment for you, and, as you will see, we enclosed, herewith, the appointment card. We are quite well dated up at the present time, but trust that this day and hour will be satisfactory to you. We certainly hope that we may be of service.

Dear Mr. Cayce:
Yours of 22nd in reply to mine of 19th instant received in due time. Was glad to hear from you again.
I herewith inclose card, filled out, together with check for
10.00. Wish I were able to make it at least25.00, but I have been sick so much, and had so much financial set-backs for past few years, that it has gotten me almost “flat.”I certainly hope that the reading you will give me will enable me to grasp the cause of my trouble, and that I may be able to carry out your instructions to the letter in order that I may be improved or cured of my ailments, and thus be able to enjoy life some more and be the cause of others enjoying theirs better, etc.
Your friend, [4769]
