GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for the further improvement of same.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here. This we have had before, you see.
-
Now, we find there are many changes in the body physically from that as we had here before. Many of the drosses of conditions as have existed show in the system at the present time. Many of the conditions as showed, in part have become accentuated, especially that condition in the lungs and in the blood supply of the body. Also those conditions, or the effect of the condition, as regarding the kidneys, the spleen. The LIVER and the action on the system is improved from that as we have had before. The resistance, as is seen by the condition of the blood, is less than that as we have had before.
-
The conditions then to be met at the present time, is the blood stream and the elements and constituents of same, that the resistance may be builded in the system, and the condition in the stomach overcome in such a way and manner that the assimilations for the system will build and give, in a more nominal and normal manner, that which will allow, or will build in the system, so that the physical defects in the functioning of the organism may become normal, or nearer to a normal condition throughout.
-
We would then, for the condition existent in the lungs, use this as an inhalant. This, as we see, also will assist that condition as exists in throat and in the bronchials, nasal cavity. The teeth need some local attention. This should be looked after as soon as the body is physically fit to do so.
-
To 4 ounces of grain alcohol, add:
Eucalyptol…20 minims, Benzoin…5 minims, Benzosol…20 minims, Canadian Balsam, or Balsam of Fir…10 minims, Tincture of Tolu, or Tolu in solution…30 minims, Heroin, dissolved…1/20 grain.
-
This shaken together, kept tightly corked in a container at least a third larger than the quantity of the properties, should be inhaled in the mouth at least 3 to 5 times each day. Deep inhalations. Do not take internally, see?
-
For the condition in the duodenum and the stomach proper, take as this:
-
All the water that is taken, for at least 2 weeks to 3 weeks, should carry small quantities of elm bark, ground. Preferably, let this stand in water for a while before taken, see? but do not allow to stand so long as to become sour, for this would be detrimental, rather than beneficial.
-
For the condition in the lower intestine, use high enemas, so that all refuse matter may be removed from the colon. This should be taken at least once each day for 10 to 15 days, see? tepid water with an antiseptic, such as Glyco-Thymoline. In gallon of water tablespoonful should be put.
-
As for other medicinal properties, do not take others than these as have been given for the whole three weeks.
-
Let the diet be beef juice - not the meats, but the juice as extracted from pure fresh meats, see? seasoned well, and vegetable foods of that that grows ABOVE the ground. All that of the pod nature, see? celery and lettuce, peas, beans, and those of that nature. Not any tuberous nature.
-
After the three weeks with this diet, these properties, this inhalant, we would then give further instructions for this body, [4769].
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 6/5/26 EC’s letter:
My dear Mr. [4759]
I enclose, herewith, the copy of the reading as was gotten, and certainly am in hopes that you will find this beneficial. I would suggest, if you have any trouble getting this prescription prepared, that you send same to Sellers Drug Company, 4th Avenue & 20th Street, Birmingham, Alabama. It will be necessary to send the whole reading for them to fill it for you. Of course they will return same with the prescription. I give this merely as a suggestion, should you find trouble in getting it prepared. You will notice also that we are to keep a closer check on your condition this time, and as we are permanently located, I am in hopes you won’t fail to do this, for I would certainly like to see you get strong and well. We are having such wonderful and remarkable reports from those who are following out the suggestions consistently, that I feel that you will benefit by doing this.
Be sure and let me hear from you from time to time, and with kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:GD

Gentlemen:
Replying to your letter of 12th instant, wish to state that I was in hurry for the medicine, and so after the elimination of the item of HEROIN, I had no trouble in getting the prescription filled in my home city, …, and I am now using the remedy.
I thank you for your attention in the matter, and will keep your name and address, as it may be that I will wish to refer a future prescription to you to be filled.
I herewith inclose 4 cents in postage for the return of the letter and “reading” from Mr. Cayce, which please return to me at once, and greatly oblige.
Say, by the way, what is “Heroin”? What was it used for? and what kind of effects did it have? Seems something like a dream to me, but it appears to me that I read something about it several years ago, but am unable to remember just what it was.
Yours truly, [4769]

REMARKS
(You will please state in the space below how near, in your opinion, reading fits your condition, as you know it yourself, and if you expect to carry out the suggestions made for the improvement of your health.) Recent tests by State Board of Health and by Central Life Insurance Co., of Cincinnati, Ohio, of sputum, shows I have t.b. Also recent examination (June 1st) by best hospital outfit in my home city, Meridian, including X-ray, proves I have t.b. All these tests made since June 1st of this year. Your “reading” verifies all the other tests and examinations, and I know from my personal feelings, symptoms, etc., that you simply “hit my case right on the head.” You referred to condition of my teeth, and “hit” it exactly, and I intended having them fixed as soon as my bodily condition would permit, just as you suggested.
Yes, intend to follow your prescriptions and suggestions as best I can. The inclosed copy of letter to Greene Drug Company, Inc., of Birmingham, Ala., will show what I lacked of getting a prescription filled in full. Got all other things all right.
Wonderful! Wonderful!! Wonderful!!! Wonderful!!!!

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Sir:
Inclosed papers will show for themselves.
I believe the “reading” stated that I should have another “reading” in three weeks. I wonder whether this means three weeks from date of other one, or three weeks from time I commenced treatment, etc. Anyway, I wish another “reading” when you think I should have it, so ask that you send application card, setting time, etc.
I received the “reading” on June 7th, and began all the treatments, diets, etc., on June 8th, EXCEPT the inhalant for the lungs, etc., which I could not get filled in Meridian, so sent it to Sellers Drug Co., in Birmingham, as you suggested, and finally got the inclosed letter from Greene Drug Co., and so I marked out the item of “Heroin,” and so had no trouble in getting it filled yesterday morning in Meridian, and am now using it. I sent the prescription (having drawn it off on another piece of paper) to Meridian last week by a brother of mine, I being in bed all the time, and he said each druggist would look at it and hand back to him with the statement that they could not fill it, but without an explanation as to why they could not. So I then sent it to Birmingham. Guess the “Heroin” was the trouble. [4769]
R6. 6/18/26 EC’s letter:
Mr. [4769] …, Miss.
My dear Mr. [4769]
I have yours of the 15th. Of course, I am glad to know that you feel the reading checked up with the actual condition. I am sorry you were not able to get the full prescription prepared. At the present time I have a physician on a visit to me, who is studying the phenomena, having had occasion to use it for himself, individually, for his wife and also for his son. He has gotten considerably away from the rock bound ethics of the profession, by his knowledge and experience with the work. He says that of course the check reading on the case will tell as to whether this should be carried out completely or not, that Heroin is a sedative, a derivative of the same properties of Morphine, but of course being in an inhalant works entirely different from that drug on the system, acting, of course, more in the form of a gas and is especially active on the lung tissue, but I’m mighty glad to know that you have gotten started with the treatments, and we have set the date July 27th, which is the first opening we have, and at that time we will check up on your physical condition. Should there any condition arise that you would like to have specific questions asked concerning, please make note of these and have them in hand by that time. This may possibly assist in making the conditions clearer to yourself and may be helpful to you in getting results.
You know its my desire, Mr. [4769] to be of help, and we want to hear from you from time to time. I thank you very much for the information that you sent me in your letter. While I was in Birmingham, some several years ago, Sellers Drug Company sent their prescription man to see me, and they kept a record of all the prescriptions as were given in the various readings that were carried to them to be compounded. There was a physician at the time associated with the organization. He went over each reading and each prescription and filled them all without any questions. This possibly may be a new ruling in the Federal Narcotic Law, but we have had several prescriptions filled with this drug in various parts of the country, by physicians - but I’m in hopes this is going to work alright without this for you.
Hoping that you are finding improvement already, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Yours of 18th in reply to mine of 15th received.
Am sorry that I will have to wait so long before getting another reading - July 27th - but I know you are doing the best you can in reference to appointments.
Will you send me another card to fill out, similar to the last? If not necessary, then will you advise me of the hour or time of day? I will await your reply.
I remain in the bed all the time, as if I sit up an hour or two I become very weak, and my cough gets worse. As I have not sat up any since about June 1st, except a few minutes at the time, I am hardly able to state how much your treatment is doing me; but I can state that I feel considerably better, in every respect, except as noted below, than I did when I commenced your treatment. The exception is, my bowels do not seem to have any life or action at all. Have been using the high enema for several months past, with an antiseptic (Zonite) in the water. Your reading called for this treatment, except you recommended another antiseptic, so I began using instead of the Zonite. Both antiseptics are fine.
Before I began your treatment I craved barbecued beef, but had no appetite for anything else. Occasionally we could get some barbecued beef, which seemed to taste good to me, and to “hit the spot” where it was needed. Since beginning your treatment and diet the beef juice or broth just seems to take the place of the barbecued beef, and so I no longer crave the barbecued beef. So it seems that while the barbecued beef was “good,” the beef juice is simply “perfect.” All this gives me great confidence in your diagnosis and prescriptions.
Thank you for privilege of asking any questions in reference to my apparent condition, which might make the reading more clear to me. I shall avail myself of this in reference to two or three matters. Presume it will be all right to get the questions in to you by July 27th. If not, advise me.
Could write more, but am getting a little tired, so will now lie down again.
With all kinds of best wishes to you and all connected with you in the good work, I am,
Your friend, [4769]
R8. 6/25/26 EC’s letter:
My dear Mr. [4769]
Replying to yours of the 22nd, I am sorry we have to wait so long for your reading, but we, of necessity, have to keep them in the order they are received, and I assure you we are trying to do our very best. I feel a special interest in you, on account of your sincerity, and having known you, and I certainly hope that you are going to respond just as you should to the suggestions as have been made and as you carry these out.
I’d like to ask just what kind of enema you use for yourself. I ask this for the reason that I know often it has been indicated that these high enemas to cleanse the intestinal tract should be used, and at times it has given a special make, which seems to me to be the best thing that is on the market in that line. In fact, it is the same kind I use myself. Possibly this may be the same thing you have, but I know this is effective where many others have failed. It is called J B L Cascade.
Certainly glad to know that you find the beef juice agreeing with you, and I’m sure this is one of the very best things to give strength to anyone. I reckon you, of course, prepare it in the same way - I don’t know though whether it was indicated in the reading or not - just how it should be prepared. This, however, is the way that it has been given to prepare - take about a pound of good fresh lean steak, cut into cubes - small cubes, put it in a glass jar - no water in it, seal it, put it in water, putting something in the bottom of the kettle, cloth of some kind, and let the water boil for about an hour. Take this off and you will find that all the juice has come out of the meat. Draw this off and season to taste. You really get the strength that is in it without the system having to handle the other portion of the meat.
We enclose the card for the 27th, giving the time that this can be made. Be sure to send in your questions, so it may help clarify things for you. Don’t wait too late - but just so you have them in by that day is alright - for you’ll want to know the condition at THAT time, and you can make your questions accordingly.
Certainly hope this finds you feeling a lot better. With kindest personal regards,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:GD
R9. 7/17/26 [4769]‘s letter:
…, Miss.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Excuse me for not replying to your letter of June 25th before this date. I have not felt like writing much, and so have done as little of it as possible.
As to kind of enema I use: We use a fountain syringe, composed of a half-gallon enamelware fount, with a red rubber tube about 4 feet long to which is attached a red rubber colon tube about 2-1/2 feet long. Insert end of tube an inch or so, and turn water on, and while the water is flowing in keep pushing tube up as far as it will go without too much pain, usually from 1 to 2 feet. Soon as water is out of fount, close clip on tube and withdraw tube. Lie on back with hips elevated a foot or so while using the water. After withdrawing tube, take “prop” from under hip, still lying on back, and knead bowels some with the hands, and then get up. This usually brings out everything pretty well, and leaves me feeling tolerably comfortable. My greatest trouble is piles, which hurts awfully bad when inserting the tube, etc.
Have never used the J. B. L. Cascade, but used to read a great deal about it. I have a brother in Denver, Col., who is a Chiropractic doctor, and says he has used nearly every kind of syringe made, using them in his practice, and says that for my purpose he prefers just what I am using.
Beef Juice: No, directions for preparing this was not given in the reading, and for a few days we were at a loss to know how to prepare it. But another brother of mine, who lives here, and is a Chiropractic doctor, told us how to prepare it, which I find to be exactly like you direct on your letter of June 25th. However I wish to thank you for the information.
For past two weeks or so I have not used the inhalant, as used up about all I had of it. Also “cut out” the beef juice, as thought maybe a little change would help, until could reach another reading. Still using the elmbark in drinking water, and also the antiseptic in the enema water. In the mean time have been using Fellows’ Hypophosphite of Soda compound, which is an old and highly recommended remedy for building up the body, especially so in tubercular cases. Believe I have gained some in strength, but am still losing in weight. My usual weight is about 138, and it is now 112. June 7th it was 126. Loss in 40 days 14 pounds.
Yours truly, [4769]
QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN THE READING TO BE GIVEN ON JULY 27, 1926, FOR [4769], …, MISS.
Have suffered for 40 years with piles, and I now fear that I have a fistula coming. What is the condition as exists July 27, 1926? What remedy, if any, for it?
Seems that no matter what kind of diet I use I have lots of gas in my bowels. What is the cause? and remedy? (My Chiropractic brothers say that they believe the cause to be catarrhal phlegm or mucus.)
Some 10 or 15 years ago was operated on for appendicitis. At times have soreness on inside at location of this old operation. Is there any trouble here, such as adhesions, etc? Remedy?
By pressing my fingers in each side just below my ribs, just above the large bone of the hips, I can detect a soreness. This hurts me a great deal of the time when coughing. What is the trouble? And Remedy?
Is the stomach and duodenum ulcerated? If so, is it of a serious nature? or is it just in a weakened condition?
I cough and spit up a good little bit of mucus every day and night. Part of it is real yellow and offensive. Is this out of my lungs? Or is it out of my bronchial tubes? Are my lungs badly affected? How about bronchial tubes? When did I contract this lung or bronchial trouble? What was the main or underlying cause of it? (Medical authorities have pronounced my case as that of tuberculosis of the lungs.)
Have not been able to have my teeth fixed, as suggested in reading of June 5th. They do not hurt me, but I know they are in rather bad condition, including the gums. Is this contributing to any appreciable extent to my continued weakened condition?
I suffer (not so much pain) all the time from “rheumatism” in my shoulders and between my shoulders. Is this caused from the condition of the teeth?
In any diets that might be prescribed in the reading, please give instructions for preparing, where necessary.
If there is any of above you cannot incorporate in the reading, then please leave it out. But I would surely like as complete and detailed reading as possible, as it seems I must get better soon, or it will be too late. As a whole, I am feeling much better than when you gave the reading of June 5th. But I have been in bed most of time, trying to rest all I could. But a bad feature, it looks to me, is the continual loss of weight.
