This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 27th day of July, 1926, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [4769].

Time of Reading 2 miles east of 6:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Miss.

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for the further improvement of same, and you will answer the questions regarding same that I will ask you.

2. EC: Now, we find in many respects the body shows some improvement through the physical conditions of the body, still the intestinal tract gives much trouble and distress. We should use more of the alkaline solutions for the system. Well that the alkaline Petrolagar be added to those conditions for the intestinal system. This will prevent so much gas forming in the intestinal tract, from inflammation, where poor assimilation in the functioning of the digestive system shows distress, and add also to the healing properties to the intestinal tract.

3. Keep up those inhalants, for these are an addition to the system. Well were those properties as given [Heroin?] added to inhalant.

4. The diet - should keep as much of the beef juices as the system will assimilate well. As much oil, olive oil, and the oils of fruit and nuts are well for the system. These will give strength and prevent the gases in the system.

5. (Q) Have suffered for 40 years with piles, and I now fear that I have a fistula coming. What is the condition as exists? What remedy, if any, for it? (A) This is, as seen and as given, the wall of the lower tract allowed to be loosened by the condition in the nerve system that has allowed this portion to become so lax as to give trouble. Well that those properties as are found in that preparation as has been given [Tim] be used for this condition, see?

6. (Q) Some 10 or 15 years ago was operated on for appendicitis. At times have soreness on inside at location of this old operation. Is there any trouble here, such as adhesions, etc? Any remedy? (A) The high enemas, with the antiseptic, will give more relief for this condition, with the massaging gently of this portion of the body after such operation (that is, the high enema) has removed or relieved the pressure in that region. Some signs of adhesions there, and the general inflammation as is seen throughout intestinal tract, the whole system absorbing (that is, through the alimentary canal) those conditions as are seen general in system, see? Hence the necessity of keeping these eliminations well in hand, not allowing any fecal matter to gather, yet letting system absorb all that it will take from foods, so long as the digestion is kept in good fix, see?

7. (Q) By pressing my fingers in each side just below my ribs, just above the large bone of the hips, I can detect a soreness. This hurts me a great deal of the time when coughing. What is the trouble? Any remedy? (A) This is the sympathetic conditions from the soreness of adhesions in the intestinal system, see? The poor circulation through this portion of the body. The gentle massage will give relief for this condition. Well that, after the system is relieved through the enema, equal parts of Olive Oil and Tincture of Myrrh be massaged in the whole system below the hips to the upper portion of hips, or the abdominal region, well into the groin on either side. Massage gently as much as system will absorb, after the operation - that is, the enema - has relieved the system. Do not massage with the system full, see?

8. (Q) Is the stomach and duodenum ulcerated? If so, is it of a serious nature? Or is it just in a weakened condition? (A) A general debilitation, and the over-acid condition keeps this in this state. Hence those properties as given.

9. (Q) I cough and spit up a good little bit of mucus every day and night. Part of it is real yellow and offensive. Is this out of my lungs, or is it out of my bronchial tubes? (A) From tubes and lungs. Best that this is thrown off, and after such coughing spells inhale WELL of those properties as given, which will heal and give strength and resistance to system, destroying that tissue as is necessary for removal, see?

10. (Q) Are my lungs badly affected? (A) There are spots, and not badly affected. The general debilitation through intestinal system more serious than that condition in lungs; yet this must not be allowed to become localized, or centralized in any one portion at the present time.

11. (Q) How about bronchial tubes? (A) Rough, and show some inflammation.

12. (Q) When did I contract this lung or bronchial trouble? What was the main or underlying cause of it? (A) General debilitation throughout the digestive system, and then with cold and congestion, with those of the bacilli called “flu” settling in this portion of the body, produced the condition in the lung, or localized same.

13. (Q) Have not been able to have my teeth fixed, as suggested in reading of June 5th. They do not hurt me, but I know they are in rather bad condition, including the gums. Is this contributing to any appreciable extent to my continued weakness? (A) This constantly adding pus to the system keeps the constant source of irritation. Be well were some of these removed, and well that those of the Ipsab be used in the gums and mouth, rubbed in and gently washed at least two to three times each week.

14. (Q) I suffer all the time from “rheumatism” in my shoulders and between my shoulders. Is this caused from the condition of the teeth? (A) This is rather of the neuritis condition than of rheumatism, and is aided and abetted by the condition of toxins in the system as a general, and of teeth as a specific.

15. (Q) Any specific diet for the body at this time? (A) Rather that as is outlined. As much of the Beef Juices as will be assimilated. As much of nuts, fruits and oils as the body can take, see?

R1. 7/28/26 EC’s letter to [4769]:

“I enclose you herewith, the reading as was gotten. I certainly am in hopes that you find this interesting and beneficial, and that you can follow out thoroughly the suggestions as were given. Two of the things that were suggested [Tim, Ipsab] I am sending you, as we already have some of these prepared, and I’m in hopes that you will find these very beneficial, for the present conditions. I assure you of our interest, Mr. [4769], and we’d like for you to let us hear from you, and we’d like to check up on this whenever you feel like it is necessary. We’ll try to arrange to get it in…”

R2. 8/2/26 [4769]‘s letter to EC:

“Your letter of July 28th and reading of 27th, received 29th. The pile remedy and Ipsab for teeth and gums received today in good shape. Thank you very much for the present, but will send you check for same as soon as you let me know amount of bill, and if no bill, then I hope to be able to send you a check just the same some time soon.

“I presume you keep a carbon copy of all readings. If so, please refer to mine of July 27th, …, and advise how the alkaline, Petrolagar, is to be used. The reading does not state how to use it.

“I have not yet tried to get the Petrolagar. So, do not know whether I will be able to get it or not. I never heard of the name before. Sure hope it is not a drug that I will be unable to get, as I am real anxious to get everything suggested in the readings, and to use it as it should be used, for I have great faith in the readings.

“We use about 1# fresh beefsteak per day in making the Beef Juice, which makes about a large coffee cup of the juice, which is divided into two meals, one taken about 12 o’clock in the day and the other about 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Wonder if this is enough for me? If not, could you suggest about how much I should use per day? I like the taste mighty well, and it seems to assimilate all right, as I never ‘belch’ it up.

“Referring to answer to question one in the reading, I presume the remedy referred to is the one you have just sent me.

“Referring to answer to question four, I presume the remedy (properties) referred to is the Petrolagar. If not, what?

“Now, referring to the last reading (July 27, 1926), I wish to state that it ‘just fits my case’ in every particular. I believe it could not have been made more perfect and accurate if I had been cut into pieces so that you could have made a close, personal inspection of every part. There sure is a mysterious and wonderful revelation transmitted through you from some power beyond human comprehension. I have a brother who is a chiropractor, and who is perfectly familiar with my case, and he says there is no doubt of both readings of my case being absolutely accurate. He says it is A WONDER OF WONDERS. He hopes to meet you some day and talk with you personally.

“I am feeling better than for several months past, and have gained two pounds in weight in last two weeks…”

R3. 8/7/26 EC’s letter to [4769]:

“Glad to have yours of the 2nd, and more than glad to know that you are feeling better and are somewhat on the improve. That’s fine! And I just feel sure that you are going to keep on improving until you are a well, strong man and back on the job, with more vim, vigor and vitality than you have ever had before in your life.

“To be sure, we keep a copy of all of the readings, and replying to the question you asked concerning yours of the 27th, the alkaline, Petrolagar, I feel sure you will be able to obtain from any drugstore. As I understand from the readings where this has been given, and what druggists and physicians tell me concerning it, this is a preparation, especially, for individuals who have any intestinal disorder, and especially where gas forms easily in the stomach and bowels, and where an individual is subject to constipation. As you will notice, this calls for the ALKALINE. I believe this is made in alkaline and an acid. Of course the alkaline is for where acidity shows in the system, but I don’t think you’ll have any trouble getting this. This will be especially good with the Beef Juice, and I think you are right in the amount, and you know you want to judge by the amount you are able to assimilate as to the amount to take, and as I understand, the Petrolagar will assist you in assimilating.

“The answers in question number one in reading, refer to the ones that I think I sent you, and I’m in hopes that you are going to receive the benefits from these as others have. No, I just sent these for your own use, and of course there is no charge for them. You can contribute to the work as you see fit, but these two have been given over and over again, as specifics for pyorrhea, of Rigg’s Disease, and the ointment for any rectal trouble - piles, fistula, or such like, and I know of two cases, especially, that this ointment has proven most wonderful; one a case where a person had chronic piles for more than forty years. While of course it has not CURED the condition, for they are of the protruding nature, but the individual tells me he is better from the use of this than he has been in the whole forty years.

“In question four, I’m sure this refers to the Petrolagar.

“Many thanks for your letter, Mr. [4769], and I’m certainly in hopes that you will let us hear from you every opportunity you have…”

R4. 8/12/26 [4769]‘s letter to EC:

”…Many thanks for the information given and for your kindly feeling and good wishes in my welfare. This makes me feel good.

“By paying the price of a ‘regular visit,’ I got a physician to sign the prescription for the inhalant, as given in reading of June 4th, and then I had no trouble in getting it filled by a druggist in my home city, …, four miles from where I live. The physician said it was ‘all bosh’ about heroin not being allowed to be manufactured and sold in the U.S. And, by the way, he said this prescription was a powerful antiseptic, and should do me a lot of good. He said the heroin was a mighty important part of it, too. I got the prescription filled one week ago today, and it seems to be doing some good. But I still cough a lot, and at times spit up more or less mucus.

“The first few times I used the pile remedy you sent me, it seemed to do a lot of good. Then it seemed to get ‘weak,’ and upon examination, found that the hot weather had melted it. Some of the ingredients (the black part in particular) had settled to bottom of box, and upon trying it, found it to be too severe. What could I mix with it to make it safe to use?

“Would appreciate it if you would send me more of the pile remedy, two or three times the original quantity. Hereafter I will keep it well mixed, especially during hot weather when it is liable to ‘melt down’ and ingredients separate.

“I had no trouble in getting the Petrolagar alkaline at one of the city drugstores. At last, and for the first time, I have been able to get all the remedies and prescriptions as suggested in the readings, and am now using all of them according to suggestions, and hope I will soon be able to report good results to you.

“We are in the worst financial condition we have ever been in, having to depend to a great extent upon charity for what we live on. But that is no reason why I should want to make you a pauper too. So I am enclosing my check for $2.50 to ‘help the cause’ some…”

R5. 8/18/26 EC’s letter to [4769]:

“I was certainly glad to have yours of the 12th, and to know you are feeling pretty good, and I’m more than glad to know you were able to get a physician to fix up the prescription for you. I can’t help but feel that this will prove more beneficial, and I believe you will see the difference in the results of same - perhaps have already found this.

“As for the pile remedy, I am sending you another lot. This is the largest size bottle or jar we have this made up in at present. It should be kept stirred up, so that it would be of the same consistency throughout. I believe you will find this good, and will help you a whole lot.

“Many thanks for the check you enclosed. I appreciate your feelings in the matter. Apparently all don’t feel this way, for there are many that I never hear from at all, until they tell someone else that the suggestions were what cured them. I’m sure that you’re going to come along all right, and it won’t be long before you’ll be in a better condition physically and financially.

“Let me hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. You know I am vitally interested in your condition, and desire to be of help if it’s possible…”

R6. 11/1/26 EC’s letter to [4769]:

“Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of the party!

“Within the next few weeks I will have a get-together meeting of those interested in the success of the work I am and have been doing.

“Since coming to the Beach, the work has succeeded wonderfully. More than six hundred readings have been given, and much good accomplished along many lines.

“Now the time has come to begin the hospital work proper. We will begin at once, and you will want to have your part in this.

“Fifty thousand dollars will start a benevolent hospital, incorporated. This would be conducted along research lines.

“Those who have already received aid should be the ones, and are being asked, to contribute first. From this group will be chosen the managers and those to act on various committees, with a scientific man at the head to direct the work. You know the good that may be accomplished by carrying out the suggestions as are given in these readings, and you will want to help make this possible. You know your own abilities to contribute, and we want to make it possible to go on and serve others in a better and more scientific manner. You know how sincere has been my effort to be of help to others, and I am sure you now desire to help me to help others.

“This is not an experiment. Many years of labor and records are behind us. Look at what others say. Then, let’s get together, everyone doing their part, and we will have the greatest humanitarian institution in the world.

“Return your card today - become a member of this Association. Every dollar will help. This will be put in a fund for this purpose only, the Hospital. You will know how every dollar is spent, who and how many you have aided in making their suffering lighter, and life’s pathway easier.

“‘As ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so to them.’

“Do it now…”

R7. 12/3/26 [4769]‘s letter to EC:

“I am glad to learn of the undertaking you are making, as referred to on other side of this sheet, and only wish I were able to help out some on it. But I am confined in the Kings’ Daughters Tubercular Hospital at this place, as a charity patient, and am completely ‘flat,’ financially, and no income of any kind. I used to be making a little money, and getting along fairly well, but not for the last three or four years.

“I am glad to be able to state that since coming here on or about August 15th, I have gained about twenty pounds in weight, and that I feel much better generally than I have in a long time, and that my cough is not very bad now, and cough up but little stuff now.

“While here I have to take such medicines as the doctor prescribes, and eat such foods as they give me, so am not able to follow up your treatment as prescribed for me last spring and summer. But I wish to state that the diagnosis by the doctor here verified every bit of your diagnosis, and that part of the treatment is the same as you prescribed. If I could have had the money with which to buy the proper foods while at home, I believe I would have improved there just as well as I have here. My stomach and bowels, as you stated, seem to have been my worst trouble, and they are not yet cured by a whole lot, but seem to be much better, and if I continue to improve in the future as I have since coming here last August, I believe I will be able to go back home within the next six months or so.

“I sure would like to have another reading as to my present condition, noting any changes that have taken place, and suggestions as to further improvement. But I do not like to ride a good horse to death, so I could not ask you to give me this reading, for, as above stated, I am completely out of money and have no income. Friends have contributed a little money to me to get winter underwear, postage stamps, etc. I sure hope I will be able to be self-sustaining before this time next year. I have no immediate family except my wife, and she is a patient now in the State Charity Hospital at … Mississippi for kidney trouble, rheumatism, etc. So you see we are having a hard time of it now.

“With kind regards to you, and wishing you success with the project in hand…”

R8. 12/8/26 EC’s letter to [4769]:

“I was certainly very glad to have yours of the 3rd. It’s good to know that you are getting along nicely. I’m sorry that things have broken so bad for you, but it’s good for a fellow to know that the people of this old world have it in their hearts to establish institutions where those who are unfortunate, and the sick and afflicted, can have at least the care and attention due every son of the Father.

“Yes, we shall be very glad to get a reading for you at this time, Mr. [4769]. While, as you say, it is necessary for you to take such medicines as the doctors whose care you are under prescribe, and to have such diet as they prepare for you - yet a man of your turn of mind, ideas of life, I am sure it will be a great satisfaction to know what would be given as regarding your condition from these sources, and if it is possible for us to be of any benefit, either in mind or body, to any individual, that is the service we want to render. Just how soon I can get to this, I don’t know. But I wish you would let me have the ward or room number in which you are apt to be located at the time we will be able to take this up.

“I had the very sad misfortune to lose my Mother on the 26th of October. She had been in failing health for a number of years, and as she told me in her last moments, I had kept her alive for at least three years, but I could do no more, but I must use the gift God had given me to help others. That alone, I think, Mr. [4769], would be a great incentive to me. Don’t you think so? I know there was never a better mother, nor a more beautiful Christian character, and I know that she has gone to her reward. But in her loss there is a something that seems to stun me almost to where it has been very hard for me to get back to regular work. Of course, the weeks that I was out, naturally there were a great many requests, and there were a great many appointments that had to be deferred. Consequently, our appointments have gotten in advance of our time, and most everyone that has requested readings lately seem to be taking advantage of the opportunity given them to obtain information from this source concerning their physical condition. And, as you know, I am only able to give two readings in one day. So it makes me limited in the number of people that I can assist, but I assure you we shall be glad to take this up for you, and I certainly hope and trust that you and your wife both will soon be on the road to excellent health. I appreciate very much your kindly feelings, and may God’s richest blessings rest with you and yours…”

R9. 1/17/27 [4769]‘s letter to EC:

“I certainly appreciate your kind letter and offer of December 8, 1926, but I must admit I have been rather careless in replying to same.

“I appreciate your offer of another reading of my case. But I am able to imagine your position, with so many applications ahead of mine, and so shall not avail myself of your offer. Not at present, at least. Maybe some time in the future I will be financially able to help you a little, for I know a good man like you is imposed upon no little, even by those who are amply able to assist you financially. You have to have something to eat, clothes to wear, a place to sleep, etc., and we should help you along all we could. The good you are doing, or the good that is manifested through you, is worth more than can be measured by dollars, but not many of us give it a serious thought.

“I am glad to state that I am much improved over what I have been for over a year. I weigh as much as I ever weighed in my life, a gain of twenty-nine pounds since I have been here, and I am able to be up and walk around some every day. But my stomach and bowels still give me a lot of trouble, which have been my main trouble all the time. One of your readings stated that my stomach and bowels were in a much worse condition than my lungs. This has proven to be the absolute truth of the matter. So far, every part of your diagnosis has proven to be absolutely correct.

“May God bless you and allow you a long life in which to pass on to suffering humanity the great truths that The Unknown Force makes manifest through you.

“You have my sincere sympathy in the death of your good mother on October 26th, last. I love my wife, but there is a motherly love in me that excels all other loves. A mother is the most saintly being we have on earth. My mother died a little over thirteen years ago, and I still cannot realize it to the full extent of the fact. My father, age eighty-two, died November 30th, last, or a month and four days after your mother. I was not able to go to see him or attend the funeral. He lived with my wife and myself until last August, when I was brought here to the hospital, and then he had to go and live with a brother of mine.

“Well, I must close for this time. I hope to keep in touch with you and your good works. Will try to write you again from time to time, and hope to hear from you when convenient for you to write. I know you are a busy man, so shall not expect a letter from you ‘every foggy morning…”

R10. 1/26/27 EC’s letter to [4769]:

“I am always very glad to have a letter from you, and especially glad to have yours of the 17th and to know that you are feeling so much better and feel that you have every reason to think you are really on the gain, and possibly will soon be a whole lot better yet.

“Yes, as I have understood your condition from the first, Mr. [4769], your greatest trouble has been your digestive system - stomach and bowels, of course, especially, or in other words, your own body becomes so rundown by absorbing the toxins from your own system as to lay the rest of the organism open to receive most any destructive force that might be surrounding you at any time. But I am in hopes that with the proper strength and vitality built up, you will be able to cope with this condition and get this trouble corrected. I am sure you fully realize what you’ve got to meet, and being forewarned you should be forearmed. And you may be sure, if there is at any time you feel I could possible be of assistance in helping you get just the right thing necessary for the full correction, I shall be only too glad to try and be of help.

“I was sorry indeed to hear of your father’s death, though he lived to a good old age. I know that you regretted seeing him go, though I am one of those who believe that our loved ones are about us, and being absent from the body are present in the spiritual body, perhaps in a better way to assist us than they had ever been before, if we will but put our minds in an attunement with the spiritual forces, for God is Spirit, and He seeks such to worship Him.

“Let us hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. I certainly hope that you continue to improve, and that your good wife is feeling better also…”

R11. [4769]‘s letter to EC:

“Have you read the article by Stewart Edward White, “Mysteries I cannot Explain “in the July, 1926, number of The American Magazine? If not, I wish you would, for it is in reference to your wonderful kind of revelations. You are not mentioned, but some others are mentioned, and it is real interesting. I guess you can get a copy in your town, or if not, then from the publishers, Cromwell Publishing Company, Springfield, Ohio…”

R12. 8/25/27 [4769]‘s letter to EC:

”…I sincerely wish that I were able to take membership in this Association, and to get readings from you every month or so. But owing to sickness, etc., we have lost nearly everything we have, and now have no home. I am still a charity patient here in the Kings’ Daughters Tubercular Hospital, where I have been since the 20th of August of last year. I appear to be considerably improved, but still lack a great deal of being well. I stay up most of every day now, but cannot stand much exertion. The food I get here does not agree with me very well, and so I am planning to leave here next week and go to Denver, Colorado where I have a brother who states that he will take care of me free of charge for at least one year if necessary. He is a chiropractic doctor. (By the way, I believe he might be interested in your wonderful work, and would suggest that you send him one of your pamphlets and any other literature that would tend to give him an insight to your wonderful work. Write him too, telling him that I referred you to him, etc. His street address of …, name, Dr. […], Denver, Colorado.) If I do not go to Denver, then I think I shall buy a tent and put it up somewhere around my home town, and try living in it, as I have no family except my wife, who is working in a knitting mill, trying to pay our expenses as far as possible.

“No matter where I go, I wish to keep in touch with you and your wonderful work. I am still as thoroughly convinced as I was when you gave me the two readings over a year ago that the diagnoses given my case are accurate in every particular. I have watched symptoms and results closely all the time, and it all goes to prove that your readings were absolutely correct.

“Several months ago you wrote me, stating your opinions in reference to ‘heaven,’ or our heavenly state after we die, to which I wish to state that I concur with you in every particular, and in which I have had several manifestations that convince me of the correctness of your theory…”

P.S. “My brother’s wife’s people live in Virginia, but I don’t know what part of the state.”

R13. 9/1/27 EC’s letter: “Was certainly very glad to have yours of August 25th. Very glad to know that you are still somewhat on the improve, and I’m in hopes that you will be able to make the visit to your brother in Colorado, if that’s what you really desire to do. I only wish that our institution was in full running order and we could have you come on here, where you might have the advantage of the institution and of the readings whenever necessary. That is what we are trying to have this for, that we may be better able to serve humanity, and that we may be able to follow out in a systematic way and manner the suggestions that are made in the readings for the improvement - for, as you say yourself, you believe that the readings were correct, and if it were possible for those suggestions as were given to be carried out in full, then the results as promised in the readings certainly must follow, and I am hoping that if you have not entirely recovered from your trouble, by the time we are in running order, that you will arrange it so that you can be here where you will be looked after in the proper way and manner - for we expect to have, of course, places especially fitted for people with your trouble and believe we will be able to be of service to a great many. Our work is going along very nicely at the present time. We hope to be able to start with the actual erection of the building in the next few weeks, and as soon as this is completed, of course we will be ready for those who care to take advantage of the institution.

“Be sure and let us keep in touch with you. I sent some data to your brother in Denver, and know that whenever you desire it we shall be more than glad to try and be of help - though I know you have a very poor way of having the information carried out as is suggested in the readings.

“Many thanks for referring me to the article by Steward Edward White. I think we have the magazine here. We have had some correspondence with Mr. White, but he has never investigated the work personally.

“Trusting you will let us hear from you from time to time, and with kindest personal regards…”
