This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of January, 1931, in accordance with request made by his wife, Mrs. […] - through Dr. W. H. Ketchum.

-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [4827]. Now, we find as to the disturbing factors in the physical forces of this body, these are as much from the distortions as produced in nerve reaction - from incoordination in the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal system - as from PHYSICAL disorders themselves; for the physical disorders are more the EFFECTS than affectation in the system. While these, we find, are pressures - or lack of coordinations - these conditions, or these incoordinations, as are also in turn an affect of disturbances in the system. Not from brain lesions; neither from (at present) a softening of the tissue itself; neither from INJURY, direct - but rather from an affectation of the glands in the system that have to do with the creation and operation of stamina in the system. This produced by conditions existent in the system from taking in the body those quantities, or a qualified or qualitated condition for conditions from exterior, and the effects that these have produced upon the body through those glands, especially, that make for the coordination in sympathetic and cerebro-spinal - especially in the region of the adrenals, the thyroid reaction, and the glands as TO the system in its progenerative or generative forces, as gentitation.
-
In the effects as created, in keeping the body quiet - the administration for the sedentary effects to the body have gradually lost their effect, so that the body - while not in that state as of drivel from the system, may become so unless there is a change in the character of such an active force in the system - that is, the nerve forces - and unless there may be accorded that which may bring a better coordination in the system, so that the muscular forces, in the sinew and tissue itself may not become inflammed, and an increased lymph and capillary circulation so bring such reactions for the body. The blood supply must, sooner or later, become attacked by same, and while we will find, the reactions to the greater extent would be of a negative nature, yet there will be periods when positive reactions are also seen - especially if taken in the early portion of the day.
-
In those reactions to the general system, as of digestion and the other portions of body - we will find that these must be kept more in accord with the administrations that are given for beneficial effects to the body, whether those applications of an external nature, internal, or medicated conditions.
-
Then, in meeting the needs in the present - as related to applications - we will find that the sedative effects may be given in a manner that will bring a better and easier reaction for the whole body. These we would prepare in capsule form and give in this manner, this in each capsule - and this one dose:
Oil of Eucalyptus…1 minim, Rectified Creosote…1/2 minim, Rectified Oil of Turp…1 minim, Codeine, preferably in the tablet…1/20 grain.
This would be given not oftener than one each day, unless a reaction is necessary - when a more powerful nature may be applied.
-
We would also begin with those injections as of a typhoid serum. Give a whole course, yet in MINIMUM dosage. Then, in three to eight weeks, repeat such a course.
-
We would also use those vibrations for the system that may be found in the sinusoidal ray, of the short wave length - or that as makes for a REVERSE coil activity; the applications or anodes, or pads, being connected at the plexus where the brachial center emanates, and in the 4th lumbar. These we would not give oftener than twice each week. After the third week we may apply them in the 2nd cervical center (the first anode or plate), and in the umbilicus center (the other plate). In either application, do not let the rays be of longer duration than one and a half to two minutes.
-
It would be well also that the electrical driven vibrator, or rotator, be applied along the cerebro-spinal system. This we would apply from the 1st cervical to the end of the spine.
-
In the diet - keep more to the citrous fruits, nuts, and other fruits, bewaring of apples (unless of the jenneting variety), and NO bananas. Pears, grapes, grapefruit, peaches, plums, apricots, dates, figs - ALL such may be taken, but those as given (apples and bananas) should be eliminated from the diet.
-
Keep the mental surroundings for the body in an atmosphere of cheerful helpfulness; not as centralized on DO this, or DON’T do that - but let’s TOGETHER do this, that, or let’s TOGETHER don’t do this or that. See? a guiding force. We will see a response and the nearer coordinative forces in this body of [4827].
-
We would give further instructions in six to nine weeks.
-
We are through for the present.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-
It has been seven months since I wired you for an emergency reading for my husband and am surely grateful for the prompt attention which you gave me, also the help it has been to him. I took him soon to Dr. Ketchum, in Palo Alto, and began the treatment which you prescribed but owing to our busy lives and heavy business responsibilities we have been a little slow with them. He had the first series of typhoid treatments without interruption - reaction very severe at first but condition very much improved by the last one. He is in the midst of the 2nd series now but with many interruptions. I have been in business several years with my husband - bake shop & eating business several years ago he started gambling and it got a terrible hold on him before I knew it. Since then I have labored incessantly to cure him but to no avail. He has as fine a physique as a man can have and has never dissipated in any way except gambling but he has hurt himself mentally & seriously through his gambling and now has not the will power to quit. I am at my wits end and am also well nigh worn out myself, trying to match and care for him and keep our business in good shape. We have a bake-shop in San Francisco, a tea-room & bake-shop here in Burlingame and are putting a bake-shop in Los Angeles. My husband is a quaker and well educated man - a brilliant mind, a fine musical ear and exquisite, artistic taste. He could have gone far in music & art had he been trained along those lines - has a fine singing voice. He is throwing away his own life against his will and I seem powerless to help. I feel sure his generative life has suffered severely for lack of proper mating? My own sex life has gradually died and I have little left to offer him in that respect. He is a strong healthy man by nature and needs proper mating. I have pondered these things from every angle and do not know which way to turn. Perhaps I should take him out of business - away from all money constructions or perhaps I should give him his freedom that he might have a chance to work out his own salvation. If you have medical connected with your institute who could treat him and keep him under surveillance perhaps I should bring him there for treatment. Perhaps I should place him in a sanitorium under other care than my own. I am writing frankly to you hoping and praying you may be able to help me save him from himself. I am enclosing ten dollars for another reading and hope you will be good enough to help me right away and forgive my negligence in writing as it has been almost impossible to find a time away from him to write and I did not desire it advisable to tell him as yet about the reading. Hoping I may hear from you very soon and thanking you for your kindness.
I remain sincerely yours, Mrs. […]
P.S. We have 2 grown daughters of our own and an adopted son of 12.

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Since receiving the letter from your secretary in August, giving me the appointment for Sept 1st which I had to cancel. Mr. [4827]‘s whereabouts have been so uncertain I have not been able to give a location for him. However, so many things have developed in the meantime that it has become necessary for me to make some definite decisions very soon or he will break us completely. He has placed me in such an embarassing position that I hardly know which way to turn to pull out. If you will kindly set the earliest possible date for a reading I will wire his location the evening before.
Dr. Ketchum wishes to ask this question: Is Mr. [4827]‘s condition in regard to money and gambling a normal or abnormal condition.
Can he be cured of gambling, if so by what means?
Would it be better for him to get out of business and money contact altogether? Should he have a complete change of surroundings. Should he sell his business entirely and do something else? Would he be better off separated from his wife?
Any suggestions of any kind or any help you can give will be greatly appreciated and carefully followed. The Doctor finished the serum treatments which seemed to improve his physical condition a great deal. The last treatment brought no reaction whatsoever.
Hoping to hear from you soon
I remain Sincerely, Mrs. […]
