This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 322 Grafton Avenue, Dayton, Ohio, this 30th day of September, 1924, in accordance with request made by his mother, Mrs. […], via friend, Mr. Robert Bullock.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly and tell me the conditions you find at the present time. You will also give the cause of the existing conditions and the treatment and cure for this body.

2. EC: Now we find there are some conditions that are abnormal in this body. While we find the body very good throughout in many respects, there are those conditions in the body of the nature that affects the subliminal proclivities of the body in such a manner that the physical conditions become apparent in the body, causing the distress between the sympathetic, cerebro-spinal and the subliminal forces in the entity. The body is much bettered from this condition at the present time than it has been in the past. The correcting of the cerebro-spinal centers over the system has been very beneficial to the body.

3. We find that in the region of the 2nd and 3rd lumbar plexuses there have been those conditions that with the age, the development, the change in the body, that the connection between the nerves of the system that add to the genital organism and those of the pineal center and gland have removed the coordination. This produced by this subjection of these centers that receive the nutriment from the system from this center in this, and the reaction and the coordination between the system and the blood supply causes the change between the body and subjugating the body to such conditions as to produce the mental forces to become in that condition of subjugation to the psychic forces in this entity, the body at such times becoming subnormal in circulation, abnormal in nerve supply, and the contraction of these forces produces the unconscious to the mental body, accentuating mental activity after such condition has found its equilibrium, and the circulation and nerve supply coordinate again. The condition in the body has nothing whatever to do with the functioning of the organs of the system as organs, only affecting the blood supply, the nerve forces and especially those connections between the nerve system, the subliminal forces, the subconscious forces of the body, and that as between the physical and that in the pineal nerve and gland.

4. Then to correct, to bring the correct condition to this body, keep more of the conditions in the body of the correction through those manipulations that will bring perfect coordination throughout the whole pelvic system and genital system, and the nerves that connect same with the pineal nerve and gland; taking at times those properties in the system that will produce the incentive in nerve reaction in pineal gland in genital system, those properties as found in the tea made from Maypop, or Maypop Bitters. These may be found in Chattanooga, Tenn., in Birmingham, Alabama, Five Points Drug Store. These properties would only be taken half a teaspoonful in glass of water about three times each week. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, each week, until at least four ounces have been taken.

5. Keep those conditions in the body and those vibrations as would be accorded by the deep manipulation, given rather osteopathically than chiropractically, for the muscles, the tissue, the nerve ganglion in the system must coordinate properly, and we will find we will bring the body to the normal conditions.

6. Well that the body understand that the greater forces in its individual self may be reached through the subliminal, through the psychic forces as manifest in itself, and make and bring itself under the subjugation of the I AM within the entity. Well that those forces or activities of the developing of the body to that state of manhood wherein the usage of all the functionings of the system, especially relating to that of the genitive system be well understood, and that the forces ever of self must be kept in touch with those Divine forces that give the understanding of the individual self. Ever remembering that the body of the entity is the temple of the Creator, and that the sacrifice of self is only that reasonable service* needed to bring the best developing of the entity in any walk of life that it may choose, and ever remembering that “Whatsoever a man soweth that must he also reap”* and that the better forces in self will be found in making the meditations of the heart, of the soul, of the body, ever receptive to the words of the great I AM within each and every entity.

7. Following in that way that presents the body wholly and acceptable unto Him, without spot, without blemish.*

R1. 10/1/24 EC’s letter to [4844]‘s mother: “I am enclosing you, herewith, a copy of the reading as gotten yesterday for your son. I feel very sure, judging from experiences of others, that if you can have your son to carry out the suggestions as given here that he will have no more trouble regarding this condition.

“As you will note, the treatments as were given by the chiropractor were quite beneficial, and more so his determination to go on with his school work, but I think it is very necessary that these be worked together, and I would certainly insist that he have a good osteopath to treat him at least two or three times a week.

“I will thank you if you will let me hear from you from time to time, because I’m very anxious to follow out the results as obtained by adhering to the suggestions given on such conditions. I thank you also for the contribution to the work and please be sure to remember that I desire to be of help whenever possible.”

R2. 11/21/24 Mother’s letter to EC: “I am writing to tell you about my son again as you asked me.

“Whether he is better or not, I don’t know. He doesn’t fall now, but he walks asleep night or day with his eyes closed. He moves like a shadow, noiseless, very swift, goes anywhere. He seems like he is in a trance. He will do perfectly normal acts during this trance - go to the table, eat, pass food to others, know when to get up, will answer questions part of the time, talk and tell some things, only answer one person in several, will not answer or notice anything the others may say. Seems he has his mind on this one, whoever it may be. Seems to tell if we are watching him, will hide, run away.

“No one knew his brother was in town one night last week. He was in his room working on his school work, he looked up, did just the same act as looking at his wrist watch, said, […]‘s at the Hotel in room no. 242. All, a crowd of his schoolmates & brother were in the room with him. Of course, they told him no, he wasn’t there. Tried to keep him from going (he is insistent, if you cross him and strong as iron) they had to let him go. They followed him. He went to this room, knocked the door. […], his oldest brother WAS THERE in bed. He walked in, said hello […], how are you?, turned around went on back to the barracks of school (he was in Staunton, Military School then). He [4844], says or tells in this trance he was hypnotized last May, tells all about and describes the man. Says the man told him he would be under his influence most of the time for five or six months and he would have some wonderful events to take place in his life during this time. All these things I have told you about took place last week. He stayed in this trance little more than 32 hr. before waking. We couldn’t wake him at school. He said he had to go over to Fishburn School, 25 miles away to a certain man there and then he could wake up. Would answer his boy friend whom he knew at that school and friend of his at home. We couldn’t hold him. We let him go. Sure enough, he went to this man, lay down on the bed and woke up natural in less than a minute, rubbed his eyes and forehead and was startled to know he was there and asks why he is there and what’s the matter, always. These events are startling the whole community. We are more than alarmed. We know not what to do. His physical health seems to be perfect in every way, good appetite, perfectly alright except this. He will go in these trances, walking along, sitting, asleep, anytime, anywhere. Sometimes it lasts a short time. If in any way, you will diagnose, or make another reading of him, please do, and as early as convenient, please. We are disturbed nearly to death over him. He is now at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md. in Phipps Clinic, department 3. We had to put him somewhere for confinement. He ran away from us. Please make another reading and tell me what you find now. The maypop bitters I have gotten. Is this 4 oz. enough to give him? How long will the affect last? Hoping to hear from you at your earliest convenience.

“P.S. He works examples, writes letters, goes to the P.O. and gets out his mail, gave the others to his brother, the act as normal as ever was performed.”

R3. 11/25/24 EC’s letter to [4844]‘s mother: “Have yours of the 21st and thank you very much for letting me hear from you. It’s certainly interesting, from more than one standpoint, the things you tell me; yet I am sure this condition gives you a great deal of worry and anxiety. I believe, however, it would be well for us to include in the next reading a physical, mental and spiritual reading. We can perhaps gain the correlation of these conditions with your son. We cannot make this before Friday, December 5th, at 11:00 A.M. Please wire me on the 4th where your son will be on the morning of the 5th, 11:00 A.M. Central Standard Time. You, of course, will know whether you will have Eastern Time or Central Time there.

“Certainly trust we can be of a great deal of service to you.”

R4. 12/7/24 [4844]‘s mother’s letter to EC: “Your letter received, noted with interest. Hoping you can locate all his trouble. Friday morning [4844] will be in Johns Hopkins Hospital in department, Phipps Clinic - 3, at the time you said, 11:00 A.M. As I told you before in my last letter, he seems to be perfectly alright except just at these times. Have come the last three times about 20 to 23 days apart, lasting two days before waking. This period lasting for 4 or 5 days, then he goes on again. He didn’t fall at all this time. From the 11 to the 15 of this month will bring it around again, if he does as he has three times before. I will wire you on Thursday morning just where he will be.”

R5. 12/10/24 EC’s letter to [4844]‘s mother: “I have your letter and also your wire regarding the reading for your son, [4844]. I am sorry indeed to tell you that owing to circumstances over which I have no control, we were unable to make this reading for you on the date set. The young lady who was my secretary Gladys Davis], received word [12/2/24] the morning that we were to give the reading that her father had died suddenly. So of course, we were unable to get any one in time to have the reading that day.

“If it will be satisfactory, we will change this date to Tuesday, December 16, 11 A.M. Please let me know at once where the young man will be at that time and I trust we will be able to keep the appointment.

“I am certainly in hopes that he missed his bad time this time, as I believe you said it was just about the time one of these spells was due to occur again.”

R6. 12/15/24 Mother’s letter to EC: “Yes sir, please make the reading as you last suggested, physical, mental and spiritual on December 16.

“He will be at Johns Hopkins Hospital department, Phipps Clinic - 3. After Wednesday, he will not be there. Hoping you will be successful.”

B1. 9/14/24 Mother’s letter to EC: “Having heard of you through a friend of mine: I’m writing you hoping you can diagnose my son’s trouble and at least, give me some advice about him. He is not quite 15 years old. Last year, he went to a military school, made very good in all his work, studied into much, not TOO much, we didn’t think. After Xmas he would be going along anywhere, very suddenly he would fall unnecessarily - stay that way from 5 min. to an hr. sometimes longer. At first when he commenced these attacks, he would lie still, only roll his head and rub his forehead, in a few minutes wake up, just as nothing had happened. He began falling oftener, until, it was several times a day. He had these attacks at night while asleep. We could tell by his breathing. He would breathe very deep and long, would keep on lying, seemingly asleep. Finally he commenced getting up walking in his sleep, going out, up the street, or anywhere. He walked with his eyes closed, hands extended a little in front: anywhere he wanted to go or anything he thought of, he wanted to do. While awake, he would go to sleep and get up and start; we would take hold of him, bring him back, he would turn and start back again several times, unless we let him walk out, what he wanted to do. Along now, when he falls, in a few minutes, he will begin talking and tell whats on his mind to do, get rite up, and start. Now, he will do this in the daytime anytime. When he goes to sleep, when he wakes up, he tells us he dreamed, all, and everything he does. We were very uneasy one time, fearing epilepsy. Now he doesn’t show any signs of it, only just as I have told you. Have had him examined by some specialist, had several other Drs. much (?) agree as seem to know his trouble. All advise a different treatment. He is very bright minded, easy to learn, fast in his acts, plays the piano, draws well, can do anything, he wants to. He is a puzzle to everybody, that has seen and heard of him. We have had him under treatment of a Chiropractor Dr. for 30 days. For 20 days, he has been alright in every way seemingly. Stopped it all, at once, hasn’t done either in the 20 days as we know of. We have such little faith in the treatment, we stopped it. He seems to be alright rite now. How long it will last we don’t know. He is perfectly well, has always been very healthy, not fat or lean, just a big nice, well developed boy. Can and will you, tell me his trouble, what its caused from and will it return? and can he be cured? Having heard of you through Mr. Robt. Bullock and friend, I’m taking the privilege of asking you this, as we are so disturbed over him and no one seems to understand his trouble. Hoping to hear from you at your earliest convenience.”

B2. 9/22/24 EC’s letter to [4844]‘s mother: “I have yours of the 14th, with reference to a reading for your son’s physical conditions. I shall be very glad to undertake this for you, and I hope that I can prove to be of as much assistance in your son’s condition as I have in numbers of cases where there were similar conditions, as you give regarding your son. However, I do not promise anything. I can only tell you of the experiences of thousands of others, whom I have, through this Psychic Work, given the suggestions that when they were followed out have proven of untold benefit. These conditions, however, must be strictly adhered to:

“First: There must be the sincere desire of the person wishing the assistance, or of one responsible for the physical and spiritual life of the individual.

“Second: There must be sufficient faith in the work and report of same to carry out the suggestions as given, to the letter, as far as possible, irrespective of what others may think.

“Third: There must be the awakening in the individual desiring the help, the possibility and belief in a Divine power being capable of giving the assistance desired.

“I am enclosing you, herewith, the regular application card. Will ask that you fill in the young man’s full name and the address that he will be on the day and hour set for the reading, if you desire it made. Please return this card at once, with whatever remuneration that you desire to contribute to the Work. We do not make a specific charge. We ask that people contribute according to their ability.

“Please let us know regarding this at once, for we do not wish to keep someone else on the waiting list when those we have given appointments do not wish the reading made.”

B3. 9/24/24 Mother’s letter to EC: “Since first writing you about my son he seemed to get better, but know he is not clear of his trouble. We let him go back to school, at Staunton, Va. (a military school he attended last year). He was more than anxious to go back. Everything he wants to do, if, we don’t let him go or do, he will get up and do it, in these subconscious states. He is exceedingly bright, in anything he wants to do. He is perfectly well and normal in every way except when he falls and in one of these subconscious ways, When he wakes up, he is perfectly alright.

“Sometimes he falls, after then, he will go a long time without any sign of it at all.

“Sincerely hoping you can diagnose his trouble.”
