GC: You will give the physical, mental and spiritual conditions of this body at the present time, answering the following questions in a clear and understandable manner:
-
What causes this lapse of memory and suppression of normal mental forces? Is this produced through a physical condition or through a mental, and what may be done to relieve or ward off these conditions? 2. Does the work or labor in the school at Staunton, Va., have anything to do with this physical condition?
-
EC: Now, we find in some respects the body has lapsed from the condition as existed when we had this here before. There are other conditions that exist in the system, in the awakening of the Lyden [Leydig] gland and in the development of the genital system in its connection with the pineal gland and the effect as is produced in the system when such is raised to an exaggerated state of action, plus the force as is exhibited in the psychic in the entity and the manifestations that are exhibited under such conditions as lie between the subconscious and the normal mind.
-
Now, in the condition that arises then in the body when the lapse of memory occurs, we find there are the awakening of the subnormal action of the normal functionings. Hence the body at such times comes under that control that gives the expression to the normal to function under such conditions. In that far the body comes under the influence then of other minds and does that in the abnormal way as is suggested by that subconscious mind. Then, we see, the condition partakes of the physical, of the mental, having an abstract reaction in the mental and in the physical forces of body. This, then, as we see, must be treated in the manner in keeping with the existent conditions. This subconscious reaction at such times may be from any individual whom the body contacts at that moment. Then is not of an individual hallucination but of the individual’s imagination through whom such subjugation is affected. This, then, has nothing to do with the work as is implied in the school. Rather this (the work), with the normal functioning of system, would be to the development of the individual or entity.
-
The Bitters or the Maypop as given may be given more often, in small quantities, but do not accord the body Bromides that will affect the nerve system and cause the eruptions from same on body.
-
Do give more of the osteopathic forces to the body, and when these are being given let the mental forces be subjugated, the normal forces be subjugated, that the suggestions as given at time physical forces are being corrected will receive the same correction for mental and for the correlation between normal, subnormal, normal and subconscious forces in the body. In this manner we will find we will bring the normal condition to this body.
-
Be well, unless the acts, the actions, the reactions, in the mental forces of the body can be watched over in such times in sleep and in diet by someone that the body not be in school until the normal conditions are well balanced, well correlated in system, for as we see this is of the condition that relates to physical, to mental and to subconscious forces. Not of a physical as is produced in spasmodic conditions affecting the mental forces and producing any relaxation that would bring a mental degeneration, the degeneration being of a physical act itself, not in mental forces. Reaction as brought in mental forces produced by conditions in physical.
-
Do that and we will bring the better conditions and remove these spells, these hallucinations from this body, [4844].
-
(Q) How often may the Maypop Bitters be given, and in what quantities? (A) If given often; that is, two or three times a day, small quantity, six to eight drops. If given once each day, or twice each day, half teaspoonful may be given.
The osteopathic treatments should be given at least every other day, until the body assimilates and eliminates nominally, whether normal but nominally.
-
(Q) Is there some person who has this influence over this entity to cause these spells? (A) As given. Any individual may affect. Just the same as any individual may assist. Better the one who understands the condition when the osteopathic or manipulations are given, for then the corrections, the suggestions to the subconscious, will be in keeping with that being corrected in physical.
-
(Q) Who would be the one to give these treatments that would understand this condition? (A) Anyone that understands the relation between subconscious and conscious forces.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/21/25 EC’s letter to mother:
“I have yours of the 15th regarding [4844] and his condition. I’m indeed sorry to know that he has had a return of this condition in such a way that makes it an anxious condition regarding the outcome of same. I certainly appreciate your confidence and your faith in what I have been trying to do, and I am bound to believe from past experiences, with so many others, that if you will but adhere to the suggestions as are given that you will find the same wonderful results for him as many other people have gotten. I know of two or three people, one man especially, whom I would like to have treat [4844]. This may be out of the question, but under the circumstances I believe it would be justifiable if its possible for you to have same done. This is Dr. A. C. Lane of Griffin, Ga.
“You will see the enclosed reading goes rather more into detail regarding this condition than the others have, for you will see from the questions that we’ve tried to ask that it is what we might expect, so I’m in hopes that this will prove the correct thing and will assist you in gaining the understanding necessary for a full recovery.
“Now you asked to make it specific as to whether this was epilepsy or not. You will see from what is said that the Forces, whatever they are from which this is obtained, do not consider this as epilepsy, though my wife did not have the opportunity to ask this question direct.
“Trusting that you will keep me acquainted with the development, and assuring you I desire to be of assistance if possible, I am”
R2. 3/19/25 Mother’s letter to EC:
“Doubtless you think you are not going to hear from [4844] and I again, neither to get the contribution for the last reading, for which I thank you so much, also for the special delivery. Would written before. Have been waiting to see how he would develop. He is so strange. No one I have taken him to or seen him has ever seen anybody like him, or heard of a case like it. He has developed like anybody with two personalities than anything else now seems. He keeps changing. Now its warm weather, he complains of being tired if he exerts himself much. You referred to some Dr. in Griffin, Ga. You would like for him to treat [4844]. Is he a specialist? Medical or Psychic Dr.? Do you think he could do better than your suggestions? I am following your directions very forcibly. We hope and sometimes think he is better. I know he is better in some ways and changed so much in others, it’s difficult to tell whether he is better or not. Ever since you sent me the last reading, have been giving 1/2 teaspoonful once a day. In all have given him 6 oz. Am I giving too much, too often and must I continue it. Sometimes I am afraid I’m giving too much maybe, yet I hope so strong it’s doing him good. I kept answers. Didn’t you tell me once this Bitters was a nerve builder and harmless otherwise? Will the effect last longer than when taking. He may not be better permanently, I just hope so strong, he IS better. I believe he is same. He is taking the Osteopathy treatments every other day by a local osteopath-physican. He knows nothing of the psychic work. It’s the only opportunity I had. Are his treatments alright? By waiting so long hope I haven’t caused all of you to lose confidence in me. Would be glad to contribute more. This is all I’m able to do. Thanking you so much for your kindness and information. Wishing you success in your undertakings.”
R3. 3/25/25 EC’s letter to [4844]‘s mother:
“Very glad to have yours of the 19th, also to have the report from [4844]. I’m glad to know that he is some better, and I hope the developments from time to time will prove that this is of a permanent nature and that he will be entirely relieved from this trouble. I am sure from what you say of the case, this is certainly a most interesting study from a psychological and pathological standpoint.
“As to Dr. A. C. Layne of Griffin, Ga., he and his wife are specialists (Dr. Layne especially) in Psycho-Analysis. He is of the osteopathic school, and I believe he would be able to carry out the suggestions as I have given, for he understands the Work. Not that I am questioning the abilities of your local osteopath, but that Dr. Layne could better carry out the suggestions as are to be given to overcome that condition of a Psycho-Analytical state, necessary to be given while the osteopathic treatment is being accorded the body. Perhaps, if your local man understands this, he may do just as well as Dr. Layne, but Dr. Layne is the gentleman who discovered that I had the powers as are accredited me by others.
“I do not think the quantity of the Bitters that you are giving is detrimental, for there is no narcotic but only a nerve stimulant, and of a vegetable nature.
“I’m certainly very much in hopes that you will let me hear from you from time to time, for I assure you I am vitally interested in [4844]‘s condition, and wish if possible to be of some assistance in his gaining his normal good health.
“We thank you for your contributions to the Work, and hope that we may have you enrolled as a member of our Association, whether you are able or feel inclined to contribute more at this time or not, but we hope to very soon be able to send out the findings of the Association as regarding the Work, and of course we only want to send this to people who are vitally interested in what we’re trying to do.
“Again thanking you, and hoping to hear from you, with kindest personal regards to you and [4844]…”
R4. 7/28/60 Dr. Pahnke’s letter regarding condition for his research returned to him marked - “UNKNOWN”.
Notes on EPILEPSY cases from the Edgar Cayce records made by Walter N. Pahnke, M.D. July, 1960 at A.R.E., Virginia Beach, Virginia
The following notes were taken on cases as read and are merely the opinion of the abstractor at the time he read the case plus the correspondence. The main value of these notes is that they give some indication of what the exact diagnosis in each case may or may not be.
Case [4844]. Given in 1924. 15 year old male. This case was classified in group 3. The patient had been through Johns Hopkins and the diagnosis was given that the patient did not have epilepsy. However, the parents said that the doctors did not give any specific diagnosis. The reading itself did not call it epilepsy either, although Maypop Bitters and manipulation were suggested. The description of the case seemed to indicate there was a split in personality. The patient seemed to be a very good hypnotic subject. There was no adequate follow-up.
