This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of December, 1932, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [4873], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. [4628].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis, Hugh Lynn Cayce and L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 3:15 to 3:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York, N.Y. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here.
-
Now, as we find, there are some disturbing factors in the physical functioning of the body, [4873]. While in many respects the general physical conditions are very good, there are some indications of disturbed forces that with correction would bring for the body better conditions.
-
These have to do with specific conditions as well as some general conditions that are of a constitutional nature, or have been of long standing; thus making the necessity of some definite changes to bring about corrections in this direction.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [4873] we are speaking of:
-
The BLOOD SUPPLY is very good, both as to quantity and quality. The elements show for very good coagulation; some disturbances in the present from cold and congestion, where there has been some strain on the general system. This is being cared for, however, by the general resistance in the system.
-
In the NERVE SYSTEM and SYSTEMS, here we find some of those conditions of the specific nature and constitutional nature that disturb the general equilibrium of the body.
-
The body has had in times back, or for some periods, those conditions which have produced the inactivity of the eliminations in the general alimentary canal. With this tendency for the overloading or the dilation of the colon, and with the strain and lack of proper movement in the muscular forces of the system (and with these making for tendencies in the nerve reactions to become lax), there has been the allowing of folds or accumulations in the form of hemorrhoids, that make for distress when there are the activities of the system at some periods.
-
Then, this is both a constitutional and specific condition, and a general debilitation in the nerve forces, which makes for the improper contraction through the muscular activities of this portion of the body.
-
These conditions in the general system are from the last dorsal vertebra and from the 3rd and 4th lumbar plexus area. These make for at times (though in times back there were periods when there were the greater distresses in these particular centers or areas) acute pain, or dull heaviness at others making the body aware of the disorders in the system.
-
In the general functioning of the ORGANS, these we find are very good in most directions; especially so are there those mental reactions that are of the discerning and discernment in the activities of the body, considering the age or the activities to which and through which the body physically and mentally has passed. The body is alive, then, to the conditions about self in all phases of human - HUMAN - experience.
-
Then, in meeting the needs of the conditions as we find them, for correcting the conditions that disturb the body:
-
First there should be those precautions as to the manner and character of diet, that there is kept those properties which have the greater tendency towards the alkalin, and that are a tendency for the general rebuilding of the system. Not those foods so much that would make for roughness (that would make for laxness in the assimilating and digestive system), but those that are well-balanced in the rebuilding and replenishing for both the blood and the nerve supply of the body.
-
Also we would have the manipulations that may be given in the form or corrections WITH manipulations, especially in those areas indicated.
-
For an antiseptic and to reduce the tendencies of plethora in those portions that cause distress, use the ointment known as Tim. This will act with the manipulative forces to not only reduce the swelling and the painfulness, but to produce or cause coagulation such as to do away with those protuberances which make for the distress.
-
A very helpful exercise each morning and evening, also, would be the BENDING exercise with the hands raised high above the head, bending forward to bring the hands as close to the floor as possible. Do this for two or three minutes morning and evening.
-
To relieve the tendency for contraction, where there has been the disturbance of the structural portions in the right lower portion of the femur, or the shin bone, use a massage with equal parts tincture of myrrh and olive oil. This will cause the absorbing of the greater amount of the tissue that has been thickened, by nature attempting to adjust itself under the unusual conditions. With this it will be found unnecessary for the removal by operation, for the activity of both the properties will work together with the action of the general system (that will be aided in the eliminating of those drosses that are carried into the circulation for the general physical condition), for the betterment of the general physical conditions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
The activities of the massage, especially on the lower limb, should be once each day. Heat the myrrh and add the oil. (Yes, this is opposite from what has usually been given, but HEAT the MYRRH and stir in the oil.) This doesn’t mean boiling, but heat and mix together; for this will make for more of an ointment (while the other would remain in a different solution entirely).
-
The manipulations and adjustments would be given twice each week, once as a general treatment and the other more as the adjustments.
-
Following each stool the Tim Ointment should be used, or after the body is ready for retiring. This will be found to be more effective than any other application.
-
Ready for questions [and in same breath:].
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/16/32 EC’s ltr. to [4873]:
My dear Mrs. [4873]:
I wish it were possible for me to talk with you in person regarding the information that we are sending. I trust you will find in this that which will bring to you the desired results. From our experience we have found that those who have followed the suggestions have gotten the results that were promised. I am sure you have been putting some faith and confidence in this information, and trust it will not be disappointing.
One of the things suggested here for you (the Tim ointment) has been compounded from directions given in a reading. We will have to get this prepared for you, if you desire to use it. Wherever it has been used as suggested it has been declared to be the most effective remedy ever used. It has cured many cases of hemorrhoids.
I’ll be very anxious to hear from you, and to know your reactions to the reading.
When I am in New York again I hope that I may have the pleasure of meeting and talking with you personally.
Appreciating your interest, and hoping to have been of service, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

R2. 12/17/32 Letter: ”…I received your reading this morning and I would like very much to have you send me a jar of the ‘Tim’ ointment prepared according to your directions. I want to try the heated tincture and olive oil and I could not quite understand whether you mean that I must go to an osteopath for you say ‘the manipulations and adjustments would be given twice each week, once as a general treatment and the other more as an adjustment.’ Is there anyone that you can recommend, and that you have had your patients have success with, and how do I tell him what to do? A trained Swedish masseur is not what you mean, is it? I know of several Swedish women.
“I stayed on my sofa Thursday, from 3 o’clock until 4 on December 15th in my bedroom and after a few minutes I went to sleep and awakened at 4:00 by hearing the telephone ring.
“If you do come to New York I hope you will let me know so that I can have the pleasure of talking my case over with you. Will you tell me what you charge for extra readings. Several have asked me. I feel that you are going to help me…”
R3. 12/19/32 EC’s ltr. to [4873]:
My dear Mrs. [4873]:
Yours of the 17th has just been received. I am glad the reading has reached you, and that you feel it will be worth while to follow the suggestions given.
We have never made the Tim Ointment to sell, so just now I haven’t any on hand, but we are having some prepared and should be able to send it to you by the latter part of the week. I hope this will not be too great an inconvenience to have to wait on it.
The tincture of myrrh and olive oil may be applied by yourself or made in the evening when you are ready to retire, even better than it could be done by an osteopath.
Yes, from our experience with the readings, I feel that the treatments (manipulations and adjustments) should be applied by a regular osteopath. Often we have the suggestion in a reading that the Swedish treatments would be more effective, but as your reading suggests that one treatment be a manipulation and the next an adjustment osteopathically, I would suggest that you see Dr. Grace Berger, 77 Park Avenue. Dr. Berger knows something of this work, and you may show the reading to her if you so desire. If you tell her about it, she will no doubt ask you to let her read the information given. There are several sources through which you might get these treatments, but I believe Dr. Berger is better acquainted with this work than possibly anyone near you. I am very sure that you will find her quite efficient, and feel she will cooperate with you in getting all your treatments (that is, those you cannot apply better yourself).
I am very thankful for the Christmas Message, and think it very beautiful. I appreciate your sending one.
We have here in Norfolk a number of individuals in a study group who are preparing lessons directed by the readings themselves, respecting spiritual thought and enlightenment. They have been working on this for more than a year, and have some beautiful lessons. I believe. A few days ago one portion of the group, that is particularly interested in a phase of the work, asked for a Christmas Message. I am enclosing a little typewritten copy of it, which I hope you will enjoy as we have. [See 281-14, Par. 5-A, 7-A.]
I am very thankful to you for speaking to friends. As you know, the Associate Membership including the first reading is
20.00. Subsequent readings for members are10.00 each. I hope that I may be a channel for some service to you and many of your friends.Thank you very much for the invitation to call when I am next in New York. I would love very much to talk with you about our work.
Hoping that I may be able to send the ointment during this week, trusting you will find the help in applying the suggestions given, and with all good wishes for a Merry, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

R4. 12/30/32 GD’s note: Mrs. [4873]‘s son, [4872], obtained a reading while EC was in New York, at which Mrs. [4873] and her son were present.
R5. 1/6/33 EC’s ltr. to [4873]:
My dear Mrs. [4873]:
At last I have succeeded in getting the Tim Ointment for you. This required getting several different ingredients, which took more time than we anticipated. I hope it has arrived alright.
Now, with the application, this - as indicated - is to be applied locally. From past experience I am sure you will find that it will reduce the irritation, stop the bleeding, and gradually absorb all the disturbing forces. It will be necessary though, that you follow the suggestions for the exercise. No doubt this will be rather aggravating to you at first, but gradually you will be able to carry it out alright.
Now, in the preparation of the myrrh and olive oil for rubbing the limb - if you will take tablespoonful of the myrrh, let this heat (not boil) and then stir in the oil, I am sure you will find it will combine. It is something you will have to prepare often, for you will use almost this much in at least two treatments, or perhaps more - but that is about the proportion and amount to use at a time. If you will follow this, I am sure you will find great relief.
As for the general massage, I do not know a better suggestion than that you see Dr. Berger, or - if your son has found Mr. Reilly satisfactory, that you see him. I would suggest personally, however, that you use Dr. Berger; although I know this is not in line with what some of the other people there would say.
I’ll be very glad to hear from you and to know just what results you have, for I am sure you will get results. Dr. Berger would be able to go over the reading with you, and she would be very well in outlining the diet.
Hoping this finds you feeling the very best, appreciating your giving me the opportunity to talk with you for a few minutes, trusting that through the grace of the Father we may all be of greater help to our fellow man through out acquaintance, I am, with kindest personal regards,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

R7. 1/10/33 Letter: ”…At last the ‘Tim’ arrived yesterday. Will you please send me two more jars for Dr. Berger says this is not enough. I had several treatments with Reilly but the place is hard for me to go to, so today I tried Dr. Berger. Both were good. Will you tell me if I could have a prescription for ‘Tim’. I am sure that with all the wholesale drug stores that New York City has that I could have it put up and it would save these long delays. If you do not want to send the prescription I will pay you to send me two more jars. I have to go away so I would like it immediately…”
R8. 1/13/33 EC’s ltr. to [4873]:
Dear Mrs. [4873]:
We were certainly sorry of the delay in getting the Tim to you. The one who had been preparing this for us had some difficulty in getting some of the ingredients.
I hope you have already found relief with the use of this. We are shipping to you three more jars of different sizes, as they are the only containers we have at the present time.
It might be very well that you have a formula for the Tim, but we are hoping to be able sometime in the near future to put it on the market through the regular channels. We trust you will not feel we are trying to keep anything from you, for we will be more than glad to see that you get any amount of it as fast as we are able to get it put together.
I am hoping and believing that you will find Dr. Berger quite in sympathy, very efficient and capable, and that you will receive wonderful results.
For a few days after my return from New York I was quite unwell, as I contracted a very deep cold, but I am feeling much better and we are getting back to our regular routine.
I trust that both you and Mr. [4872] are feeling greatly improved, and that we may hear from you.
With all good wishes, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

P.S. Sometime ago you asked for information concerning a Life Reading. We are enclosing some explanatory data on this type of reading, which I believe you will find interesting.
R9. 1/14/33 Dr. Grace C. Berger’s letter: ”…Thank you for referring Mrs. [4873] to me. I anticipate having good results with her… She tells me at one time she had excellent results with an osteopath in Washington and has tried several here and not liking them, had wandered away from osteopathy. I hope I shall be able to live up to the recommendation given by you…”
R10. 1/18/33 Letter: ”…I want to thank you for sending the extra ‘Tim’ ointment. I have tried Dr. Grace Berger for a week and my ankle has been growing more and more painful by the minute. So I had to go to a regular surgeon today and my x-ray showed that a piece of the ankle bone was broken off and as this break happened last June I have suffered for seven months but never as much as I have these last three weeks. Mr. Reilly’s place is up one very long flight of stairs and that was the reason that I changed to Dr. Berger, but evidently it has not agreed with me and I had a treatment every day. She charges five dollars and Reilly charges three but I think my other trouble is just about the same. I have done everything that you suggested but both Reilly and Berger do not interpret your letter alike. So that is confusion… [See report she included here typed into her son’s case - [4872].]
“Do think of me in your prayers for I need a lot of courage and faith…”
R11. 1/21/33 EC’s ltr. to [4873]:
My dear Mrs. [4873]:
Yours of the 18th has been received. I hardly know just how to comment on some of the things you tell me. From the reading, and from what you say, I am inclined to believe that the doctors who have administered any treatment for you, so far as your ankle is concerned, have been overanxious and have caused more harm than good. Especially would this be indicated, when you say it has grown to be more and more painful all the time, and that Dr. Berger and Reilly disagree as to the correct interpretation of the reading. I understood from the reading that the applications for your ankle could be done better by yourself, at home, than by anyone else - in the evening, when you will be off your feet for some hours.
The treatments by the osteopath should only be to start the eliminations for the general system, rather than for the SPECIFIC condition, and to make the adjustments once a week in the spinal area mentioned.
But, I hope you have succeeded long before this in getting some application that has been most helpful; and that you have at least been relieved. Dr. Berger is quite competent, and should understand the readings as well as any, or better than many. Where such wonderful results are obtained from following the readings, it does seem a shame not to have a place where people may go who desire the suggestions followed to the letter, without having anything added to or taken from them. When the doctors want to stick in something, or feel they know better, then there’s no need of the reading at all. Just as I would see about the information for your son [4872]. The doctor may be exactly correct in saying that what he needs is to eat less and take more exercise; but there IS a physical disturbance that makes the condition possible and plausible. He may eat as little or as much as he wants, but that disturbance is going to be there until SOMEBODY removes the CAUSE! If he wanted to go to a physician in Boston in sympathy with this work, I would have given him the address of a man who was the secretary of the first group of medical people who undertook to study this phenomena; and he would have listened and not turned up his nose. He is quite as noted a physician as there is in Boston.
You may rest assured, Mrs. [4873] that each member of the group here - who are bandied so closely together in the Work will remember you in their prayers, asking that you have the courage, the faith, the “I WILL!” necessary to regain your health at this time. I verily believe, if there is one iota of truth in the readings, this truth is positive: No healing can come to a physical body save from one source, the Giver of Life itself. Whatever administration that may be given, whether drugs, the knife, mechanical massage, mechanical appliances of any kind or what not, it is only an expression or a manifestation of that same source of knowledge, power and light, LENT TO the individual in some particular field. Let’s not any of us think that we have it all. No sir! We are merely channels, and may be blessings to someone, if we keep our hearts, minds and souls awakened to the possibilities of the activities of the Fatherhood of God in each and every one of us. That’s our hope and prayer. We desire to work together with those who may minister to the needs of the minds, the souls, the bodies of our fellow man.
Appreciating your letter, hoping this finds you feeling much better, and with kindest personal regards to you and yours, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

My dear Mrs. [4873]:
When in New York last week I learned from your son (whom I saw for a few minutes) that you had met with rather a serious accident. I am very sorry, and hope you are experiencing very little or no trouble in getting relief. It must be very trying to be confined right at this time, but I hope you will soon be your normal good self again.
I trust you have found the ointment helpful in relieving the condition that has bothered you for some time. Know that we would be very glad to hear from you whenever you feel inclined to write.
With kindest personal regards and best wishes, I am

B1. 11/25/32 Letter: ”…I have just heard through a friend of mine, [Mrs. [4628]], about some wonderful cures of Mr. Edgar Cayce and I want to have these little books marked CAYCE on the front and a picture on the inside and some papers called IDEALS AND PURPOSES. Will you send me these sets and I enclose 9 cent in stamps. I want him to help me too. I have ‘bleeding piles’. Also I have been told by surgeons and the x-ray that I broke a little piece off the bone of my right ankle and, as I did it five months ago thinking it was only a bad sprain, I find it has knitted onto a nerve. I hear he [Edgar Cayce] may help me. Will you tell me what I have to do to get in touch with him?…”
B2. GD’s note: Mr. Cayce was in a melancholy mood the afternoon the above reading [4873-1] was given. We hoped that something funny would come through so that it would cheer him up. We all laughed aloud at the end of the reading when EC said “Ready for questions” and immediately, in the same breath, said “We are through for the present.”
