This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Virginia, this 22nd day of April, 1937, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [531] Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. EC: Yes - few moments late in keeping his own time.

2. We have the body, the enquiring mind, [531].

3. Much might be given the body-mind as respecting those changes that have come to the body since last we had same here.

4. There is that innate desire for knowledge, as respecting the influence of the unseen upon the visible manifested forces in the experience of human endeavor.

5. While these forces are in motion and active, or do act upon an individual, and with an individual, it is the coordinant expression that makes for soul development, soul awareness of the Christ-Consciousness being with the individual and a part of the desire of self.

6. Do not, as was the admonition of old, say “Who will ascend into heaven that we may have a vision or a message, or who shall come from over the sea?” For, lo, it is in thine own heart, thine own conscience; and in the temple of thine own body has He promised to meet thee, and indeed will His Spirit bear witness with thy spirit.

7. So he that looketh for a sign, or for a manifestation, other than that as may come in HIS way, seeketh in vain; for lo He standeth ever at the door of thine own heart. If ye will but open and let Him in, He will abide with thee, ever.

8. Ready for questions.

9. (Q) If possible, reply yes or no. Should the entity, [531], move with his family to Cuba? (A) Yes, it would be best. To be sure, there are many provisions, there are many circumstances that should be taken into consideration. But there is the innate call, and those things in the material expression are existent that - if the entity will apply that knowledge, that known in its experience - will make for a better environ for all concerned.

Know that it is not of self but the spirit of truth that may work in and through thee, that maketh thee not afraid.

10. (Q) Outside of the City of Havana properly - mention by name - if it comes to you such name - other wise state location in the Island of Cuba - where this entity will find contentment - both for his physical and spiritual welfare. (A) As to location or place, in that environ or surrounding where not only there is the compatibility in the way of social, political and economic conditions, but that in keeping with that in which the entity may engage itself.

As has been intimated, those things that are the fruits of the ground - as sugar, coffee, bread, and all the attributes, or the coordinating factors from these - are for the better environ or surrounding, making for the natural sources and thus producing that tension or attunement for the better development of the entity in the mental and material abilities.

It is then ever, for any soul, not the question as to what is the engaging activity but as to how well in same the entity serves those whom he contacts.

But these environs, or those surroundings where these considerations are given, would be then the place.

Near Havana, as an outlet - yes. But consider also the variations for the products that the entity may engage self in, and lose not sight of the duties, the obligations also to those - in a social, in an economic way and manner - that are dependent upon the body.

11. (Q) What as a hobby, as a pastime after work, do you recommend to this entity? (A) Such as these, as we find, should be rather as a responding to something within - than as a suggestion from outside.

Writing should be not only a hobby but as a part of the inner development.

As pastime, that having to do with photographic art would be well.

12. (Q) What type of writing should the entity do? (A) What may be termed as partially philosophical, but the approach more from that of the story type. Depicting, as it were, how, why, certain environs bring into the experience of individuals a closer association of certain types of religious activity. Or how, or why, various fruits of the soil have made and do make for certain characters of emotions in or under the climatic conditions or the like.

These, and such, are well; for there is sufficient humor in the entity and its experiences to not only be proficient in such but if so desired - not only for self-improvement and for the good it may bring to others, but for the remuneration it may bring also.

13. (Q) Is the desire of this entity to move caused by a fear, or a discontent, or an unstable physical condition? (A) Rather discontent, of the nature desiring more environs or surroundings of the natures that are a part of the inner self. How did He give? “Train a child when he is young and when he is old he will not depart from same.” What meanest this?

There are emotions, there are associations of the mental self that require some answer, some justification in its experience.

These may be attributed to fear, or to physical reactions, but body, mind, soul are one - and coordinate one with another in the better activities of any entity.

Then this entity, not the exception, finds the crying out of that image which has been set.

14. (Q) It has been said astrologically that the entity [531] did well in leaving Cuba and should not go back. Why is then such yearning to return? (A) As we have so oft given, astrological influences are only signs, urges. What is the better manner of culture of mind or of any material plant? Proper pruning, proper soil, proper environ? Or to be allowed to run loose? Or to be controlled?

So with the mind, with the body of individuals.

It is rather as has been given.

15. (Q) State specifically by names - what fruits of the grounds outside of sugar should be used for successful dealing by this entity, for his sustenance and support of his family? (A) As has been indicated.

16. (Q) In what other product or commodity should the entity deal, as an addenda, or as an alternative, to fruits of the grounds? (A) As has been indicated.

17. (Q) This entity, in its material, feels that there is a psychic calling - a possibility of developing psychically. Do you see, now, at this moment, any such possibility? Answer yes or no, if possible. (A) Yes. Each soul is a portion of the Divine, and that is the psychic or soul force which is a manifestation that cries as it were for expression.

In the material plane there are many manners of a manifestation of the beauty of love, of patience, of hope, of long suffering, that are the attributes of the psychic forces or soul forces in material plane.

Let the entity oft meditate, consistently, as this - using the thoughts expressed in the words we will give, and there will be found the attuning more and more to the influences that find expressions in varied manners. Not all are attuned alike, any more than any leaf upon a tree is the same as another, in form, in response, or what not - or any two blades of grass exactly the same.

Each soul then is, as these, attuned in its own individual application of the truth of His presence in each individual soul.

But let the meditation, the prayer, oft be:

HERE AM I, O GOD, MAKER OF ALL THAT IN THE EARTH DOES CRY FOR THE KNOWLEDGE, FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF THEE!

SHOW THOU, O GOD, THE WAY! LEAD THOU, IN BODY, IN MIND, THY SERVANT - WILLING, READY, TO DO THY BIDDINGS!

THOU HAST PROMISED THAT IN AND THROUGH THE CHRIST YE WILL HEAR WHEN WE CALL IN HIS NAME. WE SEEK TO KNOW THY WAY. LEAD THOU, O GOD, ON - IN CHRIST!

R1. 4/23/37 Letter from EC to [531]: “Don’t know that there is a word that I can add to the information as was received in last rdg., know I was glad to try, and as I have said to you before, if it answers to something within you, think on same. If not then forget it and let it be as if it was not.

“Wish might have good long talk with you. Feel the need of a friend, while have ideas, theories, experiences even of the life after death, but am human enough to believe I now understand better what is meant when it is said in the scripture, ‘Jesus wept.’

“Will be anxious to hear from you whenever you have the time to write. Hope this finds you and yours enjoying the best of health.”

R2. 4/25/37 [531]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Edgar: “Your letter of the 23rd, also reading. You MUST have read the questions prior to your trance, and they must have made a mental impression, which could not have been eradicated, while in your trance, unless such trance of self-hypnosis was of an advanced stage. May be am all wet, I don’t know, but you know I am immensely interested in this matter and I seek facts, while I feel that the reading is rather “vague” - it leaves me in a quandary - it does not come up to the point.

“If we as an association are trying to make use of your apparent capacities, let those capacities PROVE themselves, not in the mere faith or believe, but by such presentation as will convince an individual, by “getting” what he is asking for. A salesman knows what he wants, he wants it bad enough and he goes out and gets it. Such material procedure must invariably be backed by initiative or spiritual desire.

“In the first place I wasn’t late. I was there are 10:15 or so. At 2 minutes before 10:30 I again looked at the big clock therefore the innate desire to have you DO YOUR WORK was receptive to your communicating with my being or my soul or whatever you want to call it.

“While I appreciate the virtues of religious passages as comparison or examples of good fellowship and good behavior among humans, the statements of Jesus Christ, remember, while they set a beautiful example, should not be taken or made to influence the mind of any individual.

“Now read question and answer 1. [531-7, Par. 9-A] If there are any provisions, circumstances etc., while LEAVE me in a quandary about it, and why should it be BEST. Isn’t it a fact, that because I asked you to solve a problem for me, that YOU have been influenced and lead to agree with me? “Question 2 [531-7, Par. 10-A] - you don’t come up to the point, you don’t say such and such city or such and such a name, a precise location, because after all that social, political condition, is found in any community, be it an extensive or a non-extensive community.

“You must bear in mind my friend, that I am comforted by a desire to live and do well, and make others happy, while being happy myself. THERE MUST BE SOME REASON for my apparent unstable desires, and there must be a corrective, then too, there must be a definite, a traced span of life, of doing, to possible satisfy my ego, or keep me happy - that goal cannot be DEATH because I ignore what it is all about it, that goal must be an accomplishments, an ideal and idea, during my passing through life, while I live, while I know. I asked about a pastime - why not fishing?

“Question 4 [531-7, Par. 12-A] - I didn’t put it there, and all in all, this reading is not in accord with everyone of my expectations. A hypnotist, can go ahead and make you do something, and perhaps leave a lasting impression in a dormant mind, in a mind that has been commanded to ‘this or that’. Therefore in a mind that is receptive to invisible powers, to soul communion, to psychic powers, there can be impressed a guidance, just as a well balanced engineer designs a machine that performs accurately and efficiency.

“Question 8 [531-7, Par. 16-A] - it was not up to the point, and question 9 [531-7, Par. 17-A] is NOT what I aimed to accomplish. Just think what it will mean Cayce, if I could come to you and say, dog gone it boy, we did it, I felt it, we did something that science has been craving for, we accomplished a goal. That can be done by unison by some law, known to you more than to me. We cannot carry on this association work as in a boat in the high seas, we must solve the difficult problems.

“If there is a manifestation that cries, let’s dry the tears, just as when we know we plant a seed we watch over it, put fertilizer, and help it grow, then we even go as far as crossing a peach with an orange and making a new fruit.

“I have said there is something to your work, but I’ve got to be shown, and the fact that there is believe and faith, is all in your favor and my favor. The only thing is that I don’t like to tax you to capacity, but I feel, that we do not come up to the point, and while I don’t seek perfection, I think the best you do is to lay down, quietly, someday and THINK IT OVER.

“As you say, we will forget this reading.”

R3. 4/26/37 [Monday eve - at home] Letter to EC:

… ST. PHILADELPHIA

Dear Edgar:

“It is now 10:20 p.m. and it is raining - the Mrs., has gone to bed, so has my dear [1228] - who perhaps while I type, is now dreaming or possibly, unconsciously imbedding her being with some psychic power - cause after all, often I have prayed that she may develop such power, such ability.

“Your last reading is resting on my desk at the office, after having dropped you a note, by which I said, that somehow that reading was not “Edgar Cayce” himself, and this is possible because after all, you had a misfortune, the loss of your dear father and possibly, I allow, you have been upset. My request was not fair, was not fair, was improper, for a reading of the nature I wanted - a life plan, full of proofs.

“You see, just now I was glancing over all papers, and I miss the bulletins, the essays the notes, etc which you sent me, and now I am wondering how many replies did you get to that questionnaire INDIVIDUAL REPORT OF A PSYCHIC EXPERIENCE. These replies must be taken all with a grain of salt, as someone took the book of Dr. Carrell [Alexis Carrel, M.D.], but the thought is that we as an association of research must show some proof some facts which will make scientific research - because it is science - look like a peanut, next to the phenomena of psychic power - because I assume that SCIENCE knows little about psychic power, and just like nationalism may or may not upset ‘religion’ we must not let some so-called expert in science ‘pull the wool over our eyes’ but we must reason, we must prove our case, we must convince the skepticals, like […].

“In August 1935, we placed out a bulletin (Vol III, No. 12) which among other cited my case. [531-2] It must be admitted, that yes, I had just laid down my paper at that time, and it is true that, in my lack of knowledge of these matters and great belief, my mind was in unison, tuned with yours, I may say and somehow you ‘somewhat’ defined these matters in a more clear way to me - thus I saw and I believed! Now, considering that you have been taxed with so many readings for years, the death of your father and the fact that possibly in your last reading, my mind was not as attuned, as receptive, I will make allowances and forget in its entirety our last reading which did not - does not - answer my questions nor my questions were put to you as I wanted, and since you say ‘it makes it possible in one case and impossible in another’ we must seek a solution to that situation.

“We must seek truth, and we must check all findings, and inasmuch as mostly everyone in imbedded by curiosity, we must not attempt to solve our problems by satisfying the curious, but at that we must prove our cause…

“Now, I haven’t all your bulletins, and I am going to ask if it is permissible, and you and the association will permit me to ‘steal’ copy, quote and or adapt phrases, data, etc. from these bulletins to cover a book that I may or may not write - as I am rather impulsive, but a book that I expect to make someday for business men and others, based on this psychic situation which is occupying so much space in papers now-a-days. Let me know if I can use all these phrases that I see fit for my book and use them as if they were my own, considering that I may add from her and there, my own phraseology and anything that I see fit. So much for my spare time writing.

“Now, reverting back to the last reading, tonight I was reading at [1228-1] reading where you cite Venus, Jupiter, etc. while on the other hand, this I would say contradicts the statement you make in my last reading as to ‘astrology’.

“I wanted to get this off my chest this rainy night, and here it goes, for what it may be worth.

“If I am impatient and seek light, truth and guidance, that is part of my make up, so certainly the more intelligence guidance that illuminates my life, that gives me the knowledge that I am living, should be as intelligent as to direct my well being not to be impatient, to help me create a state of self satisfaction, or to help me meditate, and solve my life problems in such way as to make me valuable to humanity, while destroying ‘the pride that I may create by having such opportunity’ and to make me meek, humble, but yet, good, honorable, distinguished and respected for my accomplishments and knowledge, and in such accomplishment to give me the ‘freedom from worries’ to which I am entitled.

“Boy it can be done, just as it is possible to go ahead and ahead and write you know, and express myself in a way that I hope will show, I am a learner, a beginner, a seeker of light, truth, not curious, but a man who wants demonstrations that will convince him in such a way as to make him stop, look and listen - then with such, I can further strengthen my ability, I can further define my life plans, I can be as successful as I am entitled to be and my mind as well as my nerves can be settled, can be made to co-ordinate themselves so as to improve my physical being, and my mind, and my soul, so as to make me the river that carries the current, and is able to carry it, moderately and happily to the sea…

“I am ready whenever you are, and I know, that death will never take me away until I have accomplished each and everyone of my good desires, because as long as they are good, I am entitled to them - but how in the name of dry bananas, am I going to accomplish these things?

“So, that is that!

“So long, till my next outburst.” [531]

R4. 5/4/37 Letter to EC:

Dear [531]:-

“Thanks for both your letters of recent date, there is no need of my trying to give you this or that version of what was gotten. All the answers are in the record, no matter what we may think or say about the Book, ‘My spirit beareth witness with thy spirit’ and if you do not find it there, then it isn’t there. But [531], look this over again, see if you haven’t missed something, then if you haven’t discard it.

“Read this in the Ass’n Booklet [See Source File Key #254 for Ass’n Booklet of 2/37 in re 254-92.] as to what 37 years has taught us as to attitude. Maybe it is worth something, maybe not. But, do you honestly believe that were you convinced in any definite manner that it would make so much difference with you? Do you? Sure you want the truth, sure you do; so do we but it will come only by our own application of it. He was not wrong when He said, ‘Say not who will ascend into Heaven to bring him down, nor will come from over the seas that we may have a message, for lo, it is within thine own heart, to hear and to DO’ and that is the whole law.

“Yes wish to help, when ever where ever possible, cannot if I judge by experiences try and show signs or wonders, they come according to the seeker and their sincerity.

“Please don’t stop writing me, missed the breaks that have been more than you know, possibly can keep closer to them as begin to get acclimated to the new surroundings for me.

R5. 5/16/37 Mr. [531] wrote a friendly letter saying he was hoping to come to the June Congress with his wife and baby, and ending it: “Meanwhile, God bless you all.”

R6. 9/15/37 He wired for emergency appointment for Mrs. [1445].

R7. 10/10/38 EC wrote thanking Mr. [531] for agreeing to join in a word of prayer at the periods each day when he attempted to give the rdgs.

R8. 11/29/38 Letter to EC:

“In a few days I will be sending you $5.00, my contribution to the cause, and I wish to advise you that I will be listening to the WOR program with great interest.

“I will thank you advise Mrs. Dillman that I should like to be appointed as a representative, and my street address can be given as, … Street.

“On the matter of the study group supervised by Mrs. Verhoven, I should like to belong to this group as well.

“Incidentally, in one of your readings, you always emphasized ‘fruits of the ground’ for me, and I have just obtained an account of grapefruit, and I hope that it will develop, because I certainly need a lot of money to maintain the family during 1939.

Dear friend Cayce:

“I have not heard from you for some time but assume that you folks are progressing nicely. Attached please find my contribution check for five dollars and if I don’t write it is because I am trying to make both ends meet and I am busy trying to make both ends meet. I wish that this war would end so that men will come down to earth. I hope all of you folks are doing well and candidly I don’t go to Virginia Beach because it is too expensive for me.

“By the way, I assume that you must have been receiving some data in connection psychic phenomena along the lines of Dr. Rhine of Duke University. I was wondering if you could loan me the scripts of the broadcasts that you used to make over W.O.R. as I would like to read them and return them to you.

“For that matter I have been making some experiments myself at home and among my friends in connection with the matter and perhaps some day I may be able to send you some interesting experiences which you may want to have in your files.”

R10. 2/5/41 Letter to [531]:

Dear [531]:

“Guess dreams must really have a meaning - only last night or this morning I dreamed of you. Dreamed we went on a trip together on a big ocean Liner, don’t know just where but thought we were talking about Porti Rico, or some place like that and here this afternoon hear from you.

“Mighty glad to hear from you [531], hope every thing is well with you how is the Wife and little girl, tho guess she is getting to be a big girl now.

“Yes, really miss your letters, tho know am not much of a correspondent. Yes we are still trying to help here and and there and am sure from the reports, are doing some good. We have recently had offices built here joining the house - it is a gift from those we have tried to help, yes your name is on the honor role list and thank you for your enclosure today, we haven’t completed the job as yet and this will help a lot, but will be mighty nice when it is all complete we are all on our feet again. My wife hasn’t been very well had a bad fall a month or so ago, then the flu on top of that but is able to be about again am glad to say.

“Will speak to Hugh Lynn my son and if he has some of the script he used [on MYSTERIES OF THE MIND] am sure he will be glad to send same.

“Will be very glad to have any reports you would care to send us of your experiments. We have quite a collection, and have plenty of room for same now in the new Library - H.L. is getting the data in shape now for researchers to study who care to look it over, we have a raft of it - glad to have it in a fire proof vault now.

“Thanks again, and am always glad to hear from you

“Attached find $5.00 - any day this week that you get the ‘urge’ just lay down and have your secretary jot down what comes to you - re: [531] in Philadelphia.

“Just sort of tell me what comes to you, relating plans for 1941 and 1942 in life - but just try and make this a real contact, and let me see what you have to say. I know what I want to do, but I want to know what you have to say.

“Curious, I guess, eh?

Dear [531];-

“Have yours of the 28th - have no open period before the morning of the 6th - if you are in your office that morning

• let me know between the hours of 10:30 and 11:30 E.S.T. If not, don’t think can do any thing by just trying to contact - and you might get much better results if you asked direct questions.

“Let me know what you think - and if you will be in office that morning.”
