This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of August, 1944, in accordance with request made by the Mother - Mrs. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, and those conditions, those records, those environs as surround this body. In analyzing the disturbances which exist here, as is indicated, the illness is of the mind, and not so much of body, in the present.

3. In the present environs, and under the existent shadows, very little may be accomplished, for, those individuals in authority take little interest in even possibilities, where there have been, and are, evidences of this nature or character of dementia praecox which indicates the inability of the body to respond to suggestive forces, as indicated, or the reaction or reflexes from brain to the organs of sensory forces in their activity to the physical being. Yet, as we have so often indicated here, there are measures which might be taken where there may be brought, even under the disturbances, near to normal conditions for this body. This would require personal or individual application, not merely of the material or mechanical applications for resuscitating activity of nerve matter in brain center, but application of the spiritual attitude, prompted by love of fellow-man.

4. There is no obsession - there is no possession, but a weakness, as in the first periods of stress in study, and in an activity that brought a pressure upon the sympathetic nervous system which broke the connection with the reflexes in central portion of the brain, as to cause lapses, or loss of memory - inability to recall what had been.

5. The giving of sedatives, the giving of certain classes or characters of treatment, has destroyed the ability in the physical self to respond to kindness. For, as may be found in the experience of every human soul, the soul responds to all the fruits of the spirit of truth, when even the mind and body may not. But know that mind, in the material, is the builder. Thus, with the correct - or a direct - spiritual application of the tenets of truth - patience, long-suffering, gentleness, kindness, brotherly love - there may be help.

6. This treatment would be applied outwardly, specifically, or bodily, as we will indicate.

7. There is within the nerve centers that which, in the elements of material, contributes to the white and gray matter of the nervous system, and, as has been indicated, this may be in patience, in gentleness, rebuilded, even when destroyed much more than is indicated here. But with the use of these elements - silver and gold - to the body in such measures and manners as to supply those necessary influences to reestablish in the physical forces of the body those necessary channels along which impulses run, we may replenish, we may supply those forces, for even this body.

8. Use, then, the Wet Cell Appliance, carrying Sodium Chloride of Gold - one grain to one ounce of distilled water.

9. Nitrate of Silver would be supplied also to the body through the same Appliance, but not in, or with, the same connections. This would be one ounce of a two percent solution, and then one ounce of distilled water and an ounce of pure grain alcohol added to make three ounces.

10. These solutions should be applied through the Wet Cell alternately, one being used one day, the other the next, for thirty minutes. The Gold should be applied to the umbilical and lacteal duct center through the larger plate, while the smaller plate would be to the 4th lumbar.

11. The Nitrate of Silver through the larger plate should be carried to the umbilical and lacteal duct center, or, on this body, the attachment would be made three fingers from the navel center directly to the right and two fingers upward. This would be on the right side, where there is the greater lacteal duct assimilation, so that those elements would be added to the body functioning in and through glandular forces. The smaller plate, when using the Nitrate of Silver, would be attached at the brachial center or 4th dorsal center.

12. These should be applied one on one day, the other the next day, for thirty minutes.

13. Keep these connections very clean.

14. Following each of the applications for thirty minutes of these metals to the body forces, there should be given a massage.

15. This would require, to be sure, that the body be released to a competent nurse, and the care would preferably be where there will be the ability for the entity to apply itself in some useful activity. The more out-of-doors, the better.

16. This can be accomplished, if there is first obtained such a caretaker for the body, and then obtain release through the channels through which entrance was first obtained to present institution.

17. Let those responsible for the body live the prayerful life. Not merely hoping, but in their likes and dislikes. Put away all of anxiety, all of animosity, all of hate, all of holding others responsible. For know, in Whom ye believe, and know that He is able to keep that ye commit unto Him against any experience, be it spiritual, mental, or physical.

19. (Q) Do I understand that over-study and strain was the cause of his condition? (A) Over-study and strain, and, as indicated, an injury in the lower portion of the lumbar axis, where the Gold is to be applied; and the massages should be daily, following the use of the Appliance. Have these at regular periods. Do keep the connections clean. We will obtain results. Do be prayerful.

20. (Q) Just where could these treatments be better followed? (A) As has just been indicated, where there would be some individual who would care for this body, and in the attitude of doing it not for the money, but for love of the fellow-man. Yes, there are many who will do so. These can be obtained, as we find, should there be the desiring to change to the farm for such, in Massachusetts.

21. (Q) In what way can his mother best help him? (A) By the act of the life itself, as indicated, and by assisting those who will aid those in assisting this boy.

22. (Q) To whom should she go to have Dr. […]‘s report of Dec. 10, 1943 deleted from records? (A) As has been indicated, remove the body and forget. Hold not animosity. It’s wrong (that is, the report), but two wrongs will not make a right. Do as has been given.

Evidently the farm referred to is the Gould Farm, Great Barrington, Mass. We had quite of bit of correspondence with a nurse, Miss Sarah T. Robertson, who was caring for a patient there using treatments suggested in his Reading [3124-1]. This was about a year ago.)

R2. 5/6/82 GD’s note: On August 30, 1944 Edgar Cayce went with his wife Gertrude to Roanoke, Va. to try to follow advice in his own reading to get his health back. He died on January 3, 1945. It is possible that the mother of [5405] wrote us following receipt of the reading for her son and it was lost in the deluge of requests coming in for appointments which we were unable to make. We still had appointments for readings two years in advance when Mr. Cayce died.

In any case, we have no record of hearing from her again, so we don’t know whether or not the attempt was made to carry out the suggestions in the reading. In 1949 we wrote a letter addressed to the mother of [5405] hoping to get a report. It was returned marked DECEASED.

B1. 3/25/44 [5405]‘s mother’s letter: “He has been confined for about 3 1/2 years due to a mental collapse… Four series of shock treatments have been administered, the first, heavy insulin, and the second, third and fourth electric. The last has just been completed, but he is still far from well mentally, and besides is extremely nervous and does not look too well physically. His case has been called ‘a very complicated one’, and about ten psychiatrists have said that he will never recover but I don’t believe them… Could he have received an injury at some time that has never come to light?… He was a delicate baby, had a number of small illnesses, also had several accidents and a few severe shocks. He has been well and comfortably brought up, has attended good private schools - except one, where he received quite a shock and from which he was removed. Part of his school life he lived at home and part of it he boarded in school. He finished military high, spent a half year in college and the other half in a West Point Prep school when he broke down. He had been living home for a year and a half when this illness overcame him. He was a very good student until toward the end, then just average. He attended fine camps in the summer until he was 15 years old - then home; he was proficient in all sports. He was always over fond of me and very jealous. Today he was fair, very nervous and very much gone physically.” 1. What is the cause of his condition? Just when and how did it start? Was there a physical injury? 2. Is it possible for him to recover? 3. Is he receiving the proper attention where he is, or should he be moved? 4. How much longer must hospitalization be continued? 5. Should mother take up residence near the institution where he is staying? or remain in …?
