This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of July, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3124], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., through Miss Sarah T. Robertson.

Time of Reading 4:00 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Mass.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time, giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes - we have the body here, [3124].

3. As we find, conditions here are very serious, but do not lose hope. For, help is nigh - if you will but accept same.

4. Here we find conditions advanced in multiple sclerosis, so-called, or the inability of the digestive forces and the glands in the liver (in the right lobe) to supply those tendencies needed, or energies needed, to supply the return force in nerve energy.

5. As is understood by some, thought by many, there is within each physical being the elements whereby the organs and their activities and functionings are enabled within themselves to supply that needed for replenishing or rebuilding their own selves.

6. This may be done, as comprehended, in a period of every seven years. Thus it is a slow process, but it is a growth in the energies of the body and thus necessitates there being kept a normal balance in the chemistry of the body-force itself. For it is either from potash, iodine, soda or fats, that each of these in their various combinations and multiple activities supply all the other forces of the body-energies. Yet in each body there is born or projected that something of the soul-self also.

7. Thus we find what is commonly called the law of cause and effect, or karmic conditions being met by an individual entity. For, as given of old, each soul shall give an account of every idle word spoken. It shall pay every whit. And this is as self-evident as the statement, “In the day ye eat thereof ye shall surely die.” It is as demonstrative as, “Be ye fruitful, multiply, SUBDUE the earth.”

8. The entity, then, is still at war with itself, but all hate, all malice, all that would make man afraid, must be eliminated, first from the mind of the individual entity. And he knows, should know, there is an advocate with the Father. For, as was given to that one called to be the leader of his people, “Who maketh thy tongue? Who maketh thine eyes to see, thine ears to hear, thine feet to walk?” Is it not the Lord?

9. Hence He has given in the earth that which, when sought by the individual entity or soul that acknowledges it has gone astray, helps to meet whatever condition that may have come to pass. For, as given, “Though ye wander far, if ye call I will hear, and answer speedily.”

10. And this may be YOU, if you will but harken. But if you turn your face away, know there is not in heaven or hell that which may separate you from the love of God - as He has promised in His word - but yourself. And others seek to help you, as we would here, if you will listen.

11. Then, right about FACE! KNOW that the Lord liveth, and would do thee good - if ye will but trust wholly in Him!

12. There are pathological conditions indicated, or those indicating that the body-forces have refused to respond. But there are elements in the earth that may aid you in gaining the control. For, who makes the sun to shine? Who gives the bitterness to quinine? Who gives the sweetness to sugar? Is it man, because he found it? Or was it put there by the Maker in the beginning, for man to find and to use in its proper place and relationship to his associations one with another? To meet the needs of a physical being, either in pleasure or in displeasure with those influences which have been too much absorbed in self?

13. Here we find there is lacking in the body those elements that may be supplied through Chloride of Gold Sodium, by the use of the low vibrations as they may be added to the body in such measures that the organs deficient may use them in their assimilation to strengthen the nerve supply and add to the nerve plasm that is lacking in giving stamina and strength to the nerves of the legs, of the body, yes of the whole being.

14. Making thy heart right, making attunement with that golden harp of life, let it play upon thine own imagination as to how ye will use thyself to the glory of God, to the love of thy fellow man - if there is given that power within. For, lo, as He has promised, “Look not to heaven nor overseas, for Lo it is within thine own self that ye may know thy God, to do His biddings.”

15. Construct the Wet Cell Appliance, then, carrying the Gold - in the proportions of two grains Chloride of Gold Sodium to one ounce of distilled water, and use at least four ounces of the solution.

16. For this body there should be the double-strength charge - if it accepts this at all. If it does not accept all of that suggested, making the promise to self - not so much to others but to thyself and thy Maker, and keeping it, then do not begin with these administrations. For, thy usefulness depends upon how well ye make thy promise and keep it.

17. Make the attachments to the body for at least fifty minutes daily. Put the connections together with the Appliance at least twenty minutes before the attachments are made to the body. Keep the attachment plates very clean, polished before and after using. Disconnect or take the connections out of the solution when not in use.

18. The large plate through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially to the body would be attached to the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus. The small copper plate should be attached to the 9th dorsal.

19. Each day following the use of the Appliance there should be the massaging of the limbs and the lower sacrals with an equal combination of Peanut Oil and unfermented Grape Juice. This may soon be easily obtained, the juice from crushed fresh grapes; not the pulp, but the juice - mixed with an equal quantity of Peanut Oil. Shake these together and massage into the body, over the abdomen and around the limbs, from the toes to the head, and especially the whole of the left side of the body. This should be done daily, following the use of the Appliance.

20. This will not be a hurried response, but in less than three months you should see the change - if you expect it, and if those administering the treatments are conscientious, consistent, faithful and purposeful.

21. Do these.

22. Keep the regular routine for diet; that is, not fat meats, but plenty of seafoods - not necessarily every day but more than once a week, and fowl may be taken.

23. Also calcium may be supplied through Calcios, for this has been lacking in this body. Every other day, regularly, not skipping a period, eat a whole wheat cracker spread thinly with the Calcios. Do this regularly.

24. Do these things, if we would find betterment.

25. We are through for the present.

R1. 8/6/43 Nurse’s letter to EC:

“I have time for only a few lines before the mail is taken into Great Barrington. Gould Farm is eight miles in the country.

“I will write again, but I want to express immediately our gratitude for your reading. What you suggest interests me deeply. I believe you will help this young man, [3124], to obtain spiritual and physical help. I am so glad you emphasized the spiritual side. For the most perfect body without spiritual development is after all, only a healthy animal!”

R2. 8/7/43 [3124]‘s letter to EC dictated to nurse:

“Your reading has given me fresh hope and courage and I thank you. There are several things that neither Miss Robertson nor I understand. For instance, you say that ‘the inability of the digestive forces, and the glands in the liver (in the right lobe) to supply those tendencies needed, or energies needed, to supply the return force in nerve energy’ causes the trouble. WHY, if the trouble is in the RIGHT lobe of the liver, do you STRESS massage to the LEFT side of my body? My LEFT side functions better, and looks better and has better muscle tone. I always use my cane with my left hand and arm. My LEFT leg twitches less and is stronger than my RIGHT leg. Also, I have a better grip in my LEFT hand. Another thing that Miss Robertson, as a nurse, wishes to know: Should she START treatments with the Wet Cell Appliance for ten or fifteen minutes (until we see how my body takes it) and work up to a fifty minute treatment? Or shall we start with a fifty minute treatment?

“I do not understand just what you mean by the whole reading, but I will try wholeheartedly to do what you ask of me…”

R3. 8/11/43 EC’s letter to [3124]: “Thanks for yours of the seventh. I hope the suggestions as given in your reading will at least be given a fair trial. Why it suggests what it does in the reading, I have never been able to answer. I am not a physiologist or an anatomist, but I must say there is a reason. I am of the opinion, or I have been told, the nerves cross the body and this is doubtless why the applications should be made. No, I would use the treatments just as it is directed, then let me hear what the results are, and if needs be, we will be more than glad to check up on same to see just how it comes along…”

R4. 8/15/43 Nurse’s letter to EC: “Your letter to [3124] came yesterday and he will answer it very soon.

“Meanwhile, I wish to tell you that there was nothing skeptical in either [3124]‘s or my attitude in asking you questions in relation to the reading.

“[3124] asked me to tell you that your letter answered what he wanted to know and made him feel satisfied. He believes in you, Mr. Cayce. For myself, I have been absolutely honest with you from the first. I told you that because of scientific and professional training, it was hard for me to accept certain spiritual and philosophical doctrines, but that I approached this whole thing with an open mind, and a genuine desire for more faith in things we cannot seem to prove.

“And I tell you frankly that I have been much impressed by the utter sincerity and desire to help others, that you have shown. And in your reading, there is nothing suggested that is not in accordance with what I have studied under very able neurologists and psychiatrists.

“[3124] wanted to tell you about his left side being the better. Both he and I forget that you are not a diagnostician, in the generally accepted sense of the word, but a channel, a giver, through which Divine Healing may flow.

“And I asked if I should gradually increase time of vibrations, because I wasn’t sure of that detail. Please don’t think we lack faith or gratitude. We are doing wholeheartedly what your reading tells us to do. As soon as the Wet Cell Appliance comes, I will start treatments and massage. I ordered the Appliance over a week ago and the drugs to operate it (enclosing checks for $25.00). Perhaps you will be kind enough to ask Mr. A. M. Godfrey to send it, as it is very important that we start these treatments. It won’t be long before I have to go back to … And then, someone else will have to continue with them.

“With every good wish and most sincere gratitude…”

R5. 8/28/43 Nurse’s letter to EC: “Thank you for your kind letter. The treatments for [3124] are going remarkably well. After nine treatments he says that he can move his right leg! And his whole right side is the more helpless one. His faith and happiness are touching to see. How much he grasps of the spiritual side, I cannot tell. I asked him what he was going to do with his new self and he said very humbly, ‘I think I will write and ask Mr. Cayce what to do.’ The only doctor with whom I have discussed the treatments, was kind and sympathetic. But he said, ‘Of course, you will have to face what the boy’s reaction will be if he does NOT get help, and whether he will be more desperate.’ I told him we had thought of that from the beginning, but that the medical profession holds out no hope, and that [3124] believes in you as one who is inspired to help.

“We are working on plans to make it possible for [3124] to continue these treatments in a sympathetic atmosphere in New York. And he will stay here until arrangements can be made, through the social agency that sent him to Gould Farm, which I think will be about September 15th. I will be here until the middle of September or the 1st of October and will continue massage as long as [3124] is here. He can use the Wet Cell Appliance himself.

“The druggist here has been unable to get Peanut Oil, so I have written to Mr. Godfrey, asking him to try to get some. Meanwhile, we are using only the grape juice.

“When I come to Richmond, Virginia in October, I shall try to come to Virginia Beach to see you and Mrs. Cayce…”

R6. 9/21/43 Nurse’s letter to EC:

“I have been waiting to answer your last letter until I had something definite to report about [3124] and his treatments, which have been given faithfully every single day since August 19th. I am happy to tell you that things seem to be working out splendidly, and I think we are going to be able to arrange for [3124] to stay on here at Gould Farm, and continue the treatments here in this atmosphere of Christian brotherhood and mutual helpfulness. As I told you before, this young man has been unable to work for over three years (he is an electrician by trade and has a very bright mind and tremendous will power, which so far has been directed mainly to getting what HE WANTS), and his wife, who is not strong, has all she can possibly do to work and support herself and their little boy. She boards the child with her mother while she works in a shoe store in the Bronx, New York City. And the little boy has started to school this fall.

“The heads of Gould Farm, who kept [3124] here for over a month free, though they have no endowments and are always short of funds, have agreed to keep him here for a nominal board until early in October, when the social worker from New York, who sent [3124] here, can come up here and take the whole situation over…” [GD’s note: Miss Robertson indicated she was using her own funds to buy necessary things for following the treatment.]

R7. 10/11/43 EC’s letter to Nurse, Sarah Robertson:

“Thank you for yours of the 28th. I have heard from several others quite exaggerated reports on Mr. [3124]. I hope he is getting better, but it will be too bad if he doesn’t change his mental being as well as his physical being. If people could only get that, it would be worth something.

“You will have to be patient, but you will have to get him to see the needs of his getting some spiritual food as well as physical health.

“Thanks very much and hoping to hear from you from time to time…”

R8. 10/18/43 Sarah Robertson’s letter to EC:

“Thank you for your letter. I didn’t quite get what you meant when you said, ‘I hear through others greatly exaggerated accounts of Mr. [3124].’ I suppose you mean what the blind girl, [3341], wrote you when she asked for a reading?

“In all this discussion about the amount and price of Gold Chloride, I hope you didn’t think there was lack of confidence in you or Mr. Godfrey.

“[3124] believes in you with all his heart, and believes he is getting well.

“He is quite egotistical, and he thought that ‘double charge’ meant four grains of Gold Chloride to each ounce of water. Though I am a nurse, he thought he knew more than I did. And so, to end the discussion and satisfy everybody, I wrote to you and to Mr. Godfrey. And now it is all clear, and Mr [3124] is happy and satisfied about it.

“The young man is an enigma to me though I have done much social work, and have nursed in a psychiatric hospital for a good many years. He has courage and good sportsmanship, but he is one of the most emotional and self-centered people that I have ever known. You say that I must help him to see that he needs spiritual food as well as physical help. I have tried, Mr. Cayce, but I don’t think I have succeeded very well. He is touchy and close-mouthed, and will say, ‘Don’t let’s talk about it. It is too deep a matter.’ I can’t tell whether he feels a great deal, or not at all, except a burning desire to be physically whole again. We can’t force a person to see spiritual values by talking about it. That is one reason I have assumed the responsibility of continuing to do for him, though his lack of consideration to me (and others who are trying to help him) and his egotism have nearly worn me out. I want to prove to him, and so do others here, that the principle of Christian love and service is above just personal feelings. There is much involved in this whole affair. The social worker who sent Mr. [3124] here came up from New York Saturday to talk the whole thing over with the heads of Gould Farm. I asked her how the New York doctors felt about it all, and she said that is was beyond their ken but that if courage and hope and healing came, they would all say ‘hurrah’!

“They have arranged for Mr. [3124] to stay here until arrangements can be made for him to go somewhere in New York where he can continue the treatments. If you want to write to him, he will be here, or Gould Farm will give you his new address. He may be here two weeks, two months, etc. We don’t know. But somebody here will read and write his letters and take over what I have been doing for him.

“I leave in a week or two for my house in Staunton, Virginia. And after a few weeks there, will probably return to Asheville, North Carolina. I will try to keep in touch with you, and tell you all I know. This young man believes in you, or says he does, and I think your influence will count more than anything I can say or do…”

“P.S. I AM trying to be patient with [3124] and we must remember he is a product of the Bronx, N.Y., where it is ‘Dog eat dog’ and I think an intensely emotional, self-centered little Jew, though he denies being a Jew. I am trying and I am praying about the whole thing, Mr. Cayce.”

R9. 1/24/44 [3124]‘s letter to EC:

“Last June I wrote you through a Miss Sarah Robertson and you generously gave me a splendid reading on July 31, 1943 at 3:30 P.M. I bought the suggested electric battery and the Peanut Oil and grape juice and have followed the procedure religiously ever since. I immediately showed improvement from the beginning and gained strength and confidence, but ever since November 15, when my ninety days were up, I have seemed to decline in strength and in courage. It has been slow and spotty. In the meantime, I have come to believe in God and am not discouraged.

“However, I am wondering if you could not give me another reading to ascertain if I am doing anything wrong or not making the proper progress. I would like very much if you could as I do not want to decline further.

“I have moved to New York state and am now living at …, New York.

“This is being written for me by a friend, as I still have not enough strength in my hands to write, nor can I see well enough.

“I still have great faith in God and in you…”

R10. 2/20/44 Friend of [3124]‘s letter to EC:

“[3124], for whom I am writing, was happy to receive your good letter of February 2nd and accepts your generous offer of another reading on March 25th with his deep thanks.

“He has signed and filled out the enclosed form, and there has been written on the back the questions he wishes answered…”

2. I am compelled to do my own massaging most of the time with only occasional outside massages. Is that wrong?
3. Does smoking hinder my recovery?
4. Am I making deep underlying progress which I do not now discern on the surface?
5. What was reason for sudden reversal in rapid recovery last fall at the end of the first three months? Had I expected too much by that date?
6. Is your treatment to result in a partial or complete recovery? What do you think is a reasonable length of time it ought to take?

R11. 3/22/44 Friend of [3124]‘s letter to EC:

“I was supposed, before my departure for Boston to write you in behalf of [3124] of …, New York, that he is anxiously awaiting his reading this Saturday afternoon, March 25, 1944, at 3:30 P.M. in his room at the above address. He has been distressed that he has for some time been unable to get any fresh grapes from which to press the juice to use with Peanut Oil as a Massage, and hopes you will have some answer for him on this problem.

“A letter from Mary Wirsing to him has him puzzled about his Associate Membership. He had rather understood that he had been given for a year, some special membership on the basis of his complete financial dependence upon public funds and that this second follow-up reading is part of the above arrangement. Does it mean that after this second reading, his first type of membership expires and he must then take out a $15.00 membership to entitle him to all the privileges and any further readings? He certainly does appreciate the generosity extended him thus far in what you have done for him and wishes he could pay for it a thousand times over…” [GD’s note: We wrote extending his membership for another year.]

B1. 6/22/43 [3124]‘s letter to EC:

“Since reading your life and hearing of your wonderful power and the help you have been to others, I feel inspired by the hope that you may be able to help me in my sore need.

“This letter is being written for me because the condition of my eyes is such that I can neither read nor write, and I am asking you to give a reading of my case.

“I am thirty-four years old, married and have a little boy five years old. My wife works in a department store in New York to support the family. Before I was married, I had a mysterious attack of some kind which made me practically blind for a year, and which no doctor was able to diagnose. At the end of a year, with no medical assistance, the condition cleared up and I was about as well as before the attack. Sometime after I was married and my son was about two years old, the trouble with my eyes returned, plus a general disability of my legs and arms.

“I consulted some of the leading doctors in New York City and was in the ward of several of the leading hospitals. My trouble has been diagnosed as multiple sclerosis and I have had several experimental treatments, but the condition, instead of getting better, has for over three years been getting worse. At present, I am half blind and even with the aid of a cane, can walk about the house with great difficulty. Medical science seems to know little of this condition and holds out no hope for me.

“But since reading Dr. T. F. Opie’s review of Sugrue’s account of your life and work (in the N.Y. CHURCHMAN magazine) I have renewed hope and faith, that through you, I may find health and happiness again.

“Through the assistance of Social Service in New York, I am now spending a few months in the country at Gould Farm in Massachusetts and will appreciate it if you write to me here…”

B2. 6/30/43 Letter from nurse, Sarah T. Robertson:

“He is too blind to read or write. He has been diagnosed by some of the best doctors in New York City as having multiple sclerosis, and being a hopeless case. He is practically penniless, has been unable to work for about three years. A social service organization sent him to Gould Farm, not with any hope of his recovery but hoping that here he would find courage and inspiration to face the future and accept what comes. He has courage, and never complains when he falls in attempting to walk… Gould Farm is a wonderful place, a demonstration of Applied Christianity. I have been here off and on for fourteen years; was sent here first by Dr. […], an outstanding neurologist in New York, who is no longer living. He sent me here when I was bitter and discouraged, to prove to me that there was a man who dared to believe and to PROVE that the teachings of Christ CAN be applied here and now…”

B3. 7/1/43 EC wrote that he would give the reading without charge if they would agree to carry out the advice.

B4. 7/5/43 Miss Robertson submitted questions for reading:

1. Can I help others to be cured of multiple sclerosis?
2. If I am healed, what can I do to remain well? (He had a remission of his trouble for six years before he married.)
3. If I am healed, shall I stay at Gould Farm to help them in their great work, instead of returning to New York, even if my wife will not come here? (And I feel quite sure she would not.)

B5. 7/20/43 Miss Robertson’s letter:

“Please help [3124] and all of us to accept in a brave way whatever comes from this reading. His reaction to the diagnosis of New York doctors that he had multiple sclerosis and was incurable, was to try to kill himself! He slashed both arms with a razor. The social worker at Neurological Institute in New York sent him here and provided funds. Gould Farm took him for two months at reduced rate and invited him to stay through August, so he would be out of New York heat, and so he would be here for your reading, and to hear results of reading.”
