1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3521].

3. As we find, there are definite disturbances here and these produce at times specific reactions; and at others they produce only a reflex disturbance causing weakness and indecisions in the body-mind.

4. In times back we find there was an injury to the upper portion of the coccyx end of spine; not on the lower - though the lower portion, of course, is pressing upon the sphincter centers. These have caused a pressure in such a manner as for lesions to be formed in the gall duct and the lacteal duct areas, or the larger patches of these.

5. These are the sources of the dizziness, the tendencies for constipation, the convulsive reactions to base of brain - when these cause a plethora condition in the circulation of blood and the nerve forces through that area of the medulla oblongata at the base of the brain or at the 1st and 2nd cervical. These we find, are the sources of the disturbance. There are other reflexes, yes, but with the corrections of these we will find that conditions will improve.

6. First, then, we would apply wet heat to the areas in the lumbar and sacral and coccyx; wet heat, preferably towels wrung out of very hot water; and then corrections made there. Then the lesions or adhesions in the lacteal duct and gall duct area may be relaxed sufficiently as to remove the disturbances that reflexly cause the activities in the liver and the lower portion of brain centers. Reduce all of these osteopathically, if we would bring the better conditions for this body.

7. In the matter of the diet, not too much of solid foods but semi-solids and liquids during the periods that the cleansings are being brought about. For eventually, as corrections are made, the body should have the gall duct drained osteopathically. This should be after the relaxations are made in the sacral and lumbar areas and the coccyx conditions reduced and the gall duct area, and the lacteal ducts stimulated to better activity. Then we may drain these.

8. Then the foods should be gradually changed, but keep away from carbonated waters, chocolates or sweets - do not take these during or any time soon after the periods of these treatments.

9. Ready for questions.

10. (Q) Do these pressures cause the double vision? (A) These cause all of the distresses indicated. For with the pressures in the upper dorsal and upper cervical areas, these reflect upon the nerves of the sensory system. They also make for the hesitancy in speech, alterations in the taste at times, as well as the acute hearing, and the periods when it is blank - as well as in the vision.

The reading arrived here on January first, and we have been very encouraged by it. We intend to follow up with the treatments as soon as we are settled in California again.

My husband consulted an osteopath here, but he said that the treatments would extend over several months possibly, and as we are returning to Oakland in two weeks, when my husband’s leave is up, it would not be worthwhile to start now, in his opinion. We shall send you the name of the osteopath whom we select, as soon as possible.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you so much for your recent letter of encouragement.

This week, at last, my husband has started on the treatment prescribed in his Reading. The difficulty has been in trying to find an osteopath here who has hot water in his office for the wet heat applications. This we have been unable to do. So my husband decided to go ahead with Dr. James H. Bell, Easton Building, Oakland, California, treating him, twice a week.

The procedure is for me to apply wet towels, as directed, here in the hotel room for a period of twenty minutes. Then we take a trolley car into town, - the whole interval of time between heat applications and the osteopathic treatment being one hour. Neither the doctor nor we know whether this time lapse will affect the desired results or not. But Dr. Bell is very sympathetic, and is a fine osteopath, having been recommended by Dr. Siehl [Walter H. Siehl], of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Siehl considered the course of treatment a procedure for a sanitarium, and probably it is; but my husband feels that his duties with the Army will not allow him to take time off at present, or for several months to come. It is hard to know what to do in this situation.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I have been intending to write to you for a long time, but have been so occupied traveling around. My husband’s health continues bad, for we have not really had an opportunity to give our reading (of December 18, 1943) a fair trial. We are at a loss right now, for there is no osteopath in this little Alabama town, where we are staying with my uncle and aunt. So we are turning to you for help.

I don’t suppose the hospital at Virginia Beach has been opened again, has it? If not, do you know of an osteopathic sanatorium anywhere near here? Or a sympathetic osteopath? We had so much trouble before finding one who would try out the prescribed treatment, and we are in no position now to go from town to town, looking for one who will help us. We do not have a car of our own, and travel has become extremely difficult for my husband. However, since he has been forced to retire from work because of this health, we do have time to travel around, and are of course quite willing to, if you do not know anyone close to us here, or anywhere in Alabama. We would like another reading after we locate an osteopath, as of course it would not do any good now, when we have no one to carry out the treatment. We shall really appreciate it, if you can give us this information.

I have yours of the 23rd and wish I knew just what to suggest to you.

I don’t recall just how far … is from Montgomery, Mobile or some of those towns, where you could get very good Osteopaths. There are quite a number of Neuropaths and maybe you could get one of them.

No, we haven’t any place here at the Beach. Of course, we have good Osteopaths and ones that would work with us if you could get to Norfolk. But I am very sure that Montgomery or Birmingham would be much better for you. Dr. Woodall in Birmingham would co-operate; or the Doctor in Montgomery who has a Neuropathic School. I don’t recall her name just now [Elise L. Stone], but if you decide on her, we will get in touch with her for you.

We have quite a number of people in Montgomery. I have a cousin there and we have several other people for whom we have given readings and they could help you a lot.

Do let us hear from you and if we can help you we will be very glad to do so.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you so much for your letter of the 29th. I have written to Dr. Woodall in Birmingham, as that city is closer to … than Montgomery is. His reply was very nice, but he says that there are no osteopathic sanatoriums there. Since Birmingham is so crowded at present, we thought that before making any other arrangements there, it might be well to try Montgomery.

So if you would be so kind as to put us in touch with the Neuropath in Montgomery, to whom you referred in your letter, we would greatly appreciate it.

Our trouble is that my husband has great difficulty in walking, and transportation to and from a doctor’s office is likely to be a problem. That is why we would rather have treatment in a sanatorium. However, that may not be possible.

R7. 7/4/44 [3521]‘s wife’s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for your letter of the 13th, which was forwarded to us in Birmingham.

We have been here three weeks, during which time my husband has been treated by Dr. Woodall and his assistant, Dr. John V. Glass. Both of them are most co-operative, and we are very encouraged, especially since my husband’s walking has improved a little.

We would like to make an appointment for an additional physical reading for my husband ([3521]). Our present address is the Woodson Convalescent Home, 2737 Highland Ave., Birmingham, Alabama. We have no room number here, but are on the first floor, the first room back of the living room, on the right. I believe the amount of the enclosed check is right.

The convention at Virginia Beach sounded very interesting, and I know it must have surely been a success.

R8. 8/22/44 Reply to Questionnaire:

Re [3521]:

HISTORY

Occasional convulsive seizures started in 1931, and gradually have become more frequent. An unsteadiness in gait began to appear about 1941, and this has been growing worse. All this and other symptoms were noted in the Physical Reading of December 18, 1943.

At first the medical diagnosis of his ailment was that it was epilepsy. However, the doctors were never satisfied with this diagnosis, and about a year ago decided that it was multiple sclerosis.

TREATMENT

Dr. Bell, Easton Bldg., Oakland, California, gave treatment twice weekly from February 27 to March 15, 1944. These were as directed in the Dec. 18 reading, except that one hour had to elapse between hot applications and the actual treatment. No improvement noted.

Treatments by Dr. Percy Woodall and Dr. John Glass, every other day from June 13 to June 28, 1944. These did not seem to be helping, in fact Mr. [3521] was still getting worse, so decided to stop treatment until we had a Check Physical Reading, in order to see if daily treatments would be better, or if there would be any further suggestions.

At present, his condition is just about the same.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for the booklet “Physical Readings”, which I think will help very much.

I would like to ask a few questions at the Check Physical Reading for Mr. [3521] on September 16, between 3:30 and 4:30 P.M., EWT. They are -

1. At what intervals is it best to space the treatments that were recommended?
2. Would it be beneficial to go to a warmer climate during the winter? Is any particular kind of climate of benefit?
3. Did the fall he took on December 23, 1943, inflict any injury to his back or other part of this body? (If this has not been covered in the main part of the reading.) Our address will be the same on September 16, as above, and we will keep the time of the reading as an hour of prayer and meditation, as you suggested.

R10. 9/16/44 GD’s letter to [3521]‘s wife:

Dear Mrs. […]:-

We are extremely sorry that Mr. Cayce is not able to give the reading for your husband, but he has not been at all well for the past two months, and none have been given.

Since we do not know when Mr. Cayce will be able to resume work, we can only suggest that you try, to the best of your ability, to follow the previous reading in every detail.

It has been reported to us by quite a few that in some instances the first reaction to treatment does not always seem favorable, but we sincerely suggest that your husband make every attempt to continue to carry out the directions in its entirety. It might prove helpful to set down a daily schedule of his activities, paying special attention to diet, carefully checking the reading to be sure that no small detail is overlooked, allowing for rest periods, relaxation, etc.

Of course, if the first reading cannot be carried out, there is not much that a second reading could say except to repeat that the suggestions given were necessary in order to correct the disturbances. We do realize the difficulties you have encountered, and hope that you can find a way to overcome them.

Dear Miss Davis, We were so sorry to hear of Mr. Cayce’s illness, and do hope that he is better by now. It is amazing that he has not been ill before, as his work must be a strain.

We were disappointed, of course, about not having a reading, but that can wait, naturally. You did not return the check reading fee, so we are joyfully assuming that this means that you have made another appointment for my husband in the future, although you did not mention it in your letter.

We are very anxious for another reading, for we both are more familiar with Mr. Cayce’s work than we were a year ago. We have secured and read “There Is A River” since then, and believe it to be a most remarkable biography. Our faith and understanding are greater, and therefore the results of the reading might be better.

In the meantime, we are going ahead, as you suggested following the first reading very carefully. Dr. Glass is most cooperative and is taking great pains to follow the instructions exactly. So we are very hopeful.

I would like a physical reading for myself sometime, whenever it can be crowded in. I have several symptoms that I would like explained, and also I want to know if anything can be done to relieve my argeria. As you may know, this is a stain beneath the outer layers of the skin, due to the use of argyrol and silver nitrate (for sinus trouble, in my case). Possibly there may be something in the Association files on this, and if so, I would certainly appreciate knowing of it. The doctors know of no way to remove this stain, and while mine is not very bad, still it is distressing to me, whenever I think about it, for it is noticeable. I am hoping that, through Mr. Cayce, I may find out how to get rid of it. That would be such a relief.

Please send me a form so that I may apply for a reading. And do let me know about my husband’s appointment.

We are adding our prayers to all the others that I know are being said for Mr. Cayce. His is a wonderful work, and it must grieve him to have to forego it, even for a little while. It would be fine if the readings could find an assistant for him, someone who has similar talents, though latent now.

Dear Miss Davis,

We were sorry to hear that Mr. Cayce is still ill, and do hope that he will be better soon.

Thank you for the refund check. Needless to say, I am sorry that it worked out that way.

I am enclosing a check for the Monthly Bulletin, the Weekly Letter, and the mimeographed booklet, Physical Case Studies, amounting to $8.00.

Please change our address on your records, for the last letter you wrote me (Oct. 17, 1944) went to California, to our old address. Of course, it was forwarded here, but I do not believe that the Post Office would forward the Bulletins and Letters, and I am very anxious to have these.

Mr. [3521] is continuing the treatments outlined in his first reading, and we are hoping to be able to report some improvement soon. I shall do as you suggest and contact you again in about six months’ time, about another reading.

In the meantime, I surely do thank you for your kind suggestions. And we shall continue, as I know all his friends are doing, to pray for Mr. Cayce.

Dear Miss Davis,

Thank you so much for including that excerpt from Shirley’s letter in your diary-letter of February 23, with its quotation from John Ruskin, “When God shuts a door, He opens a window”. It really has renewed our hope.

Ever since receiving the sad news of Mr. Cayce’s departure, I have meant to write to you to express Mr. [3521]‘s and my sympathy. Mr. Cayce was really a wonderful man, and we greatly regret that we did not have the opportunity of meeting him personally.

As for ourselves, we felt that through him we had had an all too brief glimpse into a promised land. At least that is how we felt before reading the quotation from Ruskin. Now we feel that the way is still open to us, if we can just find it.

Mr. [3521]‘s physical condition remains our most pressing problem. Some of his former symptoms are relieved in intensity, but on the other hand he has developed other new symptoms which were not present at the time of our reading, December 18, 1943. I’m sorry that his work with the Army, before he retired because of disability on March 31, 1944, kept us from carrying out the instructions in his reading, for several months. Also, from having another reading at that time, which I am sure would have been fuller and possibly different from the first one, due to the different symptoms that had developed.

His new symptoms are characteristic of multiple sclerosis, the doctors agree. He was quite interested, therefore, in the reading on this condition contained, in part, in your Weekly Readings Extract of February 16, 1945. Since you had once marked this available to members on one of the booklists, I’m ordering it on the enclosed list. Of course, I realize it may not be the identical reading, but we are interested in anything on this subject. Also, anything on spinal injuries such as Mr. [3521]‘s reading described, “injury to the upper portion of the coccyx end of spine”.

R14. 5/10/45 [3521]‘s wife’s letter to GD:

Dear Miss Davis,

Thank you for the Physical Case Study on Multiple Sclerosis. Our doctor, Dr. John V. Glass, was very much interested in it. However, he said that he could not recommend our using such a device without having more detailed information than was contained in the Study. That is, specific instructions as to the amount of the charge, the position of attachments to body, the length of time to use it.

It seems that some sort of generalization could be made from the information in Mr. Cayce’s readings, so that a patient having Multiple Sclerosis could be helped without having had a reading for himself. For instance, we noticed that the diets recommended in most of the cases were very similar.

Of the four cases noted in the Study, [3124] seems to be closest to Mr. [3521]‘s condition, as far as we can tell. Mr. [3521]‘s eyes are not affected to that extent, but he cannot walk by himself, even with a cane.

However, [3426], a coccyx injury case noted on page 6 in PHYSICAL READINGS, seems also to be very similar. Especially since Mr. [3521]‘s own reading said his was a coccyx injury. Of course there may be differences. Would it be possible to send us a copy of this reading, or at least enough to show the symptoms as well as suggestions for treatment? I notice that the Radio-Active Appliance is used here. If Dr. Glass could see some of this reading, he could tell better which of these two appliances we should try. I’m assuming that it is still possible to buy these.

As for using the Wet Cell Appliance carrying Gold, we’d appreciate it if you could list the various time limits, the charges used, order of mixing, etc., in the various cases (especially [3124]). Also, as to the diets recommended, is there any quantity specified, or anything additional to what was in the general Study? Is there any special technique recommended for the massages?

Mr. [3521] has taken note of the comments on karmic conditions and has been endeavoring to improve himself in that way. We have “A Search for God”, and believe it will prove helpful in this connection.

Also, we’d appreciate it greatly if you could tell us the names of any doctors who have used the Wet Cell Appliance and the Radio-Active Appliance in similar cases. It would be nice if one happened to be near us. We are not tied down to Birmingham, except by the difficulties of travel at the present time. Our home was in Cincinnati, Ohio, but a warm climate was recommended by the medical doctors as better for Multiple Sclerosis. (I was interested to note that the Readings seemed to give no weight to this.) Of course, Dr. Glass here in Birmingham would be quite willing to help us, if we can get detailed instructions, and this would be the most practical arrangement at the present time.

Of course, with all this we would not discontinue the treatments outlined in Mr. [3521]‘s own Reading of 18 months ago, but would try to fit the two together as far as possible.

I’m sorry to be writing you of our troubles when I know you are so busy, but we really know of no other place to turn than to the Association. I am enclosing a check for two dollars to offset the cost of this research, for which I’m asking. If it is not sufficient, please let me know.

Dear Miss Davis,

We have been reading with interest about the convention and and await hearing the final reports, especially that concerning the medical committee. I’m sorry that we could not attend the convention, as it must indeed be inspiring.

Mr. [3521]‘s condition continues to be bad; he really needs help, of some kind. I was wondering if it might not be good for him to talk to some members of the Association, if there are any active ones here in Birmingham. I certainly would appreciate learning of them, if so.

Also, if possible, would you please ask Case [3426] if he or she would correspond with us, since the two conditions (both coccyx injuries) are so similar? Would you forward a letter to them if I send it to you? I don’t imagine you could supply the name without their consent, but if you would ask them about this, I would surely appreciate it. I feel sure that it would help Mr. [3521] tremendously to get in touch with this case.

We are waiting anxiously to hear more about the treatment for multiple sclerosis, though Mr. [3521] still doubts that he has this, since it wasn’t mentioned in his reading. You can see that we are really in a quandary as to which way to turn.

Dear Mrs. […]

We have received your fine, detailed letter, pointing out the problems in adjusting the pattern of treatments given in readings on Multiple Sclerosis, to fit your particular case.

It was just this kind of accurate individual diagnosis and suggestions which made the readings of Edgar Cayce priceless. Now we no longer have that kind of help available.

Formally, the Association cannot help you further. Our present task is to index and compile the material on different physical conditions which we have on hand - some 30,000 cases [15,000] [15,263 as of 1990]. We do not have on our staff any psychic individual who can guide you where the material you now have leaves off.

But informally, may I suggest to you the name of one of our members, with whom you may wish to correspond? He is Dr. W. T. Bidwell, 800 N. Main Street, Greenville, North Carolina.

At our Association Congress in June Dr. Bidwell spoke and demonstrated at some length a technique of absent diagnosis which seemed to be both psychic and accurate. He is a man of much experience and has his own ideals. But he respects the Cayce readings highly and has indicated his willingness to take a compilation of readings on any given condition and try to determine the application of the general pattern of treatment to an individual.

If you desire, you might discuss with your present physician the possibility of consulting Dr. Bidwell.

Please let us know what action you take, and feel free to raise further questions about your interest in Multiple Sclerosis.

Dear Miss Davis,

I have not received a reply to my letter of June 29, but know that you have been very busy. If I’m repetitious in this one, please forgive me.

Since my husband’s illness still progresses, I would like you to send me two application blanks for emergency research. The reason I want two is that we don’t know whether he has multiple sclerosis (as diagnosed by several medical doctors, but not by Dr. Glass, our osteopathic physician) or whether it is still the coccyx injury that is causing the trouble, as according to the reading by Mr. Cayce.

That is why, Miss Davis, I am so anxious to find out about Case [3426]. This is also a coccyx injury case, and one that seemed to be worse or else of longer standing than Mr. [3521]. If we could see a copy of that Reading, Dr. Glass could compare the symptoms. And if Case [3426] had the one additional symptom in particular - tremor in the extremities - then we would be sure that our reading had been complete, and the multiple sclerosis diagnosis is wrong. In that event, Dr. Glass would then continue the present treatment, with any additional prescribed for Case [3426] that seems promising. And especially we would try the Radio-Active Appliance, if available, which was prescribed according to the excerpt in “Physical Readings”, page 6. (The reason we can’t be sure that our own reading was complete is that the last sentence on the first page sounds as if it is not.) Our reading is 3521-1.

I have a feeling that it is necessary to use either the Wet Cell Appliance or the Radio-Active Appliance. Please do help me, Miss Davis. Is it still possible to get these appliances? Could we use the directions of some other reading to have one made? Or do you know of any that are not in use, in Alabama or elsewhere? Do you have any there at the Beach? Of course, we’d like to avoid traveling at this time, but if that were the only way to find one to use, we’d be willing to come there.

R18. 7/26/45 GD’s letter to [3521]‘s wife:

Dear Mrs. […]

The enclosed “form” letter, dated July 4th, was “rescued” by me just before it was mailed. I had already signed it when I realized that it did not answer your questions completely, so I held it up until I could try to answer you in detail.

I am sending you two application blanks for requesting, through your physician, emergency research on the condition known as MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. However, after reading what I have to say you may feel that the material you might obtain would not be worth the expense involved.

On looking up Case [3426] (Coccyx Injury) listed on page 6 in the PHYSICAL READINGS pamphlet, I find that the symptoms manifest themselves in a form of what the doctors call Epilepsy. He is a young man released from the Army because of his condition. His aunt wrote us about him, “He had an illness when a child - they thought it was meningitis, but he got alright and had no trouble until this condition developed 2 or 3 years ago when he went into the Army. For no apparent reason he just ‘folds up’, doesn’t remember anything…he is quite nervous at times but otherwise there is nothing to indicate that a spell will occur.”

So, this doesn’t seem to have any connection with Mr. [3521]‘s case. You see what we are up against in trying to use these Physical Readings generally? A coccyx injury can cause a hundred different things, all the way from a hemorrhoid condition, insanity, blindness, etc. I suppose the result of such an injury depends on where the greater weakness in a body is when such an accident takes place.

We are just beginning to index the many thousands of cases in our files. Thus we are unable to put our hands on all readings pertaining to MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. In looking over the present list of briefed readings and partial index, through A to B and part of E, I find approximately fifteen cases of Multiple Sclerosis (not counting the few cases mentioned in the short case study sent you sometime ago.) To prepare these cases for an individual, it is necessary for us to put a member of our staff on each assignment - to find the readings, extract all that is relevant, prepare the material in multiple form for copyright, and mail the finished compilation.

But even when this process is complete, the material is not in a form which can be published as an inexpensive monograph. It is the conviction of our Board of Trustees that we cannot simply distribute case studies of different physical conditions until the indexing of our files is completed and the materials compiled are passed upon by our Advisory Research Board of physicians.

However, if your physician wants to study the fifteen cases we have, with the idea of research on the disease itself and you are willing to “take a chance” on finding something in them that will be of benefit to Mr. [3521] - through your physician’s research - then he will need to write us, enclosing the blank we are sending you, and asking for our available material on MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, on a consultation basis. We will then send him whatever material is accessible to us as quickly as possible. I figure that the actual cost of this emergency service of getting such material to you that we now have available will be around $100.00.

It is heartbreaking to me to not be able to send out immediately, and at little cost, whatever we have in the files, but even if the Ass’n had enough money to finance such research without setting consultation fees, the material compiled would be valueless for the layman. It can now be used only for research by physicians, who can study Case [1001], [24], etc., etc., and come to the conclusions that if such and such thing worked once, twice, ten times, in such and such a condition, it MIGHT work again - and they are the only ones who can experiment to see whether or not it will work the next time. It seems now that the Physical Readings are only valuable because of their proof, when studied, that psychic information, psychic diagnosis and treatment, DID work. From now on it is up to the physicians of every school, and research workers, to do something about it. The Ass’n has the material - do the doctors and researchers want it - and are they willing to help us get it to them?

Of course you know that we are very ANXIOUS to get out the material we have on every subject under the sun, and especially the information which may be of help along healing lines, but it seems that our hands are tied unless we have the cooperation of the physicians - and unless we can get the indexing done so that we will know just what we have to give them when the physicians DO request it. (See enclosed marked Diary-Letter of June 8, 1945, giving a reading extract on HOW this work should be done.)

Now about the Wet Cell and the Radio-Active Appliances. It is still possible to get them, from the same person who has been making them according to the reading specifications the the last few years, but it is not possible for us to tell you just how to use them in any particular case. Here, too, it is necessary for the cooperation of the physician - he must be interested in the theory behind these appliances and have the desire to test them out. Of course, in practically all cases of Multiple Sclerosis the Wet Cell Appliance is suggested. Of course, since Mr. [3521] had a personal, individual reading, it may be easier for the doctor in his case to make a comparison with other readings on similar conditions and come to a conclusion as to the best procedure.

At the Board meeting in June a decision was made to hire a trained librarian to do the indexing of these readings so that we can within a few months thereafter have available ALL the information which has been given on a particular subject [!]. This is one of the first steps to be taken before we can begin real research on the Physical Readings. In other words, when this indexing work is complete, we might have a hundred cases of Multiple Sclerosis to extract instead of the fifteen mentioned above. This would give the physician a broader scope for experimental purposes and study. However, it appears to me that the general theme of all such cases is about the same and that an interested, cooperative physician should be able to gain something of value from study of even a few cases.

Please feel free to write me about anything that is not clear. If you have any suggestions, or your physician does, as to a better way to get OUT the material you desire, don’t hesitate to let us have them.

I received your letter Monday, and reading between the lines, it is easy to see how it hurts you to have to write such letters after years of sending out ones giving definite instructions for help. So for the record, let me say that I think you are a darling. And your letter was a help, really, with the various suggestions and your kind explanations and last but not least your good wishes. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your thoughtfulness and do thank you so very much.

After reading your letter, my husband and I both feel that the chance of being helped by an individual research is so very indefinite that it would not be worth it, particularly since our financial position is not what it could be.

As you say, Case #3426 does not seem at all similar to Mr. [3521]‘s, except that the doctors diagnose both as epilepsy, unless of course the young man’s aunt is avoiding the word “convulsions”, which is unlikely. (To make our case more confusing some of the doctors say Mr. [3521] has multiple sclerosis AND epilepsy, whereas others say two such conditions would not occur together and it is only multiple sclerosis. Mr. [3521] thinks they’re all wrong, and that his Reading is right.)

Thank you for Dr. Bidwell’s name. I have written to him and hope that he may be able to help us. It does seem significant that he came on the scene just after Mr. Cayce left, doesn’t it?

Thanks, too, for the information about the Wet Cell. Our doctor here is interested in it and quite willing to try it, but it would seem to be best not to decide anything now, before hearing from Dr. Bidwell.

I am enclosing a copy of a letter I am mailing to Mr. Godfrey today. The time has come, I think, for us to try the Wet Cell Appliance. Everything else has failed. At the same time, we can be serving as an experiment for the Association, in using this appliance when it had not been prescribed by the readings.

Mr. [3521] has been diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis by an Oakland, Cal., physician (Mayo graduate), by a Cincinnati neurologist (Harvard grad.), by a Cincinnati surgeon and diagnostician (Mayo grad.), by a past president of the Amer. Medical Association, by a Birmingham, Ala. physician (graduate of Sewanee and Harvard), and by a Springfield physician (grad. of Johns Hopkins). These diagnoses were all after the time of his Cayce reading, and his symptoms were greatly changed from what they were at the time of the reading.

There is no use of our asking any of this array of talent to O.K. the trial use of the Wet Cell Appliance. They are all, to a man, too orthodox. And besides, my husband has been dismissed as a patient by them all. As I say in my letter to to Mr. Godfrey, we are now on our own.

I have asked Mr. Godfrey to tell me the usual charge. Though, frankly, Miss Davis, I think Mr. [3521] needs the double charge, as prescribed for Case 3124-1 Physical Rdg. - 7/31/43. Of course, it is hard to compare symptoms, but like this case, Mr. [3521] “falls when attempting to walk”, and though he is not too blind to read, still he cannot recognize a person at a distance of several yards.

If it were not for the fact that we are simply worn out with traveling, having been ordered here and there by the Signal Corps and Air Corps when he was attached to the armed forces during the war, we would come to the Beach and get in touch with one of the doctors there. But traveling is a strain, particularly on a person in my husband’s condition. So I am hoping that you will help us, even though at this distance.

The use of the appliance is not dangerous, surely. And it may be just what is needed, though we realize that it is something that will take time. But we have plenty of that. All our time and efforts at present are taken up with trying to cure this illness.

I am enclosing a check for $10.00 as a deposit on an order for one of the Wet Cell Appliances, as described in the readings of Mr. Edgar Cayce, and will send the balance as soon as you advise me how much it will be.

The appliance it to be used in treating my husband, who has been diagnosed by at least six different doctors as having multiple sclerosis. His symptoms are very like those of the cases described in Mr. Cayce’s readings, where the Wet Cell Appliance was recommended. Mr. [3521]‘s own reading of three and a half years ago did not outline this treatment for him, but since that time his symptoms have changed so much that they are very like those described.

He has been using the Radio-Active Appliance which we received from you in January, but while it may be helping him or preventing a more rapid progression of his illness, still his symptoms have grown worse in spite of it. It appears that the use of this device is not enough to check the progress, so I want to try the other.

Mr. Godfrey, my husband and I realize that this is just a “shot in the dark”, since the readings did not say he had multiple sclerosis, but we are very anxious to try it. Especially so since he has been dismissed by all his doctors as beyond the ability of medicine to help. They say that he may get well, but that there is nothing that the medical profession can do for him. His last doctor moved to California this past winter, so we have been on our own for some months.

I feel sure that you can give me a few general directions in the use of the Wet Cell Appliance. We want to try the gold chloride solution, since the readings say that multiple sclerosis is a lack of gold in the system. Could you tell me the average charge, how to prepare the solution, etc? Also, the usual places for the attachments, or at least whether the positive goes onto the spine or the front of the body. I can then try to correlate the information with the disturbed centers mentioned in his reading, to work out some system. I may not get the ideal places for the attachments on his body, but surely the gold will be entering in any case, and should do some good.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions about our trying this. And tell me how much it will all be, including the chloride of gold. Thanking you very much,

Miss Davis has turned over to me your letter of July 16th, and I have read with interest and appreciation of your difficulties your correspondence from the time of the reading.

We would like to do everything possible to assist you. Please feel free to write me fully and I will endeavor to clarify any points in the suggestions which are not clear.

First, may I ask a couple of questions:

Do you or your husband remember any accident which could have produced the lesions in the coccyx area?

When the osteopath first examined your husband did he find the lesions mentioned in the coccyx?

Paragraph one on page two of Mr. [3521]‘s reading describes the lesions which have formed in the lacteal duct and gall duct area and also indicate that reflex reactions from the coccyx injury produced trouble in the lower brain centers. This would cause the dizziness and “so called attacks” and also the eye condition.

The adhesions in the lacteal duct area would gradually produce a slowing of the liver action and gall duct trouble producing, if not corrected, Multiple Sclerosis. Please read carefully the Abstract on Multiple Sclerosis which is inclosed.

I question whether or not the proper corrections have been made in the coccyx area. Was the wet heat used and did the physician feel that he had relieved the lesions in the coccyx area?

Are osteopathic treatments being taken now? Is there a Robt. E. Davis in Springfield now? We have a record of his handling successfully a case for us once. The name was [2001]. If you do not locate him, I would certainly check with a good osteopath and have the corrections in the coccyx area made, using the original suggestions in the reading.

The Wet Cell Appliance should be used for thirty minutes each day. The plate with wire from the Gold solution should go over the lacteal duct area (width of hand from navel and about one inch up to right on body). The other plate should go over the ninth dorsal center. (Have the osteopath mark this for you.)

This Wet Cell will help relieve the liver and gall duct condition, but the cause of the trouble in the coccyx should be removed. Multiple Sclerosis is a result of the lesions in the lacteal duct area not a cause in itself.

I would suggest also that you try at the same time the Castor Oil packs and the massage recommended in the Abstract. Also note the diet suggestions.

Please let us have a report on the progress in this case. You should definitely begin to see improvement if all of the treatments can be started together.

Thank you ever so much for you letter of July 25. It is so nice of you to offer to help us, and I can’t tell you how much we appreciate it.

Mr. Godfrey sent us the wet cell appliance over a week ago, and we have started all the treatments, and surely hope we can report progress soon.

We found Dr. Robert E. Davis here, but he does not recall the other case you sent him, though he says he has treated several. So he didn’t remember anything about Mr. Cayce’s readings. However, he says he understands what is wanted and will do the best he can.

Yes, Mr. [3521] does remember two instances when injury to the coccyx might have occurred. Once, when about twelve years old, he fell from a bicycle onto car tracks, but experienced no unusual pain. The other and more likely time was in high school, when he was “playfully” kicked, as boys seem to do to each other sometimes. He felt a terrific pain immediately, but it wore off and he was not bothered by it any more. He still has no pain anywhere at any time.

Neither of the osteopaths who treated him was able to find anything wrong with the coccyx. For this reason, I agree with you in believing that the proper corrections have not been made in the coccyx area.

Yes, the wet heat was used. No osteopathic treatments have been taken recently. He took them from February 1944 to August 1945, except for three periods of two months each. He was treated every other day during all this time.

Dr. Davis has given three treatments, but says he has not attempted to find the lesions as yet. He is merely “loosening up” the muscles. Later on he will concentrate on the lesions and treat them. We’ll have to go down to his office then, as he says he cannot treat lesions on a bed, as there is too much “give” to it. This worries me, as it sounds so strenuous. Is this the usual way? Did all the multiple sclerosis cases have to go to the doctors’ offices?

He is treating Mr. [3521] twice a week, and says that to do it oftener would be “over-treating” him.

This time question has been the most baffling part of it to us. Mr. [3521]‘s reading, when referring to the diet, says “do not take these during or any time soon after the periods of these treatments”. That would indicate several periods, with rest periods in between. But how long the period would be or the rest, it is impossible to tell. The only way we can solve it as to the diet is simply to give up “carbonated waters, chocolate or sweets” entirely, until he recovers. Which probably does not harm him. But as to the rests, we cannot tell. And as all cases are so different, we can hardly expect you to help us on this point.

Thank you so much for the directions about attaching the wires on the appliance and to the body. Is the point you mentioned the center of the lacteal duct area or the lower edge?

I have been keeping the Castor Oil packs on for thirty minutes? Is that long enough? Shall I give these every day, or in cycles, resting several days? Just where does the liver area extend? Should the pack go around the side and back, too?

Then, too, I’d appreciate your opinion as to the desirability of using a “double charge” of gold solution. Was that done very often? Or would it be best to wait to see how this charge acts?

Would it be advisable to take the Camphor Solution, too, at times, to “remove drosses”, as on page 294, TIR? Mr. [3521] takes Dilantin and Mebaral to control seizures, and of these I know that the Mebaral is a sedative.

Did the readings ever say anything about what kind of water is best to use? The city water here is very hard, full of lime, and lots of chlorine added. He has been using distilled water. Would mineral water be better? (Both of these waters are made from the local water.)

We surely will appreciate it if you will advise us on all points. We are so pleased to be starting treatments with the Wet Cell Appliance, and are very optimistic about it all. Thanks again for all your help.

I am glad to learn from your letter of August 14th, that you have begun the treatments for Mr. [3521] and that you have obtained the services of Dr. Davis. It has been many years since he handled a case for us so I am not surprised that he has forgotten the names of the patient involved. I understand, however, that he is an excellent physician and I believe that you can depend upon his cooperation.

In the same mail I have just received a report from another Multiple Sclerosis case which was included in our recent case study [3080] (?). This individual has shown steady improvement since the beginning of her treatment approximately a year ago and it is very similar to your husband’s case. Hence, I wish to call your attention to it.

Thirty minutes for the oil packs is sufficient time. They should be given in cycles with about three days’ rest period in between. Yes, I think the packs should go around the side and back over the liver area. Dr. Davis can be helpful to you in locating the specific areas involved.

I do not think at this time, that I would double the charge of gold solution nor would I begin the use of camphor solution to remove drosses at the present time. I should think that the mineral water would be much better for your husband but a decision in this matter would be based upon a knowledge of just what your city water contains. If it is heavy with lime and chlorine, I should think that a change would be advisable.

I would like to call your attention to the fact that the wet cell appliances have been used in some of the most serious cases involving nervous and glandular disturbances. It is a slow treatment but it has proven most effective in a large number of cases. Note the Scleroderma, General Debilitation and Arthritis cases discussed in the back of “There Is A River”. The recoveries were certainly almost sensational.

I extend to you and Mr. [3521] my sincere wishes for a speedy recovery.

Do you mind if I call you that? It’s the way we always think of and speak of you.

First, I’d like to report on [3521]‘s condition. There are definite signs of improvement, I believe. He has gained 8 lbs. or more since August 5th, when the treatments were started. He also seems able to move his legs at the hips more easily and freely than before. Until the past week, his lower legs and feet always felt cold when I massaged them, but now they feel warm, almost normal. And he seems to be a little stronger. Of course, none of his symptoms has disappeared entirely, but in general his condition does seem somewhat better. It is really very encouraging. (He went though a period of nausea from Sept. 3 to the 10th, but seems to be over that now.)

I have a few questions, of course. One is whether the Castor Oil packs must follow immediately after the Wet Cell treatment, or may be given at any time of the day. And then I am wondering if you believe the use of Atomidine, either orally or vibrationally, would be of advantage, since his metabolism tests have shown his thyroid to be low, -18 and -20. Also, do you think the use of the ultra-violet would be beneficial? We have a Westinghouse sunlamp, 275W.

We were quite interested to read of Dr. Dobbins in the DL. While we do not want to make any change now, still if [3521] improves under the present treatment to the point where he can walk again, it might be advisable to see Dr. Dobbins then. Surely he would think it important to follow the reading to the letter, if anyone would. And we feel that the treatment described there, concerning the wet heat, etc., must be followed eventually to eliminate the convulsions. I am giving the packs now at home, but there is a time lapse of 1/2 to 3/4 hour before we reach the doctor’s office for treatment. A doctor who has implicit confidence in the readings might be willing to let me give them at this office. Does Dr. Dobbins always live in Philadelphia, or is he at the hospital there only temporarily? Please tell us about him, as we are very interested.

We were most happy to get your letter of September 16, reporting that [3521]‘s condition is showing definite signs of improvement. I hope that you will continue the treatments very carefully and that this improvement will continue.

In regard to your questions, I think it would be unnecessary to have the castor oil packs and wet cell appliance treatments follow one another. In the survey report on multiple sclerosis I note that Atomidine was suggested in several cases. One to three drops were given daily in ten-day series with rest periods in between. I suggest that you begin with one drop daily for ten days and then rest three days, and then give two drops daily for ten days and then rest a period. I do not believe that any of the cases of multiple sclerosis include the use of ultra- violet ray. There might be some drying effect that would not be good in this condition.

Dr. Frank Dobbins is now at 545 West 112th Street, New York 25, N.Y., Apartment 304. I suggest that you write him there. I do not believe that he has decided just where he will locate. He was only in Philadelphia taking refresher course at the College of Osteopathy there.

About the middle of October Mrs. Lydia Gray, one of our trustees and lecturers for the Association, plans to be in Dayton, Ohio, for a lecture. I hope that I can arrange for her to stop and see you while she is out there. I believe you would enjoy talking with her and getting first-hand information on what is going on here at headquarters.

I am sending you a report blank which I would appreciate your filling out and returning to us so that we may keep a running report on this case.

Dear Hugh Lynn:

Your Lydia is a darling! [3521] fell in love with her at first sight, and I did, too. It was so nice of her to stop here for a few minutes, and her visit had an even better effect on [3521] that I had hoped for. It gave him quite a lift, and eased his mind on several points. Please thank her again for us when you see her.

I am happy to report some definite improvement this time. On November 3rd, [3521] found that the could raise his right leg by its own power, and bend his right knee easily. This was such a sudden and definite change for the better that he was quite startled and excited by it. So much so that he had a seizure that night, but one of those more or less is unimportant. The really important thing is that this improvement has lasted.

On October 26, we stopped the Castor Oil packs. They were just too weakening. I read in the Multiple Sclerosis Case Studies, April 1945, about Case #1623 (the first one mentioned), who was told to take the Wet Cell Appliance treatment for two months before starting the Castor Oil packs. It seemed advisable to try it that way, since [3521] was so very enervated for twenty-four hours or even longer, after an application.

On November 3rd, I had an urge to check up on his calories, and found that they were extremely low for a man of his size, from 500 to 600 at least below that recommended for a person “at rest”. So we have increased the calories, and he has felt an increase in strength. (In this particular, I was overdoing the advice of the readings, and in my anxiety to give him the fresh vegetables and fruits recommended I had lost sight of this factor.)

As to the trial of Atomidine, I cannot report much success. After the first two series of ten days each, I noted on Oct. 19 that his right eye was turning to the right too much. This had never happened before. Since it might have been a coincidence, we continued taking the Atomidine until Nov. 1. But his tremor seemed to be getting worse, and his eye no better, so we stopped it on that date. Of course, it may have had a part in his subsequent improvement, - that we cannot be sure of. Lydia suggested that we try it in smaller doses with longer rests between. This we have tried. After a ten day rest, he took one drop in a glass of water before breakfast on Nov. 9 and 10th. But on both these days, he had a new development - attacks of hiccoughs that lasted for over an hour several times each day. Either the Atomidine is too potent a medicine for him right now, or this was another coincidence. Anyway, I shall stop the Atomidine until I hear from you. Another factor (there always seems to be another factor!) is that he has been taking sea kelp tablets, from 9 to 12 tablets daily. These help the spasms that he sometimes gets at night. But of course there is iodine in them, too, so I have stopped them for the time being, until he is bothered by spasms again. (The Atomidine has helped my finger nails wonderfully, so I’ll continue using it myself from time to time.)

Of course we are continuing the Wet Cell Appliance treatments, followed by peanut oil rubs. Sometimes I mix the peanut oil with grape juice, as recommended for Case #3124. I notice that this case was told to take grapes internally. [3521] has been doing that on a former medical doctor’s recommendation. He has been eating one pound of grapes daily. Would this be an excessive amount, according to the readings? Also, could the grape juice poultices recommended for Case #3124 be substituted for the Castor Oil packs? They would not be hot, I suppose, and so would not be so enervating, I would guess.

This is quite a long letter, but I know you want me to report all the problems that come up when applying treatment without a specific reading.

[3521] is looking very much better, and feels that he is improving. Lydia’s visit really did a lot for his peace of mind, and that surely must have been a factor in his most recent improvement. And we could never tell you how thankful we feel toward your dear father, whose powers for good are still being expressed in this material world.

I am certainly glad that Lydia stopped by to see you. I had hoped she would have the opportunity to do so.

Thank you for your report on [3521]‘s present condition. The details which you gave us will be extremely helpful in an ultimate study of the case.

I think you wise in adjusting the treatment to the changes in [3521]‘s physical condition. Return to the castor oil packs and the Atomidine when you feel it is advisable to do so, and by all means, cut down on the quantity and regularity of the Atomidine when using it. You might try the grape poultices for a time and note the reaction. This type of poultice has been recommended in a number of cases of intestinal infection and has proven extremely helpful. Many of the treatments as you know are designed for relief of immediate symptoms in individual cases. The wet cell appliance is a basic treatment, apparently getting at the cause of the condition.

We mailed you another book a few days ago and we hope you enjoy it. Do keep us advised from time to time of progress with [3521]‘s case.

Dear Hugh Lynn:

First of all I want to thank you for sending the book, “Human Personality”, by F. W. H. Myers. It is one that I have always wanted to read. I am finding it very interesting, and [3521] is, too. Of course, reading it aloud will take longer, so it may run into two periods, if that is alright.

I’m returning the paper on Hay Fever, for which we thank you ever so much. My mother’s case was not so bad as usual, but she did use part, especially about the vegetables.

As to [3521]‘s condition, I hardly know what to say. Sometimes I think he is better, in fact I KNOW that he is better, but he is so dreadfully weak. The improved movement of his legs continues, and his tremor is slightly better. However, when he has a seizure, it does set him back so much. Of course the castor oil packs may be good for these, and we intend to start them again soon, possibly in a short series with rest periods in between, since this seems to be a technique that is often recommended by the readings.

Do you think it would be worthwhile to try some of the Maypops combinations recommended for epilepsy? I have always thought that this would have been advised in [3521]‘s own reading, if he had the usual epilepsy. But of course, it was all so new to us then and our spiritual attitude may not have been right. I thought we had complete faith at the time, but I have wondered since then if that was the reason that [3521]‘s reading was so short.

Then, too, I want to ask your opinion on the use of carbon ash, as described on page 434 of “There Is A River”. I’ll explain the origin of this idea. [3521]‘s mother lives in Hollywood, California, and has found a doctor out there (a physio-therapist) whom she wants [3521] to see, when housing conditions get better, so we would have someplace to stay. (She lives in a hotel.) She persuaded this doctor to look at X-rays of [3521]‘s spine, and his report, describing the pressures and resultant effects on the various organs of the body, was so much like a Cayce reading that it was uncanny. He even mentioned trouble with the coccyx, as did [3521]‘s reading.

One of the things he said was that pressure on the spinal nerves was causing ultimately a lack of oxygen in the system, and that was causing the tremors. Since carbon ash was recommended in this reading on page 434 to increase the oxygen in the blood, if its use is not dangerous it might be worth a try. Please let me know what you think of this.

(The two doctors we are interested in - Dr. Dobbins and this one - would be at opposite ends of the country! Has Dr. Dobbins decided on his location yet?)

I also want to report that we have stopped the osteopathic treatments. [3521] felt that Dr. Davis was doing him no good at all. The treatment was a general osteopathic workout, and a bit strenuous. Dr. Davis would never pay the slightest attention to the reading. In fact, he always acted a bit miffed when we mentioned it. After Christmas I shall try to find another one, through the Theosophists here. I have not contacted any of them yet, but they should know of an osteopath who is at least broadminded about psychic matters, if there is such a one in town here.

I know it is hard for you to tell from my reports, so it would be hard to say, but do you think that [3521]‘s progress is satisfactory? I don’t suppose that cases such as his usually walk in this time. His eyesight is still bad, too. It is hard not to be discouraged.

Tell Lydia that we have started with Mrs. Hellmueller and think that it is going to help. Her letters are most inspirational, and I believe her treatment will hasten [3521]‘s recovery. And tell Gladys that I shall send in my dues about January first. I don’t know whether I’m over-due or “under-due”, but that seems like a good time, anyway.

Please let me know what you think of the carbon ash idea. A week’s trial or so should be enough to tell if it will help the tremors, wouldn’t you think so? Thanks again for all your help and encouragement.

I think if [3521] were under the care of a cooperative physician, it might be possible to try the carbon ash. This is used with an ultra-violet lamp. Perhaps Dr. Dobbins could recommend an osteopath in your community who would be more cooperative after receiving a letter from him.

We are glad to hear about your work with Mrs. Hellmueller. I hope she can be of some real help. Lydia gave a very fine report on her.

I know what you are struggling against and I appreciate the courage and tenacity with which you are facing the situation. Please keep us advised on progress and let us try to be of help in any way in which we possibly can. You are frequently in our prayers and thoughts.

We are considering moving to a milder climate, and one where soil conditions are different. In our present location, climatic and soil conditions are very bad, and we believe that a change might help [3521].

I am writing to ask whether the readings ever recommended a locale for multiple sclerosis. I know they said that the condition was due to a lack of gold in the system. Also, that packing in the sand at Virginia Beach, which was of high gold content and radio-active, was recommended. But was this for multiple sclerosis cases?

However, we want to go farther south, and are considering the west coast of Florida or southern Alabama. Please tell me if ALL seashores are beneficial. Or would the southeastern seaboard be better? And how about California? ([3521]‘s mother lives in Hollywood, but has no place for us, as she is in a hotel. She says the housing situation is really bad there. But I know it is everywhere.)

As for food, I know the readings recommend fish for multiple sclerosis, so maybe all food grown along the coast would be better than that grown inland. Of course, we’ll keep up the Wet Cell treatments, wherever we go.

I know that you are very busy, and hope that these questions won’t be too much trouble, but I did want to check before we decide on a place.

[3521]‘s morale is still fine, but he is terribly weak, so weak that if we don’t move, he won’t be able to get out into the sunshine at all this summer, as it is too much effort to climb up and down the stairs everyday. We’ll have to find a place with a first-floor bedroom and bath. Everybody thinks we’re crazy to think of moving, but we both have a terrific urge to do so, so I feel that it is all right. (Do you happen to know of a vacant shack down South?)

The book you said you were sending has not arrived as yet, but is probably down at the P.O., which is notoriously slow. We received a Christmas card on Jan. 16, which was postmarked on Dec. 16! That’s an example of their speed!

I was glad to have your letter of February 9th, but I am afraid I can’t be too much help as to the proper climate for multiple sclerosis cases.

For many years, the readings indicated that Virginia Beach is one of the healthiest spots in this country. This was a general statement and involved the consideration that we have the combination of ocean, pines, sand, etc. As you point out, however, our winter climate may not be moderate enough for you. There is an excellent nursing home here at Virginia Beach with ground floor rooms and baths. We have had patients there before. It would be nice having you here at the headquarters except for the fact that all of the bedrooms are on the second floor.

Readings have indicated that the west coast of Florida is preferable from a health standpoint to the east coast. Neither Gladys nor I remember anything specific about the southern section of Alabama. Coastal areas would certainly be better from the standpoint of diet, as fish, shellfish, etc. direct from the ocean would be better than inland seafood.

Tom Sugrue spends the summers in Clearwater Beach, Fla. and has found it very satisfactory. The readings recommended it for him.

I certainly hope you enjoy the book. It is one of the best of its kind.

Dear Hugh Lynn,

It seems that periodically I turn to you for help. Right now it’s about [3521]‘s tremor, which has been bad lately. In general, he seems to be improved by the physiotherapy he has been taking - lots of reflexes returning, etc. - but the tremor is so wearing physically that he is awfully tired. Do the readings say anything about tremors in general? It is an “intentional” tremor, that is, it comes when he uses his muscles. This is the opposite of palsy, you know, where they have tremor all the time and it stops when they use their muscles.

I am enclosing a check for one dollar for copies of the two Multiple Sclerosis leaflets. Ours are at home, packed away somewhere.

We aren’t using the wet cell out here, because there is no place to dispose of the used chemicals. I assume the old solution cannot be poured down a drain in the bathroom or kitchen. Is that right?

Our medical doctor here tried to get us gold chloride last year, but the druggist said it was not available. That is silly, because we got it from Mr. Godfrey two years ago, to use with the wet cell. Would it be possible to get it from him to be taken INTERNALLY? Surely a small amount would not be harmful. The doctor finally got us gold bromide, but that did not help.

One last question - do peanuts rate as beans or nuts? The article in the Searchlight brought up this question.

Congratulations on the Searchlight, by the way! It is fine, a very compact little pamphlet and most interesting. We like it a lot.

Are you using regular peanut oil massages for [3521]? I think this might be extremely helpful if you are not following through on this.

I am sorry to hear that you are not using the wet cell. The solution really should be poured out on the ground when it is changed. However, I do not believe that it would be detrimental to flush it down a toilet if necessary.

I am sure we can get the chloride of gold here if you would like to have it. Mr. Godfrey certainly can secure it for you and send it to you in the little glass capsule.

You have me on the matter of the peanuts. I’ll have to look them up. I imagine they would line up somewhere under ground bean class.

Thanks ever so much for your letter of January 24. We are delighted that we can get the gold chloride from Mr. Godfrey. Would it be too much trouble to you to ask him to send us some C.O.D.? I do not know just how much to ask for or which form is used when taken internally. If in the grains, how do you measure it? I can get distilled water here, of course, if that is necessary. Please explain to me about taking it. [3521] is a large man, six feet one inch, 180 lbs. normally, now about 165. Would this affect the amount to be taken?

Yes, I’m giving him the peanut oil massages, and they seem to help. He has physiotherapy treatments once a week, and the doctor uses a mineral oil massage then. (I think I told you that we came out to the present doctor because his diagnosis from spinal x-ray was so close to [3521]‘s reading.)

[3521] also takes beef juice, as in “Eat To Live”, and now he has started with olive oil, as in the multiple sclerosis leaflet. (Thanks for sending the copies.) We intend to start up with the Wet Cell again when we get back to …, O., which we hope won’t be so far in the future.

There is one thing, though, that worries me about the Wet Cell. The theory of it, I read somewhere is the WRE’s, is that it sets up a vibratory rate (?) in the body which enables it better to utilize the gold in foods. But what if there is NO GOLD IN THE FOODS? According to Dr. James Asa Shield, of Tucker Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, the conditions which lead to multiple sclerosis are set up by the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture, which replaces some minerals in the soil, but neglects to put back what he calls “trace” minerals. Gold is obviously one of these, since it is in the soil in such minute amounts that it is overlooked by orthodox science. Then when the body is changed chemically by the foods, if an injury occurs, it is unable to heal itself. Dr. Shield bases his theory on the fact that M.S. is unknown among the Chinese, or it was unknown until some chemical fertilizers were imported in recent years. Since reading his speech on this subject, we have been trying to buy organically-raised vegetables, but so far haven’t been successful. But this is really a point to consider, and when we do start up with the Wet Cell again, it would probably be best to continue taking gold internally, too. Don’t you think so?

It will be necessary for her doctor to have the druggist out there prepare it in the proper form for using; it should not be used unless he (the M.D.) prescribes it and the correct dosage, etc.

I looked through a few multiple sclerosis cases and could not find one recommending Gold internally (but always in the Wet Cell). However, I have just indexed a case of a young married woman who wanted to become pregnant. The Gold was recommended internally, “to aid conception, to produce greater ovulation,” as follows:

5371-1: Prepare 2 solutions, 1 with Bromide of Soda - 20 grains in 1 ounce distilled water; the other with Chloride of Gold Sodium - 2 (two) grains to each ounce of distilled water. Dose: Each morning before a meal is taken, for 10 days in succession, put in half a glass of water 1 drop of the Gold Solution and 1 drop of the Soda Solution. Stir and drink immediately. Keep this up for 10 days, then leave off 10 days, and so on…

The gold chloride arrived safely, and [3521] has been using it for a month, and we feel that it may be helping him already. Our physiotherapist has noticed several small signs of improvement, which is encouraging. Of course, we realize that it will take time, but it is a relief to be on the gold at last, since the readings said that multiple sclerosis is the result of a lack of gold in the system.

Thank you, too, for the instructions for taking the gold. There is one question. One of the readings recommending the gold said to see that the solution does not deteriorate too fast. How can this be determined?

We were happy to receive the information about Threefold Farm. It sounds very interesting and I shall try to write to them soon.

Dear Miss Davis, Recently I wrote Mr. Godfrey about the Wet Cell Appliance materials and asked him in the letter whether the readings ever recommended the Wet Cell in cases of multiple sclerosis with convulsive seizures, which is a rare symptom that [3521] has. I mentioned that the doctors say that [3521] does not have epilepsy but that he has to take sedatives just as if he did have, to control the seizures.

Mr. Godfrey answered quickly that he was under the impression that the readings advised against using strong sedatives while taking Wet Cell treatments. He said he wasn’t sure and advised me to write to you. Do you know about this? [3521]‘s sedative is 2 and 1/4 grains phenobarbitol daily. Is this considered strong?

Do you know if any of the cases which had Cayce readings were combinations of multiple sclerosis and convulsions? The only one that I’ve read about that sounds like that is 1623-p-1-6/30/38, in the study on Psychic Information on Multiple Sclerosis, April 1945. Would it be possible to correspond with that case, if this is so? Or could you give us more information about it?

If the Wet Cell Appliance isn’t recommended, with seizures or sedatives, how about the Radio-active? [3521] has one of those, and maybe it would be better to start up with it again, though it never seemed to help him as much as the Wet Cell. It seems like a vicious circle - he needs the Wet Cell to help the multiple sclerosis, but can’t use it until he can go without the sedatives, and he can’t go without them until he is well! Unless there is some other way of controlling seizures besides the use of sedatives.

[3521] takes osteopathic treatments once a week, and I apply an electric hotpad beforehand, when possible. As usual, the osteopath won’t follow the readings. However, he seems very good, and maybe he is following it unconsciously (he did read it through), for [3521] has improved since starting these in October.

Multiple sclerosis combined with convulsions is indeed an unfortunate condition. It seems so much more serious than was indicated by our Cayce reading. Miss Davis, there wasn’t anything too pessimistic in the reading so that it was withheld from us, was there? If there was, I would like to know it now. I think that if there were something like that, it would be better not to ask [3521] to undergo useless treatments, though of course the osteopathic should be continued for his comfort. Of course, I would not tell him in any case, but please let me know.

I am truly sorry to keep troubling you all there with our personal problem, when you have already been such a help and inspiration to us. But if you can help us again, we will really appreciate it. I honestly don’t know where else to true, except to you.

Dear Mr. Godfrey,

Thanks ever so much for your airmail letter about the sedative and the Wet Cell. I’ve written to Miss Davis, and haven’t had a reply as yet. In the meantime we have made a shift in the timing which has helped a lot. [3521] was taking part of the sedative at 9 p.m., just before taking the Wet Cell treatment at 9:15 or 9:30, then the rest of the sedative at 10:30. Now he takes all of it after the Wet Cell and oil massage, at 10:30. And really the greatest improvement he has had has been since this switchover. We are certainly grateful to you that you wrote us about it.

Now I am concerned about the gold solution and the way it is acting. After only five days, it is entirely colorless. Dark particles cling to the U-shaped wire, but no doubt that is normal. Does the lack of color mean the solution is deteriorating too fast? If so, what shall I do? Would it be good to start with the camphor solution, to rid the system of “drosses” from the sedative?

Is it all right to use the radio-active with sedatives? I don’t like to change, though, as the Wet Cell has seemed to help him more. He takes 2 grains phenobarbital daily, a slight reduction during the past few weeks. It would be wonderful to do without sedatives, but he needs something to control the seizures.

It is all so confusing to me. If only Mr. Cayce had left an “heir” to carry on with his wonderful readings! But I guess this is part of our adverse karma, so we must do the best we can.

We certainly do thank you for your help. It was so nice of you to send your quick reply and we really did appreciate it. I hope I haven’t asked TOO many questions in this letter. I’m always in a quandary, it seems.

After surveying a number of multiple sclerosis and epilepsy cases I find nothing in the EC readings about it being harmful to use sedatives while using the Wet Cell Appliance. In Thomas Sugrue’s case, for instance (of static arthritis, which called for the Wet Cell carrying Gold AND Atomidine, alternately), he was told in the readings to use cobra venom

• and at another time bee venom - besides sedatives of various other kinds from time to time. If it had been harmful I’m sure the readings would not have recommended the Wet Cell for him at the same time.

I think Mr. Godfrey must be referring to an instance when the reading warmed of using high electricity while alcohol was in the system. It was talking to a man addicted to drink and said that to use high electricity with alcohol in the system was very destructive to tissue. However, the Wet Cell is the very lowest form of electricity and possibly would not be harmful even in such an instance.

We hope that Mr. [3521] is still improving. The very fact that he has shown improvement indicates that the combination is not harmful. Of course, the readings always stressed cutting down on sedatives as fast as possible, but they never advised stopping them all of a sudden in cases where the system had come to depend on them.

R43. 3/27/50 [3521]’ wife’s letter to GD:

Dear Miss Davis,

I’m awfully sorry to be so slow sending in these reports, and really have no excuse, except that in the case of the Epilepsy - Neurasthenia one I was hoping to be able to report some real progress. Unfortunately I cannot, so far. However, the abstracts were helpful. From the information in them, I believe [3521]‘s condition would not be classified as neurasthenia. It is more like epilepsy, as the gall bladder and lacteals are involved, according to his own Cayce reading. The medical diagnosis is multiple sclerosis with the rare symptom of seizures, and it must be admitted that his condition is more than just epilepsy. I guess it could be called a combination of the two.

As to treatment, we still have not decided just which is best - the Radio-Active appliance, the Wet Cell or the Castor Oil packs, but are alternating between the last two at present. The use of the Wet Cell worries me, as in the epilepsy report, it was not recommended for any case of grand mal, which is the type of [3521]‘s seizures. But there is no indication that the Radio-Active is helpful in multiple sclerosis, and if he has this and needs gold in his system, that should be important.

As to the lack of gold, case #2596 (Neurasthenia) is interesting, as it involved the brain, and gold and sodium bromide was advised. Do you know if the Wet Cell was, also?

Our greatest headache is the prevention of the seizures. The continued use of phenobarbital has been beginning to tell on his system, and recently the osteopath has switched him over to Tri-bromide, which so far is acting fairly well, though the seizures ar still not controlled.

I was very disappointed in the abstracts, in that the diet or diets were not given more explicitly, as is in others, for instance the arthritis case in “There Is A River”. Recently, the osteopath has put [3521] on a new diet developed by an Italian doctor after World War II (for epilepsy), and I must admit that it has done more immediate good than any of the information in the abstracts or health hints. Oddly enough, this diet is very much like the diet for arthritis in TIR, but is even more specific as to what can be taken and what cannot. But I would like to know just what foods are omitted in the Cayce recommendations for epilepsy, because I think the readings usually recommend grape juice and almonds, both of which are not allowed in the diet given [3521] by the osteopath.

All in all, I think that the abstracts would be much more helpful if they contained detailed lists of foods - those recommended, those possible, and those definitely suspect and to be avoided. That would be a basis for a trial and error experiment.

Under separate cover coming to you from Meredith Drug Co. is a quart of Mayblossom Bitters, c.o.d., which the druggist informed me will arrive at a cost of approximately 6 or 7. I had no idea the cost would be that much when I ordered it for you, though I do know the crude drugs that have to be boiled and simmered, etc., run quite expensive. I do hope this is alright. I’m sure you are doing well to give the Bitters a try, in an effort to cut down the sedatives.

I’m enclosing an Alkalin Diet List which was recommended in the majority of readings. Especially in epilepsy cases I remember a warning against candies, cakes, chocolate, and carbonated waters; also starches were to be minimized, such as breads and pastries. I don’t know whether this was because the people who had the readings seemed to have a weakness for those foods, or whether the disease itself should be cut off from those foods.

Thanks every and every so much for the two folders. I have sent the information on Cataracts on to our friend, but of course cannot tell his reaction. I do hope he will decide to use some of it, as it seemed to contain several valuable hints as to the cause of such conditions.

[3521] and I especially thank you for the information on the epilepsy cases. It is amazing how close the diet suggested is to the one the doctor gave us. We are going to adapt ours to fit part of the reading extracts, and are sure that the changes - though not so very many - will be most helpful, and maybe just what is needed. I’m patterning [3521]‘s diet on the “middle” one - [567]. Case [543] is probably rather active physically, compared to [3521] I’d guess, while [561]‘s diet is really extreme. Since our doctor prefers to come once a week, rather than in periods, it would be most weakening to use [561] diet over an extended period of time. If you have any copies of diets of other epilepsy cases, I’d really appreciate looking them over, too.

Please give the enclosed check for $25.00 to the membership secretary, - Miss Bonney, isn’t it? I’m changing to Active this year, though actually I cannot really be very ACTIVE in the Association, personally.

Could I ask you as a special favor to please tell me how much grape juice daily was recommended to Case #3124 (P-1-7/31/43) for multiple sclerosis? I am puzzled that this seems to be the only case in which it was recommended. It seems to help [3521] but maybe he is not getting enough. And to what portions of the body were the grape poultices applied? I am interested in this case since, like [3521] he was given a diagnosis of being a “hopeless case”. I’m also interested in Case [1623] Physical Rdg. - 6/30/38) as that is a man near [3521]‘s age. Do you ever lend copies of readings?

I could not give [3521] the poultices now, as he is still in the hospital. Evidently Gould Farm was more co-operative than any place or doctor we have contacted. I am happy to report that [3521] is better lately, even though still unable to walk. I’m sure that being on the Prayer Group’s list has helped. Our interest in the physical applications doesn’t mean a lack of faith in the power of prayer.

Thanks so much for the vault copy of Multiple Sclerosis cases, which I am returning. It is very interesting, and has some suggestions which would be helpful, if I ever get into a position to use them. Also, if I have the energy. [3521] is still in the hospital, and they insist that I am unable to care for him, or rather that it is better to keep him there. Probably both.

I am sorry that cases #3124 and #1623 were not in the folder, except briefly, as they are the ones I am most interested in. I probably shouldn’t be writing tonight, as I am so discouraged. [3521] isn’t getting better, to any appreciable extent, and the doctor just pooh-poohs any special diet, - he thinks chocolate cake is all right for a patient, etc. It is very discouraging. Maybe I’ll feel better later about everything. I am certainly having to rely on God, for nothing constructive is being done for him in the physical.

Thanks every so much for the enclosed material (Atrophy, Progressive Muscular [5193]). I believe it is going to help, for the Wet Cell seems MUCH more effective for [3521] when the charcoal is left out! It is hard to understand why this is so. Do the readings explain it? Do you know of any other cases where this was done? Maybe they would have other hints that would be helpful.

I have a few questions. When the iodine is used, is it left suspended in the solution while being used? The reading does not make that clear. In fact, I’m very confused about attaching the iodine. So far, we have used just the gold, but it might be worthwhile to try the iodine, too.

Also, is it possible to get silver rods for the Appliance now? I think ours is chromium. It is very shiny and smooth, and different in appearance from the silver plate. Wouldn’t silver be better, if obtainable? Such little things seem to make such a difference.

Last week [3521] had a bad spell, and from the symptoms we think it was a gallbladder upset, which of course ties in with his reading. Could you send us any material on gallbladder trouble? Not gallstones, necessarily, though of course he may have these, too. He has no pain there, however. We would like especially to know what the readings advised in the way of diet in such a condition, as well as treatment.

The Ichthammol ointment works fine to relieve soreness in the hips, though he has no actual bedsores. Thanks ever so much for telling us about it, as it is really a help.

Miss Davis gave me your letter of September 26. I sent it to Marsden Godfrey and last night discussed it briefly with him.

I think it is very possible that the Wet Cell Appliance is just beginning to take effect. The revitalizing of nerve tissue is a very slow process (something medical science says is impossible, you know). As I understand it from Mr. Godfrey the iodine can be left in the solution suspended in a sealed glass container. I think perhaps it might be more helpful to try alternate treatments with the nitrate of silver and then the iodine. The rod in the Appliance is, I believe, of nickel and copper while your plate is made of German silver which is at present extremely difficult to obtain.

We are happy to hear that there is improvement with [3521]‘s condition. Our very best wishes to you both.

Thank you so much for your letter of October 24, with the suggestion to try nitrate of silver with the Wet Cell Appliance. That sounds like a very good idea. Would you, or someone else there, be so kind as to tell me the proper amounts and proportions? Also, whether the attachments are located the same as when gold is used. We are encouraged by [3521]‘s recent improvement, for as you say, it shows the revitalizing of nerve tissue.

We liked your article in the November 1 Searchlight, and certainly agree with you that the suggestions in the readings should be tried out. If you will send me a few extra copies, I’ll approach the National Epilepsy League in Chicago, with whom I occasionally correspond.

The article was especially interesting to us, for as you may remember [3521] has the symptom of seizures along with his multiple sclerosis. Please tell me about the herb compound mentioned. Is it the 543-P-1 one [Maypop Bitters]? We have tried that and it didn’t seem to help. If there is another or more compounds used, I’d like to hear about them, even ones suggested very rarely, or even only once. For [3521]‘s case seems to be a rare one, with complications which make treatment difficult.

Thank you for your recent answer to my letter of questions. However, I still am not clear about the location of the lumbar axis. You said to “measure between the hipbones”. Do you mean on a level with the top of the hipbone at the sides or right on the junction with spinal column? It’s the position on the spinal column itself that puzzles me. I have been attaching about an inch above the junction with hipbone.

Would someone please do me a big favor and look up the foods that the readings said cause alcohol (ethyl) in the system? The reference is in the WRE, Jan. 11, 1946, and the case [487]. Of course, there may be other cases, too. We have a hunch that these foods may be disturbing to [3521] and would like to try omitting them for a trial period.

R57. 4/11/60 [3521]‘s wife inquired about A.R.E. group work near her in Florida.

R58. 7/60 Dr. Walter N. Pahnke’s note in survey of 96 cases of epilepsy from the Edgar Cayce records:

Case [3521] Given in 1943. 37 year old male. This case was classified in group 2. Doctors classified this case as multiple sclerosis. The convulsive seizures which the patient also had were described as not true epilepsy by the doctors. The patient definitely did have multiple sclerosis. The reading gave no definite diagnosis. There was no adequate description of the tremors and convulsions. There was a good follow up from 1943 to [Dec.] 1953 when he died. The patient apparently tried many types of treatments given in the readings, for both his and other cases, but the report was that no real help was ever given.

R59. 7/60 Dr. Walter N. Pahnke’s note in survey of 69 cases of multiple sclerosis from the Edgar Cayce records:

Case #3521. 37 yr. old male. 1 PR in 1943. No diagnosis was given before the reading. Symptoms were convulsive seizures, staggering, tremor in hand and double vision. Reading gave the cause as an injury to the upper portion of the coccyx end of the spine, which caused pressures upon the sphincter centers and also caused lesions to be formed in the gall duct and lacteal duct areas. All these caused the dizziness, tendency for constipation, and the convulsive reactions at the base of the brain, because of a circulation condition affecting the nerve forces in the area of the Medulla Oblongata and C1 and C2. Treatment: Wet heat, to the low back, followed by osteopathic manipulation. Diet: Semi solid and liquid foods, no carbonated waters, chocolate or sweets. Gall duct should be drained osteopathically, which would in turn stimulate the activity of the lacteal duct. Double vision was explained by pressures in the upper dorsal and upper cervical areas, which reflected upon the nerves of the sensory system. After the reading, patient gave the diagnosis given by many medical doctors as MS as the basic condition, with convulsions along with it. Other doctors thought that there was a double diagnosis of MS and Epilepsy. The treatment given by the reading would seem to be more along the lines of that suggested for epilepsy rather than MS. The reading does not mention MS at all, or give any of the usual treatments for it. Patient’s wife sent many reports. After the death of Edgar Cayce the patient tried many treatments which had been given for MS cases, including the Wet Cell Appliance, oil rubs, diet suggestions, and other epilepsy treatments, including castor oil packs, maypop bitters and diet suggestion. After 1 1/2 years of treatments, there was no considerable change. But the wife of the patient continued trying any treatment she could find in other readings and also sedatives given by doctors. In the Wet Cell, she tried gold chloride, silver nitrate, and camphor. The seizures became more frequent in spite of all treatments, and multiple sclerosis became worse, so that eventually the patient had to be confined to a hospital. The patient finally died in [Dec.] 1953. This case should definitely be considered MS. The treatments seem to have been followed, both the treatments given in the one reading and also most of the other treatments recommended for MS cases. However, this was a treatment failure.
