This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 105th Street & Ocean, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of September, 1931, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [543].

Time of Reading 3:20 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Va. (Physical Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body and those conditions as surround the body, [543] - this we have had before. In many ways the physical conditions, as we find, have not altered materially since last we had same here; while there are many changes as for the eliminating of the causes and for the cleansing of the physical system, as respecting that that PRODUCES those reactions in the nervous system, and the suppressions in portions of the system. In the physical functioning, these are rather suppressed than reacting in the normal manner under the suppression. In the reactions for the betterment, we would find, were those properties [of passion flower used] as has been OUTLINED, with the changes as will be necessary in the improvements, [they] would eliminate and eradicate the causes. [See 543-11.] In making the changes, it will be found that these may NOT be changed too suddenly, [from Dr. Harry L. James’ medicine?] but with the preparation of those properties as will act with the glands of the system, with the nervous forces and reactions of the body, they would be gradually rid of ONE portion and gradually take on those of the other. Ready for questions.

2. (Q) Is the sleepiness or unnatural feeling caused by the effects of any of the medicines being taken? (A) They are.

3. (Q) Please specifically outline for the body’s diversion, work. (A) This would necessarily mean gradually changes, as there is a change IN the reactions for the system; for with PRESENT MENTAL reactions to the whole of the nervous system, these would not allow for a great deal activity as would be required in mental responses with physical reactions, but as the changes come about, more of that that will be outside, or in the open, that as will require those of PHYSICAL exertion, as well as of MENTAL directing - as of walking, golfing, and the like. These would be well as recreation.

In those of specific things, taking up those as of drawing, outlining, or the like, will be well, as would be definite work that might be undertaken in anything of that nature. They would be changed or altered, to be sure, AS the reactions are for the better BALANCING for the physical body.

4. (Q) Would you suggest any study at the university? Atlantic University] (A) If in the line of art, would be well. As of weaving, drawing, or the like.

5. (Q) How many osteopathic treatments a week should body take with the changes as would be made? (A) At least twice a week, until there is at least an even balance - then these may be changed.

6. (Q) Should the light treatments be continued? (A) Should be continued.

7. (Q) In the same manner? (A) In the same manner.

8. (Q) Is the medicine the body is taking sufficient for eliminations? (A) When there is the necessity for those [results] of a more perfect elimination, which will be found - as there are changes - then these would be well to be taken in a way and manner as to produce less acids, so that we would change as to this: An alternation - that is, one day one, the next day another - see? those Phenolax, Milk of Bismuth, Milk of Magnesia, and Honeyida water. [Hunyadi Water - A purgative mineral water brought from Hunyadi, Hungary]

9. (Q) Would occasional smoking injure the body? (A) Wouldn’t be any HELPFUL to the body, until there is a change in the nervous reactions in system - than it might be well.

10. (Q) Would it be better physically for the body to go against the parents’ wishes regarding changing treatment? (A) That’s for those, for the parents and those in charge of the body to decide for themselves! We have given the conditions, and that as is existent!

11. (Q) Has the body any pyorrhea? (A) Not true pyorrhea; there are some accumulations as of film. We would find that any of the dentifrices that carry iodine and salt would be helpful to same.

12. (Q) Which ones carry iodine and salt? (A) Iodent or Ipsab, or any of those.

13. (Q) Any other suggestions that would be helpful for the body at this time? (A) These have been given. These we would do. We are through.

R1. 9/27/31 (Sunday) Special Delivery letter sent to EC:

My Dear Mr. Cayce:

“Yesterday I wrote [543], after wiring her & I am enclosing you a copy of my letter to [543] (please do not let her know, that I sent you a copy of my letter to her, or this letter to you).

“[543] sent copy of your reading, which we are pleased that you gave at her request, I enclose you a check for same.

“My wife talked to your sister, suggesting that you request [543] to read more at least an hour or two each day, Miss Cayce said you had such a wonderful library, she knew you could select books, that would interest her, at same time get her mind trained to think of other things, than her condition, I hope that you will at your earliest convenience have [543] to do this.

“[543] writes for her money on her savings account at bank, also said she wanted to sell some stock, if possible will you find out why she wants to do this, she gave no reason, at times she is inclined to spend money, I would say, indiscreetly, which we cannot afford, nor can she, if you can or would ask that YOU SUGGEST ECONOMY TO HER.

“Your reading directs two treatments weekly, we hope that this can soon be reduced to one each week, for she has to go to Norfolk for them, making a total cost of about $4.00 for each treatment.

“[543] writes she has no faith in Dr. James’ treatment, and wanted to go on medicine outlined in your reading, we wired her to follow your readings & advice, in her letter she wrote that she was inclined to be drowsy, sleepy, & etc. will say when at home, she seemed to be just to the reverse, wanted to be going all the time, we cannot understand this, as she is now taking the same medicine.

“I have a notice and bill for medicine from Dr. James dated Sept. 24th, so I assume this has been received by Miss Cayce, from my conversation with you & your readings I assume that the medicine you prepared would be used, possibly in connection with Dr. James, so far as your readings specified, however we want you to know, that it is our desire to give our consent and desire to carry out your readings, and personal advice in [543]‘s case.

“Pardon this lengthly letter, but wanted to go fully in details, with my highest esteem and kind personal regards,”

R2. 10/6/31 EC’s letter:

“I have yours of the 27th, also of the 2nd. The last I have turned over to Sister and have asked her to write you at once. Upon receipt of the wire, [543] phoned me at once and asked that we prepare the medicine which had been suggested in the reading. [543-11] This we had prepared, and she has begun taking it. However, Sister no doubt has acquainted you with just how much of Dr. James’ she has been taking, and is taking at present, and just what she feels are the results from the change made. I tried to talk to [543] about her asking for the sale of the stock, etc., and she very flatly told me she knew what she was doing. To be sure, we will make every effort to keep the cost of everything just as low as possible, and will advise with her just as much as we possibly can as to what we feel is the right and proper thing. We have already arranged about her reading, and she seems to be taking up this quite well, as she is some other things that have been suggested for her - which seems to be very helpful. I’m sure Sister will let you know all about it.

“You can let me know whether you and Mrs. […] feel it would be better for her to return to Dr. James’ medicine, or to go on with that she is taking at present. Of course, that’s the thing for you to decide. We wouldn’t undertake it, because we DO NOT desire to induce anyone to subscribe to anything we are trying to do. That must be the choice of the individual, or the ones responsible for that individual.

“I appreciate your writing me. With all good wishes and love from all, I am”

R3. 10/9/31 Letter to EC:

My Dear Mr. Cayce:

“Answering your letter of Oct. 6th, first want to thank you.

“I discussed with my wife the part of your letter relative to [543] taking Dr. James’ medicine, or as you express it “TO GO ON WITH THAT SHE IS TAKING AT PRESENT”. I assume, this, she is taking now, is accordance with your reading, OUR DECISION is to have her to take your “READING” as her guide, in taking medicine and treatments.

“In your next reading, please ask the question, IF ONE OSTEOPATHIC treatment weekly is sufficient, or should she take two each week, we also, want to have her comply with your reading in this.

“We are so gratified to know that [543] is more interested in, reading, darning, and hope your sister will allow her to assist in the home, I believe this would also, be so helpful, as it gives her something to be actively interested in.

“In my letter of Sept. 27th we wrote that it was our desire for your readings to be adhereed to in [543]‘s treatment, I hope that you will act in this case, knowing have fully decided for [543] to take such medicine, as your readings outline, feeling sure it is for the best.

“With very kind personal regards, and love for all, I beg to remain.”

R4. 10/12/31 EC’s letter: “Even the doctor [M. L. Richardson, D.O.?] has remarked on [543]‘s improvement since following the medicine given in the rdg. [543-11] and leaving off that sent by Dr. James. I certainly hope her condition will justify the faith and confidence she has expressed, as well as yourself and Mrs. […]. This seems, for the time at least, to be one of the most helpful things that has come to [543] in some time, and I hope it keeps up. I do not know that it is really necessary for a ck. rdg. tomorrow, but she has asked for it… I am not going to make these [ck. rdgs.] unless there is something in her condition that the doctor, you, or some of us feel justifies another rdg.”
