This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 2nd day of May, 1929, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [5554].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. Milton Brown and Mr. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 3:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ohio. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: We have the body here. Now, the physical conditions of this body are not good. There is little resistance, and the body is taxing self too much. The conditions are complications, and will require many changes to bring about the near normal condition, not only in the applications as would be made for the physical forces, but in place of residence also changes should be made.
-
These, as we find, have to do with the many varied effects as are produced about bacilli that attacks the system itself proper, and of conditions as are brought about in the system through injury, as well as through that of a disturbed condition through the effects of these various conditions or forces as have been affecting the body.
-
These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, of [5554] we are speaking of:
-
The BLOOD SUPPLY shows little resistance. While the body through its mental and physical self as applied from the mental body, urges self on to act - for the body in action keeps going.
-
The NERVE FORCES of the body are taut throughout, and the body finds little rest - and that often disturbed.
-
In the physical functioning of ORGANS we find the greater distress.
-
The lungs show the effect of bacilli attacking same. Temperature arises from the breaking up of cell, and of the attempts to create resistive forces necessary to meet the needs. Hence the blood itself shows deficiency in the red, and excess in the white, and leucocyte in itself forming the character of anemia that follows from the effect of tubercular effection.
-
In the digestive system, this also is apparent in the condition as is shown with liver and spleen, being over-active through those applications as has been given, as WELL as the condition as exists in the region of the ascending colon.
-
These, then, are the disturbing forces, and an injury to the body brought about that first condition in the side - yet the effects and the detrimental forces produced the weakness in the system that aided and abetted the activity of the bacilli.
-
First we would move from the present surroundings, preferably to that of such a climate as Asheville, North Carolina. We would stay in the open as much as possible; ROUGH IT as much as possible - corn bread, buttermilk, beans. Occasionally that of liver, preferable the calf liver or beef liver, should be taken to add the VITAMINS for the system. Using also that as an inhalant of the brandy, or gases from brandy - apple brandy. Not the brandy itself, but put half a gallon in a charred container - keep this where evaporation would occur, and at least three times each day, or oftener, when there is nausea or tendency to cough, inhale DEEP into the lungs. We would also, after this condition has been assisted, have - through operative forces - the removal of that condition existent in the right side, though this body would not stand operation under the PRESENT condition; and when the body is bettered, through five to six weeks of such “roughing” and such treatments as outlined, we would give further suggestions for the full correction of this body, [5554]. Do that at present.
-
Little of the medicinal properties, other than the inhalant, or of those of codliver oil and plenty of OLIVE oil - all the body will assimilate should be taken, but the food values, much of the rough as the body can take well. Do that. We are through for the present.
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/4/29 Letter: ”…My condition I think has improved a little although I do not think that I have taken on any weight. My appetite is fair and I eat three good rich meals a day but I do not gain my strength. I did not go to Asheville, North Carolina to date on account of various conditions, and now the weather here is warm but perhaps not so dry as Asheville.
“You say my condition was caused by being hurt in the right side. I can not recall any accident at any time in my life. However, my domestic affairs have been terrible the past four years and I thought perhaps the aggravation might have been the cause of defective digestion and perhaps other ailments, as I have been extremely nervous and worry continually about my condition which also causes me to smoke quite a few cigarettes. I do not feel physically fit to do any roughing or outside exercise as it causes my heart to thump and my stomach to burn. I notice in your hospital booklet the library and lecture hall and upon reading the second chapter in ‘Heaven On Earth’ causes me to feel like there is a cure for me as I’m willing to sacrifice what I have, as I have broken spiritual laws I know and am now willing to repent. I certainly would appreciate your going into my case personally and advising me just what I shall do to regain my health and enlighten me a little more on the spiritual side of life which no doubt would help my mental condition and I know would reflect on my physical body.
“Understand that I will mail you a check for whatever your charges might be. I am not a wealthy man but you certainly will be paid promptly as all other M.D.’s were paid without any results…”
R2. 6/10/29 EC’s letter: ”…We realize, Mr. [5554], that the work in which we are engaged is quite an educational work as well as one to administer to the physical man. I believe I can speak from personal experience along all your lines. My wife had the same trouble as you had and all the rest, too, has been my lot, and it has been only by the power of His might that I have been able to keep going and at least try to be of help to others. Only in helping others are we able to help ourselves.
“The lectures by Mr. Blumenthal are wonderful. You will be supplied with copies of these from time to time, as well as with the findings of the Association as the work progresses.
“You should be able to at least in part follow the suggestions made in the reading. If you can not go to Asheville just now, then carry out the rest of the suggestions and I am sure you will receive benefits. One gets what one asks for, believing, striving, seeking, and works for…”
R3. 6/11/29 Letter to Dr. Thomas B. House (Apparently after he had made a flying trip through Virginia Beach - perhaps on his way back from Florida?): ”…We arrived home after a very hot, tiresome trip but find it much cooler here and plenty of rain… I was afraid I would not make the trip but I got along fine. It is terrible to let things worry you.
“Doctor, do you think it would help me quicker if I should take some osteopathy treatments here and continue with you when at the hospital. I much prefer to feel better when I call upon you than I did the last time. I know I would enjoy it and get more out of it and I thought perhaps one or two treatments a week here until I leave may help me, but I do not want to do anything that would interfere with your work. The lower part of my back and right under my breast bone does bother me and worries me some and I thought a few treatments would help. If you think I should do that would you take that part of the reading or would you care to give me a letter or some instructions?
“I purchased some Wampole’s Cod Liver Oil. I see it has wild cherry and several other ingredients in it. I thought you wanted me to take the straight Cod Liver Oil. I am very anxious to get my liver, spleen and intestines fixed up as soon as possible as I sure have been miserable.
“I certainly do appreciate the work and I’m anxious and willing to do all I can to help it along.
“What do you think of light exercise morning and night and a shower bath? I have a vibrator similar to the one you have (Graybar) but I have been afraid to use it. Do you think it would hurt my liver, stomach or intestines to use it? I certainly do appreciate your kindness and interest taken and of course am very anxious for results.
“With kindest regards to Mrs. House and the entire staff, I am…”
R4. 6/21/29 Letter to EC: ”…I wish to thank you for your letter of June 10th. I had the pleasure of calling upon Mr. Thomas B. Brown yesterday. I am certainly grateful for the time given me and the enlightenment received. I certainly would like to talk to you in person as I feel like I have been lax in doing good and would surely like to do some good now if I just knew how to go about it.
“I have been following out instructions except the inhalant. I have the keg but have a hard time trying to purchase the apple brandy but I am still trying and hope to locate same.
“The pit of my stomach bothers me at times. Seems like I do not get strength from what I eat. I notice in the bowel movements long, hard strings and a lot of slimy mucus which worries me so much.
“I am trying to find a place in Asheville or Hendersonville North Carolina and would like to leave here on July 6th. I see I might have trouble in getting away from the office but I feel like my health comes first and with that I can find something else to do. I notice my reading was on May 2nd. Do you think I should have another reading now? I thought perhaps the changes, other changes have taken place in my body on account of the strings and mucus in my stool and another reading would be proper. I am enclosing application and ten dollars for a reading if you think it necessary and if not you use the ten dollars as you think best.
“I certainly wish I had the understanding and faith Mr. Brown has and you no doubt are wonderful and I sure would like to meet you and if I can get well I surely will visit you and certainly would like to make my life work helping humanity on this earth. Do you know of anything I could do? Are there any books I could read to give me a better understanding? Mr. Cayce, please do not think I am a pest. I don’t want to be. I am anxious to get well as I have a widowed mother 76 years old that I am helping to support and I do know she needs my help and my thoughts are of her.
“I would be pleased to hear from you promptly as I feel like I must do something now and after I hear from you will request a leave of absence from the Company…”
R5. 6/26/29 EC wrote making an appointment for his second reading and urging that he come by Virginia Beach and witness his reading on the way to Asheville.
