This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of September, 1929, in accordance with request made by Mr. [165].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5585]. Now, we find there are many conditions as disturb this body. These have to do not only with the effects of that as is given to ease or to bring comfort to the body in its detrimental effect, but also those specific conditions as have to do with the destruction of tissue in the body, and the effect this drain, or strain, produces in the physical functioning. These, then, are conditions as we find them with this body, [5585] we are speaking of:

2. IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, we find evidences of the character of the condition existent, in the character of the bacilli as is carried in the blood stream. Also we find the effect in the nerve system of those properties as are given as a hypnotic or anaesthesia for the nerve pressure, or nerve centers where pain and distress comes through the physical suffering of tissue being so involved as to waste or to destroy self in the system.

3. IN THE PHYSICAL ORGANS, here we find the strain on the whole general system, produced by the character of the blood as is carried through the system.

4. The organs of digestion function fairly normal, especially when we consider the distresses as are seen in the pelvic organs and the distresses as are produced there by the germ or bacilli as has set up the form of tissue that destroys self in the activity with the organ, the organs of the system. This, as we find, has become malignant. Had this been taken in time, these MIGHT have been corrected entirely - but, from lacerations as produced from the condition of the system, in the way of forming those of an over-acid, the lesions became those of first the sarcoma reaction, then of the [lesion] nature as produces destructive cell.

5. Now, we may aid, and we may assist, and with the proper RESPONSE (though this may not be seen until these are given, so as to change the vibratory rate of the system, especially as in relation to the blood supply and the effect as is produced in same) - and would this produce, then, the proper absorption without injuring other tissue (and the eliminations kept, and the conditions cleansed in such a manner as to prevent the spreading of those tissues as are destroyed) - we may bring many days, and much more COMFORT and ease to the body.

6. First we would give that, rather than so MUCH of the morphia to EASE the body - we would begin with the dosages of this, which will bring much more restful ease and comfort. While it will be necessary to gradually decrease the dosages of morphia, these will entirely take the place, will the body respond to the other properties as will be necessary. This should be prepared, preferably, in capsule - though a liquid. We would give this as the dose in each capsule:

Oil of Eucalyptol…1 minim, Canadian Balsam…1 minim, Oil of Turp, Rectified…1/2 minim, Heroin…1/80 grain.

Give only one of these in sixteen hours.

7. We would also give, every third day - but under the DIRECTION of a physician (and these had all best be given under the direction of a physician watching or tending the condition) - those of small doses of radium water. (Radium Water Company, Pittsburgh, Pa.)

8. The application of the ultra-violet ray will aid much more than those of any other ray, which would - or should be applied to the SIDES or back, rather than to the frontal portion of body, so that the effect of same is with the STRUCTURAL portion, as well as to tissue itself.

9. These, as we find, should bring the better results for this body, [5585].

10. Now, the ultra-violet should not be given oftener than every third day, and should not be closer in the beginning than thirty-eight inches from the body. If the ray of the Burdick lamp is used - that [is], the mercury quartz - that the better. [See approval in 165-19, Par. 8-A and 325-37.]

11. Again we would find, in THIS condition, were the carbon ASH given it would be more helpful even than the radium water. One is procurable at present, the other not. Use, then, in this instance, the radium water. Ready for questions.

12. (Q) What should be the dosage of the radium water? (A) That would be under the direction of the physician, and according to the manner or strength of the water itself. This is prepared in dosages of so many millimeters [millicuries?] for each dose, dependent upon the CONDITION - the pulsation, the reactions of the respiratory system, and the extent of the condition in the patient. Hence the physician should watch this closely. [6/12/73 Don Button’s note: Millicuries is the radiation measurement referred to here, named after Pierre & Madam Curie.]

13. (Q) Can best treatment be secured through Dr. B. R. Smith, [M.D.] of Asheville? (A) Very good. If he will apply these in the directions as given, he will find some results that will be even ASTONISHING to him.

14. (Q) Should the body go to Virginia Beach when able? (A) Not necessary, if these may be applied in this place - and better here than at the Beach.

15. (Q) Will complete recovery be possible? (A) Be possible - but this will be determined better by the reactions in the system, for remember we are dealing with LIFE FORCES within themselves, or that which lives upon human tissue - CANCER!

16. We are through for the present.

R2. 4/2/32 Mr. [437]‘s letter: “Can you tell me anything about radium water which I understand has been suggested in the past in the rdgs. and which is getting considerable space in the N.Y. papers on account of the passing of E. M. Byers.”

R3. 4/6/32 EC’s letter: “Regarding the radium water: During the years we have had possibly five or six cases where radium water has been suggested. In each case it has been under the supervision of a physician, even when it has suggested that type of radium water that has been marketed directly to the public. We have never had any trouble with it not giving the desired results where it was suggested, nor have we ever had any bad effects from it. Then, my opinion would be (and, of course, I am not asleep), that there ARE conditions where it may be very harmful and there are conditions where it may be most beneficial. We might make a crude comparison with the smallpox vaccine. We have had through the years a FEW cases where the information, as information, forbade a body being vaccinated, but there have been many hundreds where such has been advised. This is a generally accepted thing by the medical profession, yet there are some - of course - who call it barbarous and everything. That may be a poor comparison, but to my little mind it is a very good one, especially as we have had information for and against radium water and vaccine.”

“The cancerous condition in Mrs. [5585]‘s abdomen has reached a state where it seems inoperable, and she has been given up by the doctors, with two or three weeks to live. Questions: What should be done as a cure? Should body take narcotics to relieve pain? Can best treatment be secured through Dr. B. R. Smith of Asheville? Should body go to Va. Beach when able? Will complete recovery be possible?
