This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 30th day of January, 1927, in accordance with request made by Mr. [4906].

Time of Reading San Saba County, 2:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Texas.

1. GC: You will have before you the present location of the well being drilled on Rocky Pasture, in San Saba County, Texas, by [4906]. You will please tell us if the change in location will make any material difference in the outcome of the production from this well, and give us something about the difference in formations that might be expected.

2. EC: Yes, we have the operations here. We will find that the change in the location will make some difference in the angle in which various formations are encountered, until we reach the depth of thirteen hundred and eighty-three (1383) feet. Then we will find practically the same condition to the production as would have been encountered in the first location fifty (50) feet away, reaching the larger production in the twenty-six to twenty-six eighty-nine (26 to 2689), see? Here we should find exceedingly large production - the largest as will have been encountered in Texas, see? for this should reach that proportion of fifty to seventy-five thousand (50,000 to 75,000) barrels per day, see?

3. Handle the operations in that way and manner as has been outlined that these should be handled in this territory. Do that.

R1. 1/30/27 EC’s ltr. to [4906]:

My dear Mr. [4906],

It certainly did look like for a time that I wasn’t going to be able to get this reading before I got away, and as you will see we had to squeeze it in on Sunday to make it.

I’m sorry to know that you felt it was to your best interest to dispose of your holdings in Baird County, for I verily believe they will find another sand there that will prove more productive even than the one you have been getting production from - but that’s in the past and we’ll just forget it. You did what was the best thing under the circumstances, and there you are!

Too bad, too, that you had to commence a new hole. This is always discouraging, and as you say, at this particular time it’s very digging in a financial way. Yet it should have this effect also - it will certainly show those people, not only in the immediate locality, but in all parts of the country, that you believe in what you’re doing, and are going to carry it out - no matter what comes up. It would seem to indicate from the reading that so far as the production is concerned, you will not have any trouble in locating this - that is, the large production, and I am very much of the opinion that you’re going to get something that will pay, even, when you get to about twelve eight to twelve fifty-eight - to something like that, or maybe where you are you will strike it at eleven hundred and something. I know you’re going to have to strike that lime they call the Elenberger, but through this you will come into as pretty a formation as will be found anywhere in the world. I’m with you! And I certainly am in hopes that you don’t experience too much trouble in disposing of sufficient of the acreage to enable you to carry on the operations to the end, for I feel as sure as anything in the world that you’re going to get success when you strike that lower sand. You will be at what is the fountain head, almost, of all north Texas fields.

I can very well imagine what a time you have had making the location. I expect you almost had to turn the place into a quarry. I hope you don’t have flood season down there like they had one year when I was there - it came along about this time - but I guess it would fill your tank so you’d have no trouble with water for the rest of the year.

I think I’ll get off to Florida tomorrow or next day. I’d like to hear from you whenever you have an opportunity to write. I want to see what’s the prospect in Florida for a well [[5741] series?] on about four thousand acres that I have been holding a lease on now for the last seven years. I understand a well drilled on land adjoining this to about twenty-two hundred feet is making black sulphur water now - I mean the water itself black! with a little gas - streaks of oil now and then.

I certainly want to get to Texas to see you when you get some production there. I know it won’t be safe or good for me to come around until you do.

R2. 4/29/27 Riley Hurst’s letter: “Charlie Moore is here with me now. He said they had a good showing of oil in Rocky Pasture and they thought they were going to get it this time. I sure hope they do.”

R3. 5/18/27 Riley Hurst’s letter: “Grandma Moore seems to be in good health. She complains a little but I think that is a habit with old people. I saw Mr. [4906]. He is doing very well with the well in rocky. He is now about 1200 feet. The formations there are running about 200 feet shallower to the well we drilled [[3777] series?]. He is now in Dr. Udden’s Ellenburger. I told him it might be Elenburger but he sure better watch when he gets around 2500 feet deep because he might find something that would blow his tools out the hole. He said he was going down and see.”

R4. 10/3/27 Mr. [4906]‘s letter: “I know you think I have fallen in the well or had writer’s cramp or something else. But not so, old man. I have been hammering away at what I guess is the Ellenburger lime. I want to say it is the slowest drilling I ever saw. I have been wondering as to the condition of my hole. I am afraid it is going slanting, yet I am not sure. I am 1510 feet and hard is no word, yet no granite has shown up yet. We are 100 feet lower at the top than your old location, so that should make us as deep now as the well you drilled and, too, we are 112 feet higher on the structure which would be equivalent to 1610, the depth of old well plus 112, which is 1722. Now the people here and all who own interest think I am 1750, but to you our real depth is 1510 feet. I have run my depth a little ahead so as I can be 2750 before I am 2600; this is in order that I can get some of the landowners to come in on going deeper, that have laid out on me after promising me they would come in when I started. I don’t think that there is anything wrong in doing this, do you? I want you to take a reading as soon as you get this letter and find out if the hole is going straight and if I will be able to hang on till I finish it. It has cost so much up this depth that it makes me wonder where the rest of the money is coming from. I am not overestimating it when I say the operation up to this point has cost me 30,000 all told. I have lots of acreage left but it is hard to get anyone to purchase it. I have been wondering if you don't know some people who believe in your judgement that you could send me that would buy some acreage. I don't have to raise over 10,000 more to finish this well. I have reserved the 160 acres on which the well is being drilled and 4 diagonal offsets that I will never sell, that’s for you and me, but any other acreage I will sell to the public. I was over to see Mr. McConnell (Meridian). He is financially broke and could not help me any, yet he would like to. He said that Mr. Wyrick drilled a well over 5,000 feet that you had passed on. This, of course, made me wonder - said they got the sand exactly where you said, but there was nothing in it [[4905] series. Bosque County?]. The same thing happened in my well at Boll Hill in Okmulgee Co., Okla. [[4906] series]

“Now, Cayce, I am not discouraged, nor have I lost faith, for I have kept on drilling and that was months ago. I am telling you all the conditions that exist here that you may know what I am going through. I sold the last piece of acreage I could in the Oil Country 6 months ago. So what I have gotten along on since then I have raised here in San Saba, about $2,000 everyone has bought from me mostly. I have a very few I can sell yet. I sent my tool dresser to Findley, Ohio; he is going after his wife and young baby; he thinks he can sell some acreage there. I hope he can; if not, I will wire him to leave his family there, and I will let my family go back home, and he and I will go to the bunkhouse I have built against the rig and fight it out until it is 2600 feet. It is expensive to keep two families up and the well expenses too. So that’s what I plan on doing, if he does not sell any acreage. I don’t think you should send me anyone to buy an interest in the well or our offsets, for if you did I could never be responsible as to how that money would be spent. If I have the entire holdings under my control then I know what will be done with it, and believe me that’s the way I feel about this well, and if it is not carried out that way it will be the driest hole in Texas. But it would help me a lot if you would get some men to buy a lease (say in 40 acre tracts) around the well, any distance they want to. If you think you can get them I will make up map and send it to you.

“Now don’t fail, old man, to find out about that hole, if it is straight (first) and when we will go out of the Ellenburger lime at this location (depth); whether I will be able to dispose of enough acreage to finish my well or not; and when we will get rain to fill our water hole. We have just enough left to keep the hole bailed out, not enough to drill with.”
