EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5683] - this we have had before. [No copy of earlier rdg. See 5683-1, Par. B1.]
-
Now, as we find, many changes have taken place in the physical functionings of the body since last we had same here. Some are for the betterment of conditions. In some we find there are not so many changes, save the natural change incident to the continued functioning - or continued lack of proper coordination. These having been varied at different periods would, from the pathological standpoint, become changes, while from the psychic and the elemental standpoint are not much changed.
-
As we find, there are specific conditions that may aid in bringing about a more perfect coordination through the physical and mental forces of the body. As there has been seen, there are those hindrances in the system that make for repressions in their positive activity to impulses in the glands’ reaction to the system. These, as we find - as has been indicated, are produced by pressure that prevent their normal impulse of that received from the imaginative or the sensory system, or bother, that makes for those conditions that become - in their reaction - as incoordinate, from impulses of activity to the various portions, to the centers themselves that are to carry out impulse as received from the centers in the brain’s reaction itself. Hence, as we find, while brain forces, blood supply, the activities of the system in the physical sense are abnormal, the reaction FROM the impulse received for activity - in its action to the exterior, or the expression - is repressed. Hence we find those reactions wherein, while the activity of the mental forces is normal, or ABOVE normal, that which will excite same to its activity is subjugated to the extent that - unless these receive some UNUSUAL impulse, as from exterior forces, or receive from those activities something that gives an extraordinary amount of stimuli for the reaction - inertia is the reaction in the system, and the tendency becomes that of lethargy to impulse FOR reaction. The continuation of these, as we find, pathologically, comes from repressions that have existed by pressure on those impulses in the SYMPATHETIC, rather than the cerebro-spinal, though their reactions are often to the cerebro-spinal in the activity of a physical force - as well as, in a more latent manner, at periods the reaction is wholly from the sympathetic. So we have, from these conditions, the tendency at periods to be OVER active in the physical, that makes for ABNORMALCY in physical activity, physical reactions to portions of the system; and at others the opposite conditions, the physical becoming dormant, and the mental and impulsive becoming more prominent - or, that as may be ordinarily termed, the INVOLUNTARY becoming the VOLUNTARY reactions in the expressions of the imaginative or mental body.
-
These, in a pathological condition, as we find, are the repression in the 1st and 2nd cervical, or to a portion of the PHYSICAL activity of the glands in the base of the brain - or of that as makes for the activities through same.
-
Let’s understand, now, these are through the GLANDS - NOT the ducts that are for the spiritual, or the manifestations of same, though these are aroused to their activity in abnormal manner at times through their reaction in the pineal.
-
In the action in the physical CENTERS of the body, we find these come from the lower portion of the centers that make for activity in the assimilating system, in the genitive organism, in the impulses for locomotion below the diaphragm - or at the 11th and 10th dorsal center, from which the solar plexus lower ganglia serve their functioning to the organs of the system. Hence the reactions producing indolency in the MOVEMENTS of body, the desire to seek rather those of an over sympathetic reaction - or at times the tendency arises that makes for contention, as to become antagonistic to suggestions. If we understand what’s the relationship of those glands that make for these repressions in various portions of the system, and their activity to all the organism - especially of the sympathetic system, we find how - or why - these are at times antagonistic; why at other times the natural reaction would be seeking sympathy - and LIVING on same!
-
In meeting, then, the needs of these conditions in the first portion of applications, we will find there would be at least three DISTINCT variations in that as would make for a NORMALCY - but the normalcy may be brought about, if these are applied consistently, persistently; though there may be variations at times, when it would be hard to make the body react. Not by force, not wholly by sympathy - but rather as by physical and pathological REASONING with the body; for it has exceptional reasons and reasoning powers at such periods when the reactions are to the centralization of impulse in brain’s reaction.
-
First we would prepare as this: We would take Wild Ginseng 1 ounce, to 8 ounces of distilled water. We would reduce this body slow boiling to 6 ounces. Then, to this we would add (when this is strained, we would then add) as this:
Tincture of Stillingia…20 minims, Syrup of Rhubarb…20 minims, Tincture, or Essence, of Indian Turnip…2 minims, Alcohol…1 1/2 ounces.
The dose of this would be half teaspoonful 3 times each day.
-
Now, the pathological effect of this upon the system is to react through the assimilating system to both the eliminating and assimilating ducts and glands of the body. These (save the Stillingia) are for a stimuli to the active forces of the ducts of the body. The Stillingia is as a sedentary action for the glands of digestion, or the lacteals, WITH those that will make for a better coordination of the mucomembranes in the intestines, that will clarify poisons from the body. (That’s in the Syrup of Rhubarb, see?)
-
Then we would use the Radio-Active Appliance (plain). We would attach this in the afternoon when the body rests; preferably in the afternoon, than at night. The one anode (first attached) would be the 1st and 2nd cervical center, and the other anode (and attach the same way each time) to the 10th and 11th dorsal center - see? the plexus as becomes between these two. This treatment would be given each day from 20 to 30 minutes, with the body with the body lying down resting; and during the period make that affirmation to self, that: THERE WILL BE CREATED IN MY SYSTEM, THROUGH THE COORDINATION OF FUNCTIONINGS OF THOSE PORTIONS BEING AFFECTED BY THE LOW VIBRATIONS, THAT WHICH WILL MAKE COORDINATING OF THE WHOLE BODY.
-
Every other day, as the body rests in the evening - or when ready to retire, use the low electrical vibration, or the electrically driven vibrator, over the whole of the cerebro-spinal system, from the base of the brain to the end of the spine; and occasionally following the brachial center to the tips of fingers, and the locomotary center to the lower portion of the limbs.
-
As for diet - not too much sweets, nor too much of those that make for heaviness in the system; that is, prevent - as far as possible - foods becoming clogged in system; keeping the eliminations well through alimentary canal.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How may those desiring to assist this body best obtain the cooperation of the body in following this treatment? (A) This, as has been given, will require some persistence, some persuasive powers, in gentleness and in kindness, and with the REASONING of the body as respecting same. We will find that the body will have a tendency to adhere to these, then to leave them off - but be persistent in following these as given.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/27/32 EC wrote the brother [228] sending the reading and asking that he be informed of [5683]‘s reaction to the reading.
R2. 5/6/32 Brother [228]‘s letter said that he had shown the reading to [5683] and she seemed interested in it and willing to cooperate.
R3. 5/23/32 Brother [228]‘s letter inquired about specific location of parts of the spine referred to in [5683]‘s reading.
R4. 6/6/32 EC’s ltr. to [228]:
Mr. [228] …, Florida
Dear [228]:
Your note of the 23rd was received in due time. For the last two weeks we have been going through the ordeal of cleaning up a house and getting it ready to move into. We had to renovate, fumigate and scour it, besides giving it two coats of paint in every niche and corner. Owing to lack of finances we had to do the actual work ourselves. Hence the delay. Being somewhat “under the weather” myself, I had to leave most of the hard work to Hugh Lynn and the rest of our “office force”. We are at last IN! but, of course, a long way from being in smooth running order. However, we hope to “stay put” this time. If I can meet the payments, we will - after a few centuries - have some equity in the place.
Many thanks for your letter and the check enclosed. I’ll be anxious to know the results you get with Miss [5683].
The 1st and 2nd cervical are the axes of the head; that is, the 1st and 2nd vertebra. The 1st, of course, is deep in the base of the skull. The second is the first one that you feel, right back of the head.
The 10th and 11th dorsal are next to the last vertebra to which the rib is attached. The 12th is the last one. The 10th and 11th, then, would be the one just above that. I hope you can locate these alright. I regret very much the delay, but hope that in a little while we will have things running smoothly again.
Hoping to hear from you whenever you have the opportunity, and with kindest regards and love to you and yours, I am
Ever the same, Edgar Cayce EC:GD

R5. 10/13/32 Brother [228]‘s letter: ”…Now regarding to [5683]‘s case: She has not given us any cooperation in the treatment. For ten days she took the medicine then refused to take another dose making the excuse that it hurt her physically. She let us use the vibrator on her for one month and she used the Radio-Active Appliance for a couple of weeks in a half-hearted way. Since that time she has just refused the whole treatment and all of our persuasion has been of no avail. Without cooperation from her there is nothing that we can do for her. She is habitually antagonistic toward us and especially if we are trying to influence her to do something in which she is not interested. If we allow her to follow her own inclinations exclusively she remains in a very good humor but the least criticism or suggestion arouses her displease. Around company she does not reveal any peculiarities that are particularly noticeable except that she most always shows the lack of neatness and insists on chewing gum all the time regardless of where she may be. Due to these conditions I feel discouraged about continuing the treatment for her although I am positive that it will be greatly beneficial to her if she could be prevailed upon to use it consistently. Under the circumstances the Radio-Active Appliance is not doing us any good and if you think it could be re-sold to somebody else please let us know. Of course she knows how to nurse and seems like a different person when she has work of this kind to do. Recently she spent nineteen days with a couple of our friends who have a young baby and took care of the baby and mother after they left the hospital. She got along with them fairly well and they do not know that there is anything wrong with her as far as we know…”

B1. GD’s note: EC knew this family and told us that [5683] had been given a reading several years before because of a nervous breakdown. No copy of this reading can be found in A.R.E.
B2. 1/2/20 Newspaper Article:
THE BIRMINGHAM AGE
SIR CONAN DOYLE TO VISIT ALABAMA
English Author to Investigate Selma Trance Case. To Be Entertained Here
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Great Britain’s distinguished writer and author of detective stories, is said to be coming to Alabama to investigate the mysterious case of the young Selma woman whose illness was successfully diagnosed by a man in trance with the result that an immediate cure was effected. Sir Conan Doyle has recently gained additional renown as a student of spiritualism, and his revelations regarding the spirit world have set London agog with excitement during the past few months.
The eminent English author has devoted a large part of his time to delving into happenings similar to the case of the Selma girl in the hope of obtaining more foundation for his theories with reference to spiritualism. The London Times and other English dailies have from time to time recently carried many stories from him about the spirit world and his deductions in unusual and mysterious cases.
It seems that a short while back a young lady in Selma was desperately ill from a cause which physicians were not able to locate. A male friend of hers is said to have gone into a trance and diagnosed her case as an abscessed tooth. The girl accepted his advice and had the tooth pulled, following which she recovered entirely.
That such an insignificant incident would serve to bring Sir Conan Doyle to Alabama is doubted, but the fact remains that the rumor persists in literary circles that he will visit this country in the near future and come to Alabama to investigate this case.
That the rumor has gained credence here is evidenced by the fact that the Birmingham Writers’ club has announced that it will entertain Sir Conan Doyle at an elaborate luncheon on the occasion of his contemplated visit to Birmingham.
B3. 4/13/32 Brother [228]‘s Letter: ”…You will recall that some number of years ago you gave a reading on [5683] but I don’t think that very much action was taken in connection with it at the time. She is now staying in our home and will probably be here for some little time yet. It has occurred to me that it might be peaceful now for my wife and I to make a very sincere attempt to apply the required treatment. [5683] is apparently not in such a bad condition, but we do feel that there should be brought about a few changes. For instance she is too fat, weighing perhaps around 140 pounds, while 20 to 25 pounds less would be more becoming. She also is diffident about getting away from the house and mingling with our friends although when she does go she enjoys herself and takes an enthusiatic part in all activities and really appears to have no fears in brightness. One of the things that we notice is not energetic, likes too well to take it easy around the house, taking naps between meals and also eating between meals. But chewing gum seems to give her considerable pleasure, and while this isn’t a grave fault it isn’t so hot, so to speak, she is not quite as neat as we would like for her to be, and she has a way of having pains or aches when it suits her purpose, usually about the time that we would like to have her go out somewhere with us. Of course I realize the difficulty of getting any cooperation from [5683] herself in putting your suggestions across, but I believe that there is someway that we can gradually take some action, following the lines suggested by you, that will bring about noticeable improvements in her condition…”
