This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of January, 1935, in accordance with request made by the father - Mr. […], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis, L. B. and Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 4:00 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. L.I., N.Y. (Physical Suggestion) [No response first time; GC had to give the suggestion twice.]
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [735]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, while there is still the inability of locomotion or the coordinations between the impulses and those centers or ganglia that give the locomotion and reaction without the aid of assistance in the locomotion, there are improvements in the physical forces of this body. There is more stamina in the muscular forces. There is a more uniform circulation. There is the better response between sympathetic and the sensory system. And there is a clearing of poisons that have been indicated in portions of the body.
-
It would be well that we continue the use of the electrical formations or vibrations that were indicated for the body, both in the Radio-Active and the Wet Cell influences. We would be rather particular in keeping the Radio-Active anodes very clean or polished before they are attached to the body at each application; insuring, too, that there is the proper or a perfect connection. Well that the Wet Cell Battery vibrations be in order; these are very good, as we find (They are preparing same now); and should be kept as indicated for the body.
-
Twice or three times each month, not necessary oftener (if the massage is kept as indicated, and the exercises that have been indicated for the body), we would have an ALIGNMENT throughout the cerebrospinal system. This should be done very gently, but very specifically, that there be no tendency for an adhesion or lesion to form in any of the ganglia or areas along the cerebrospinal system. Some little congestion in the sacral and lumbar segments is indicated, more from the posture of the body than anything else. This is not abnormal, as indicated by saying there are congestions, but there should be the aligning by a naturopath, neuropath or the like, that there may be kept the normal flow throughout these.
-
In six to eight months we should see some very decided improvements in the movements; not only of the lower limbs but the stamina and the strengthening in the body so that it may be almost or entirely able to raise self in the arms and in the activities of the body.
-
Keep up all the rest of those things indicated.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there anything wrong with her teeth? (A) We do not find anything materially wrong with the teeth. As indicated from the change in diets outlined for the body, necessary that we keep more of the foods carrying silicon and calcium in the system.
-
(Q) Should she be taught by a teacher at home? (A) This may be begun later on, in the next fall - or as there is more activity. But, as we find, not necessary in the present; save it would be well for those ABOUT the body to use the educational factors that go for the developments of a body in its mental development (which is normal) - but not any more specific than that, as we find, would be necessary in the present.
-
(Q) Would you advise taking her to Miami for a change in March? (A) Such a trip would be very well for the body, provided there would be the precautions taken enroute. Of course, the natural effects from the changes - and from the ultra-violet in the sand and sea - would be WELL for the body. Hence, it would be very good.
-
(Q) About how long will it take for her to get around by herself? (A) As indicated, this depends upon the responses; but we should see in six to eight months very definite changes in these conditions, as indicated - and then after such changes begin, MORE precautions must be taken as to PREVENT the settling of ANY weakness, or weakness magnifying itself as to cause any abnormal condition to develop.
-
(Q) Should the general massage be continued every day? (A) As indicated, these were no to be changed. The only addition we are giving is that there be the alignment two or three times each month; not oftener.
-
We are through for the present. [GD’s note: On awaking from above rdg., EC said he could smell a strong odor as of medicine cooking on a stove.]
Copy to Father ” ” Dr. Virginia S. Brooks, 24 Fifth Ave., 5th Ave. & 9th St., New York City
(Dr. Brooks can make the alignments two or three times each month, as indicated; and also counsel with you as to changes from time to time. GD)

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/9/35 Mr. [257]‘s letter: ”…I saw [735] baby. Did you know that Dr. Brooks took a machine out there and put it on the baby, and said she was giving her own type of reading? She talks to it and asks questions [the machine] and where it does not agree with you she uses her own treatment. Mr. […] says he does not want hers [her readings] and insists they follow your suggestions and no one else. Write me fully on this subject. I did not know what she did, but my impression was that she would follow the readings. She uses wires and a finder battery. I cannot see it. Either she does what your reading says or nothing doing. She read your reading and then said she had not but she began to feel around and I noticed that her findings were the same as yours. I would rather get Dobbins [Frank P. Dobbins, D.O.] or get this new find Dr. Levy [Esther M. Levy, D.O.] who went to school at Bethel. She says she will follow 100% and she is a graduate of Easton and was cured by Osteopathy some years ago. She has a big practice and money means nothing to her. She will aid anywhere to be of assistance and get into our work. What do you know of Dr. Brooks’ background?…”
R2. 1/14/35 EC’s ltr. to Dr. Brooks:
I suppose it appears that I scarcely appreciated your taking the time and going to the expense of calling me the other evening on the phone about the cases that you had seen in … [L.I.], but I do appreciate it a very great deal. You no doubt have a copy of both of the readings and are able not only to give your opinion on them but no doubt have analyzed them and know within yourself, at least, your idea of just how helpful these may be in the experience of the individuals so vitally interested.
I had a letter from Mr. […] [[735]‘s father], saying that you had suggested we have the reading at a certain time and, although it necessitated our changing some appointments around, we did this, hoping to establish the sympathetic contact that we believe is so necessary in a work of this kind especially, but in fact in any work that is worth while or of a spiritual nature.
I know you are very busy and your time is well taken up with your own work and efforts, but I do hope that you will be patient enough with us and helpful enough to these good people to follow this rather closely. I hope it will be possible that it will not necessitate any great division of opinions, but should you find that the information or the suggestions that were given (which, of course, are a little bit out of the ordinary, possibly) are more in line with some of your research work in the etheronic energies (though these are carried from a little bit different angle) if you find by close observation that it isn’t doing just what it should, or that your opinions digress, please tell us before you discourage them in their efforts at this time, if it is in line with your own policies.
I had a letter, too, from Mrs. […] [[728]‘s mother], telling me you had seen her little girl and made some suggestions that they wrote me about. This is very fine, if you will be so kind as to write us from week to week or twice a month, or such a matter, what you find in these particular cases, or any others that you may observe. These will become, of course, quite valuable to us in the reports that we make, not only to our members, but to many of the organizations that are being contacted and who are observing the phenomena at this time.
I wish I had had the opportunity to have talked with you again at some length about some of the things that were suggested in our few minutes’ conversation that we had when I was there last, but I am in hopes that next time, if you still feel an interest, we may be able to work together in quite a satisfactory way and manner.
R3. 1/14/35 Father’s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Received your very wonderful reading and wish to say at this time, that it is very consoling to know that you can do so much for our little daughter [735]. Mrs. […] and myself have all the confidence in the world in your advise and instructions. We intend to carry these readings out to the very word as otherwise the readings would be unnecessary.
Now please do not misunderstand me, Mr. Cayce, when I tell you that Dr. Virginia Brooks did not treat my daughter strictly in accordance with your first reading. Dr. Brooks is a wonderful person and being recommended by so wonderful a gentleman as Mr. [257], I cannot say a word against her personally, but at the very first treatment, this right prior to the second reading, Dr. Brooks attached an entirely different instrument on the body of my little [735]. Let me explain how this instrument made me skeptical, it resembled my radio set having positive and negative anodes and a ground protruding therefrom. The anodes were attached on the child’s body, positive to the spleen, as I understood, and the negative anode to the cerebrospinal area somewhere around the lumbar section, the ground wire was attached to the house radiator. This in my estimation seemed logical, but when it came to the diet as laid out by you, Dr. Brooks eliminated some of the foods therein. This was done after the doctor consulted the instrument, which instrument then having been detached from the child’s body. Can this be practical? My thoughts were of your words in the first reading, which stated that the instructions will be strictly complied with, and I telephoned Dr. Brooks about these instructions and explained that it be best for her not to treat [735] until such time that I write you and get the name if possible, of the doctor who would treat the child as recommended.
Have had a few talks with Mr. [257] over the telephone and he has advised me and explained everything possible in such a way as to make me understand that the treatment must be strictly in accordance with the reading or not at all. Mr. [257] is willing to refer me to Dr. Dobbins or Dr. Reilly, who made the batteries, but I would sooner await your decision which to me and mine is final.
Please do not misunderstand me as I want only to do what is going to be right and am not condemning anyone.
Will close with the best of wishes to you, Mr. Cayce, and yours and your co-workers from me and mine. Thank you again for your good work and kindness, I remain […]
R4. 1/16/35 EC’s ltr. to [735]‘s father:
I have yours of the 14th, and note with much interest what you have to say. First we want to thank you for your contribution to the Work which was enclosed.
There seems to be something rather peculiar about the circumstances and conditions that have arisen. I don’t know whether to try to explain this all by letter or merely to say I think your attitude is correct, that you should follow the directions given in the reading irrespective. Of course, it might be quite plausible and possible for you to have Dr. Robertson give these treatments, as he is there very close to you. I haven’t heard from Dr. Robertson, however, since [632]‘s death. I don’t know just what his attitude is at present in regard to our work.
By the way, Mr. and Mrs. [[632]‘s parents] came by to see us the other day on their return trip from Florida.
I’m sure Dr. Brooks is a very efficient person, but so often we find individuals in the profession who are so desirous of promoting their own particular interests that they do not see the importance of cooperating fully with our suggestions, that it is absolutely necessary to do ALL that is suggested and add nothing, or else leave it alone entirely. At the same time it is necessary that we have the cooperation, usually, of one or more of the profession on each case. I’ve known Dr. Dobbins for about two years, and he has gotten wonderful results by cooperating with us in following the readings.
Before I even received your letter I had written to Dr. Brooks, feeling that just such as you tell me had happened. I asked her to not interfere or suggest any other type of treatment than that indicated in the reading, without first taking it up with us or the individuals concerned indicating they would like a change. I hope we don’t get a misunderstanding of any kind about this. As you know, I am very glad to have the sympathetic cooperation of any individual, for I do not give any treatments myself - and we are dependent upon others to carry out instructions. In this particular case it seems there is little need of having any outside cooperation except one who will do the adjustments or manipulations two or three times a month as suggested. So, we are enclosing a letter to an osteopath with the directions for [735]‘s treatments; and the others can be continued at home by yourself and Mrs. […]. Should you go to Dr. Robertson or to Dr. Dobbins, this letter can be presented.
R5. 1/16/35 GD’s letter:
To an OSTEOPATH, NATUROPATH OR NEUROPATH in …, L.I., or New York City
Dear Sir:-
For little [735], daughter of Mr. and Mrs. […], … St., …, L.I., N.Y., we have recommended treatments as follows:
“Twice or three times each month, not necessary oftener (if the massage is kept as indicated, and the exercises that have been indicated for the body), we would have an ALIGNMENT throughout the cerebrospinal system. This should be done very gently, but very specifically, that there be no tendency for an adhesion or lesion to form in any of the ganglia or areas along the cerebrospinal system. Some little congestion in the sacral and lumbar segments is indicated, more from the posture of the body than anything else. This is not abnormal, as indicated by saying there are congestions, but there should be the aligning by a naturopath, neuropath or the like, that there may be kept the normal flow throughout these.”
Sincerely, Gladys Davis Secretary to Edgar Cayce of the ASS’N FOR RESEARCH & ENLIGHTENMENT, INC.
P.S. We would refer you to one of the following:
Dr. Frank Dobbins, 551 Fifth Ave., New York City Dr. Lawrence Robertson, Forest Arms Apts., Ascan Ave. & Burns St., Forest Hills, L.I., N.Y.
Dr. Virginia Brooks, 5th Ave. Hotel, 5th Ave. at 9th, Apt. 1418, N.Y.C.
R6. 1/16/35 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [257]:
The [735] case is a most interesting one. Of course, often we find individuals who have to be shown or checked up regarding applying other things than that suggested in the readings. It can’t be anyting else but confusing to a family for a doctor to act in that manner, and if the doctor has sufficient strength of personality he or she can often override the patient’s faith in sticking strictly to the reading suggestions. I feel sure Dr. Brooks is very SINCERE, but she hasn’t had enough experience with the Work to realize the importance of doing JUST what is given - no more, no less. But I’ve written her what I feel is the best thing for her to do if she wants to investigate and check up on these cases for us.
R7. 2/13/35 Father submitted questions for Ck. Physical, saying:
“There seems to be a deformity in the child’s right foot. How can this be corrected? Do you advise giving her walking exercises as have been given? We find she gets very tired after the first walking exercise. Dr. Dobbins gave us slightly different points on the body to place the anodes of the Wet Cell Appliance, as to the 9th dorsal plexus and the 4th lumbar plexus. Which is correct, that which we have been placing the anodes on, or the points Dr. Dobbins has suggested? Is Dr. Dobbins treating [735] in accordance with the reading?”
