This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of January, 1935, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [799], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [317].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have not had before. As we find, the conditions are rather serious; yet there may be a great deal of relief brought to this body without the administration of narcotics or hypnotics. But we find there are pressures that have been a contributory cause to a very much rundown and depleted condition, with the lack of the elements in the blood stream and in the functioning of the glands that secrete for the activity; so there has been produced a thinning of the walls of the blood streams themselves. Also there are the poisons that have been accumulating from the effects of constipation, a very much disturbed gall duct and the general depleting; so that there are nodules - sometimes taking on very much the form of sarcoma nodules, yet these are not AS YET true sarcoma; they are rather the inflammation of the lining of the ducts, the veins, the arteries themselves. Hence the pressure, as we find, arises from the 3rd and 4th dorsal centers - yes, the 4th, 3rd and 2nd dorsal centers, the 5th, 4th and 3rd cervical centers. And the pressure may be relieved by adjustments, which - we would have preferably given in the osteopathic manner.

2. Now, such treatments will not KEEP down the condition, for the tendency has been for the system to react in an abnormal manner - from the general accumulations. So, they will be simply palliative measures for a while, and there will be required a CONTINUED treatment for a period of time, and that there be a general CLEANSING of the system - which will require a much longer period of activity.

3. We would begin to use the high colonic irrigations to cleanse the colon. In the first three weeks we would have about two each week. Don’t undertake to cleanse the caecum in the first two or three or four irrigations; only first the descending and first portion of the transverse, in the first, second and third irrigation, and then we would be able to cleanse the transverse area and then finally the caecum and ascending area.

4. We would be very mindful of the diet; and while it should not be too rich, it should be particularly nourishing. So we find that beef juices, the dried milks - as Dryco, or as even Mellins’ Food for this body would be particularly well; for it, of all such properties, may be so altered by the addition of water - rather than boiled or heated milk - in such ways and manner as to CONTROL the activity of the liver and its tributary reactions to the whole of the hepatic circulation.

5. When the body is being treated by the osteopath (and we would prefer Dobbins in these particular conditions), we will find quite a tender area in the gall duct area. While most of the condition is in the head and neck, from the cutting off of the circulation to these portions of the body, these centers indicated should be stimulated; and after a bit - when there has been two or three or four of the colonic irrigations - there should be the emptying of the gall duct osteopathically, which will be most helpful.

6. For those places where there are BROKEN places in the head and neck and portions of the body, we would use a combination of Iodex and Animated Ash. To one ounce of the Iodex thoroughly mix ten grains of the Animated Ash. Use this as an ointment, gently massaging around the nobules, around those places and around the activities that cause so much distress.

7. The relief of the pressure in the cervical area, particularly, should relieve the conditions for the eyes. While these are localized, it will be necessary that there be used a mild antiseptic; preferably as would be given by the physician who would make the manipulations - that would cleanse these.

8. And we will find these will be helpful, at least. If these conditions are helped, or when they are helped, in three to four weeks we would give further instructions or changes; for, as indicated, we will have very good days and we will have some mighty bad ones.

9. Ready for questions.

10. (Q) Did the two injections supposedly of calcium cause any change in my blood and body? (A) Not so well for the body.

11. (Q) Is there any trouble in abdomen? (A) Good deal of trouble! That’s what we are trying to get rid of, through these conditions as indicated. These pressures from the organs of the pelvis, we find, are rather from the pressures in the colon. These removed, and with the blood stream aided in being revivified, should remove a great deal of this. These will depend, of course, upon the reactions of the body.

Be rather consistent and persistent with this. Have two or three treatments or adjustments osteopathically each week for the first two or three weeks, and then they may be had a little less often - but by that time we should make further suggestions as to the responses.

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

I have received reading for which please accept my deep appreciation.

It is my intention to follow your instructions to the letter, but first wish to call your attention to after effects of Colonic Irrigation taken on Saturday. My abdomen has been very distended, almost acute pain at times in my right side, a little pain in the left, and soreness throughout my entire abdomen. It is particularly disagreeable after eating or there is much rumbling and general distress. During the night, both Saturday and Sunday, I had feeling of nausea. Today my abdomen is so sore I can hardly touch it, and there is discomfort even in turning from side to side at night.

I have eaten very little due to this condition. There is also feeling of discomfort just inside the rectum.

The irrigation was a mixture of Bicarbonate and six gallons of water - I had a slight chill following.

I might mention I had peritonitis six years ago following a miscarriage, and suffered greatly for years afterwards, with pain and tenderness in my abdomen, but this had cleared up in the past year, with the exception of slight soreness in my right side.

After the irrigation I am in somewhat the same boat as before or it seems to have stirred up all this old soreness and pain. What should I do to relieve this soreness and pain at this time and should I continue with these irrigations?

Before proceeding further, I shall await your advice.

I will see Dr. Dobbins to-day if possible, but due to soreness and pain in my abdomen each step is a pain.

My dear Mrs. [799]:

Yours of the 28th has just been received, and I notice what you have to say about the effect of the enema. I’m wondering if you had this done by The Reilly Service people, or attempted to do it yourself. It would appear from what you say that you really need this portion of the treatment very badly, and it is true the first may have stirred you up a bit; but I’m very sure if the enemas are used in the proper way - as suggested - there will be a great deal of relief. This condition would be helped also, of course, by the osteopathic manipulations as suggested. If you have not been able to go to Dr. Dobbins, I’m sure you could make arrangements for him to call on you after office hours, on his way home; for I’m sure this would be most advisable. I would insist that you get in touch with The Reilly Service, if they administered the enema for you, or if they didn’t I would suggest that you let them make the investigation and see; for of course such done improperly will cause a great deal more discomfort than they would give relief, while if given properly there is nothing that could bring much more relief.

I appreciate your letting me hear from you, and I do hope you will soon be feeling a great deal better.

R5. 3/11/35 Mrs. [799]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Thanks so much for your letter of a few days ago. Mr. […] had intended writing you but just neglected doing so.

I’m very sorry he has been unable thus far to take care of the amount due on the reading, but frankly he has been under such a heavy load, he hasn’t had enough left over for small necessities. Living expenses here, as you probably know, are not in keeping with salaries. You may rest assured that this will be taken care of as Mr. […] is expecting to make a loan in the next week or two, so that he may have some funds available.

Mr. Cayce I have been so very very ill I am almost desperate and do not know which way to turn. I tried following your suggestion and had my first irrigation at Reilly’s. As explained to you in a previous letter, I was in so much distress following this, I was unable to eat sleep as any movement was painful, my abdomen was so exquisitely tender. This did not clear up to any extent for about two weeks and then it was somewhat relieved. As per your letter I decided to try another irrigation which I did, going to a woman here that is A #1 in that work, doing a great deal of this for physicians. The same reaction followed and having taken the third one on March 4th, I am now unable to eat properly and I am straining my vegetables and eating lightly and my abdomen is quite sore and painful when I walk. I think I explained to you I was in bed for eight months six years ago running, a temperature of 103 and 104 for quite awhile and no one seemed to be able to offer a diagnosis, altho some said peritonitis. This acute condition became chronic and had about cleared up in the past six years with the exception of soreness in my right side. I was on a strained diet for several months which helped a great deal, and it seems these irrigations have stirred up all that old trouble. In regard to the condition in my head. This has persisted for 6 1/2 months. I will outline below how this came on.

Upon my arrival in N. Y. seven months ago I consulted a physician in regard to soreness in my right side. My general health was excellent. I slept will, had a splendid appetite and my skin was clear white and pink. He suggested I go into the Ward of one of the Hospitals here for X-Rays of my Colon, etc. This I did on the 9th of August. My Dr. then went away on his vacation on the 15th, leaving me in the Ward to be dismissed as soon as X-Rays were completed, and to be referred back to him on his return. On the 16th a new Dr. came into the Ward and suggested MAYBE I had one of those Colons that lacked calcium and ordered intravenous injections of calcium. This without testing my blood to see if I needed this. I received the first Injection on Friday Aug. 17th at 4:30. Had no reaction at all only a feeling of warmth while the fluid was being injected. The next day at 10:30 the Dr. came by my bed and asked how I felt. I told them I felt FINE. At 11 o’clock, I received another Injection. I had no feeling of warmth at this time, only a feeling of dizziness. I told the Intern this and he said it would pass off. Instead it grew worse and 2 or 3 hours later, I felt as if I was running a high temperature, feeling of heat from my shoulders up. This continued and it seemed as if my head was burning in spots, for several days at which time my head perspired profusely, hair and pillow being wringing wet. The feeling of heat was broken after this. I was unable to focus and my eyes terribly dilated. Had pain in my legs and thighs constantly for 3 days and nights - pain in ears eyes, nose and bony structure of my face and for awhile was hardly able to chew on my right side. There is a feeling of pressure or rigidity from the crown of my head down thru my nose which is HORRIBLE at times. My eyelids are swollen at times and were terribly swollen immediately after the Injection. My eyes now are dilated, and the left one seems to sink back further into my head and appears smaller than the right. My skin is pasty and face seems to be swollen on the left side and the cartilage seems to be enlarged on that side of the jaw. There seems to be a lump of cartilage, formed on the end of my nose altho it is not noticeable to anyone unless they have known me for quite awhile, but this pressure seems to be thru this lump. My ears were so sore for months I could hardly touch them and are still sensitive. I have begun to have pain thru my fingers big toes arms and knees, etc., for the last two months and as stated before, lumps have formed which are painful. There is pain for about a week before they come and once they come, they remain. My nails are ridged where as they were perfectly smooth. I did not have a cavity in my teeth before I received this Inj. Now they have started decaying and I have sharp pains thru my teeth and occasionally thru my fingernails.

My menstruation was normal before this. Now it is all wrong. Six days after the Inj. I menstruated on time but it was very profuse and cutting pains thru the abdomen with VIOLENT headache. Second menstruation nine days late lasting only one day, reappearing later in a stain, then followed by a purulent discharge lasting about ten days. This has cleared up. One menstruation will be on time and maybe the next late, but it is not normal as it was before and my head is in terrible shape each time. About 2 or 3 weeks after this Inj. I had a drainage in my nose of an acid like nature irritating all up under my eyes. This only lasted one day, but my nose has been dry and red since I have an egg like discharge which clogs up my nose at times and then clears up. This for six months and I sneeze all the time. This all followed the Injection. I had NEVER had even headaches and had not had a head cold in ten years. Following this my head seemed to be drawing to one side and it was difficult to hold my head straight. I also felt like it was rigid in the back and felt as if I could not get my head down on the pillow. Medicine seems to make me worse as Doctors do not seem to know what to do and I am almost desperate. I don’t know what to do. I have inherited a wonderfully healthy body and can usually recuperate from anything, but this has almost killed me. As stated before I remained in bed 8 months with high temperature part of the time, but it didn’t seem to affect my general health or appearance. Now I can’t seem to make any progress at all. I think I would have given up trying had it not been for my little son who is in school at Mr. [317]‘s place. I must make every effort to regain my health for this child’s sake, but it is so discouraging. I had fought for six years to overcome the trouble I had six years ago, and just when my health was better than it had ever been and I felt better than I had in years, I had to be given something to bring on all this trouble.

I have been told that perhaps a mistake was made in giving me this medication and it does seem so.

My calcium content of the blood taken after this Injection was higher than normal, and taken again three months was STILL higher than normal, then it dropped in January to below normal. I know a lump has formed on the end of my nose and seems to be growing. It seems to be cartilage. I also have creepy sensations over my body as if pins were being thrust in my skin. My hands and arms become numb.

I did not intend to write such a lengthy letter, but I have tried to explain to explain to you just how my trouble came about. In regard to osteopathic treatments, I had a masseuse come in sometime before writing you and she had started massaging my arm upward. I became very pale and nearly fainted and she said she wouldn’t dare massage me. The lumps on my arm were very painful afterwards and I was unable to sleep. Even a little rubbing on my head causes the condition to be worse in my head, such as getting a shampoo, and sitting under a HOT dryer nearly kills me. Riding on street car, auto, reading, going to movie or any exercise causes my head to become worse. It seems that anything that is slightly stimulating makes it worse.

I just don’t believe I can continue to stand so much distress, but I just don’t know what to do as stated above. I do need help desperately, and if I could only get well, I can command a good salary, as I do stenographic and secretarial work, and would be able to help my husband, but in this condition, I can do nothing. My child needs me. He is always writing “Mother when are you going to get well so you can come to see me, or so I can come to see you.”

It has taken me quite awhile to write this letter as I have had to stop and then resume writing.

I wish you ever success in your work, as I am sure if you can help people regain their health, you deserve their everlasting gratitude. I don’t ask for anything else, only my health.

The pain I have in addition to the rigidity is spasmodic and of a deep boring nature. My muscles also twitch all over my body.

R6. 3/16/35 Mrs. [255]‘s letter: “Last Mon. I had a strong urge to write to Mrs. [799]. Somehow I could not do it before. We met at her house. It seems she had just written you at the moment when I had the feeling to write her. Well, I found she had taken 3 colonics without obeying instructions for osteopath, so I had a clear case. I hope she goes to Dr. Dobbins. Then if she disciplines her thought she will work from 2 planes.”
