GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions he has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [849].
-
As we find, conditions continue to improve slowly but surely.
-
There needs be those precautions in keeping up the rubs and massage, especially through the locomotory centers and areas to the lower portion of the cerebrospinal system; also the sciatic nerves and muscles; that the conditions do not become static - and for the strengthening of the limbs.
-
Thus the body may be enabled to gradually risk or trust self to crutches or canes. For such a strengthening of the limbs it would be well that there be arranged a manner whereby several times day, or whenever there is the inclination, the body may pull self (by pulling or rope) to almost - or gradually to a fully erect position. This would be gradually, to be sure; though there may be the strengthening gradually, with the rest of the applications, of the muscular forces and tendons so as to bear the greater portion of the weight of the body.
-
The rest we would keep very much in the manner as has been indicated for same.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is that just described in answer to the question as to the best method of procedure in attempting to use crutches? (A) That’s the manner in which there may be the greater ability for strength, for it will give - of course - the greater strain in the upper part of the body, but these attempts to pull up will, of course gradually, strengthen the muscles and ligaments of the areas about the upper portion of the sciatic centers, and the limbs.
-
(Q) Should anything be done to stop the muscular spasms that result from exercise, especially those in the right leg? (A) It is well, after the attempt of exercise, to rub the muscles well with grain alcohol or whiskey.
-
(Q) Should anything other than Tim be used to counteract the itch in the rectal area? [Seems to get better after a colonic irrigation.] (A) Paso’s lozenges may be used in combination with Tim, if so desired; as these will tend to stay longer than the Tim in the area.
-
(Q) Could something be taken to quiet the nerves during times of stress and strain? (A) Such may be taken, but these should be kept just as far away from as practical or possible. For any sedative that may be taken would gradually grow as a need for the body, see?
When the need becomes too great, then Silosan may be taken; but this should be mighty far apart, and just as little as is possible.
-
(Q) Is there any danger in the tendency of the right arm to remain sore and bent at the elbow? (A) This again is an indication of the need for the rubs. Of course, this will be another usage by the pulling of the body. At first it will be only a pulling without other than just gradually sufficient to pull the body up, see, and not sufficient to pull it erect. And this will tend to strengthen. Well that THIS area BE rubbed with either the alcohol or with any of the liniments that tend to strengthen or to heal sore muscular forces.
-
(Q) Should anything be done to help the cartilage that slips out of place in the right knee? (A) Yes - this should be massaged, too, but preferably massage this with salt and pure apple vinegar - a saturated solution. Gently massaging this, it will absorb sufficient so that in a little while this will remain without any slipping.
-
(Q) Any further advice for this body? (A) Keep that mental attitude of constructive forces and influences, and make for the use of the mental and spiritual attitudes for better constructive material atmosphere and expression.

We are through with this Reading for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/21/39 Wire signed [849] and [1102]: “Thanks for your readings - will follow them - best regards.”
R2. 4/11/39 [849]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Eddie:
This letter has long been overdue, yet the experiment which we have been conducting has been so interesting to us that it seems only a few days ago that I last wrote to you. This experiment has been very painful for me and I have had to dispense with all letter writing and all labor but a little work on my book now and them.
This sounds mysterious but it is just the result of a masseuse who has been working on me everyday for the past five weeks in accordance with the suggestions in the readings for eliminating the poisons and accretions by way of the blood supply. Everyday I thought I would write and tell you about my progress, but everyday I thought the next day might show more improvement and so I put it off.
When I got the last Check Reading I had reached a point where there was little that I could without expert massage to loosen the adhesions and lengthen the cords of my legs. I had the trapeze rings put up as the readings suggested, and them [1102] seeking to carry out her own reading, happened upon a woman whose technique of massage pleased her. She told the woman about me and that night I had the distinct pleasure of feeling a pair of thumbs sink into my rigid back muscles in a way that said to me, “I have arrived at last.”
The lady’s name is Mrs. [Lizzie G.] Townsend [Mrs. Pierce Townsend] and she is somewhat of a psychic herself, in that she sees people’s auras. Her massage technique is the important thing, however, and I can say as a man of much experience that I have never encountered a masseuse who so beautifully combined, the qualities of strength, gentleness, and anatomical knowledge. She proceeds slowly but surely, never forcing, never breaking, but always moving the whole body forward in strength and agility. She has been coming everyday, and while my progress has been splendid, it has also served to point out once again how badly off I was and how very far from recovery I am still.
Without the help of this woman my dream of going to Virginia Beach on May 15 would have been an empty pipe dream. I would have been sitting here in the same old way, because nothing was being done about the enormous task of clearing away the deposits on my knees and straightening out my legs. The readings, of course, had suggested that massage treatment all along, but we had tried one woman without success and were limping along with inexpert rubbing by ourselves.
Now it looks as if I will be on my crutches at least by May 15, but the wisdom of leaving the hands of this heaven-sent women is highly debatable. I personally think I ought to stay with her until I am quite well, but I would like to have the opinion of the readings, on this point and will be ready to follow whatever path is indicated. I have told Mrs. Townsend about you and she is anxious to have a Check Reading to see whether she is doing just the things she ought. She will gladly do just as the readings suggest, and in this matter I am sure I have found a jewel for the work. She would go to Virginia Beach in a minute if she thought she could make a living there. Personally I think she is a born healer and her story and success with difficult cases bears me out.
She whips me down everyday though, and while I have been getting stronger and heavier under the magic of her fingers I have been tired out by it and have suffered a great deal of pain as the poisons cleared themselves through the right knee. That is why I have been so negligent in communicating with you. I should have at least sent you the review of the little book, [A Search for God, 1st six chapters] but I never got quite past the first sentence of what I wanted to say.
I think I have hit the first jackpot on the turn that my luck must inevitably take. I am anxious to have the verdict as to the gains that have been made under Mrs. Townsend, and get a program for her to follow.
As soon as you can squeeze me in I would like to get a reading with the following questions:
Is the massage as being given by Mrs. Townsend the best for the body at this time, and if not what changes in the treatment should be made?
Should the body remain in Clearwater under the supervision of Mrs. Townsend until there is complete recovery?
If so, would it be best for the body to remain on the island, or go to the mainland?
Except for massage what program of exercise should the body follow at this stage?
Should the use to the appliance be continued?
We haven’t heard from Hugh Lynn in a long time, but yesterday we finally received a letter from [903] in which she told us briefly of his new enterprise. It is all news to us, but we hope it is going to be good news for you folks.
I am enclosing a review SFG I] which I hope will not arrive too late and I am returning the manuscript under separate cover. I hope to do better in my correspondence from now on, unless Mrs. Townsend keeps knocking me down.
[1521] has been fine and [1102] seems pretty well. We shipped off one of your Sunday School students a while back
- Mrs. […] - I hope she has got around to getting a reading for her little girl [1867] because I am sure you could help her.
With love to all of you, and what in the world is the [1000] FUR CLEANER?
Love, [849]
