This psychic reading Given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 28th day of September, 1935, in accordance with request made by the cousin - Mr. [1005] and Uncle [419], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 10:25 to 10:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ky. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [852].
-
As we find, conditions are changed from that as we have had here before. There is a great improvement in many ways, yet we find that it will require precautions and patience in making for these conditions where the resuscitating forces are made to perform in a normal way and manner.
-
In the present we find these conditions exist:
-
There are still some signs of the inflammation (although somewhat in abeyance) throughout the intestinal tract, as well as in the lower end of the stomach itself now.
-
We find that the inflammation or the condition causing some distress at times through the chest area is not of the chest; it is more of the lower portion of the esophagus and the upper portion of the plexus of the secondary cardiac area. This makes for that heaviness, and an acute pain at times in the area of the heart. It is a nervous condition and a reaction, but not an organic disturbance.
-
The weakness naturally arises from the suffering, as well as the strain produced by same upon the nervous system.
-
We would, then, in the present, leave off ALL treatments as heretofore indicated and follow along THESE lines in keeping with the conditions (including a portion of what has already been indicated):
-
First we would begin with the rubs over the chest and especially over the lower portion of the ribs, over the heart area and at the end of the sternum or at the cardiac area - the end of the breastbone here, you see, between the ribs or at the end of the ribs, over the stomach area. Such rubs would be with equal parts of Mutton Tallow, Spirits of Turpentine, Spirits of Camphor and Compound Tincture of Benzoin; massaged in the FRONTAL portion of the body, you see.
-
Then, after this has been applied, apply the violet ray over the area from the 5th dorsal to the base of the brain. Not too long, a period of a minute to a minute and a half.
-
This will at first cause some little disturbance with the stomach, or a feeling of nausea again; but this will gradually pass off and will be materially aided through these applications in six to eight hours after they have been begun.
-
About once each day, preferably in the evening, apply the Grape Poultice still; OVER the liver, the upper portion of the stomach - let it extend up to the lower portion of where the rubs are made and over those areas on both the liver area side and the descending colon side, to the lower portion of the abdomen.
-
We would leave off the Alcaroid, unless there begins again to be the emit or vomiting from foods.
-
The enemas we would have about every other day, using in these now the Soda and Salt; not so great a quantity of same. Let the enemas be rather for the cleansing and the preventing of the accumulations or the setting up again of inflammation through the intestinal tract.
-
We would begin with a very small quantity often of the Beef Juice; this not seasoned too much, but a very small quantity or sip of same. This may be given every hour, or until there is a satisfying.
-
We would continue at times to give the orange juice with the FRESH grape juice. This will be nourishing.
-
Red wine with brown or black bread, soaked in same, would be well - or “dunked”, as some would call it. Very little. The sipping or sucking of same, swallowing - though - a portion of the bread. This about once each day.
-
We would continue with the alcohol rubs, especially over the lower portion of the spinal column but extending on higher along the back, to about the 6th and 7th dorsal, or just below where the application of the violet ray is given after the rubs over the chest.
-
Mind that there is no chance of cold or congestion in any portions of the system.
-
The rubbing of the limbs with the alcohol would be well, though we find this would be better following an Olive Oil rub - over the limbs and especially the feet, close in the groin, following along the sciatic nerve.
-
About once a day or once in every other day should be sufficient for the osteopathic manipulations. And these should be of a general nature, coordinating more the locomotory plexus now, you see; that is, the upper dorsal or through the brachial area. Not too heavy in the cervical, but coordinating those with the lumbar plexus, the brachial plexus, and of course gently this should be given, to keep drainages, to also keep FROM any congestion in any of the plexus from which the stomach, the kidneys, the liver obtain their impulse from the cerebrospinal nerve system.
-
Do this. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How long should the Grape Poultice be kept on each evening? (A) Until it has heated sufficient to be inactive.
-
(Q) The Mutton Tallow rub and violet ray applied once a day? (A) Applied once or twice, if there is the recurrent condition. Not on the first day would we apply it twice anyway; but may be better after there has been one of the general OSTEOPATHIC relaxations.
-
(Q) How long before any other nourishment may be given? (A) This will gradually be increased. And the next would be added in arrowroot, junket, and things of that kind. Not the milk as yet, but malted milk with burned whiskey in same will be very well a little later. Not too much at the time, but may be given often to satisfy the appetite and make for the strength.
After the second or third day of these applications, we should have an evening or night of almost complete rest throughout. And then we will see improvements much faster; provided there is not any setback through other conditions that are not apparent at present.
-
(Q) In giving the enemas should the Glyco-Thymoline be added at all now? (A) Glyco-Thymoline should always be used, or SOME intestinal antiseptic. Glyco-Thymoline taken internally would not be amiss for the body; not over five to six drops - this of course in water. This may be taken once a day, or once in every day or two. Five or six drops in a teaspoonful of water.
-
(Q) All internal medicines should be discontinued, then? (A) Unless there are other conditions that arise.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 10/2/35 Cousin, Mr. [1005]‘s letter: “[852] is much better, and [2704] and [1312] [her parents] give the full credit to your readings for the improvement. They had five doctors with her before I induced them to get a reading [852-3 on 9/21/35]. Of course I was over here flat of my back at the time, but I had [2704] come over and I talked to him for thirty minutes and [419] sat in on the conversation. I don’t know what happened over there, but that night [419] wired for the first reading. I never put as much force in a ‘sales talk’ before in my life. I really put the ‘pressure’ on [2704] that afternoon, and I thank God now that I did. Only you all know just how late we waited! They had Drs. Stites, Bell, Gary, Haynes, and Dr. Stites from Louisville. They pronounced the condition everything from colitis to appendicitis. Each differed on his method of treatment. You can imagine the state of mind that [1312] and [2704] were in. Finally we got straightened out and in two hours after they applied the first poultice [852]‘s stomach got easy and after the forty-eight hour period had elapsed she has been steadily improving. When the readings prescribed osteopathic treatments we engaged Dr. Martha Beard and she has been following the directions explicitly. I have had a couple of talks with her and she seems to be very much enthused about your work. She has expressed willingness to follow any readings to the letter that are turned over to her. She has certainly been following them in [852]‘s case because Mother [760] and I have both been checking on her.” [He thanked EC for his own recent Ck. Physical for an injured foot.]
R2. 10/4/35 Father, Mr. [2704]‘s letter: “Words cannot express our appreciation for what you have done for [852]. We had five doctors with her and she was steadily growing worse every day until we started the treatments you sent, and now she is getting better every day. She has slept real well for the last two nights and said she was feeling better this morning. She sure has been keeping up with the readings and won’t do a thing unless you said for her to. She is getting hungry now and wanted you to give a check reading on her and see what other nourishment she could have, as she is getting tired of sick folks’ diet. Also how long she should keep up the grape poultice and osteopathic treatments.”
R3. 10/4/35 See 852-9.
R4. 10/8/35 Cousin, Mr. [1005]‘s letter: “[852] seems to be improving right along. Mother [760] stayed over there and followed the rdgs. explicitly. They had five doctors with her when we got the first rdg. and after we obtained results from the first poultice they started raising hell about the ‘faith doctoring’, and refused to cooperate with us. About that time Mother [760] got under way and when she set her foot down, [2704] got rid of the doctors. From that point it was just another one of the miracles worked by the readings, and they sure pulled the kid through from the grave, for she had one foot in it. [2704] is the most enthusiastic fellow about your work that you ever saw. This case has gotten us some nice publicity in …”
R5. 10/16/35 Cousin, Mr. [1005]‘s ltr.: “I am writing this at the request of [1312] and [852], as they are rather disturbed over her diet and want to know how long the present tr. should be continued. [852] says she feels very much improved… Should vegetable juices be given which are commercially canned with preservatives? Should she be allowed to swallow the meats of any vegetables at this time; if so, how prepared? Can any solid foods be taken into the stomach now? Is Ovaltine with water good for her how? Should soda-salt enemas be kept up longer? Can mineral oil or olive oil be given to facilitate eliminations? Should the Tallow, Camphor, Benzoin and Turpentine rubs be con’t? Please name foods that should be taken now.”
R6. 10/21/35 See 858-10.
R7. 6/15/37 Reply to Questionnaire:
Date of Reading Sept. thru Oct. 1935. Case No. 852-3 thru 852-8.
(PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS CAREFULLY)
(1) In your opinion did the analysis of the Reading cover the condition?
Yes, the Reading covered the condition.
(2) Give symptoms of condition described correctly?
I was taken with chills and a high fever. After taking the Medicine given by the physician for what he termed malaria, the condition became worse causing excessive vomiting. I could not retain anything, not even water. Then, I began to suffer with pains in my chest, abdomen, and right side. There was such a burning sensation in my stomach that it felt as if it were on fire, and this condition spread up into the chest.
(3) What was the the physician’s analysis of this condition?
The physicians diagnosed the condition as malaria fever, malta fever, colitis, gastritis, and typhoid fever. One of the physicians stated it was appendicitis [Dr. Beard thought it was peritonitis. 10/18/39 Ltr. under 1797-2 Reports refers to [852]‘s case as peritonitis.] but after we received the readings, we knew from them that was the inflammation that it was causing the severe pain in the right side in the region of the appendix.
(4) Have the suggestions given in the Reading been followed exactly as outlined?
Yes, the suggestions given in the Reading have been followed.
(5) For how long?
One year. The diet is still being carried out according to the instructions given in the Reading.
(6) Describe the extent to which improvements have resulted?
I am now able to eat anything that is included on my diet sheet, and am in a better physical condition than before my illness. I have not had any recurrence of malaria fever nor gastritis.
(7) Comment.
Under the care of six physicians I failed to respond to their treatment, and was gradually growing worse. When we received the first reading, the treatments given were successful.
