This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of January, 1929, in accordance with request made by [900] and [137].

1. [137]: You will now have before you the bodies of [900] and [137], located here in this room - the conditions and environments, and people associated with them in their daily life. You will answer the questions that we ask of you.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring minds, [900] and [137]. These we have had before. Also the associations in daily life, the surroundings and conditions as related thereto. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) Relating to a warning being given to [137] regarding [5768], how can he be forearmed? (A) In the manner as is indicated by that as given, the intuitive forces of the body [137] are such that immediately when in association [5768] the mental abilities are such as to know the tend or the trend of that purport in the mind of [5768]. When acting in the manner as in keeping with the purport as given through intuitive or innate forces. Here - a moment - let’s describe innate and intuitive forces, as this may be better understood: We have a difference in the development of two individuals. We may use this as the illustration of that as is meant, by development and that that is meant by intuitive forces. We have bodies, individual entities, who have been oft associated together. Now again these are associated together in ANOTHER manner. One, [137], with a high purport in life - that is, the at-oneness of a purport with the purport of the Creative Energy. The other, rather that of, “What may I for MYSELF gain through varied experiences, or contacts?”, and only seeing that of the material side of life. Life (speaking of [5768]) to the entity meaning the opportunity to use whatever knowledge the body may have to turn into the channels that will bring the best for the body. Not that entity - not that other higher relations don’t at times manifest in same, and at times the body is above normal or above the ordinary in the abilities to accomplish. Such a development! The other one, wherein the high purport of life, the associations of the ENTITY in this mental development of such an experience as to be able to READ, as it were, whether the purport of the body [5768] is in accord with good or bad - as are termed, or in the PURPORT of the individual to apply that experience as is set before him, see?

4. (Q) Does that mean regarding [5768] that at the present time his mind is not made up as to whether or not he will return to the floor? (A) Not made up as to whether or not he will return to the floor, or will act in accord with those conditions (a stubborn being!) that will bring the activities in that direction.

5. (Q) Am I [137] right in inferring that in the event he does return, I had better wait until then to make my plans, rather than lay a program now? (A) Correct.

6. (Q) When was I [137] before associated with [5768] in earth’s plane? (A) In the rebuilding of the wall, and in the blind healed by the pool of Siloam.

7. (Q) Does that refer to my [137]‘s experience as Jude? (A) “My experience as Jude.”

8. (Q) In what capacity was [5768]? (A) The man healed!

9. (Q) Does that give [5768] a liking or disliking for me now? (A) Can’t keep away. At times like, and at times would like to take advantage of.

10. (Q) Regarding [143]‘s condition, will she be able to go away next Thursday? [See 143-9.] (A) With a continued improvement, without the contracting of other congestive elements, she will. We would apply the light occasionally with this.

11. (Q) She is getting the light now. (A) Occasionally.

12. (Q) Should have it more often? (A) Should have it more often. Not long period, but sufficient to set up a proper reaction. Let the radiating force be from the 2nd and 3rd dorsal center radial focus of the light.

13. (Q) Should it be given more than once a day? (A) Preferably would be given - divide the time and give morning and evening.

14. (Q) What is the difference from a less practical view of what I [137] call hunches and vision presentations? (A) The same condition, presented in a different form. Here, a crude illustration: A tree may be planted upon which there may be bourne several kinds of fruit. Each draws its sustenance from the same source, yet one may be plum, an apple, a pear. What makes the difference? The change in that of the inception of that study given by Creative Energy. Apply same in the mental mind of man. An inception may be from a vision, or an intuitive force - which is, as described, the action of the mental development of the body, correlated WITH that of spiritual development. Or a correlation of subconscious forces and superconscious action. In that of a vision, these may be presented from a cosmic force in conjunction with the at-onement of the individual development - and hence are the radiation of the same force, taking a different line of action, see?

15. (Q) Does that represent a different kind of vibration? (A) All force is vibration, as all comes from one central vibration and its activity into, out from, and its own creative forces, as given, with that of the divine as manifested in man, is same vibration - taking different form. Here, we may give a dissertation, in a manner, as to what Creative Energy is, as related to man and his activity, and as the forces as are seen and about man. As has been given, true it was said, “Come let us make man in our image,” in his own image created God, or created by God, was man. Then containing all of the vibrations that were without, were given into that whole being of man - which in ITS vibration gave man the soul. ABOVE all else created, see? Then we see how the evolution of force in vibration brought up to the point wherein man becomes one WITH the Creative Energy, or the Godhead - WITH the ability to become that that he is NOT at the beginning, by making himself absent from the will of the Creator or Creative Energy. How? In that the ability to create mentally, and with the hand MAKES that which IS the created force of that mind, and with that may make destructive forces for self. Hence man becomes one WITH the Creative Energy, or away FROM that Creative Energy. When man makes himself one WITH - then all things were created by him, without him there was nothing created that was created, or made - and are then HIS by rightful heir, even as shown in His Son, wherein man [is] shown the way, or the access to this all Creative Energy.

16. (Q) Will a suggestion be given who should comprise the Nominating Committee for the Association? (A) Should be appointed by the chair.

17, (Q) That is, by [900]. (A) [900].

18. (Q) Committee of three? (A) Committee of three.

19. (Q) Relative to the dream suggestion and information just given, is it more difficult for me [137] to visualize things than to feel them? (A) More difficult to visualize than feel, but they become one and a part of the same - as felt, THEN visualized, see? Here:

In the activities of the mind of man, a visualization is a portion of a MATERIAL experience, no matter whether in the present experience or a combination and correlation of many experiences. While that FELT is the sum-total of ALL experiences, correlated with the superconscious, or the life itself, PROVIDED the purport of the INDIVIDUAL is in keeping WITH the purport of life, or truth, see? Then we find when one - as the body here, my servant [137] - visualizes this the sum of the experience. When FELT, the sum of not ONLY experience, but of the divine - hence, as has oft been said, those that would guide the body - mentally, physically and spiritually - are ABOVE the normal or ordinary, or the regular - or the even higher forces in cosmic influence. Hence harder to visualize until felt. When felt, the visualization is a PORTION of the activity set out.

20. (Q) May I [137] ask who referred to me as “my son David”? (A) In that of the higher force in Joseph. [3/6/29 See 900-426, Par. 5-A inc. GD’s note.]

21. (Q) Is this entity, Father Joseph, who has given me [137] this counsel? [My father, Joseph when I was Jude?] (A) Yes. And listen, and hark back to those periods when from these higher realms there was given by self, this ego, this I AM; this “my son David” [GD’s note: David was [137]‘s middle name], even in that period when the self sought entrance into the present experience - there has been felt that I and thou gathered at the side of him through whom word now comes [EC], and said: “Be faithful, and the desire of thine heart will be accomplished when I come.” [Promise to EC as a child?] Hark! There would come Him the Lord of the Way [Michael, the archangel], and he would speak with thee:

“Bow thine head, for unto THEE is committed NOW the keeping of that way in the earth that [man] may know that the rod has not departed from Judah, neither has the lion been allayed that rose up in Midian, and unto Him that thou would counsel in teaching my people the ways. Lord of Hosts, be thou near as this, thy servant, bows and calls on those forces as were manifest in the flesh in the way as goeth down by Bethsaida, and as were gathered in the house of Joseph - as in Capernaum many came and kneeled and called thy servant blessed. HE now is given that charge of he that goes as the light to his people.”

R1. 1/14/29 Mr. [900]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, 115 - 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Edgar:-

Can’t tell you how wonderful impressive the reports were we took while in Virginia Beach. We discussed them all the way home and among our many conclusions were, that the end of [137]‘s reading referred a great deal to this sort of having charge of me. You seemed to impress it by saying, that he had to sit on me, and between the three of us, on our way home, we sort of worked out in a general way what really seemed to us to be meant. It was too remarkable to discuss in such a letter as this and look forward to the opportunity of talking it over with you some time in the future.

[195]‘s report on the [4665] Motor helped me immensely in my book and had not his theories been thoroughly substantiated, the whole fundamental principle I am expounding in the book, would have been blown to pieces, and certainly I would have been left in confusion. As it was, it was simply the same thing over again said in a manner that makes it more applicable and practical daily endeavors of physical man or of its application in terms of machinery, i.e., that which Man does with his hand.

To you, of course, it must mean that most of you troubles are over for the giver of the promise to you here on earth to fulfill it, and in a practical sort of way I believe, if you keep [137] well posted on your plans and on the moves you are making, we will neither of us have much to worry about in carrying them out.

We discussed the matter of a Nominating Committee and came to same conclusion regarding the why and wherefore of this matter. These I would rather discuss with you in person than put in writing, but I believe the three of us came to about the same conclusion. We also agree that it would be best to have Miss Gladys include in the Minutes of the last meeting, that in accordance with the report taken a Nominating Committee is to be appointed by the Chairman or President, the duties of said Nominating Committee shall be to meet once every three years at a sufficiently reasonable time before the official election of Officers of the Corporation to nominate candidates for the offices and to submit them to each of the Board of Trustees in writing at a reasonable time prior to the official meeting of the Board of Trustees for the latter to vote upon at their regular meeting. This Committee, immediately after it functions, will dissolve and members are to be reappointed to function in the same manner prior to the succeeding election by the elected President. This, I think, should be included in the Minutes of the last meeting, as it was intended by us to do so, and without further red tape may be included just as though it was moved, seconded and passed that afternoon when we met. Kindly further include in the Minutes the fact that the Chair appointed the following to this Committee:

Mr. Edgar Cayce [294] Mr. […] [195] Mr. […] [137]

the Committee to elect its own chairman.

[137] spoke very beautifully regarding this to me and [195] and [195] seemed to agree with him. He said: “the forces have chosen you to lead in this work and leadership shall never be taken from you until you have had complete opportunity to fulfill the purpose for which you have been so chosen.” Remember, the promise made by a physical body is just as sacred as a promise such as I made as a spiritual body.

I think he seemed to hit the nail on the head, don’t you?, and explained the reason the report gave what it did.

I certainly am anxious to have the opportunity to use the institutions we have, and are and have in the future, intention of creating to fulfill my mission, and if it may best be filled in the capacity of occupancy of the Chair, then for that long and for that long only, do I want to occupy that position. I think I made this clear to you then, yet there may be those Trustees who did not fully comprehend the reason for my being maintained in this position, despite the fact that there are those Trustees who are probably better organizers or executives in a physical way. They may certainly have their way but until my message resounds from the hillside at Virginia Beach and takes root in the minds of at least some individual, they will have to wait their turn, and he who succeeds me must be one who is so developed and so willing as to carry on that the message may be even more efficiently and in a better manner (as I have no doubt it will) carried to the hearts and minds of humanity.

[137] seems to stand as the protector, such that both of us have our chance to do that which we desire from our hearts here in this world to do, and he seems to realize it.

I suggest that you now have the new Blue Book reprinted, making the corrections required by present condition and the corrections necessary in the Committees. I further want, at this time, to remind you to take that report stating specifically the duties of each of the Committee, not forgetting to state the members of each in the introduction of each Committee as presented to you. No doubt, if you give the Blue Book in for print before you go away, it will be ready for you about on your return [from vacation].

R2. 2/5/29 Mr. [137]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, 115 - 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Edgar:-

Enclosed please find check for 1200, the regular monthly contribution for February, as I don't know whether [900] sent this to you or not. If he did, will you please let me know for our records. The other check, 1424.18, to be applied on the payment of the additional five lots on the ocean front adjoining our present property, as outlined by Van Patten.

I am sure you feel as we do, that this is very valuable property for the Association, and in order to help the cause along, as, of course, we always want to, this money is being sent by [900] and I personally and not from the Association account. I just state this so that it will keep your records clear.

When speaking to Van Patten I tried to be emphatic, that we wanted the title guaranteed, as I think that is important. If you think so too, will you please see that he has it done.

As usual, I suppose the details of acquiring this new property will fall on you. My understanding is, 1000 mortgage to be due in one year, another 1000 in two years at 6% interest. If this all seems satisfactory to you, go ahead and close.

I hate to trouble you too much, as I know you must be swamped with work after you vacation. I surely am. Strange that we both returned on the same day, and I hope your visit benefitted you as much as mine did me.

There are [so] many things I would like to talk about and write you about, but I will save you the trouble and call you on the telephone within a day or so.

If there is anything I can do, you know that you can call on me at any time.

I hope that you and the family are all well and that I shall see you in the near future.

R3. 2/9/29 Mr. [137]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Edgar,

I have wanted to write to you for a long time and much has turned over in my mind that I should like to discuss with you, so here and now I want to make my apologies for this stationery, the writing if you are unable to read it, and the letter if it turns our to be a book or sermon, and annoys or bores you. So much for that.

In one of the beautiful readings you have given the phrase “Forward March” was unexpectedly given. That it seems to me might be a big part of life; not merely in a physical sense, but in its meaning as a whole. Is, this, not that which we are endeavoring to do in the Association. We owe a debt a great debt. We have allowed ourselves to be spiritually awakened, we have had a path chosen for us to travel. Of our own accord we could never contract this debt, but we have been allowed to make it. It is a debt of gratitude for the help we are enabled to enjoy thru our own development, our own righteous desire of being at oneness with the “One”. But then what are we to do with this help received, the Divine awakening? Yes you know the simple answer help others SERVE, SERVE, SERVE always keeping in the ways, and serving in the manner of, “HE” whom has given His all to us in his image. Given us all, but left us delicately to choose right from wrong.

Having been given our opportunity how shall the debt be repaid? That too will be with His help if we will only permit, and the supreme efforts shall be thru our institution. In giving to mankind that which we have learned and are ever striving to learn. Thru the institution will come our message, and we pray the good, we know to be everyone’s if they will only accept it.

This clumsy jumble of words was prompted by a letter I wrote [257] suggesting we expected him to see to the donation of the furniture. For I note in your report you have received invoices, however that may be just a matter of forms, and I have written to [257] telling him what we expected.

I took the liberty of telling him our work might at times seem a great effort a sacrifice and strain, and who among us knows it more than you and [900]. You especially whose life has been devoted to the cause, you under all difficulties, hardships and sacrifices have enabled yourself at this date to be the means of our very expression of truth. You have indeed been faithful. And always remember Edgar, when things look bad, when you are blue, when you are worried when you might have a feeling of “Oh what is the use” remember you now at this time are just on the threshold of truly answering that question. Your studies, and observations are going to be a demonstration to physical man of what life is and what we should do with our earthly experience. Does that mean you and I and all of us are to sit back put our feet on a desk and say well here we are come and learn from us? Certainly not. Does it mean we are to broadcast our doctrines? Certainly not.

But it does mean we shall and must live a life exemplifying what the truth is. What the truth teaches us. In our own lives, in our own actions must the proper vibrations exert themselves thru us. We all have our share to do to create the perfect balance. Just see [195] putting into scientific demonstration of that one force [[4665] motor], that which [900] is putting into philosophical teachings. Surely there is balance. We must give to those who seek.

We have much work before us Edgar and truly it can only be done with God’s help. We must not delay in starting the classifications of the information at hand as given in the reading on the work. While on the subject would suggest when you have the opportunity to take the reading on the functions and duties of the various committees it will be most helpful.

Was indeed sorry to hear you were suffering from “neuritis” but hope that is now a matter of history. Yes, what is history but the arrangement of men’s experiences as related merely to change, as we know everything is in constant change, and that is why time plays no part in the subconscious time being merely the change.

No doubts Van Patten told you I wrote to him. What is your opinion of the new property. [900] is at a loss to understand why the building and loan wants bonds for twice the amount of money they loan us. I don’t understand it either. Do you.

You must be pleased with the progress you are making at the hospital. I am anxious to hear how things are progressing.

The only reason I can think of for writing this letter is the great necessity for us to carry on to our goal. To complete that which we have started. To assure you of the part we all want to play. Or as you have said “Forward March.”

R5. 2/20/29 EC’s letter to [137]:

Dear [137]:-

I have yours of the 9th, and I don’t know how to answer. I wish I could talk with you concerning many things that come up at times. It always looks like we are in such a hurry when we do have the opportunity to get together, or we have some special matter in hand that we want to talk about or discuss, or have gotten something that is worrying us and we want to get it off our gizzards. It seems to me that, could we all have seen the man that left here last evening, we would feel that our work here is not in vain. You know our first patient came down for treatment on the 11th, from Philadelphia [Mr. [470]]. He had been told that he was in a pretty bad condition, and he was - but to see the man steadily each day getting better and better - it is even better than Mr. Curie could say. After his first day here, I think he averaged putting on a pound and a half each day in weight. He went home yesterday feeling alright, in fine shape, ready to take up his work again and go on making the very best of everything. He said to me, “Mr. Cayce, I’ve known you and your work a long time. You have saved me, I am sure, many a day and night of suffering - but I understand the purpose of the institution better than I could have possibly understood it had I not come to see - I understand the heart of many of those of your associates. I would like to know each and every one of them personally, and to personally thank them for what they have done for me, and for what I know can and will be done for others if they will only do as I did - come and let the work be carried out to the letter just as given - then they will get the results as I did.” That’s possibly the answer to MANY of the things that have come up. There are several others taking treatment - new ones every day locally and out of town trying to get in. We will be open possibly by the first. We are waiting on the linens and a few other little things that are needed to get straightened out.

Yes, as you say, “Forward March” is and has been EVER the real pith of the information that has been given. I have often thought of how many times it has insisted to [900], in his earlier days especially, that “in the doing of this you will get understanding - commence!”

Last Sunday afternoon there were quite a number of people out from Norfolk to see the building. Among them was a family that I have known ever since I’ve been here - one of the business men (book and stationery) of Norfolk [Mr. Wm. Freeman of Wm. Freeman & Son, stationers]. They came in and were astonished to see the undertaking. While, as he said, he had known me for three years - nearly four - he hadn’t known what it was all about that we were undertaking to do, but he thought it was very wonderful - a very marvellous work. The next day (Monday), I was in town to see about some matters - dropped in to see him. He took me by the arm and carried me off upstairs, and he told me this:

“Cayce, you know we only have the one boy - he’s in the business here, and his mother and I realize it won’t be long before he will be in charge of everything. It has been rather a burden to us that he has constantly gotten farther and farther away from what WE have been brought up to think as the Church, or old theology. He has no patience whatever with the ministers of the day - this one, that one and the other, constantly seem to be a bore to him. But when we were discussing you and your work last night, he turned to his mother and his wife and said, ‘Now that, to me, is religion! THAT man I would like to do everything possible to see that he succeeds, for the life - the people that come in contact with him - tell the tale without his preaching anything’.”

That is possibly saying the same thing, [137], as you expressed in your letter. That I know, and you know, is the great trouble of the world at large today - people preach what they would LIKE for others to believe, but what they do not ACT themselves. Yes, it is our lives, our walks in and out before men, that tell the tale - just as it was with the Master long ago. It wasn’t that he was not criticized. It wasn’t that he followed in the footsteps of those that had been teachers before, for the didn’t - for, as he said himself, “John came neither eating nor drinking nor associating with the rabble, yet they said he was of the devil. I come eating and drinking WITH you all and you say I have a devil,” - but His life was such that we, through exemplifying that simple gospel of “Have no other gods before me, and love your neighbor as yourself”, will make ourselves gain a better understanding of our relationship to our Creator, or to that Creative Energy we call God, and to that CREATED THROUGH that Energy we call our fellow man! So we MUST carry on. I just hope and trust that I may be better able to serve than I have in the past. I have tried

• possibly not as hard as I should have - but have tried to do the right. Not that I profess to be good, or even moral, but I DO think I AM sincere and live what I believe!

I received the letter yesterday with the notice from the Guaranty Title & Trust Co. I will attend to this. It is the payment on the property here where I live. [900] knows about it, but I don’t know that he has told you just what it was.

I believe, truly, the property that has just been acquired practically doubles the value of that we already hold.

I also received this morning the check of 2000 towards the expenses. That will help us considerably in getting up this month's bills - some of them we must meet - some of them we will possibly be able to hold off for a while yet. You can't imagine how very busy I'm being kept. We have two or three readings every day, except Sunday - and we have had to put in Sunday recently, as you know from that sent you (and I hope it helped matters out). Our first check for the Hospital was 35. The patient stayed at the hotel, of course, and this was for his treatments. Very good beginning, especially when we know the man went home highly pleased. He did a good deal of work around the Hospital after the first few days. Helped us set up beds, rubbed off furniture, moving it about, etc.

The grounds are beginning to look real good. This we have had to spend a lot of money on, but - as you said sometime ago - we don’t want to spoil the whole thing by being penny wise and pound follish [foolish] respecting this part of the work.

Hope you will have the opportunity to get down to see us sometime in the very near future, and with kindest personal regards to [140], the little lady [143] and yourself, I am
