This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 105th Street & Ocean, Virginia Beach, Va., this 18th day of August, 1931, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [943].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [943] - this we have had before. Now, we find there are some changes in the physical forces of the body since last we had same. We find that there is the tendency for the forces as produced irritation to continue in that of gas forming in the system, and hence the uneasiness and soreness as is felt. There is NOT inflammation in the appendix itself, rather that of an intestinal inflammation. Were those properties taken as given, with the non-acid or more alkalin diet - so that there would be a cleansing OF that that has PRODUCED the inflammation, this would be all that would be necessary. Should there continue the inflammation, and the appendix itself BECOME inflamed, operation - but it ISN’T that condition in the present.

3. (Q) What causes pains in stomach and intestines? (A) Didn’t you just see what was said? Gas forming from the condition in the intestine, produced by over-acid condition - see?

4. (Q) Has he been having the proper diet? (A) Would there be inflammation if it was cleansed? or with the proper diet would there have been PRODUCING acid, or gases?

5. (Q) Please give proper diet. (A) We have given this! Do that, as we have given! We are through.

R1. GD’s note: Dr. Shorell, the M.D., insisted on operation for appendicitis, he wouldn’t be responsible for consequences. He operated and later said the reading was correct, that the inflammation was not actually in the appendix. Case [943] - almost died - he was in the hospital six weeks or more after the operation.

R2. 8/19/31 Ltr. from [943]‘s wife [5569] to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce;

After speaking with you the other day we took [943] to the hospital and they performed the operation immediately. His temperature had gone up to 104 and he had suffered all night the most awful agony and was so weak that, although he did manage to speak to you, he couldn’t hold the phone.

I am in such a daze of grief and worry that I don’t know what I’m doing. You see, the appendix burst, and peritonitis set in, and the Doctors are very careful about raising my hope. It is awful. They tell me that he is a terribly sick man and that he is just as apt to go one way as the other. They said it was about an even chance. They didn’t remove the appendix

• it had burst, you see, and drained it and are still draining it. He is so weak I could cut out my heart and give it to him. They haven’t told him how seriously ill he is but he seems to realize it. God in heaven, Mr. Cayce, I’ve got to see him through this and try to be a good soldier, but between the financial worries and the agony in my heart I hardly know what I’m about.

Mr. Cravis is going to get together all the interested parties to try to see what he can do to raise some money. I’ve wired my people but they never answered. I don’t think they are home, away for a few weeks and haven’t heard from them account of not being in Virginia Beach and not having written her that I was here. So that is out, that source, and I am about frantic.

Mr. Cayce, please pray awfully hard for him and I feel it will do a lot of good and thank you for your kindness. Received the medicine to-day.

Please ask Mrs. Cayce to pray, too, and the others. And my love to all, [5569]

R3. 8/21/31 Ltr. from [943]‘s wife [5569] to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce;

Thank you very much for the herbs which I received in good order.

The Doctors said that the crises will have passed Tuesday, and how I will live through this week is more than I know. He is, according to the Doctors, draining now, and his temperature fluctuates a lot, his pulse, from the poison, is rapid, but continues strong. He is conscious, but fearfully weak and knows he is very ill, but not the reason. The drainage is copious, which is what they want, of course.

They had to call in a specialist yesterday to catheterize him. He had a stricture, and they must leave in the catheter for six more days, and it is making him so nervous and uncomfortable.

Mr. Cravis and Mr. Zentgraf are very kind and have taken care of the immediate expenses, which are quite a lot as the hospital requires a large fee in advance. But I must have more money, somewhere. My Mother sent me a little. I don’t know where to turn, and the double burden is crushing. Can you make any suggestions, Mr. Cayce? This is a filthy world, when the life of a good and splendid man is purchased with money.

Please let me hear form you, and any suggestions you may offer will be gratefully received.

Dear Mr. Cayce;

Mr. [943] is making real progress now. Every day brings him nearer his old self and by the end of this month I hope to have him home.

There are reasons beyond our finite minds; perhaps some day we shall understand them. I do really believe there is a Divine Purpose behind our trials. At any rate there are events in our life which are fore-ordained. Perhaps these things are meant for the education, the chastening of our souls. So perhaps this experience was meant to be, and it is not our place to question. In God’s own time we shall be shown the why fors.

Nature is healing him now and he is longing to “up and about.”

We both send our kindest personal regards, and thank you again and again for your constant friendship and the solace of your prayers.
