1. EC: We have the body, the enquiring mind, [1097]; this we have had before.

2. In considering the circumstances, the abilities, the associations and connections, as we find:

3. Those that offer the greater possibilities, the greater opportunities, would be through those associations or those connections that would have to do with collections - or superintending of same - through the Home Loan Corporations.

4. And the approach would be to the political activities, or those that have charge of that district - to Jones, who heads the Finance Corporations.

5. To be sure, the greater part - or in the greater part the loans made are, or may soon be, at their peak. But there will be an opening for those who have abilities such as have been exhibited by the activities of the body, [1097], in those directions.

6. And, as we find, these offer the greater opportunities.

7. Do that.

8. Make those associations.

9. While there are many channels, many activities that might be in the main in line with such activities, these indicated are the better - as we find; for those associations with the acquaintances, activities in fields within the State, these become too easily, too soon, overturned; while those from this angle or direction indicated - and through such channels - would be such as to create a lasting job for the activities of this body.

My dear friend:

Your last kind letter together with the reading have been received, both of which I appreciate very much.

The reading is none the less appreciated and I have the usual faith, but for your information will say that I have heretofore tried for a Federal Government position having sent in to Washington strong recommendations from both Texas Senators and otherwise, but to no avail. Those grafters in Washington do not seem to desire the services of honorable efficient men - only crooked politicians receive preferment. I am now trying to get back with the State Banking Department, but as yet do not know what my fate will be.

Am sorry you do not know how our mutual friend [257] is getting along. I wrote him a long letter some 60 days ago, but have received no answer. Was hoping he was in a line of business wherein he could use my services advantageously, but perhaps he is not so situated and hesitated to let me know his true financial condition. I have not been employed now for five months and you well know what that means.

I want to assure you my good friend that I most fully appreciate your interest in my welfare and only wish that there was something further you could do, but as stated, I have heretofore tried out the powers that be in Washington for a job in the best possible way and have received nothing but a promise to do something for me when there is an opening and you well know that there has been plenty of openings. What I was trying to get was to be appointed one of the Federal Deposit Ins Corp, Examiners and I happen to know that they have placed several men who are really inexperienced - so that’s that.

When you get a line on [257] please let me know just how he is getting along - same will be treated as confidential.

My dear friend:

I have not written you for sometime, although you have been on my mind more often than you might suppose.

Am sure you would be interested to know of my progress in forming a business connection since receipt of the reading you so kindly gave me. Well it appears that I have completely lost out with the Banking Department since the new Commissioner, an Allred Appointee, assumed office. No fault of my own, but the new Governor has used all state departments to further along his political career and in the beginning practically cleaned house. In my opinion, he is the shrewdest dirty little politician Texas has ever yet had for Governor.

As to an appointment out of Washington, after having sent in some of the strongest recommendations to be had, which included two the Senators from Texas, the result was only a promise of future consideration. Had I gone to Washington I might have gotten somewhere, but that takes money you know and I could not afford the trip. Be that as it may I am now on the outside looking in regardless of my integrity and qualification.

About three months ago I came to … and formed a partnership with whom I consider a reliable man. As revealed on this letter head, our line of business is accounting and auditing as well as income tax returns. Have not moved to …, just batching it for the time being. My wife and home is still in …, and our children are all grown and doing well…

I have not done so well in my new business thus far for it has been very dull here in … in our line, but I hope to add Real Estate, Rentals and Insurance by Jan’y. 1st, if it is possible for us to do so. Without capital you well know how difficult it is to accomplish what one starts out to do no matter how smart or well qualified and right there is where I have been handicapped.

Have been considering giving up the business referred to and make an effort to obtain a position with the Commercial Standard Insurance Co, of Ft Worth a big concern which writes all lines of insurance including fire and casualty. Mr. A. Morgan Duke, is at the head of this concern and Mr. R. F. Siddons, is his first ass’t, both good friends of mine. Some few months ago they promised to take me on at the first opportunity, but thus far nothing has developed.

I dislike very much to request another reading, but would certainly like to know how to proceed in getting properly lined up with these people - can you help me? How is [257] by this time? When you see him kindly express my regards. Give him my address and ask him to write me - what is his address please - have completely lost track of the dear fellow.

Are you coming to the Centennial this fall - it is great show worth seeing and I would like awfully well to see you and [257].

My dear friend:

I guess you’ll conclude that I never write unless it is to use you for something.

Really my dear friend I have thought of you quite often of late and have intended to write ere this, but somehow just couldn’t get to it, so please overlook any seeming shortcomings.

Had a nice letter from our mutual friend [257] yesterday in which he suggested that I write you for a reading. Have thought of doing so for some little time, but hated to impose on your good nature.

As you probably know I have been in the service of the State Department of Banking for the past ten years until very recently at which time we had a change in administration and the new Commissioner saw fit to make several changes in his official staff and I happened to be among those who got the ax, and at present I am at home without employment, which certainly doesn’t set very well for I can’t afford to be idle. However, if I can get into something worth-while it may be a good thing that I make a change. The examining job I had with the Banking Department kept me away from home and family most all the while and I have been quite weary of such a situation for quite a long while.

I am now trying to get located in Austin in one of the other State Departments. Have my application pending with the Liquor Control Board and will file one with the Old Pension Board, two measoues [measures?] recently enacted by the Legislature. Have also filed an application with the State Comptroller and will file one with the State Board Of Control.

With my vast experience and clean reputation I should be successful in getting in somewhere.

How is friend [257] getting along now financially? In giving me this information the same will be treated as strictly confidential. Too bad about the loss of his mother. I certainly sympathize with the dear boy. The accidents to his dear little boys is likewise to be deplored, but I feel sure they will come out OK in the course of time.

If it will not be asking too much of you my dear friend, I will certainly appreciate a reading and will be very happy and appreciative to have your reading covering the following suitable to your convenience, which I am sure will be very helpful to me.
