1. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, those records of that entity now known as or called [1196].

2. In giving that from these records that may be helpful in the experience of the entity, know that even though indications do arise from astrological influences, even from the urges in the material experiences of the entity, that which makes for the development for the soul - which is the purpose for the entrance of a soul into material experience - is ever through the will for the entity to be in accord with that which is its ideal. If the ideal is chosen for material blessings, material benefits, self-indulgence, fame or fortune, then little may be the soul development; for in these manners there is the deceitfulness of fame or fortune. But rather being sincere to that which is the material manifestation of the spiritual impulses makes for that as may bring in its effectual way and manner the material blessings that are the more worth while, and the soul developments which are fulfilling the purposes of entrance into materiality.

3. From the astrological aspects we find the entity coming under those that are very close to the changes in the astrological nature. Yet we find Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, making for influences - from the sojourns of the entity there - that find and have found manifestations even in the material life of the entity in the present.

4. Venus we find making for a high sense of purpose. One that may be said to be rather controlled by duty and by sentiment, yet sentiment as of a dutiful nature making for rather the greater import upon the activities and the experiences of the entity. Hence in the choice then comes in the present experience the greater development.

5. In Mercury there is a high mental influence, as well as the associations with those things that deal with the high mental abilities, so far as material as well as spiritual influences are concerned in their effect upon the associations of the entity with others.

6. From Jupiter we find a great expanse of experience in many fields or phases of activity. And while these are individual in their nature, their effects are felt by rather the masses and the larger groups than by the individual - even for whom, through whom the application may be directed by the entity in its relationships with others.

7. Through Mars we find those influences - that may be considered as indiscretions of others, as well as madness and war - have brought many changes and many influences in the experience of the entity in the present; making not merely for habit-forming conditions but experiences that have changed the course of events, changed the course of habits, changed the course of relationships of the entity in the experience. Or, as has been indicated, circumstances through the influence have arisen. The choice has been made by the entity to allow same to make the change. These then make for an entity that has a high sense of the CORRECTNESS of relationships. One that has dealings with, and will have influences that become far-reaching to, groups and masses of individuals.

8. One of a high nervous temperament at times, and at times apparently very set, very demanding - or commanding as well as demanding in its relationships in directions. And yet very sentimental when we come to the basic influences in the experience.

9. One that is easy to anger, yet has as it were been easy to make for restitutions in those respects where there has been the convincing of the error in the way.

10. As to the appearances in the earth and those that have an influence in the experience of the entity in the present, we find:

11. Before this the entity was in the land of its present nativity, during those periods when in a portion of that known as the American Revolution the entity was in the capacity of one with Francis Marion or Nathanael Greene.

12. And with those activities in the southern portions of the land, the entity was active in the relationships as one that would be termed in the present as a keeper of the stores and the supplies, or as a quartermaster for those of that portion of the rebellious forces - or those that acted in the capacity for the overrunning of the land through those experiences.

13. And not only did the entity bring help and material benefits for those of its OWN groups but to those who fell into their hands. And the activities were oft ladened with good fellowship, as would be termed in such associations and experiences, yet prompted by that which has ever been from those experiences in the land when it was given by Him to the entity, “As ye do it unto these, the least of thy brethren, ye do it unto me.”

14. This should EVER be in the experience of the entity, then, that upon which the dealings with the fellow man hang always; that the love of the Father in the Son may be made manifest through these relationships and those dealings with thy fellow man.

15. The name then was Henry W. Wendell, and in the present experience from same there are those tendencies for gathering with groups. Not so much what may be termed as the joining of self with associations, societies or organizations, yet one whose affiliations with same find expressions in its dealings in the present.

16. One whose associations and affiliations always lead to those wherein the entity may be in the capacity of becoming through its activity of the greater service to others.

17. Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as the French and the Swiss land, in those periods when there were the turmoils between the lands that made for the greater destructive forces that arose between Germany and France.

18. Yet in those periods in which there were the combines before that, some hundred years, there were the activities of the entity then in that land between the Swiss, the French and the Spanish lands - as they are laid today.

19. The experiences were not so much in the capacity of one warring. Rather were there the preparations for the abilities of individuals in the various lands to make excursions or insurrections or raids; or rather - as we would term in the present - the preparations for routes, roads, communications, activities that dealt with such things that brought the greater convenience for those in the isolated places.

20. Then in the name Henrii Amerleneue, the entity made for developments. Though much of turmoils eventually arose through those activities, the purposes of the individual during the experience made for a purpose for a helpful service to many.

21. In the present travel, new scenes, preparing the way for others, making associations for communication lines, those for bringing to the experiences of others the greater convenience in a commercial and in an economic and in a home manner, arise from those developments in those experiences in what may be called the French or Swiss period of development.

22. Before that we find the entity was among those who came under the activities during those experiences when the Master walked in the land of promise. For the entity lived in the days when there were the preparations for the activities of the Master, many of which were in the hands - as it were - of the entity. For the entity then was that man, the keeper of the Inn, to which Joseph made application for a place for the birth of the Master of men.

23. Much of that as has been recorded as we find is not so well, nor in keeping with that the entity did then - as Apsafar; who was of the Essenes, though of a Jewish descent, though a combination of the Jewish and the Grecian.

24. For the entity then made a study of those peoples, knew of those things that had been foretold by the teachers of the Essenes, and made all preparations as near in keeping with what had been foretold as possible.

25. While among the entity’s stables was indeed the place of rest, it was because of the very rabble, the very act of those that were in authority - both as to the Roman as well as the various groups that were in their discussions making for the very things that would hinder or prevent those experiences that had been foretold. The entity did this rather for protection, than because - as has been said - there was “no room in the Inn.” But this was meant to be implied or conveyed, that they were “turned away.” Yet in the entity’s activities it was really for the protection. For the entity, too, had seen a vision; the entity, too, had heard, had known of the voices that were in the air. The entity, too, had seen the star in the east. The entity, too, had known of those experiences that must befall those that were making all the preparations possible under those existent conditions for Him that should come as a teacher, as a shepherd, as a savior.

26. Hence the experiences of the entity were as of those that are ever present in the entity’s inner self. And when there is sorrow, when there are cares for others - these become rather as an appealing experience in the entity’s activities.

27. For these are innate and are builded from those experiences in that land about Bethany, in which the great development, the great experiences came. And much might be given as to the history. For the entity was in that position where it stood rather not as one that made for a spy, either upon the Jewish or the Roman or those of its own peoples, but rather as a counsellor to those that sought to overcome those oppressions that were of a political as well as of a religious nature, owing to those conditions existing between the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Essenes, the Romans, and those teachings that were gradually being presented from the Grecians - or the entity’s peoples, for the correlation of the philosophies that were of the Grecians and those activities with the Teacher, the Nazarene.

28. Hence the entity - though in years - came to know the experiences, and there did the entity know its present companion or wife. For their relationships then were rather as father and daughter in the experience; for SHE stood watch.

29. In the experience then, there comes in from those activities the very nature of the religious influence, yet the adherence to any particular sect or any particular denomination - as ye term - or any particular group, seems to have a drawback to the entity, because of those very experiences of contentions that arose during that sojourn.

30. Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as or called the Arabian or Persian, when there were the campings between the Persian, the Mongoloid and the Egyptian lands.

31. The entity then headed one of the caravans that went to these various lands for those activities that may be known as or called the commercial or the inter-relationships for the benefits of each of the lands.

32. Then the entity was of the Persians, and one of the great men as would be termed; for many were under the authority of the entity in that experience.

33. Coming under the influence of the teachings, knowing of those activities in the ‘city in the hills and in the plains,’ the entity - after a sojourn there - undertook to distribute same to its associates in the various contacts made. And while some doubted, while some disturbing forces were brought - even to the wrecking at times of its own business relationships, through the very desire for aid there came help to many and to the entity through the own efforts in that sojourn.

34. The name then was Medeses.

35. In the present we will find those things that will have to do with individual activities or transportation or the correlations of groups in various centers as to their commercial activity, or as to those influences that make for the exchange in various commodities, become a portion of the entity’s activity. And these may be well. Hold fast, though, that in these associations thy ideals are not lost sight of.

36. Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as the Egyptian, during those periods when there were turmoils and strifes through the young king making for the trials of the priest and his banishment.

37. The entity then was among those peoples of the natives, but who joined with those of the priest’s activities; and BECAME as one that stood as it were between the king and the priest - until the banishment. And then the entity undertook with the reestablishing, the beginnings of the compounds of those things that were poisons as well as those things that were healing for the peoples.

38. Hence the very name as applied to the entity in those experiences brought about that known as the compounding of herbs, minerals, the various forces that make for syrups, infusions, tinctures and the like. The name then was Pocthecy.

39. In that experience the entity lost, the entity gained. For many of those abilities were turned into those things that work against those who forsook the things or who disobeyed the entity or whom the entity had grudges against or differences with.

40. As to the abilities of the entity then in the present and that to which it may attain, and how:

41. First know thine own ideal, as thou didst find in thine studies as the innkeeper upon the gateway to the city of learning.

42. As thou didst keep in touch with those from Carmel’s gates, so in thy dealings with thy fellow man in every walk of life thou mayest become as the gateway to understanding for many.

43. In the activities from the material standpoint, those things that have to do with commerce or trade, those that have to do with the exchange or the importation of economic forces and influences in the affairs of individuals in various lands become as a part of the entity’s activities.

44. Yet carry with these the basic forces as make for that as ye heard in thy declining years in the Bethany land, for thou wert present when he was raised from the dead, the friend Lazarus, as well as a friend to those that suffered through the experiences and the oppressions of those in authority.

45. Hence those rebellious forces that arise in thy experience at times in authority or in those who would make for great legislation or for great distinction. Yet know even as He gave, “He that would be the greatest among you, let him be servant of all.”

46. Ready for questions.

47. (Q) What was my name as Innkeeper in the time of the Master? (A) Abel-Tean.

48. (Q) What was the name of my daughter, who is now my present wife? (A) Anna.

49. (Q) Did I do any special work in that life besides as innkeeper? (A) As has been indicated, the entity was as a go-between between those in authority in the religious influences in the Roman and the Jewish faith; or a KEEPING of a watch, as a counsellor to those that sought the way.

50. (Q) What am I best qualified to do in my present life? (A) As has been indicated, assisting in those things that will have to do with communications or exchange in economic fields or activities; or those as were indicated by the natures of the activities in the dwellings both in Bethany and in the Persian land.

“Dear Mr. Cayce:

The life reading received. It is very, very interesting. Strange to say, often I have thought that I had at some time, at some place, known my present wife. Page 3 [1196-2, Par. 23] - as to the name Apsafar, is this not in conflict with Page 6 [1196-2, Par. 47-A], the name Abel-Tean?

I am in a hurry or would write more at length. Kindest regards to all.”

R2. 7/3/36 EC’s reply: “The names I think represent two different periods of existence.”

R3. 7/9/36 “I have read and read again, several times…each time I get more out of it. It is intensely interesting. My wife was thrilled to read it.”

R4. 7/19/36 [1196]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Your letter of the 15th inst., and so glad to hear from you. I feel that in corresponding with you I am nearer to actual talk with God than ever before. This is because I have seen what you can do when you submit yourself to God’s way, which is all-knowing, all-powerful.

Yes, the more I read the life reading you gave me the more I understand, the more I become to see things. I am not now, nor have I ever been, doubtful about there being a God.

I shall be so pleased to read the book on your life and work when it is ready, and the preface “There is a River,” well, it is just as it should be. I think the manner of approach of the author-to-be is just splendid.

Of course you know, from joining me in several talks about it while I was with you, that my health is the cause of my great concern at this time. I do pray that God will restore it. It is not that I greatly fear death, but that I want to live much longer and really be of further use in this life. I have felt since leaving Virginia Beach that could I remain with you a few months my health would return. I found that that the short stay I had with you was beneficial.

[1209] is still living, but is in a terribly weakened condition. They do not think he can live. I do not know what they have done, if anything, about your suggestions in the reading. That is, of course, their affair.

[5086] and [3774] are happy, and say they are coming over to see us soon. They send their love.

There was one question, perhaps two, I wanted to ask you while I was in Virginia Beach. Would you mind answering them in your next letter to me? They are:

(1) Have your readings convinced you that the dead are really alive, so to speak, in the spirit world? It would seem to me that the living die, live again in the spirit world, then return to earth for another life as human beings; that this happens over and over again. It is wonderful to me to think of it that way.

(2) In line with the question above, in your readings, or experiences otherwise, are you convinced that some dead person has communicated with you, that you were able to identify that dead person by his or her communications to you, and did you follow up while awake and in your normal senses such communications to verify them?

I am so anxious to read the book on ‘Atlantis.’ Be sure to let me know when it is on sale and where I may purchase a copy. Also, kindly give me this same information about the book on your life and work.

Please send me two sets of forms, application blanks for membership, outline of your work, etc. just like you had mailed me when I began correspondence with you before visiting you. I have two close friends here who are intensely interested.

Thanks for yours of 19th, certainly appreciate your feelings regards the work. Can I only so live as to keep that in the minds and hearts of those whom I try to be the channel for help am sure much good will come to many.

Glad you are enjoying the life reading am sure you will as others have find it more and more enlightening. Just had a line from the party writing the story about Atlantis, that will as the other book possibly be ready this fall.

Am sending you under separate cover two of the booklets and a little data any other data that we may have on any subject that data has been given on will be glad to send that if you will just let me know what it is.

Do hope you will soon be feeling real well again, keep close to the suggestions given and am sure you will see results in your experience. Life is a growth, and we grow better or worse each day.

Do hope the best for Mr. [1209], can readily realize the portion of his wife. Remember us to [5086] and [3774] certainly would be glad to see them.

Your questions. 1st, yes the reading and the experiences have convinced me that life is continuous, the spirit and Soul lives on. Apparently there is no set time for the return to earth, some early, some after lapse of many years to us. Apparently time is an unknown quantity to those in the spirit world. And that fact is often confusing to us here when we receive messages from them, or they in communicating to us.

2nd Yes, without doubt many have communicated with me. That I am sure. I can not tell or convince others by my own experience, but to me I am very positive there are hundreds that have talked with me, as face to face. Certainly have been able to identify such persons, many many times.

Oh, could go on and give experience after experience of this kind. This has been the outstanding experience for me, and happened only recently. Am getting the meaning or interpretation by degrees. Tell me what you make of it. [See interpretation under 294-185, Par 20-A, 6/30/36.]

Was in the garden here at work when heard a noise like the noise of swarm of bees, looked to see where they were, when saw the noise came from a chariot in the air with four white horses and driver, did not see face of driver. This lasted only a few minutes. I was trying to persuade myself this was not true and that it was only imagination; when heard a voice saying look behind you. Looked and beheld a man in Armor, shield, helmet, Knee guards, Cape but no weapon of any kind. His countenance was like the light, armor as silver or aluminum. He raised his hand in salute and said, “The chariot of the Lord and the horsemen thereof.” Then disappeared. I was really weak not from fright but awe and wonder. A most beautiful experience and I hope I may be worthy of many more.

I am a far better man than I was, all due to the two days spent at Va. Beach with you. My wife, too, feels the same way, since I have told her that you helped me to a realization, as I never had before, of God and His Way. Please continue to pray for us - we are so happy.

Thanks for yours of the 5th. Just the stimuli need at this time. Haven’t been feeling so good myself. Let the cares of this world get a hold on me at time and just about unfits me for every thing, having trouble with house financing but will leave it with HIM and trust that every thing will come out alright.

Feeling lots better today, hope can go on and do GOOD.

For to assist here and there toward better thinking better feelings in the bodies and hearts and minds of my fellow man is my one great desire.

I am sure that you are having a hard time adjusting yourself after the loss of your father. It is hard to have to give up those we love.

It is probable that my wife and I will come to the Congress June 28 or 30 this year. I shall let you know later. We both want to come, of course. Yes, I sent Mrs. [1391], Ala., copies of the booklets you mailed me some weeks ago. I met her in Selma Ala. one night not long since. It was at a materialization by Mrs. Ethel Post, medium, of Miami, Fla.

About the materialization - it was simply wonderful. You probably know that Mrs. Post is nationally famous as a materializing medium and trumpet medium. My wife’s niece was materialized. It was indeed a revelation to me. My wife’s nephew, […], brother of the deceased niece […], was with us. We all three talked to the form which came out, standing within three feet of it, and the form certainly did look like […], it talked like her and acted like her; we three agreed on that. Numbers of other dead people were materialized. I know you have attended one of these seances, so will not tell you more about this one.

I do not so much want to see you and your family. Please do me the favor to write me in detail about some of your experiences in talking to the dead and in seeing them. And, will you please write me about any other experiences? I am particularly anxious to get full reports on your experiences in talking to and seeing the dead.

I am about the same. Do not seem to get better, but I still have faith. Most of my trouble seems to be located in the lower part of my abdomen and lower part of my back - soreness, stiffness, weakness. I want to ask again that you pray for me. I feel there is still some work for me to do for others.

R12. 5/10/37 EC’s letter to [1196]:

Dear Mr. [1196]:

Thanks for yours of the 6th, we will be looking for you at this Congress, would like to have the opportunity to talk with you on many subjects, certainly the information helps out with the property, and that you have the development there worthy of the time and money you have spent on same.

Yes, had scarcely realized how much I had relied on my Father for advice and counsel, miss him more very day, but feel assured all is well with his soul.

Have met Mrs. Post here in Norfolk, she was here for some time a year or so ago, heard many speak very lovely of Mrs. Post, a very lovely lady to meet, have not seen any of her work, other than just speaking from the stage.

May I ask is Mrs. […] any relation to Mr. King Pharr, whom I used to know some years ago? Dead now I believe, and it was Mrs. Pharr who taught me how to make preserves and jellies, that many feel I excel so in, would you and Mrs. […] like to see a sample of same would be glad to send you some, I like to give them away to those that like such things. Think you would find them pretty good.

About materialization, many spiritualists tell me that I am a spiritualist but will not acknowledge same, suppose I have tried to follow the scripture so long from an angle perhaps, not so many view same, that I like to think of it as spirituality and not so much as spiritism. Yes have had many experiences of materialization, really large groups of people, among the first of the groups, and a most definite experience was something like this:- At Sunday school one morning, I being teacher, I saw a whole section of the church fill with people - departed ones - many, great many I knew in this life many in fact most of them had been of the Jewish faith, more than one of them Rabbi’s none of them spoke, but all listened to the lesson as I tried to give it for nearly thirty minutes, - now they were just as clear as had I been looking and live people all dress in their own style of dress of their day and office. [See 294-155.]

Anothersingly [?] - a young lady whom I had known for years, who had been dead possibly fifteen years. Awoke one evening [1935-1936?] with a rapping on the window, realized it was some one, arose slipped on my dressing gown, went to the window and asked who is it and a very distinct voice she answered, giving me her nick name, telling me she wished to talk with me, to come down and let her in, which I did. Talked with her just as would any friend, for an hour, a very natural voice. A very real personality. There are many questions I wonder that I did not ask, but gather from the ones we did discuss so long as the personality remains, there is little difference from the plane we live on here, except one is free gradually from the physical habits, physical ills, physical desires. Only by and at the compliance of divine laws are we rid of any material desire. For the gift of eternal life is of GOD and it is a compliance with his laws we become aware of same. Not use as an abuse of them. For the Christ said “Ye would have not known sin except I had come in the flesh” what does that mean that by his resurrection from the dead, all that seek the way through Him may not know death, in the spiritual sense, as oblivion, I might have thought this experience just a dream it was so real, except that the Secy, here [Yes, this is true. GD] was still at work in the Office here in the home, saw me go down, heard me open the door, and heard voices during the time she was here. Have seen the same lady several times in groups, of these we talked that evening. There is too much about the conversation, to record it all here, but when see you will repeat it all for you in more detail if you wish, it is the exception possibly that proves a rule for us at all times in this material world. [See Par. R14 below] Remember one of the writes of the New Testament tell us, all are not endowed with the same gifts, but some one some another according to, the use we have put our opportunities here on earth. But as he says, “Try ye the spirits, they that acknowledge that Christ has come in the flesh, are of God” and we hinder often by trying to call them, when they need our prayers, and our correct living. Not that they may not come to us, but they come for help, as oft as they give help. Isn’t it true in every day life, is life any different. LIFE is God, and He is the same yesterday, today and forever. What did Samuel say when Saul asked for help. Read that very carefully.

Another experience, a most definite, and a most disconcerting to me. Some years ago I knew an official of the Western Union very well, very close to him for a number of years, we often discussed the here after, many phases of it, in the light of what had been given us in the readings. We often discussed the possibility of communication after death, of how and why and all that, and agreed that the first to go would try to communicate with the other, not saying however any secret word or message, for felt from our close discussions we would know without a doubt. Some years ago he died, in his last letter for her he had been a long sufferer which will make a story in its self if you wish to hear it some time - but in several of his last letters - and remember he was a Minister’s son - he said he believed it was all a myth about communication, that this life was all. We just disintegrated and became a part of the all. Well he had been dead possibly three years when one evening I was alone here in my living room listening to the Radio, when I suddenly realized a my friend was sitting there before me listening also - he turned to me and spoke. (Sweet hour of prayer was being sung at the time) saying Cayce, that is the only life to live, be assured there is the survival of the personality, I know, and want to say many things that to you if I am permitted. And he has, he left two small boys, a young wife

• and there were many things that to many might be questioned. Yet, his understanding has grown, but from losing the earthly desires, and adhered to the spiritual. Again I say SPIRITUALITY. [See above experience also recorded under 4905-70, Par. R90, R91.]

Well I might go on and on, telling you of such experiences, some even more spectacular in their nature, but more and more I say they are our assurances not our guides, we have the one guide, in Jesus of Nazareth, who became the Christ through the willingness to live life, earthly, and show us the way to God. His spirits then help, as we help them, the law is simple. “As ye do it unto the least of these my brethren, ye do it unto me.”

Do hope you and Mrs. […] will soon be feeling better a lot better and that you will both be with us at the Congress. Let me hear when ever you have the time.

CONSCIOUS CLAIRVOYANCE

Edgar Cayce had many unusual experiences of a psychic nature during his waking state. The following incident provides some helpful comparative data.

While living in Selma, Alabama, Mr. Cayce employed a young woman who retouched negatives and acted as a general helper in his studio. She worked for him for three or four years.

This young woman died of a throat infection.

Years later Edgar Cayce was awakened one night from a sound sleep by hearing a voice calling him. He recognized the voice of his former assistant.

She requested that he come downstairs and permit her to come in and talk with him.

He dressed and left his second floor bedroom and went to the front door on the first floor. The young woman was at the door and came in when he opened it.

While he could see Miss Y distinctly, Mr. Cayce could see through her the objects behind her. He could hear her voice and she apparently was able to hear him.

Miss Y. told Edgar Cayce a strange story.

She explained that she was now living with her mother and father in a home. She said she had been quite ill with her throat infection, but that recently she had gotten much better as the doctor had begun treating her again after a period of absence. (The physician who had been treating her when she died, also died some years later. Apparently this doctor had begun treating her again after passing over to the other plane and had helped release her for further development. It is also interesting to note that at the time of this experience Edgar Cayce did not know about the death of this physician.)

She stated that her father was away from home a great deal and promised to take her with him on his trips when she became a little stronger.

While visiting the studio in Selma she heard someone mention that Edgar Cayce was now living at Virginia Beach, and after considerable trouble she had located the Beach and had come to visit him.

Mr. Cayce explained to this young woman just what had happened to her, and gave her suggestions for continuing her development. He did not see her again. Miss Y. had no consciousness of time or space as we know it. She had evidently continued her suffering after passing on and had gradually overcome it with the help of the physician who continued his work with her after his death. She was being guided by her parents and prepared gradually for further development.

This is not an unusual experience. Such stories are coming through many different channels. However, this experience does provide us with examples of certain points already made in information from the readings. Miss Y. was still troubled by a physical ailment. She retained her memory. Love was playing an important part in her development. Time and space had become only relative factors. She had retained her personality.
