This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of January, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1861], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. GC: You will have before you the entity [1861], …, Va. You will give a mental and spiritual reading for this entity; giving direction and guidance for attaining the greatest possible mental and spiritual development in this present incarnation. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1861].

3. In giving an analysis of the mental and spiritual desires of this entity, [1861], it is well that there be given something of the premise from which the reasoning for the entity would be gained, - or that there may be a more comprehensive understanding of the suggestions as would be made for this entity at this time.

4. First, - one finds self in a three-dimensional plane of consciousness; all that may be known materially is subject to that dimension.

5. That as may be comprehended in the mental may reach into a fourth-dimensional plane, - as the variation between a book with its dimensions and the contents of same, which may be of a mental reaction entirely.

6. Yet the spiritual import is the premise, as to what is the ideal, purpose and intent of same, - as to the effect the contents of such a book would have upon an individual entity.

7. Or, one in the material phases of his experience draws mentally upon comparisons of things, conditions, experiences, through the mental faculties of the body; and his reaction is still dependent upon the ideal he holds.

8. Then, the purposes for which an entity enters a material experience:

9. As indicated, the entity comes from without - or from an unknown quantity - into, first, that of desire, association, and conceptive activity with mental and physical growth, developing into a channel through which the spiritual import manifests.

10. Then its purpose is that such an entity, as this - [1861], may make manifest the spiritual influence in a material world.

11. Each soul was in its first division from the Godhead to be a companion with that force, that influence, that purpose. Hence the purpose is to grow in grace, knowledge, understanding, for the indwelling in that PRESENCE.

12. Hence all that manifests in the material world is a shadow of that which is of mental or spiritual import. And as to whether or not each division in mind, matter, becomes sufficient to be indwelling, or at an at-onement with the Creative Force, is dependent upon the application of the purposes and desires of such force in its material association in materiality.

13. Then, there are imports, - as the mental attributes, the material attributes, the spiritual attributes. GROWTH depends upon whether all influences or desires, or hopes, are of a creative or spiritual source. And that pronouncement or injunction, “TODAY THERE IS SET BEFORE THEE GOOD AND EVIL, LIFE AND DEATH,” is applicable in the experience of each and every entity.

14. In the experiences of this entity, - owing to its super-sensitiveness to beauty, to rote, to harmony, these warnings would be an important point in the experience:

15. Do not confuse rote, or mental growth, with spiritual import. It is true that the combination of H20 constantly produces water. It is true that the bow upon the string at a certain tone constantly produces C, or another note, to which the attunement is made to a first cause, - as the H20 is to a first cause. But it is not ALWAYS water that is wanted with hydrogen and oxygen. Neither is it always C that is desired upon the tune or tone of the instruments.

16. Thus there are influences and forces, or sources, from which the supply has come, and does and must flow. Yet these activities through the mental processes will CONSTANTLY repeat, or give the same condition, if they are applied again and again.

17. Then, the knowledge of the existence of such is the mental process, but the application of the source of each of these, - as a premise in the experience, - is that there is the willingness - of that which is the spirit, at an at-onement with the First Cause, or God, or Creative Force - to be used as that force of hydrogen or oxygen, or as the bow, to produce that as the Creative Force would have signified or manifested in a material world, - or constant desire, purpose, will, to be at an at-onement with the Creative Forces in its associations, in its dealings, in its relationships to its fellow men.

18. A pattern here, too, has been made manifest in a way, a manner, in which each soul, each entity, may find its way. And He IS the way, the truth, the light. He manifested life, in a material body; taking on the desires of flesh, and yet using the mental attributes to keep body, mind, with all the attributes of each, in the full accord, the full attunement to be, do, that as would make for EACH soul the more perfect, the more excellent, way.

19. Then, that life, that activity, is AS the Ideal, AS the Pattern. And with those promises that have been made in and through that life as exemplified, one may find one’s self in the full accord with the divine purpose for which the self entered this material experience. Thus may it manifest among its fellow men that same pattern as did He, - who gave, “BE YE PERFECT, EVEN AS MY FATHER IN HEAVEN IS PERFECT. ABIDE IN ME, AND I IN THEE, THAT MY FATHER AND I WILL COME AND ABIDE WITH THEE.”

20. Thus may an entity, THIS entity, find - in the pattern as is set there - the answer to each and every question that may arise. For He IS the Maker, the beginning, the end, the purpose, the desire; and not as one out of the world, but not OF the world, though IN the world, even as He.

21. These principles, these tenets, these truths, made a part of thy life, thy experience, thy associations, will show the way. For, “Inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of thy brethren, ye do it unto thy Maker.”

22. With this consciousness, the entity arrives at that awareness of being at an at-onement. And when there are those conditions arising in the experience, in its attuning of that which brings harmony in the unison of music, or in the harmony of the unison of purpose and desire of one towards another, though they may be of different bodies, the desires and purposes produce an attunement; even as the bow upon the string, - they are of different sources, yet they bring the harmony that becomes creative in its generic force in the experience of the individual, or become inharmonious by the lack of being at an at-onement or in attune with that necessary for the harmonies in life, in association, in activities.

23. These become then as the EXPERIENCES of the entity, that give the insight into the ways and manners in which it may so apply itself in its daily relationships to others, as to to bring greater hope, greater desire, greater purposefulness for harmonious forces into the experiences of others.

24. Ready for questions.

25. (Q) How may I bring into activity my pineal and pituitary glands, as well as the Kundalini and other chakras, that I may attain to higher mental and spiritual powers? Are there exercises for this purpose, and if there are, please give them. (A) As indicated, first so FILL the mind with the ideal that it may vibrate throughout the whole of the MENTAL being!

Then, close the desires of the fleshly self to conditions about same. MEDITATE upon “THY WILL WITH ME.” Feel same. Fill ALL the centers of the body, from the lowest to the highest, with that ideal; opening the centers by surrounding self first with that consciousness, “NOT MY WILL BUT THINE, O LORD, BE DONE IN AND THROUGH ME.”

And then, have that desire, that purpose, not of attaining without HIS direction, but WITH His direction, - who is the Maker, the Giver of life and light; as it is indeed in Him that we live and move and have our being.

26. (Q) Is there any method whereby I might develop such faculties as a perfect memory; intuition, telepathy, astral projection, and healing of others, as well as myself? (A) All healing of every nature comes from the DIVINE within that body, or the body applied to such methods or manners of healing.

The attuning of self, - not as to that this or that may be accomplished. But remember, as has ever been given of old, ALL manner of expression, all life, emanates from one source - God! God in thyself; not as “I will, but as Thou wilt.”

Let that be the purpose, the import, the intent, the DESIRE; and that which is needed for the bringing of its abilities and faculties of every nature in attunement will be done.

And thus give off, in harmonious accent, that as will be pleasing in His sight, - the purpose for which each soul enters a material experience.

27. (Q) How may I best be used as a channel to be of mental and spiritual assistance to others? (A) First by finding self and self’s relationship, and the Creative Forces being manifested in thy daily activity, thy daily speech, thy daily conversation, thy daily convocation with thy fellow men; in that each activity is as UNTO the Lord!

Dear [1861]

Can’t tell you how happy I was to have yours of the 12th and to know you are feeling better. Was quite uneasy about you

• as it was not practical for us to undertake the reading when your brother first called. Glad tho, that you are better - all praise to HIM the Giver of all good gifts - hope you keep on the improve and have no further trouble.

Am pleased to be sure to know that Miss [2072] was pleased with her reading. You know, I like her [1861], and am looking forward to meeting her - just feel as if had known her all my life.

Hope you will find something to muse and study over in your last reading - something that will be very much worthwhile for you. Of course, there is little I can add at present

• for the response to a reading of this kind is within your own self and if that is there, then you will be able to make a lot out of. Let me know what you think after you have studied it over a bit.

R2. 2/13/40 Mr. [1861]‘s ltr. to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce

I have wanted to write you you since my Mental and Spiritual Reading of a month ago, but so many things piled up after I got over my sickness that I am way behind in my correspondence.

However, I have had some time to give more careful thought to the contents of the latest reading and I find that it pretty much reflects the views that I have held for some years. I believe I can look back and see that the greatest things for good that have taken place in my life have resulted from my meditation upon the will of God flowing thru me. Whenever I have asked something from God in the spirit that He will give it to me in accordance with His will. I have always received the answer which was best for me, I have long felt that the mistake that people make in their prayers is in asking God to give you something and telling Him how you want to do it.

Let me illustrate by telling you that I asked God to give me perfect sight. I tied no strings to my petition. He brought you to me. I asked God to give me the right kind of wife. He sent me clear across the continent to find her. I have learned to rely upon Him to solve problems that come up in my daily life and these problems all work out in the best possible way. Yes, I think I pretty well know the meaning in the words of Christ, “It isn’t I that doeth these things, but the Father”. And this is why I believe in your work, because you know this truth even better than I do. In short, I should say that both Life and Mental Readings have served to give me the satisfaction of a verification of those things that I try to practice in my inner life.

If my present plans materialize and I believe they will, [2072] and I will be married soon after June 10th, which is the closing date of my school. We plan to spend as much of the summer in New York as necessary to follow out your Reading on my eyes. Of course, I will want a recheck from you shortly before we go to New York. [2072] has asked me to ask you if you have authority to perform marriage ceremonies, as she says she would rather have you do that than anyone else, and, of course, I feel the same way, too.

Dear [1861]

Glad to have yours of the 13th - it was very natural that was anxious to hear from you after your last reading and thank you very much for your letter. It is one of the very finest letters have ever received in my whole life! Am glad to hear and have you express yourself as you have; you are exactly right - so many pray God for this and that, but insist on trying to tell Him just how it should be done.

Yet, the Master ever gave “Thy will Father not mine.” Want to thank you and [2072] for the great honor you have indicated, but I am not qualified to perform such a ceremony - would that I were for this occasion - if at no other time - for am sure this is to be one of the very finest associations that has been for many a day. And do hope that you will come here together for the reading before you go to N.Y. Will you let me give that to you as your Wedding gift to each of you? Hope you will, don’t ever like to say if. IF, in any thing that I offer, but I do wish very much to see and talk with you two together, so may I make that a provision.

Mrs. [1770] wrote me of meeting [2072] and what a lovely person she was and she felt that would find her one of “our group” as she put it.

Thank you again [1861] and all praise to Him, that I may have been the channel to bring you some measure of assurance and hope.

R4. 5/8/40 He referred Miss [2205] for her Life Reading.

R5. 5/23/40 Mr. [1861]‘s ltr. to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce

Owing to the various things, we have not been able to set an exact and definite date in June for our wedding before now. However, it looks now that it will be somewhere around June 20th and we are hoping to come down to the Congress on our way to New York.

Knowing how busy you will be during the Congress session, I thought I had better write to ask if you would be good enough to give the recheck reading for my eyes some time before the Congress. If anything happened that we could not get to any of the Congress, we will most certainly make a bee line from New York to let you see the results obtained in my eyes. In fact, we will do this whether or not we see you before going to New York for treatments, for I not only want you to be the first to know all about what happened, but [2072] has expressed a wish to go to see you at the earliest possible opportunity after she gets to Virginia. Indeed, I shouldn’t be surprised if she would like to see you even before she sees me, and, if she did, who could blame her for that?

Knowing how kind you are in making us the proposition of a wedding gift of the reading if we came down to get it, I feel some hesitancy in asking you to give the reading under any other conditions and I wonder if I hadn’t better send you the usual amount for it. If you think I should, just say so and you know I wouldn’t think one whit less of you, for we are too good friends to ever let such a thing as this make a difference.

If you do give the reading before we can see you, I wonder if it would be impertinent to ask how many weeks the treatments will take so that I will know better how to make my plans financially and otherwise.

I know you will be interested in knowing that I am getting much from my Mental and Spiritual Reading. I really feel that I have derived more from this than either of the other two readings, tho I don’t mean to underrate the value of the others. For example, by following your suggestion of “Thy will and me”, I lie flat of my back every day and put my consciousness right into my eyes and I am amazed every time I do it at what happens.

After putting my consciousness here, I just let everything go and offer no resistance to whatever takes place.

A very strong vibration will begin to work in my eyes and then the lids are pushed inwards until my balls are far back in the head. After this, a force in the top of my head will pull my neck up in a straight line and a violent movement takes place in my neck from side to side. My breathing is regulated by the force within me during all of these things and I have seen the breath held in for several minutes; while an enormous pressure is exerted in my throat and the back of my head. My whole head seems to be in a vice. When the breath comes out, a state of relaxation follows. Then something takes hold of my forehead and pulls that way up. This morning for the first time something went on in my upper cervicals. There was a pressure back there and I was made to hold my head in certain positions for certain lengths of time. I could tell you many more details, but I have told you enough to show you what I mean.

The result of this is that my eyes have become much more steady and I am able to focus them better than ever. I want to emphasize that I do none of the things that have been described of my own will and that I am conscious of being in the grip of a force far more powerful than I am. Indeed, I have tried to do some of these things myself and I found that I couldn’t. So, do you see what a lesson I am learning from what you have given me.

I should like to draw the following two conclusions from the readings I have received from you:

1. The Physical Reading showed me how my eye trouble could be caused by conditions that were not present in the eyes themselves.

2. The Life and Mental and Spiritual Readings have given me the spiritual power to overcome the eye and other problems.

Should you care to quote what I have said about the Mental and Spiritual Readings or any other of the readings either in print or verbally, you must feel free to do so. But, I thought you would be especially interested in results obtained from the Spiritual Reading, as I understand relatively few of these have been given. In addition to this, I want to be a living example of what is being done thru you after my eyes are fixed up and will not hesitate to aid any who come seeking and to show them how they may be helped thru you. Indeed, [2072] and I feel that this will be our chief joy.

Please excuse the errors in this letter, for my typewriter seems to be on the blink and I will have to take some time out and get it straightened out. With kindest regards and hoping to see you soon,

Dear [1861],

Have yours of the 23rd. Now, am most anxious to help [1861], and which ever way that will suit you the best and suit the convenience of both of you will suit me. But, do wish to give the reading which ever the way you have it - whether you are here or not. Am just selfish enough tho to wish if at all possible, that you both be present when this reading is given. Neither of you have seen a reading given, and just how near and dear each of you have grown to be to me, wonder if you will ever know. Do wish to meet [2072] the first opportunity, and for her to be present also at your reading to me will be just the loveliest thing ever! So, if at all practical, do hope you can plan to come by here on your way to N.Y., at least, and have the reading. Assure you it will not interfere in any way with the Congress meeting. Just wish you could come here and be married here at the Congress, that would be fine. But know you have your own plans about that; so don’t let that bother you. But you have it just which ever way you would like to have it. Will be glad to make it to suit the convenience of each of you.

Thank you, [1861], for telling me of your experiences with your Mental and Spiritual reading, that is just marvelous, and all praise to HIM! Have recently had some wonderful experiences with the work the Drs. you go are to in N.Y. and am sure each will be more anxious to meet you and to give you of their best for health and happiness.

So you let me know - and if it suits you best to have the reading soon now will make the appointment; or if it is practical for you to come by here that will be fine - and no matter which day even during the Congress it will be just the finest time ever! But would like for each of you to be present at this reading.

Dear Mr. Cayce

[2072] and I do so much appreciate your wanting us to be there for the reading, and, if you are so willing to give us your valuable time without thought of your own convenience, it certainly is little enough for us to do to make any amount of effort to come down there.

So far as we can tell now, we will be married on June 19th here at my home and will get to Va. Beach in time for the opening of the Congress, as [2072] is most anxious to attend at least a portion of this and I hope we can remain for the entire time.

Again expressing our deepest appreciation of your great kindness and thoughtfulness and hoping that you and Mrs. Cayce have been greatly helped by your recent vacation,

P.S. I hate to trouble you with this, but I haven’t stayed at Virginia Beach for so many years that I have no idea where to find a conveniently located place to stay. If you should happen to know of a reasonably priced apartment with bedroom, bath and kitchenette I certainly would appreciate your letting me know about it. We don’t have a car and will have to be walking everywhere. That’s why I wanted some place in a convenient location.
