HLC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions which he has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: (In going back over years from present ” - ‘35 - yes, the changes - ‘33 - ” etc., on back to birth date.)
-
Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [1861].
-
In giving the interpretation of the records as we find them, a great deal might be said as respecting individual experiences or sojourns - as well as the great diversity of latent abilities.
-
Not so much is manifested of the emotions, yet the motion or vibration is an element or influence that arises to the motion, which is at times construed by the entity as being physical motion when it arises more from a latent spiritual emotion.
-
The entity is an Atlantean, and of the first water!
-
Hence we will find an extremist - when this is judged from the abilities of activity, or the activative forces as related to the necessary exertion of self towards an activity or emotion.
-
At times the entity is considered by others as being a laggard, or as one “putting off;” inclined to do such more in relationship to self than to others.
-
The entity becomes very emotional as a “sense” of duty and obligation in relationships to others; and at times - arising from a mental study - overenthusiastic, and to the disturbance at times even of the closer associates.
-
These are what may be called the influences, but without respect to what has been or may be done; or they are the composite of that character of emotion which arises from the astrological aspects as well as the material or earthly sojourns.
-
Thus these interpretations are given with the desire and purpose that the experience for the entity may be of a helpful nature such that it may gain something of a better concept as to the purposes for which each soul enters a material sojourn; and enable the entity to give stress, credence, - yea, faith, - where such needs to be given, and to leave the non-essentials to that of time and space.
-
To judge in such requires oft a self-analysis. And to analyze there must be, in a material experience rather, an ideal from which comparisons may be drawn. For it is oft in the mental world conceded that an individual or entity only knows or realizes, or becomes aware, through comparison; or through experience as may be paralleled with comparisons of others, or self, - and thus either mentally or materially experienced.
-
In giving the astrological aspects, these - as may be indicated - are for this entity at certain periods of the entity’s experience more of an influential nature; or the entity is in that realm or position of the earth in its path through space, or about the sun, to be more in attune with those environs.
-
Hence, as for the close friendships, or the life companions, - those who were born in December or January, OR February provided it is in the early portion of same, would and do make much better companions for the entity than those born in the early spring or summer or early fall.
-
As will be indicated also, - Uranus, Jupiter and Venus become the ruling planets, or the ruling influences.
-
Hence we find Jupiter the more powerful (for this entity) through those periods indicated, - as well as Venus and Uranus.
-
In certain periods, then, it will be found, the entity finds it much easier in its activities or labors; which should be ever in that field of music, or the musing upon the vibrations in every form as in relationships to man’s welfare, - whether it be for the healing influences (as certain types or characters of music are), or the vibratory forces from the low or the high and quite frequent vibrations of electrical energies that may be as an application through elements or natures that would be of beneficial effect in the physical being of individuals.
-
As indicated also, there will be periods when the entity would be the greater lover through the fall and winter, and yet summer would find the entity rather indifferent. These are the extremes.
-
Hence there must be the exerting of self the greater in those periods when the influences are the greater for bringing into material manifestation those activities, those tendencies, those little kindnesses that indicate the real tense (or feeling) had toward others.
-
The sojourns in the material plane, as may be indicated, have at certain periods been rather close or quick, again very far apart - much as might be indicated by the very temperament, or the emotional temperament of the entity in its material, mental or physical activities towards individuals, conditions or things.
-
As to the sojourns, then:
-
Before this the entity was in the earth during the period of the latter portion of the War between the States.
-
Then the entity was among those born in that period of the disturbances in the minds and in the experiences of those who were fostering what has oft been termed the Lost Cause.
-
Hence we find the entity in the present oft feeling very STRONGLY as respecting the REAL causes which had to do with the differences of opinions of peoples in that particular period; and able to judge or see or argue either phase of the many mooted questions of that experience.
-
The name then was B. A. Seay, - and the entity as we find journeyed to other lands from its birth or nativity; and there may be found the records of the entity among those of a Masonic order in the western portions of Kentucky, for there the entity spent the latter portion of its sojourn during that experience. [Historically documented, Par. R11.]
-
The entity gained through that sojourn; not in the earthly possessions but in the abilities WHICH ARE MANIFESTED in the entity’s experience in the present, - of the being able to meet every character of physical or mental condition with a trust in a force without itself, - or the Creative Influences.
-
And these in all phases of the entity’s associations and activities, and in all of the plannings for future endeavor in this material plane, should be the more often taken into consideration.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the French land, during those periods when there was that activity in which many were drawn, - not only because of the purpose and desire for the protection of a cause, but “because others did so.”
-
There we find the entity especially in the periods during what is known as the great French Crusade, in which the entity joined.
-
The entity then acted in the capacity of the recruiter, as might be called in the present, or the individual that aroused those of all walks of life for a definite service in which they would forsake those things of a material nature for a spiritual, or mental and spiritual cause.
-
Then the name was Amee Richeleu. In the experience there were gains, there were losses; but from same in the present we will find the desire to know much of the inward workings of various groups or organizations that are perfected in the affairs of individuals in various walks of life, for definite purposes towards furthering their causes in fields of activity.
-
This is true whether pertaining to clubs, social or political groups, or as to organizations relating to the activities of unions or as to denominational activities in the field of mental or spiritual development, or the services of various organizations as they may function among the affairs of individuals or groups.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Arabian or Persian land, as now known, in the “city in the hills and the plains.”
-
There we find the entity came as a dweller from among the Persian peoples; given to what would be termed activities of a barbaric nature in its early experience. For the entity brought persecution to those of other tribes or other beliefs, by the blinding with hot irons.
-
Such activities the entity forsook in those experiences when there was the awareness of the activities of the teacher in the “city in the hills,” - that teacher who gave those interpretations to the peoples as pertaining to that as would bring greater hope to those disappointed or discouraged, either in body or in mind.
-
And the entity became the leader in the musical instruments that were a part of the healing through those periods.
-
Hence, as indicated, those fields of activity in the present in which the entity may be the musician - especially of stringed instruments, or an individual applying the higher vibrations in electrical applications for healing, or the combinations of these - would be the fields of service in which the entity may find greater contentment, and an outlet for the emotions, the longings within, as may be experienced by the entity in the present sojourn.
-
The name then was Ab-del-uha.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Atlantean land, during those periods when there were the attempts to reconstruct the activities and purposes of those peoples, after the second of the upheavals or the breaking up of the land or the continent.
-
The entity was among the sons of the Law of One; and the applications materially of the entity were in the use of some of nature’s forces or influences, in those elements known as electrical forces, or electricity in the present.
-
Hence all such are of interest, and for such activities the entity’s MENTAL self has an affinity.
-
The name then was what would be called in the present Oumpph.
-
As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain, and how:
-
First, - analyze thy purposes, thy desires, thy hopes, thy fears also. Are these in keeping with that which is thy ideal, - mentally, spiritually?
-
Then, act in the relationships as one with another of thy friends, thy associates, thy enemies, in such a way and manner that such ideals may be manifested in their experience also; using Him - who IS the way, the truth, the light - as thy Pattern, as thy Ideal.
-
Much may be accomplished, materially, as well as the finding of peace and harmony in such measures that the experiences of life will be more and more joyous to thee.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should I marry the girl [2072] to whom I am engaged? (A) As we find, if the ideals of each are compatible, it may be made to be an experience worthy of acceptation.
-
(Q) What can I do to insure my economic future and what line of work should I follow, and how shall I proceed if I am to change from what I am now doing? (A) As has been indicated, the field of service lies in music, - or music as combined with the application of high vibrations to human ills.
Teaching - or practicing - or giving to others the greater concept of the purposes of music in their experience - is the way and manner to insure not only economic force and power, but mental and spiritual development.
Let the economic power, however, be NOT the first cause; let it rather be the RESULT of careful, purposeful consideration of the use of abilities given to each entity, each soul, - and be the RESULT of such application.
-
(Q) Would you advise a change from what I am now doing? (A) Not in the immediate. Let this come rather as an after effect of better physical and mental and SPIRITUAL abilities being developed within the purposeful life.
-
(Q) Will you explain what I could do to bring about an opportunity to get the eye treatments needed? (A) This has been indicated. Do that.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 12/5/39 Mr. [1861]‘s ltr. to HLC:
…, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce
I told you that I would write to you to ask some questions about my life reading. However, I have had more time to study it carefully and I find that there is far less need for further interpretation than I had at first thought.
However, I should like to say in connection with the 2nd question [1861-2, Par. 49-A] that was answered, that I am not primarily interested in making a great economic success or making a lot of money, but, rather, I am most interested in being of service to others in bringing them an understanding of the higher purposes of music. Therefore, I am more interested in what might be termed the teaching of the theoretical and philosophical and spiritual side of music than in teaching the playing of an instrument like the violin. As I am anxious to marry the girl to whom I am engaged, because she does come up to all of my ideals, I was naturally anxious to know whether my economic future would permit me to take such step. Now, may I ask if I am drawing a logical conclusion in assuming that I should not worry about this material matter of an economic future so long as I am trying to serve others in my present capacity and that this matter will take care of itself?
Please tell your father and mother and Miss Davis how much I did enjoy my visit with you on Sunday. Indeed, I felt that I was among real friends and it seemed as if I had known you all of my life.
Any words that I might employ to give written or verbal expression of my appreciation of both readings and their inestimable value to me would be totally inadequate and I only hope that I may some day be of service to you and the Association.
With kindest regards to you and the others,
Very cordially and sincerely yours, [1861]
R2. 1/3/40 See 2072-1, Par. 45-A saying Miss [2072] was [1861]‘s daughter in previous American incarnation, and his wife in Persian incarnation.
R3. 1/3/40 Mr. [1861]‘s ltr. to HLC:
My dear Mr. Cayce
I am so well pleased with the Life and physical readings that you have given me that I am writing to make an appointment for a Mental and Spiritual Reading.
I am asking that you kindly give me an appointment at some other time than Tuesday and Friday afternoons, as I have to teach on these days and also am teaching every morning. So I should appreciate it if you could make it on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday afternoon.
I am not at all sure as to the type of questions I may ask in such a reading as this. Incidentally, I wish the full reading. I am, therefore submitting the following questions and I should appreciate it very much if you would kindly let me know in your letter giving the day and hour of my reading as to whether or not I may ask such questions as these. In event that I cannot, would you be good enough to suggest the type of question that I may ask.
The questions follow:
How may I bring into activity my pineal and pituitary glands, as well as the kundalini and other chakras, that I may attain to higher mental and spiritual powers. Are there exercises for this purpose and if there are, please give them.
Is there any method whereby I might develop such faculties as a perfect memory; intuition, telepathy, astral projection, and healing of others, as well as myself?
How may I best be used as a channel to be of mental and spiritual assistance to others?
It has been a great pleasure to me to know that I have been able to make your personal acquaintance and I know that your friendship will mean much to me in the future.
With all good wishes for a successful and happy New Year,
Very sincerely yours, [1861]
R4. 1/5/40 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1861]:
Mr. [1861] …, Va.
Dear Mr. [1861]:
Have yours of the 3rd with enclosure and request for the Mental-Spiritual reading, thank you. Am happy indeed to know that you are pleased with the other readings, and sincerely trust will be equally pleased with this. Usually these are the most satisfactory readings of all, to those Spiritually minded.
The questions you have suggested [See Par. R3 above] are well in line keeping with such readings and should bring you some enlightenment - if there are others do not hesitate to submit those also. There is usually more time for questions in such information than some others.
The time given you for this, is Saturday afternoon the 13th
- hope that will be convenient for you - please let me know.
The reading for your friend in Cal. [2072] was most interesting. Am hoping to meet you together some of these days. Was very kind of Mrs. [1770] to bring you down - a real joy and pleasure to know you personally. Hope you will make Va. Beach a place you will visit often, and you must come to our next Congress and play for us.
Hoping to be of a real service
Sincerely Edgar Cayce

R7. 1/10/40 HLC’s ltr. to Mr. [1861]:
Mr. [1861] …, Va.
Dear Mr. [1861]:
I hope that by this time you are improving and that you will soon be in normal health again. We were concerned to learn of your illness.
Please let us hear from you as soon as is practical regarding the results of the treatments suggested and the analysis of the case. Your brother did not tell me anything about your condition, nor did the telegram indicate the nature of the illness. [See 1861-3 Reports.]
In regard to answering your first question [See Par. R1 above] concerning the relation of spiritual development and economic factors let me quote the readings. “If any man will in live accordance with spiritual law as he understands it, he will have the right amount of this world’s goods be it much or little.” It is sometimes worse to have too much than too little. Such an attitude does not prevent the use of common sense and compliance with natural laws, but it does prevent the focus upon the need for material things excluding all else.
We were all happy to meet you in our home. It was a pleasant surprise, one of those that makes our work so interesting.
I hope you will plan to be present for our Congress this summer.
Sincerely, [signed] Hugh Lynn Cayce

R11. 6/9/98 Letter to Jeanette Thomas this June 9th, 1998. Here is the info on B.A. Seay pronounced here locally as “C.” He was born July 24, 1847, Amelia Co., Va. Died Christian County, KY January 29, 1892. Married Hattie E. Word, born February 25, 1852, Died January 28, 1892. The great granddaughter of B.A. Seay has the following obituary found in her Grandfather’s (Volney B. Seay) belonging’s when he died. It is about his father Bernard A. Seay.
“BERNARD A. SEAY - The Color Bearer of the Fourteenth Virginia at Gettysburg - Died at his home in Christian County, Kentucky on the 29th of January, 1899, Bernard A. Seay, in the 51st year of his age. The deceased was a native of Amelia, and like thousands, at the close of the war, sought to better his condition among strangers. He was peculiarly fortunate in the selection of his home, in a community of Virginians, and their descendants still cherishing old Virginia traditions, manners and habits; who by hospitality and kindness, compensates in some measure for severance from home ties and youthful associations; while in turn, commended himself to their favor, by his genial sociable disposition, and integrity.
He filled a sucession of county offices, creditably in himself and acceptably to his constituents. He was happy in his domestic relations, following an affectionate wife to the grave, only a week preceeding his own death, after a married life of twenty years full of contentment and peace. He was an approved soldier of Pickett’s famous Virginia division, and Armistead’s brigade, serving from the secession of the State to Gettysburg; enduring privation, danger and disaster, with a laughing patient sufferance that disarmed fortune. But Gettysburg brought a crisis and catastrophe - The survivors of the old fourteenth are not likely to forget, that when following their tattered battle flag, borne aloft by him, they dashed themselves with unavailing gallantry, against the wall on Cemetery Heights, flag and bearer disappeared in the melee. As the account that a participant can give of such a fearful escalade must be meagre in the extreme, when questioned, some months since, it was found that his memory had retained only a few striking incidents. In the midst of confusion worse confounded, he found himself among the still smoking guns of a deserted battery, and while assisting to turn one of these he was captured and ended his campaigning in Point Lookout.
While the incidents of the struggle, in and around that “Woody angle” seemed scarcely more real than the baseless fabric of a vision, no time could blot from his memory the grand and glorious bearing of his old commander, when gallantly cheering his men “on to the deadly breach,” fell with his hat on, his sword point, on the spot, now shown to visitors as marking the limit of Confederate advance.
Some day it will fill the measure of a soldier’s fame, when men shall say: “He was with Pickett at Gettysburg,” and the descendants of Ensign Seay may claim a special distinction for him, that was at Armistead’s side when he fell; surrounded by Yankees in their own lines. Many a battered old fourteeth man, whose bivouac was brightened by his genial presence, whose toilsome marches were beguilded of weariness by his gaity and overflowing good humor, will drop a memorial tear on the grave of Bernard Seay. [Written by] J.H. Seay
Morven Amelia”
On page 4 of 1861-12 there is mention of the name John T. Stigge, well Gladys probably spelled this as she heard it but the name is John T. Stiger who was secretary. A listing of the members in 1882 lists B.A. Seay as a master mason. This lodge was at the Beverly Post Office which was in the store at Beverly. The lodge met upstairs. In 1912 John T. Stiger was listed as a fellow craft, and later as a Stewart and teller.
Hope this helps, [signed] D.D. Cayce
