This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 25th day of January, 1941, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1942], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. HLC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer any questions that I may ask:

2. EC: Yes - we have the body here, this we have had before.

3. As we find, there are many changes in the physical forces since last we had same here. Some have been towards the creating of a better balanced condition; others have become at times rather acutely disturbing.

4. In the present we find that the disorder arise primarily from the lack of the proper character of eliminations through the system, and an unbalancing between the eliminating systems.

5. For, some are attempting to eliminate where they should be carried off in the other systems.

6. This, to be sure, produces disturbances then to the superficial circulation in the form of the disorders there, as well as a disturbance to the respiratory system AND the lower hepatic circulation.

7. In making administrations for the beneficial conditions of the body at present:

8. We would have a series of that ordinarily called the Turkish Bath; though we would make some alterations as to the manners in which these would be administered; that is:

9. Rather than using the steam rooms, we would use the Dry cabinet Bath - AND this not raised too high, owing to the irregularity in the circulation between the heart and the liver; using a FUME with same. Preferably use Witchhazel as the fume, in the cabinet - either in an open container where water is boiled, or in some form that allows the steam from same to come over the body during the period of the heat - or the dry heat; thus becoming a part of the perspiratory activity to the system. If it is in an open container, then put about an ounce in a quart of water, you see. If it is used in a fume as from a croup cup or the like, put a teaspoonful to a pint or pint and a half of water.

10. We would take at least two of these during the first week, then in a week take another, then in ten days another; and then farther apart, dependent upon the reactions and the eliminations being set up.

11. The Fume Bath would be followed by the tub, you see. Use Pine Oil in the tub, of course.

12. Following the tub, there would be a thorough rubdown with an equal combination of Peanut Oil AND Olive Oil.

13. The absorption of these will not only stimulate better activity through the joints and the locomotory centers, but aid in establishing a better connection between the circulatory forces in the perspiratory eliminations and the deeper circulations that act towards the alimentary canal eliminations.

14. Also we would take the combinations of the vitamins A, D and G, or A, D and B-1. These - as a tonic, and as an aid to producing a better activity in the manner of assimilation, and as to resistances that may be built - will give the better influences for the body. These combinations are prepared by Sharp and Dohme in the correct proportions for these vitamins. Take one each day, especially through the winter months.

15. Do these, and keep regular with the better eliminations through alimentary canal - as the changes are wrought in the body; and we should bring the bettered conditions for this body of [1942].

16. Ready for questions.

17. (Q) Any suggestions regarding diet for the body? (A) These things are very well in the mind of the body itself, and these will be altered to meet the needs, as we find.

18. (Q) Any other suggestions at this time? (A) These as we find we would do for the present.

Dear Mr Cayce:-

Thanks for your favor of the 27th, inst and in reply would say that I feel that the reading given me January 25th will be of great service.

I will start within a day or so and take the baths and the Vitamins as recommended.

I am obliged to be away a great deal during the month of February. I hope that I may get well over the busy time during early March and would like to motor South at the end of that month and spend a few days with you, and on down to Florida.

If I can help on your filing system I shall be glad to do so.

Will go into the matter of my physical condition in a few days and advise you fully.

May the Infinite Power ever continue to give you health and strength for the continuance of your good work.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Mrs. […] and I have been away a great deal the past year on business.

We have just returned from Montreal and in going over correspondence recently received, I find your very welcome circular letter of January 8th [See 2678-1 Background].

You know that we are in accord with the thoughts expressed in your appeal, and we believe that the contact you make and the message received is of great benefit to all who know the Law surrounding contact with advanced souls.

We know the information you will receive in answer to the desire for guidance will bring forth TRUTH and it would appear that today it is badly needed and also much sought after.

Spiritual understanding put to practical use is the only path of evolution for the human race.

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Thanks for your letter of August tenth [in re SFG Book I] which was forwarded to me in Michigan where I have been thru July and August.

I believe your fifth paragraph [in Preface of SFG I] gives me the right idea concerning the views held by the Group members.

My search for God during the past ten years has covered a good deal of territory and thru various phases of the Psychic and direct contact I believe that ultimate progress for humanity will be through an understanding of the LAWS that govern the mental (Spiritual) side of life.

Such laws are basic and to the extent that the individual lives in harmony with such laws, one will automatically receive benefit in all ways.

To my mind the keynote of Progress is thru KNOWLEDGE. If we have KNOWLEDGE we have everything, for it includes LOVE, whereas Love does not necessarily include Knowledge.

To fully KNOW the LAWS includes the desire and so-called will power to love and obey.

I have known many people whose life seemed to be governed by mental or spiritual love, but they had little spiritual knowledge.

INDIA is a fair example of what can come to a Nation who apparently think and dwell on spiritual matters and neglect to cultivate a desire for KNOWLEDGE.

One would think that as a Nation they fear material thoughts and things, whereas more knowledge would raise them up into a higher realm or state of living so long as they kept spiritual knowledge and understanding in the lead.

It is no credit to the human race to live properly without temptation.

Before we can really advance in civilization and spirituality we must know GOOD from EVIL and overcome temptation.

I am looking forward to receiving and reading “THERE IS A RIVER.”

Your Father has given a great deal to humanity and we hope that he may be spared many more years to continue his work.

R4. 9/28/42 HLC’s letter to [1942]:

Dear Mr. [1942]

Thank you very much for your letter of September 10.

We appreciate your interest in the little book, “A Search for God.” I am glad that you have written me about it as you have.

The point of view which you express about the importance of Knowledge of spiritual law is very much in line with the purpose which we had in publishing the book and, in fact, is the basic propose which I believe to be behind the work of our Association. The very title which heads your stationery indicates that this is also the purpose and background for your activity.

I believe that you will agree with me that there are several different paths along which man moves in acquiring Knowledge. You and I, and many others in this country, are primarily concerned with the personnel of our own country in this particular era. While this allows for a pretty broad field of activity, certain distinct and natural limitations exist which must be met in planning the methods by which light may be focussed on paths which lie ahead or are possible for the various groups in our civilization here.

I am very interested in knowing just what your thoughts are on this subject and if you agree with me regarding the nature of these limitations; limitations which we rightly should call opportunities. For example, from my Father’s information, I gather that our country is faced with a peculiar mission and that our greatest dangers lie not from without but from within. Many Atlanteans are being incarnated in our country, bringing with them urges regarding specialization in many fields of material civilization. These fields of specialization may reach a new high in either constructive or destructive activity. Certainly, the activity will be extreme in either direction. As a nation, we are also concerned with certain principles which have been inculcated into the hearts and minds of the people regarding democratic principles. The world upheaval which we are going through will result in a new inter-racial point of view which will tax the best brains and hearts of our time. We can, I believe, depend upon the rising of certain leaders who can point the way but there is an important job to be done with the groups and masses who must choose one path or the other. Knowledge of spiritual law is the essential factor for spiritual growth and freedom from selfishness, the first and last barrier.

Perhaps I have rambled a bit here, but it was with the idea of making a point regarding the value and importance of the little book, “A Search for God.” I believe that it contains certain fundamental principles. They are simple and practical - for every day living. It is our hope that the spreading of such ideas will in some measure help answer the need which certainly exists in our country today.

Naturally, we are excited about my Father’s book, “There is a River.” I hope that when you have received your copy you will write me at some length regarding any suggestions which you may have for getting this book into the hands of just as many people as possible. It is an exciting, a challenging story, a practical demonstration of Love plus Knowledge. It will naturally do a great deal to make any reader stop and think of the vast possibilities that lie ahead in the realms of spiritual living.

R5. 21/42 [1942]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

You know of Stewart Edward White thru his writings of 20/40 years ago.

You will see by the early chapters how his interest was awakened and how he followed thru in a sincere desire to get at the underlying Truth of the Continuity of LIFE.

This he obtained thru his wife “BETTY” while she was in this earth plane and while in her next phase of development.

The experience related by Mr. White in the “BETTY” book and those that follow by the same author tie in with your experience as set forth in “THERE IS A RIVER” which I am reading now (272 pages.)

I believe you will enjoy reading the “BETTY” book. The other volumes referred to add little to the first one by him on the subject after 15/17 years investigation.

Please accept this book as our 1942 Christmas gift to you.

Let me take this opportunity to wish you and your family the pleasures of this Christmas season.

R6. 12/22/42 [1942]‘s letter to HLC:

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

At this time when convenient I would like to have a life reading.

Mrs. […] and I will leave here on the 27th., and will not return until about January 15th.

If you can give me a date while I am away it will be alright if I know a day or so ahead and can make arrangements to be in a definite place and can wire you where the place will be.

At this time having business in Boston & New York, we may find it an opportune time to go on down to Virginia Beach and spend a month or two. It depends on what sort of climate you have in February and March.

Would you be kind enough to write me and go into some detail as to the temperature during those two months and any other comments you wish to make.

The next point is whether you have apartments that we can live in comfortably during the period of our stay? If the hotels are open at all, I fear that they would be rather expensive. We prefer the quiet of our own rooms as well as our own cooking.

We might be able to rent a furnished cottage, providing of course that it has heating arrangements and fuel is obtainable.

If all this is not to be considered, what is the nearest town that has such accommodations? We will be in Boyne City, Michigan C/O NORTHERN SERVICE CO., on the 29th of December and until January 4th., and will appreciate a line from you there.

Just recently we met Mr. Walton Pyre. Understand he spent a few years at Virginia Beach, and says he knows you all very well. In what capacity was he connected with your Association?

Dear Mr. [1942]

Your letters of December 22nd are before me. They just arrived today and I am sending my answer air mail hoping that it will reach you in Boyne City.

First, regarding your order to Henry Holt and Company for additional copies of THERE IS A RIVER. Only a limited number of copies of the special edition was printed, but we still have copies on hand and will be glad to furnish you the number you desire. Considerable trouble is involved, as you can understand in handling these books, in autographing, etc., and we are not attempting a large sale. Therefore, it is difficult to establish a discount where a number of copies is desired.

The regular trade edition will be in all book stores about February 17th. This edition will be cheaper in price and will be handled by the publishers. You may wish to stock this regular edition.

Regarding your possible trip to Virginia Beach may I say that both my father and I would look forward to the opportunity of getting to know you and your wife better. There are many phases of the Association work, extracts from readings and general topics in the fields of psychical research which I would enjoy discussing with you. Let me assure you that I will do anything possible to make your stay here a pleasant one.

Normally we have a mild winter climate. Our worst weather comes with north east storms that blow themselves out in three to five days. For example we suffered form the unusual cold snap here several days ago, but today a top coat is not needed. Frankly, you would find March a better month than February, but in either there would be only spasmodic bad spells.

Due to the many war activities nearby Virginia Beach is crowded, but there is a constant turn-over as many people occupying cottages and apartments are navy and army people subject to call. I have called local apartment houses and asked them to notify me of openings around the first of February or first of March. Prices would vary according to the size of the apartment available. I would not recommend renting a cottage as the fuel problems would involve you in unnecessary bother.

I also approached one of the local hotels where many of our members and friends have found comfortable accommodations. At the Essex House, a water front, small, hotel the rates are twenty-five dollars per week for one person, including private bath and meals. You would be comfortable there. Cheaper accommodations in hotels might be found, but would not be as desirable.

There would be little possibility of finding anything in nearby towns for Norfolk and surrounding territory is one of the worst sections in the country right now.

Pleasant accommodations might be secured in a private home with two meals, not private bath, for about half the Essex House rate.

If you will advise me a little later just what you would like to do it will be a pleasure to secure the best possible arrangement for you.

My father has set Monday, January 11, 10.30 to 11.30 for your life reading. Enclosed you will find a blank which should be filled out and returned to us. The data regarding full name, birth date, etc., are needed. It would be helpful if you kept this period in meditation.

Mr. Walton Pyre [PH.D., Dramatics] was a member of the faculty of Atlantic University. You may remember the story of that unfortunate venture as described in THERE IS A RIVER. He has had one reading from my father. We remember him most pleasantly. While Mr. Pyre was interested in our work he was involved with the University matters and was not an active member.

Thank you for yours of the 21st and 22nd. Yes - had read “Betty” by Mr. White and enjoyed it very much, and do appreciate your sending me a copy to keep and read again and again.

Thanks also for your comment on - There is a River - the Author was very kind to the subject in many places, and possibly because of his own faith used many words that would possibly not be used by the subject to say the thoughts as are presented - often as has been in Christianity - the words of followers do not always convey the real expressed thought of the Master.

Will be happy to see you and talk with you. I realize I know so little, have read so little of the experience of others, will be good to talk with some one with such a world of experience.
