Store, Protestant) This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of October, 1927, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [2056].

1. GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [2056], who is located at …, and you will answer the questions regarding his associations and relations towards business.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [2056].

3. The associations with the body consciousness has brought about some very indefinite and unpleasant conditions with the body. These need correction, and - as has been given, the development (which is of the body consciousness) would bring about those conditions that would lead to those channels that will bring about the greater development for this body.

4. Now we find, while the body should seek other associations, this should not be hurried too fast. Rather seek to keep self in that at-oneness with better conditions, better elements, and let the conditions - as it were - WAIT for the time; for changes are taking place in the relations to the entity and the entity’s outlook and vision on associations with others, both in the POLITICAL and in the BUSINESS associations.

5. For the time being, then, the entity, the body, the mental forces may make a temporary connection either in New York or thereabout - BUT, as we find at the PRESENT, were the conditions kept in the trend that is now coming about, the body will fill a responsible place in connection with the associations of political power, rather than as SALESMAN or as representative of sales forces. While such a place may be taken at the PRESENT, keep self in a position to be able to answer to that call of service to others through the connections in a political way. Ready for questions.

6. (Q) Regarding his connection with […], in view of that which seems to be afoot, what should this body do relative to his association with this company? (A) Discontinue connection with any condition that to the body-consciousness is not in keeping with the best development of self, or of others. Never well to do evil or any underhanded thing that individuals or groups may benefit materially from same. Rather live that life that MERITS the best through SERVICE given to others - for the laborer is ever worthy of hire, and the Lord hath given and hath established that, “He that walketh in the way of the just shall receive the fat of the land.” Let the Lord be thy God, rather than position, power, or fame - for in service to Him may the heart find that satisfaction that comes with a life being WELL spent, and do not so act that self-condemnation enters into thine inmost self.

7. (Q) Just what type of work should he seek? (A) As given, any associations for the time being in a selling force, or in any proposition in or about the city - New York - may be made for the present. In keeping with these - do not be over anxious, but be in the position to accept or to fill a place that may be in the way of serving others in a POLITICAL way.

8. (Q) Give the body any other advice that would be in keeping for the best development for this body. (A) Keep thine face toward the light, and the shadows will not bring fright - for fear is the beginning of all undoing. Keep the heart singing, and the Lord will raise thee up to MAGNIFY His promises to men through service to thine fellow man, for he that lends to the Lord lays up a store in that realm where thieves do not break through nor steal. Keep thine ways open, above censure, and NEVER censure self.

R1. 1/3/28 [2056]‘s letter to EC:

My Dear Mr. Cayce;-

Well things have been happening as you predicted. Yesterday I was unanimously elected president of the Common Council of the City of … The republican organization hated to do it, it was a very bitter pill for them to swallow, but at least it was better than starting off with a row, or the possibility of a defeat. We will probably never know how the vote would have gone but I was assured of 4 and that would have tied the vote & thrown it to the Mayor to decide. Public opinion was so strong however that he didn’t dare vote for the organization choice. The people upon whom he had to depend for support were insistent upon my election. At the eleventh hour therefore they saved their faces by having their candidate withdraw & he nominated me. He in turn was elected vice president.

The wonderful part of it all, to me, was the fact that I didn’t have to work for the election, didn’t ask anyone to support, vote or work for me. I feel greatly honored, for the better class of citizen did the job. It shows the faith in me, & it will be a hard job to live up to their expectations.

When you come to New York I would like to have you give a life reading on [2060] [son] and if we can also arrange it a reading on matters political so that we will be working along right lines; for you know I am MOST anxious to accomplish things, only they must be for the best.

My dear Mr. [256]

We enclose herewith the information gotten respecting the boy [See 2060-1, a Physical Reading for son]. I’m hoping you will be able from this to get the condition straightened out satisfactorily. Apparently there’s a good deal of warning concerning what might come up if this wasn’t gotten in hand, and it should not be very hard right at this time to get hold of it, and I hope you will be able to handle it now.

I don’t know that it is any oftener that people say we have helped them than it has been in the past, but making a closer study of it than we have in the past, naturally we see it more. I appreciate what you and Mrs. [298] have to say about the work.

The building is coming along very nicely, and we should be getting it in shape now pretty soon. I have been hoping you would have the opportunity to get down and look it over. I certainly appreciate your contribution toward the work. I’m thinking you and Mrs. [298] will want to have something very definite of you own selection for the hospital; possibly the furnishing of a room, a ward, or something of the kind. Maybe you might feel this is trying to ride a free horse to death, but I feel that your interests are such that you would like to have it said, and like to be able to say when you see the work going along, that you have a definite part in it - or that someone is being taken care of in one of the rooms you helped to, or did furnish. Of course such furnishings as needed will be very little - or the bed and linens for a room, whatever you might choose. You know thousands of things. Anyway, you can think about that.

I’m thinking that possibly I’ll be in New York next week end, though don’t know if I’ll be there any longer than just Saturday or not - like to see you though whenever I’m there. Anyway, you can think about that.

R4. 2/3/31 [2056]‘s letter to EC:

My Dear Mr. Cayce;-

Could there be any connection between our constant thinking & talking of your & your sending the paper with your second lecture? Anyway whether there is a connection or not, we were extremely glad to hear from you, & I thoroughly enjoyed reading the lecture. Brought it down to business with me yesterday, so that [298] hasn’t had a chance as yet to read it.

I not only enjoyed it, but found a great deal of help in it as well. What a wealth of truth there is in that statement

• “It is not that we must seek with our physical minds, …, the entrance to the subconscious, but that we so think that we do not build a barrier of material desires against which the subconscious will have to fight.” Just exactly what I have been doing - Do you wonder therefore that I am grateful for your timely warning.

I have a week coming to me (winter vacation) & Mrs. [298] & I have been talking about going to Virginia Beach. Even have gone so far as to look up the roads, etc. Would certainly love to see you & have a good long talk.

A couple of my Masonic brothers & their families have recently moved to Virginia Beach. They have bought some tourist hotel & intend running it.

Phoned [257] today, thinking I could get him to go to lunch with me, but he is tied up with some people from out-of-town. I understand he has been sick with a bad cold, although he is better now.

Things, or rather conditions, here at the store have changed considerably for me. Have been transferred to Paymaster & general cashier. The work is more congenial even though it hasn’t meant any more in the way of recompense. At least I enjoy the work & am happy in it.

The political situation at … is simmering. This coming summer we elect our officers for the coming year under the new city manager charter. The election will be non-partisan & I imagine rather lively. I doubt whether I shall attempt to run again. In fact I have practically promised [298], I wouldn’t. I would like to have a good long talk with you & get your slant on the whole situation.

Give me a ring when you’re in N.Y. (if you have time). If possible we’ll get away somewhere by ourselves & have lunch & a nice talk feast.

Hon. [2056] …, N.Y.

My dear Mr. [2056]

I was indeed very glad to have yours of some days ago, and to know that the article in our local paper was interesting and helpful to you and Mrs. […] is certainly most gratifying to me; for that is truly the purpose of the whole thing - to be helpful, if possible, one to another.

I certainly do hope that you will find it convenient to spend a while at Virginia Beach during your winter vacation. The weather has been beautiful here for the last few weeks. I just hope you don’t hit one of our bad spells, as some of our other friends did last year - but this winter so far has been simply glorious! Anyway, we will be glad to have you. I believe you will really enjoy the place.

Well, conditions are rather precarious here - brought on by some misunderstandings and misinterpretations of ideas or ideals. I hope, though, that it will work out in the proper way and manner.

[257] was here sometime ago, and promised to be back next week. I’m sure if you could get in touch with him he would be more than glad to have you come down as he does.

R6. 5/26/31 [2056]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce;-

I’m almost too ashamed to write, after having neglected to answer your previous letters. My intentions were good; but that’s as far as I got. Guess they went as paving materials for the roads in hell. They say it is pave with good intentions.

It was too bad we couldn’t manage to have a few minutes together while you were in N.Y. There were so many things I wanted to talk over with you. First, your work & your plans, secondly I wanted to get your advice about [2060]‘s school plans. I phoned David’s office a couple of times but no one seemed to be in, except the common office help (not even Miss Sidelman).

I would certainly like to be with you for your meeting June 6th. It would be impossible to get away just now. Things are too unsettled at the office. There are two or three changes being made which make it practically impossible to get away. I suppose Dave has told you I changed my work last summer. Am in charge of the paymaster & cashiering depts. The work is interesting & the atmosphere most satisfactory. I’m putting in some new systems & they need constant watching.

I wish I had some construction suggestions to make in regards to “The Work.” I wonder if you remember what you once told me; that the “power,” “gift” or whatever one calls it, could only be used for the general good & not for any selfish end. If there be any such thing as Divine guidance working though the subconscious; if what we have witnessed is such a manifestation of Divine help, then it stands to reason it must be utilized ONLY for those things which are for the general good. I am sure that if the rest will always bear this in mind, (as you have), the work is bound to grow & succeed. History shows us that the growth & spread of Truth is slow (oh, how exceedingly slow) but nevertheless SURE. Even after 2000 years the teachings & the example of the one perfect man, are neglected, refused & unknown in many places in this world of ours. It is by trial & disappointments that we grow.

I have tried so hard to remember this, in my work here in … Many a time I have wanted to give it up, but the thought that I may perhaps be God’s humble instrument in bringing about decent, efficient government, has led me on. Life to me is not the accumulation of wealth but to so live that the world is the better for it.

My, this sounds like a school-boy sermon. Well it simply shows I need to practise putting my thoughts in writing. After a while they would flow more smoothly & might better express my real thought.

[2060] is getting along fine. Seems robust & strong - just a typical boy; careless, thoughtless, lazy but withal may good qualities & I believe a little better than the general run. He has two more years in high-school & then wants to go to Dartsmouth. I have thought that we ought to send him to some prep. school for these last two years (as a better preparation for college & for the discipline) but Mrs. [298] doesn’t think we can afford it. She is afraid there might not be enough to see him through college. So you see we all have our troubles, big to us, till we look around & see the other fellow’s.

Well I’ve rambled on at a great rate. Hope you’ll be able to wade thru this. With best wishes to all,

Hon. [2056] …, N.Y.

My dear Mr. [2056]

Your letter of the 26th is certainly appreciated. It does seem that whenever I am in New York I have so little time to get around to do the things I most want to do. I certainly would like to talk with you and Mrs. [298]. I have always thought a very great deal of you, ever since I first met you, and have wanted to be with you more and to know you better. I believe you bear acquaintance! But possibly the “powers that be” have seen fit to keep us from knowing each other as well as we might.

Yes, while I was there, for a couple of days [257] didn’t even let it be known that he was in town, Who when people called his office - his office didn’t even know he was in town. That was no doubt why you didn’t get in touch with us. You should have called his home.

I would certainly like to talk with you about the boy. You know, I have a couple of them myself, and for a number of years I was teacher of a boys’ class. Consequently, boys are very close to my heart. We don’t often stop to realize that the hope of our world rests on those boys, and I don’t believe any of us can go too far in trying to make and to give the very best opportunities to them. I certainly would like to talk with you about it.

Too bad that you won’t be able to get down next week-end. Possibly you will find the opportunity sometime during the summer. I believe you all would enjoy the beach. A few days ago I noticed that you had about ninety in New York and we were about seventy-eight here. Of course, I understand this was exceptional - but that’s the general rule. you will find this a very nice climate. We will no doubt have another meeting in July, for just forming the organization won’t amount to much unless we put some of those who are a part of it to work doing something. It isn’t this time, I don’t think, that we need such a great amount of money or financial backing. We need more the moral support, more people who are willing to speak a good word here and there, who will keep in touch with the ideals of the work itself and push them along to those desiring to know something of the things that may be obtained for their own individual selves if they will but seek in the right direction. This is needed more than anything else.
