This psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of January, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [2078], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by a friend in New York, Miss [954].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:50 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Indiana.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2078].
-
Now as we find, there is rather the complication of disturbances, which prevent the better normal physical functioning.
-
These as we find have been of rather long standing, and have gradually grown - from time to time - to be more disturbing, and are a part of those disturbances which sometime ago caused a general nervous breakdown.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [2078]:
-
In some times back, there were some teeth that caused a disturbance. Also there was a condition in the soft tissue of throat and nasal passages, of a catarrhal nature.
-
These gradually caused the absorption, or the draining into the system, of poisons.
-
Owing to a subluxation which exists in the upper dorsal areas (3rd and 4th), the slowing of the circulation or impulses through the liver, prevented the blood supply from taking care of these general excesses of poisons. And the nerve reflexes reacting to same DID cause, and bring about, a general nervous collapse.
-
In the present these same conditions have affected the area about the liver and gall duct, and gall bladder, in such manners as to hinder their proper reaction.
-
These find reflex reaction through the nerve pressures from the areas in the cerebrospinal system as indicated, as combined with the nerve flexure to head, nasal passage, and those areas in the whole of the vegetative nerve force, - as to produce a continued reaction from digestive forces, or a headache - that is called the migraine nature.
-
The addition of sedatives, or palliatives, will only - then - create more drosses, so as to continue to produce - as does the disturbance in the gall duct - the improper eliminations.
-
Hence toxic forces throughout the alimentary canal are gradually bringing more and more, to those pressures created in the sympathetic nervous system, the reflex in the muscular forces - first in one extremity and then the other, or limb, or shoulder, or at times the head or face or back, or hand, or various portions of the body, - in the form of neuritic reactions.
-
These, then, as we find, are the conditions to be reckoned with.
-
In the functioning of the system, the organs themselves have become sympathetically involved; and yet, owing to the general system attempting to keep active under the disturbed conditions, the body continues to keep going.
-
Hence we have a liver disturbance, bad assimilation or digestion at times; at times bad breath, at times conditions through the whole of the alimentary canal of poor eliminations; excesses at times of activities of the kidney and bladder, and at other times pains and distraughtness and weakness.
-
And whenever there is the attempt to use an active force, as of reading, or the use of the eyes, or any activity that would centralize the activities, unless it is able to gather its strength by the associations with numbers, it fatigues easily. Then after such an association or activity in group, or crowd, the body becomes especially fatigued.
-
As we find, then, in making the corrective forces for this body, ALL of these conditions as indicated must be taken into consideration; and the applications made in a consistent and persistent manner to work not only towards the correcting and eliminating of the disturbances, but toward the eradicating of the causes also.
-
As we find, while it may require a comparatively long period of consistent and practical and personal applications, these conditions may be eliminated, - if there is the consistent and persistent use of the applications as may be suggested here.
-
Do not break over from the activities once begun, or in the administrations as to diets, nor in the consistency of taking all of the things suggested; else we may find relapses that would produce other disturbances, by the very compound or complex conditions which exist.
-
First, then, begin with these as the first portion of the suggested treatments:
-
Each day, after the heavier meal, whether it is noon or evening, take a small dose - half a teaspoonful - of ALCAROID. First dissolve this amount in a small quantity of water, then fill the glass with water and drink, - then drink another glass of water afterwards.
-
At least twice each week - say Tuesdays and Thursdays - apply the hot Castor Oil Packs over the liver and the gall duct and caecum area. Use at least three thicknesses of flannel, of sufficient size to cover the area over the liver, and extending down to the lower portion of the groin on the right side and over to the middle portion of the abdomen. Wring out the flannel in the hot Castor Oil and apply direct to the body, covering it with cloth to prevent the messiness (for it’s messy enough in itself!), and then cover with oil cloth, putting an electric pad over same. Allow this to remain on the body for at least an hour.
-
Then each week following the Packs - say, on Friday - take the CAROID and BILE SALTS Tablets; one tablet after the morning meal, one tablet after the noon meal, TWO tablets after the evening meal.
-
The next day - even with the flushing that this may give - after the bowels have flushed - take a colonic irrigation. This is to cleanse the colon of the poisons that will have been as accumulations in the system from the use of such applications.
-
After the third week of using these applications - in the manner indicated - rest for about three days; that is, leave off the application, see?
-
Then begin with the use of the Radio-Active Appliance, to give quietude and stamina to the general nervous system. Use it about an hour each day, as the body rests, and circulate the attachments about the body in the manner as ordinarily indicated for same. Use regularly for a period of a week to ten days, then leave off a few days, - then begin again - and so on. This will bring great quietude and rest to the body, equalizing the whole nervous system.
-
At the same time the Radio-Active Appliance is begun, begin with the osteopathic adjustments to correct the subluxations which exist specifically in the 3rd and 4th dorsal, as well as loosening or stimulating the ganglia from that area to the base of the head, as well as in the coccyx area and in the lumbar and the 9th dorsal. These would be given twice each week, until at least ten such treatments have been given.
-
Now, as to the diet:
-
Through the period that the first applications are being made, use a great deal of liquid and semi-liquid foods. Plenty of fruit juices. Plenty of vegetable juices, - both raw and cooked.
-
Have a great deal of soups, - as from wild game, or vegetables, or even beef broth, mutton broth and the like.
-
No hog meat at any time.
-
Cereals - as the cracked whole wheat (cooked a long time), the combinations of wheat and barley (as in Maltex), and the rolled oats and steel cut oats - all of these should be a principal portion of the diet.
-
Sweets should be mostly honey, and not cane sugar.
-
Do these, - and then when there is the beginning of the Radio-Active Appliance, and the osteopathic applications, the diet may be changed to more of the vegetables themselves, and fish, fowl and lamb. These then may become the greater part of the diet.
-
But keep the flushing of the system for the better eliminations; and we will bring for this body near to normal conditions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is the gall bladder or liver condition serious? (A) It may become so, as we have indicated, unless measures are taken for the correction of same.
-
(Q) Do the occasional traces of blood when I vomit (during migraine attacks) mean anything? (A) Just that as we have indicated, - the disturbance of the liver and the gall duct area. It’s the straining, of course, and is more from the throat, and not a hemorrhage from the stomach at all.
-
(Q) Should I take more exercise, such as long walks, or should I rest more? (A) The exercise should not be so much, - that is, not such LONG walks, especially through the early portion of the applications indicated; but the body should be in the open as much as possible, and gradually - as more strength is gained - the exercise may be greater. Walking is the better exercise; and when taking walks, before walking eat half a lemon; and then after walking, eat the other half - with salt. The first would be without salt. Then drink plenty of water.
-
(Q) What is the nature of the small lump which appeared recently in my left breast? (A) This as we find is only a matter of a glandular clogging. With the general drainage of the system set up, and the stimulations through those activities indicated, this should of itself disappear. If it does not, then the glandular force will need some stimulation by massaging the area with a small quantity of Cocoa-Butter; not over the breast, but over the area of the mammary glands, under the arm.
-
(Q) Is my increasing need of glasses due to ill-nourished nerves? (A) More from the GENERAL disturbance and weakness of the system. All of these weaknesses, to be sure, will necessarily be aided if those applications suggested are consistently and systematically followed.
Then, the glasses may be fitted for the eyes, to prevent the strains that may come from close work of writing, sewing or the like. Do not have them changed so much, or fitted, until after the periods at least of beginning the second or third week of the osteopathic adjustments.
Do these things, and we will find these will be the necessary forces, and will gradually reduce the headaches - eliminating them entirely.
- We are through for the present.

Dear Mr. Cayce -
Your reading reached me last week - and already, just from the dieting - I’ve satisfactory results. I am beginning the Castor Oil Packs this week. I am writing to ask you where Alcaroid and Caroid and Bile Salts may be had, and cost of same. I should like to have this information as soon as convenient, please.
The friend in New York who recommended your Readings to me is Miss [954]. Thank you for your help, to the present - and I am anticipating successful results.
Yours sincerely, (Mrs.) [2078]
P.S. Have you an osteopath in … on your list already? We have a few who are considered good but I thought there was a possibility that you have one listed. If not, I shall send you the name of whomever I decide upon. Miss Moore is lending me her Radio-Active device. Thank you.
[2078]
R2. 1/26/40 EC’s letter to [2078]:
Dear Mrs. [2078]
Have yours of the 22nd - glad you are feeling better. Al-Caroid is made by the American Ferment Co. Buffalo, N.Y. and the Caroid and Bile Salts - usually comes with the package of Al-caroid - you should be able to get it at any drug store.
Mighty glad to know you are acquainted with Miss [954] she is such a dear sweet person we all think a great deal of her here. Please remember us to her when you write won’t you.
No - we have no special Osteopath on our list in … and will be glad to have the address and name of the one you select. Insist that they give the treatments as suggested. Can give him plenty of references if he wishes them - and be glad for them to write any of those we give.
Thanking you and hoping you keep on the improve
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R3. 2/14/40 [2078]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce -
Now that my third week is pretty well advanced, I’m writing you something of my condition, to ask you for some information and to give you some.
My general condition is much better, although each week I have been spending the greater part of one day in bed with nausea and light migraine attack. Last week I increased the number of castor oil packs from two to three and this week I am doing the same. The day after I use the packs, I feel pretty punk and my mouth tastes like I had eaten up all of the bill-goat’s tin cans. However, today the taste has been more ‘brassy’ than ‘tinny’! So I judge from that, that the packs have done quite a bit of stirring up the poisons. High colonics (at home) have given me a great deal of comfort.
Next week I begin taking treatments - not with an osteopath but with a woman chiropractor, who uses manipulations along with her spinal work and I have her assurance that she will follow instructions in your Reading. Twelve years ago while she was giving me a treatment for head-ache one day, she told me that if I did not do something about my liver that I would have some pretty serious trouble with it some time. Recently I recalled the incident and because of it and also because of her open-mindedness and willingness to take suggestion - and also, she is a personal friend - I decided upon her. Her name is Dr. Florence Wynkoop.
Now I want to ask about the Alcaroid and the Caroid and Bile Salts. I cannot tell from my reading whether I am to continue taking them after I start with Dr. Wynkoop. Will you kindly let me know? Miss [954] has sent me the Radio Active Appliance, which I shall use. She is very enthusiastic about your work. I find her a wonderful person.
And now the last point: Will it be all the same to you if I wait until next month and send you
5 on my Membership fee as for me to send the2 I promised during this month. It will save a few cents on post office orders to send the amount named next month. However, I shall suit you. May I hear from you soon?Very sincerely, [2078]
R4. 2/16/40 EC’s letter to [2078]:
Dear Mrs. [2078]
Have yours of the 15th - glad to hear you are feeling even the least better, for as you know your condition is deep seated and you will have to keep after it even when you are feeling a whole lot better. After your Oil Packs do you take the Olive oil - take at least two table spoons full of olive oil after the packs. And the colonics will remove a great deal of the poisons - and relieve that bad taste.
Am sure if Dr. Wynkoop will follow the suggestions she can and will get real results - am sure you will have to keep up the packs often until you get the liver condition straightened out - and it will do it. Would leave off the Bile Salts tablets - but would take the Al-Caroid after meals for a week or so any way - but keep up the Oil pack every few days any way and be sure and take the Olive oil after the packs - and colonics next day.
Yes - very well Mrs. [2078] about the pay - wish never had to ask any one for such - but have to live as the rest of us do.
Thank you and believe you will find the Appliance good to be used when you have those headaches - will put you to sleep
Sincerely hoping to be of a service
Sincerely, [signed] Edgar Cayce
R5. 3/19/40 (Tuesday) [2078]‘s letter to EC:
Dear, dear Mr. Cayce -
And may I add to that salutation, Mrs. Cayce and your stenographer. I am DEEPLY indebted to all of you. I am sorry that I have not written you again sooner, but I was waiting until such time - and that time is now - when I could send another payment on my financial obligation to you. However, yesterday I had a letter from Miss [954], saying that she recently had heard from you and suggesting that I write you at once. I had not done so, not only because I wanted to send another portion of the fee but also I did not want to seem to annoy you. May I thank you right here for your generosity which made it possible for me to afford a Reading. To be sure you must live and must have a means of so doing. It does seem unfortunate that so many of us - I fancy there are too many like myself - who have spent so much money seeking health at the hands of physicians who fail to diagnose correctly, that they have limited means when they turn to you.
I am GREATLY improved. Have had not more than two - one of them quite severe - headaches and vomiting attacks since I started the combination of Castor Oil packs and chiropractic treatments. The severe attack followed a SEVERE treatment from Dr. Wynkoop, and I surely got rid of enough poisons for a dozen or more persons, it seemed to me. I both vomited and expelled from the bowels pints of green liquid or fluid. The green bowel passages continue, particularly after the packs and high colonics, but the color is not so vicious looking. Dr. Wynkoop told me last week that my liver was beginning to soften up, that when I first started with her that it was very hard. The entire region of the liver, gall bladder and duct is very tender still, sometimes hurts and sometimes something seems to squirm around in my side; but I am slowly growing less conscious of that right side. And would you believe me, not only has my complexion cleared up by my body has become shades lighter. Most of my body has been brown ALWAYS, ever since I can remember; so much so, that I used to be ashamed as a young girl to wear short sleeves. Of course my sensitiveness to that was lost somewhere along the way years and years ago; but I have been amazed and naturally, pleased, to note the change. Although as you know, it is the functional health that I most desire. I am continuing to be careful of my diet and take two Castor Oil packs each week and of course, the chiropractic twice a week. I’ve had a few delightful periods of relief when I felt as though I had had a rebirth, but I find that I tire quite easily. Writing a letter, for instance, uses much of my strength. Of course I may overdo when I feel improved; there are so MANY things I want to be about, but I suppose I shall have to continue to discipline myself in the virtue of patience for a time. The last of the ten treatments in chiropractic, as prescribed in the Reading, will be given on Friday of this week. Since my daughter, who has been ill for some time is now taking treatments also, from Dr. Wynkoop, I had thought that I might drop them for a little while and pick them up later. I thought I might repeat the course of treatment first prescribed - three weeks of Castor Oil Packs, Alcaroid and Caroid and Bile Salts - and then take up the Chiropractic and Radio Active machine. What do you think of the plan?
[The following was copied into 2159-1 Background] While I should like very much to have a second Reading for myself, I do feel that my daughter requires one more than I at this time. She has been so long in her recovery and there seems to be a snag somewhere that we haven’t been able so far to pull out. If you can give her a date at this time, kindly let me know, I know from your MOST INTERESTING bulletins that you will be in New York for a few weeks some time soon, and of course your time will be quite full for quite a period, I suspect; but perhaps you can give me some idea. It would be such a privilege to be in one of your audiences in New York. I know Mrs. [954] will be delighted, not to mention the many others whom I don’t know. She is a rare person and I’ve grown to lover her deeply. Isn’t it too bad that so frequently congenial people are so separated by distance?
The informative bulletins open up new avenues of thought, new worlds to me, as I lie resting these days.
May your good work grow in interest, and prosper as it so deserves. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely, [2078], …, Ind.
P.S. I am, as you of course see, just enclosing five dollars in currency.
R6. 3/22/40 EC’s letter to [2078]:
Dear Mrs. [2078]
Thanks for yours of the 19th - am happy for you to know you are on the improve, be very careful to keep close to the suggestions, for the condition was of such long standing would be easy for a reverting to old troubles - will have to be mindful of your diet, as well as to keep the Oil packs, now after the packs for several days suppose you try taking two table spoons full of olive oil instead of the Caroid Tablets - believe the oil will be better for your system - be like food for the alimentary canal, and not so much strain on you. Wouldn’t stop the treatments from Dr. all of a sudden - maybe just skip one or two a week. Believe you will find that better.
Am so glad for you that you have gotten at the seat of the trouble. Dr. Wynkoop has evidently done a nice job for you, please thank them for me.
Keep up the Radio-Active each day for rest and help with circulation even when you don’t take the adjustments.
Now for your [2159] - will be glad to try and help - am making the period for the afternoon of the 2nd - 2.30 to 3.30 your time. Be sure and give full name and where she will be at that hour if satisfactory to each of you as Dr. Wynkoop has given her treatments will be well have her ask some specific questions also. And any special that you would like to ask - be sure and let me know if that time suits you.
Thanking you and hoping to be of a service further
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R7. 3/27/40 [2078]‘s letter to EC:
[Page 1 used in 2159-1 Background.] I feel that you will want further developments in my own case for your files; they are I consider VERY important. The day after I wrote you last week, for several days in fact, I passed through a crisis, I believe, in my case.
The same day I wrote you, I was experiencing a pulling sensation in my side. It grew more intense as the day wore on until it took on the semblance of a boil drawing to a head. Late in the evening it became easy, the same feeling that one has after a boil breaks, though I did not think of it in that way until the next day. The night following this experience, I lay awake the entire night, chilling constantly. When morning came, my feet and hands were puffed, joints in my hands were sore. I had the first running cold in my head that I had had in five years; my throat was sore, and my perspiration and urine were MOST offensive. My first bowel movement of the morning appeared normal except for the ugly green color. In the next three or four hours though I had a half dozen bowel movements of the same color but slimy in appearance. During all this time, I suffered similar though less severe pains that I have had in ptomaine poisoning attacks. By night fall, I felt considerably better, except for weakness. By the next morning the swelling and most of the soreness had gone, though my running cold continued and is still hanging on. My stools for the past day or two, while not normal, are much better. So I feel that in a very short space of time there, I threw off and out an enormous amount of poison. Naturally, I am GREATLY encouraged about myself. And for all of this, I am deeply indebted to your generous help.
I shall be eager to see the reading for my daughter and during that period, I shall be as helpful as possible.
Yours very sincerely, [2078]
R8. 5/28/40 Letter reporting on daughter’s condition: “While I am more or less at a standstill in my recovery - my side bothers me quite a bit at times and the lump in my breast is still there - I’m sure you will be pleased to know that my daughter and myself have been able to take care of my husband through his bronchial pneumonia and bad heart condition. For two weeks he was very ill but is improving nicely though slowly now.”
R9. 7/14/40 Letter reporting also on daughter’s condition: “My own health continues to improve gradually. From the time I began working under your Reading instructions until now, there is just no comparison. However, there is an element that would be exceedingly disturbing if I would let it and that is that the lump in my left breast has become much larger, at times slightly painful, and the neuritic pains in my left arm and hand are quite pronounced. Will you kindly advise me further as to treatment for the breast. I have been massaging under arm with cocoa butter, according to your instructions.
“Our chiropractor thinks we both have done remarkably well in coming through the heavy mental and physical strain of my husband’s long illness - bronchial pneumonia with heart complication. It is going on four months since he became ill. He soon will return to work, his doctor thinks, but for two months or more he was a constant care to us. We two nursed him here at home. So, Mr. Cayce, for us to improve at all under such circumstances will be gratifying to you as it has been to us, since you have contributed so much toward it.”
R10. 7/21/40 (Sunday) [2078]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce -
Received recently your letter setting aside a time for Readings for myself and daughter. Sorry, very sorry, I CANNOT take advantage of this opportunity. You evidently misread my letter or perhaps it was irregular in its requests
- and if so, I am sorry. I was merely seeking information which I thought perhaps you could give, basing it on experiences with other cases similar to mine. I CANNOT afford Readings now, even with your very generous plan of permitting persons to pay for them as they can. Because of the long and recent illness of my husband with attendant expense and other unforseen outlays of money in large amounts (for us), I feel it would be very unwise to assume additional obligation. I am sorry. I am continuing my chiropractic treatments - which I get for a dollar each - once a week and […] is taking two a week. I’m sure you will understand the situation. So I am writing you now to surrender the time you set apart for us to some one else. Thank you very kindly for all you have done. Shortly I shall send another installment on my fee.
Sincerely, [2078]
R11. 7/25/40 EC’s letter to [2078]: ”…For your Self Mrs. [2078], try making an ointment like this - mutton tallow - spirits of turpentine - spirits of camphor. Equal parts - that is dissolve the tallow say a table or two table spoons full of the liquid - then the same of the other two. Each night and morning gently - very gently massage the lump - believe this will take this away. Let me know results after using same for several weeks.
Just hope this will help
With all good wishes
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R12. 8/5/40 [2078]‘s letter to EC:
…, Ind.
Dear Mr. Cayce, Your very helpful letter arrived about ten days ago, most welcome in the suggestions included for treatment of my breast. I am following them very faithfully and feel that the treatments are beginning to take hold, although it probably will require some length of time before pronounced change in noticed.
As always, you were most kind and generous. I appreciate fully your position in preferring NOT to use the conscious mind in prescribing - the very nature of your work is away from that. But I felt that the worry of involving myself more deeply in financial obligation might work more harm than good. Please NEVER again speak regretfully of the necessity of a fee; you and yours must have the wherewithal to live just as the rest of us do. Even if some rich person would see fit to endow your work so that you would not be dependent on material return from your work, it probably would be unwise for it to be done in that way. As a race, we poor mortals - the great majority of us at any rate - haven’t developed sufficiently in a spiritual way to value to the full (or even partly so) those things that we do not have to pay for in the ‘coin of the realm.’ Incidentally, I am enclosing another payment on my obligation to you.
The last of this week, we shall be leaving for two weeks’ stay at an inexpensive country place, for my husband’s health. Upon our return I shall write you of my condition.
Sincerely, [2078]
R13. 10/23/40 EC’s letter to [2159]:
Dear Miss [2159]:
Letter from Miss [954] of New York spoke of your Mother being ill, am writing to inquire of her and how she is getting along hope you are fine, and will appreciate it if you find time to let me hear from you all. Trust you may have the opportunity some time in the near future to visit at Va. Beach, think you would like it here.
Thanking you and with all good wishes asking that you remember me very kindly to your Mother
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R14. 10/26/40 [2078]‘s letter to EC:
My dear Mr. Cayce -
[2159] received your note of inquiry about both of us, myself in particular, this morning and I am answering from my bed of recuperation. I should have written you, but the plan for operation was made and consummated so quickly that I managed to get only two communications written - one to Miss [954]. I should have asked her to send it on to you. I also wrote her from hospital where I came through so nicely. The lump, or cake, in my breast was diagnosed as cyst, AFTER the operation. Since it is over and I am home, a slight question has arisen over the exact nature of it. Within myself I feel confident that if I had followed your instructions (from Reading) from the BEGINNING as carefully as I followed those on the treatment of my gall bladder and liver, I should have had the same gratifying result. I SHOULD LIKE YOU TO GIVE ME ANOTHER READING JUST AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, ON BREAST SITUATION.
