This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 2nd day of December, 1942, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [2174], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. GC: You will have before you the entity, [2174], born [2174], August 28, 1890, in Canton, New York, who now seeks a Check Life Reading with information, advice and guidance specifically regarding a situation which has arisen in … School, …, New Hampshire, centering around […], a member of the faculty. You will correlate the past associations of the entity with […], and advise what they are working out now. You will answer the questions that may be asked:

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, [2174].

3. In considering the conditions that exist, while we do not find an association of this entity with that now called […], there HAS been an association with the husband and with the son. And this in itself causes some of the inabilities of interpreting, in the experience of each, some of those problems which have arisen and which do arise.

4. Then, while there are opportunities and possibilities, we find that the greater activity must be upon the part of the husband. For, there has been a problem - and an association - that is being met in the present.

5. Some parts of the attitudes that have been taken by […] are self-deception, or imposed. This in itself creates a situation that may only be wholly imposed or corrected by the husband, and his purpose and desire for the betterment of the general conditions, and for the better welfare of the school and all its principles and purposes for which it stands.

6. Under the circumstances, owing to the very character of the disturbance, measures might be taken - as in taking advantage of the situation from a purely material relationship. Yet it will require some patience on the part of the entity [2174], and the insisting that there be measures taken BY the husband for the welfare of the school, of the son, and for the PRINCIPLES for which the school stands.

8. (Q) As […]‘s personal problems have become an integral part of this community, both socially and academically, it is obvious I must move. What can be done to better her relations with the faculty? (A) As we have indicated, and as we find, the better stand - or the only one to take a stand is the husband. AND this may only be done as for betterment of every phase of welfare of the school, of self, and of the community; owing to the part the activities have played.

This, then, becomes more the part that [2174] is to take; not that of indifference nor yet being too sympathetic in feeling towards any member of this family, BUT that a stand must be taken, and that which is in keeping with the principles and the welfare of the school, of the community, and of each member of the faculty AND family.

9. (Q) There have been fears of an unbalance. Is there danger? (A) If there is still that insistency of self-deception, - yes.

10. (Q) Can I help the situation with her husband and son? (A) As we have indicated. Read thoroughly, analyze that given.

R1. 12/5/42 Letter: “What a relief for me your reading was!! It came this morning. There is enough to do but it can be done as ‘principal of the school’ and not get emotionally snarled up. Thank you.”

R2. 5/1/43 Letter to EC from [2174]: “One thing you have done for me by setting the Congress dates is do away with any indecision - I simply cannot come as our graduation date is the 19th and I give my first four graduates their diplomas on that day. I am afraid that I wanted an excuse to come down as I have so much to ask & to tell and I am not good in the mails. In fact I am badly out of touch with you and that is not good.

“I am amazed at the book and so pleased. It is an entirely different thing now - alive and simple and good. It hardly seems that the same person wrote it. I am glad now that I spoke as frankly as I did. Don’t you like it? Does Gertrude? What a blow Hugh Lynn’s departure must be in so many ways. Where is he?

“My […] has gone too. He is an incipient air cadet at Keesler Field near Beloxi, Miss. He is only 18 - that is pretty young to go - but I had the most beautiful letter from him in the first flush of his homesickness. Reward for all things bless his heart.

“How are things going with you? Pretty jammed and worrying I am sure. And yet you have found people to help haven’t you. Not me alas I have been no use. But my job is definitely here and it goes well - very well - but not easily. It absorbs every bit of me but I know it is right.

“Some day - alas when - I would love to spill the whole story to you - it would interest you - but it will take time.

“Write me if and when you have time. I had a letter from Marion Wolfe - I would love to see her too.

“I hate to lose touch with you all - one couldn’t of course …[?] a mentally but I am so far away and some how far behind and so very tied down.

“My love to you all (including [1208]). I wonder if I will ever have him. We have had to give up our lower grades for next year because of the demand for space (beds) in the upper grades. That is only temporary I know. I wonder if that would have happened if he had come.”

R3. 5/5/43 Letter from [2174]: “Think if you knew just how glad was to hear from you if possible you would scratch a line oftener. Mighty good to hear from you, and can’t tell you how badly am disappointed that you can’t be here for the Congress. Possibly shouldn’t have tried to have it at all this year with H. L. away - hadn’t realized just how much had come to depend on him until he was not here to call on, but have to have the meeting of the Trustees, even if it is only a proxy meeting, and many had indicated they wished to come, so have announced it - have no idea what will happen. Thank you for your comment on the book - it has amazed the publishers at its sale - is already in its fourth printing and as Mr. Sloane says he feels it is one that will sell for several years. Do get some nice letters about it - wish could show you some of them - at least these people feel like that for few moments and is up to me to encourage that thought for good if possible.

“Yes - think you saved the day on the book with your suggestions and that Tom did a very nice job in the end, he is coming along nicely now physically, is in Fla. again.

“Well know just how you feel with your boys in the Army now

• E. E. is overseas, all is well thus far. H. L. is in Special Service Unit, at present at Camp Meade.

“Am sure […] will make a fine man, can only hope and pray all will be well - what do you hear from […]?

“O we are just too busy - are three months in advance with appointments so have had to stop making appointments but still they come from all over a funny thing to me - do you recall the reading last year - about Boston as many again from there as any other area.

“Am sure you have a fine place there wish could come there. Hope to do just that some sweet day in the not too distant future. Am anxious to hear how everything goes and will be glad to see and hear from you at any time.

“Hope to have Mrs. Wolfe with us for the Congress - but many of others we won’t have am sure - sure will miss you - but your place is there to be sure. How are all our friends among your group?

“Hope yet it will be possible for you to have [1208] for some part of his training at least. Miss Gladys was sick when I came back from N.Y. in Jan - with Mumps, been in bed last two days with measles breaks into things and disappointments some that I hate - for can’t remedy it, puts them too far off - 1st of Aug.

“Thanks a lot for letting us hear from you, remember us to all there please and with love from all.”

R4. 9/29/43 See Mrs. [3250]‘s Life Reading, 3250-1, Par. 49-A—53-A referring her to Mrs. “[2174] for ‘work in schools with her Atlantean friend in Egypt’ and for sculpture training ‘with Whitney and in [2174]‘s school.’”

R5. 10/10/43 Mrs. [2174]‘s letter: “What an interesting thing. It gives me the shivers up and down my spine when that kind of thing happens. This is the second time. It will be most interesting to see if she [Mrs. [3250]] writes me. Who guessed me anyway to ask the question? Does ‘Whitney’ mean Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney?”

R6. 12/8/43 Letter from [2174] to EC: “I have been pathetically slow with this check - but here it is and good luck to it and to you.

“What a busy life you must be living and what a task you have. I do hope you have a rampant of defenders. I wish I could drop in for a time and catch up with events your way.

“The news here is good - busy but good. We are in full flight of Christmas and carol singing and hanging greenery. A good time.

“My thoughts and wishes go to you all this Christmas time. I shall spend it in Chicago with my husband and [2464] - it will be strange not to hang our stockings here.”

R7. 12/16/43 Letter from EC to Mrs. [2174]: “I have yours of the eighth, and it was mighty good to hear from you again. I appreciate more than I know how to tell you, your contribution to the Living Sponsorship. There has been very good response but a very few of the old members have responded, as we thought they might. Among the new ones, I suppose their enthusiasm accounts for it, but most of them have been from people who have just had their rdgs., and evidently want to help in any way they can. This of course, is gratifying to us.

“We certainly have been snowed under here with letters, requests, wires, phone calls, everything! But we have gotten along fine and, but I don’t know whether its getting the best of me, or Gertrude and Miss Gladys. We are having to have now about 10 in the office, so you know there is a lot of work to be done.

“We are doing much more, of course, than we ever thought possible. Might be of interest to you to know how this came about. I hope sometime in the not too distant future to see you and talk with you about this. Its not something you can write.

“Yes, it will be quite different for you to be away from […] for Christmas. How is the baby getting along? Fine, I’m sure. You should see our babies. Although, one is only about a year old, he is old enough it seems to get excited about Santa Claus.

“It will be nice for you and […] to be with Capt. […]. I had often wondered if he was at Great Lakes. I know 2 or 3 boys that had been there in the last few months, and they have spoken of him so often.

“Thank you again, for everything, and glad to know everything is going so well. Remember me to all who would care to hear, and with every good wish for the holiday season, and love to all.”

R8. 2/1/44 Letter from [2174] to EC: “My dear, I would like to talk things out with you. Somehow now that your ability to personally meet all the demands upon you has become so pointed up in its impossibility there should some other picture develop. Giving of one’s self ever is all right

• that must be of course but I feel that a new angle is developing and must develop - you see you must not work until you give out - that is not right and defeats everything. I don’t know any answers - I am too far away & know too little of the situation. One thought would be that the intelligent correlating of material from the rdgs. would furnish living material for people to work out their own problems - that is what they must do in the end. It is not as easy nor doesn’t give many facets that the readings give - but - but, you are doing it of course to some extent - the bulletins are interesting - good stuff. But some material like this psychic-spiritual reading that would meet an angle of a specific problem.

“Of course I have always felt that that was the angle of attack and that the physical would follow. Some excerpts from the rdgs. said that.

“All this is not to much avail - just thoughts. Anyway don’t go out & under - you must not. If you can once mentally see your direction clear even before you have been able to work toward it things will straighten out.

“I will try to see you sometime - I can’t tell when I can get away - my life is a series of ‘musts’ that take shape & unfold as I go along. You know - but I will come sometime.”

R9. 3/10/44 Letter from EC to Mrs. [2174]: “I wish it were possible for me to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with you. I trust you are going to be with us in the Congress this year the week of the 18th to 25th of June. Let me know if that time is going to be alright, if not, I will change the whole works. I hope it will be possible for you to be here because we need you more than at any time since we have been carrying on.

“I hope I don’t ever try to overdo myself. I only want to do all that I possibly can, and yet I know that I can do nothing at all of myself. If I do drive the physical too hard of course something will happen.

“Recently I took a little rest as you know, but came back all ‘tuckered’ out rather than relaxed as much as I should have been. Everything was all awry according to my own personality. I proceeded to get in a dither and a stew and of course you know what that did to me. The last two weeks I have been in bed with the flu; with the pneumonia; with the grippe; with everything thats bad. Feeling some little better and hope possibly to be back at work next week. I am trying in the meantime to get all of my personal letters written.

“If you find the time drop us a line and let me know about the time of the Congress.

“Our appointments have gotten so far behind we are just pitiful.”

R10. 3/18/44 Letter from [2174]: “Oh dear - not too good news from you. It’s not that I doubt you in any way ever except that all human beings are fallible.

“It merely is that when a situation is impossible - physical rdgs. six month’s ahead defeat their own purpose - one should start again at scratch in one’s view of essentials and find the way out. There always is one. I certainly don’t know what it is.

“I can come to the Conference - not all of it as school closes the 16th & I cannot leave immediately. But I will get there especially if you think I can be of use.”

R11. 3/25/44 Letter from EC: “Thanks a lot for your letter of the 18th.

“No, I haven’t been so good, but I hope I am on the improve. I don’t lay it to over work. I lay it to being unable to control my temper. I know that’s what was the matter with me. Mother hasn’t been very well, but stayed up most of the time, but she is feeling better and is carrying on. We are back at work, but being out two or three weeks, has complicated things a great deal, for many of the people are not prone to want to wait and we can appreciate it.

“I do hope that you will be at the Congress at least for the last two or three days, if it isn’t possible for you to be here the whole week. I know that you are very, very busy, but we do need your council and advice.

“Have you heard from Dr. [2246]? Of course you knew about his illness and of […]‘s writing for a rdg. and the doctor agreed to follow the suggestions and Dr. […] is just about back on his feet. My! I was uneasy about him, because the conditions weren’t very good when we first had it. He seems to think there is a chance for a deep test. [See [1561] series.] I hope it works out. Have you heard anything about it?

“Please let me hear from you, and with love from each one of us to each of you…”

R12. 4/11/44 Letter from [2174]: “Yes there is a very good chance for a deep test. In fact [2091] is going down Friday to finish the deal. Everyone says it is good. It seems that a group of people owning land (us & around) are going together

• checkerboarding our holdings & drilling. Hunt is wich [?] & a lif [?] oil company so that we will have enough cash to make the test final. Mr. Myers [J. T. Myers] is going to drill. It looks very, very good. My will I be glad to have that off my shoulders and behind us. We don’t know on whose land the well will be drilled that is up to their geologists and it does not really matter as they are out to develop if they find oil. I did not know of [2246]‘s illness - it would have been TRAGIC to have him go hope the oil came in.

“As my deals are working out for this summer I may have to be back on the 23rd June which means that I could arrive the 18th & stay a day or two. Anyway I will come.

“The picture of you going around losing your temper somehow does not fit and I maintain that it in itself is a manifestation of something deeper not a cause. February & March have been hectic months emotional for everyone - only I go into a defensive instead of losing my temper. April will be better. You tell the people that don’t want to wait that beggars cannot be choosers - or get someone else to tell them.

“Anyway my love to you all - and I’ll be down I only wish it were at a time when one could pow-wow - but I suppose those days are gone for you.”

R13. 4/14/44 Letter from EC: “Thanks very much for yours of the 11th.

“I am glad to hear that there is going to be a good chance for a deep test in the vicinity of the holdings of the company. I suppose the well will go down pretty close to where our friend Mr. Marcus [Geo. L. Marquess] pointed out when he had me come to Texas to look at the location, as I think I told you about. Certainly messed me up at that time, but that’s something else. I hope the operations go on and you get a real test, for I believe they will find oil there, yet, I am of the opinion that they won’t be very close to it, unless they go awfully, awfully deep. I am sure you are glad to have it off your shoulders and that the thing will work out alright. I hope Mr. [2091] will have no trouble in getting the things arranged.

“Yes, Dr. [2246] was pretty ill. I really was surprised at his responding so well as he seems to think he has, to the suggestions that were made. It isn’t very often that we are able to get two or three schools of medicine to work together.”

“It will certainly be nice to see you again. I do hope you will be able to spend a few days with us.

“I am hoping to get the Life Reading for your new grand-son [5008] today. I trust it will be interesting and worthwhile.

“No, I think I was about right about the picture of the source or cause of the greater part of my recent illness. I understand that many of us do jump at conclusions, but I have tried to study it over pretty thoroughly and I think that’s right.

“What do you hear from your boys? You are so accustomed to having your family in all the dangerous places in the country, you just put them in the hands of the Lord and go on and tend to your own business. We are of course, not always able to forget and to wholly trust in the Divine.

“I will be mighty happy to show you our grand-sons. I am sure you will have to say they are about as fine a couple of boys as you ever saw.

“Looking forward to seeing you, and with love from each and everyone here, I remain”

R15. 9/23/47 Mrs. [1770]‘s letter: “Called on Mrs. [2174] at … School - it’s a delightful place. We had a half hour’s chat and she sends her love to you [GD] and Hugh Lynn.”

R16. 2/6/70 GD’s note: Mrs. […] told me she had just returned from placing her daughter in Mrs. [2174]‘s school; and Mrs. [2174] requested that we send copies of all her readings, since a terrific fire a few weeks ago had destroyed the original building, books, records, papers, etc.

R17. 4/28/70 She wrote: “I have 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and 84 children in the school… From all I see and read you are spreading much needed spiritual values far and wide. It is good.”
